    A friend of mine, as an attack on my belief, said something to the tune of, "God sacrifices himself to himself to save mankind from himself." My reply was, "To paraphrase Jean-Luc Picard, 'What you say with irony, I say with conviction.'"
    I watched a video a few days ago by David Wood, where he addressed this issue from a different direction. He noted how in ancient days, the pagans believed that the way to curry favor with God was to sacrifice what was most precious to them, culminating with sacrificing their children to Moloch. Then along comes Abraham, and God tells him to sacrifice his only son to Him. Same story, or so it would seem. But at the last minute, God tells him to stop, and says that He Himself will provide a sacrificial Lamb. In other words, God doesn't want us sacrificing our sons to Him; He sacrificed His Son for us instead. He flipped the understanding of the ancient pagans on its head.

    • @MrCusefan44
      @MrCusefan44 Год назад +5

      @@SoRunThatYeMayObtain - I don’t believe that it is obvious. The 3rd Century theologian Origen developed a way of understanding the Scriptures. He perceived that not all parts of the Bible should be understood the same way; he distinguished between various “senses” of Scripture as literal, moral, anagogical and allegorical. The allegorical sense looks beyond the most obvious reading to illuminate some greater spiritual truth - one story which could fall in that category is the story of Abraham’s sacrifice. While there are some Christians today who take an almost entirely literalist interpretation of the entire Bible, that is a fairly new development and is well outside how scripture was broadly understood for most of church history.
      As a Christian, in the specific case of the story of Abraham and Isaac - if I’m asked if I believe it literally happened my response would be “I don’t know, and I don’t care”. Someone could provide compelling evidence either way, and it still would not impact or influence an allegorical understanding of the story.

    • @SoRunThatYeMayObtain
      @SoRunThatYeMayObtain Год назад +4

      @@MrCusefan44 Well, at least for me, Jesus mentioned things that happened in the OT and it seems to me he saw the flood as something that really happened. And with Paul, same goes for Abraham sacrificing Isaac. They saw it something that really happened. But I would be happy to be taught by others. I don't really know a lot.

    • @MrCusefan44
      @MrCusefan44 Год назад +1

      @@SoRunThatYeMayObtain - “Seems to me” is the key phrase in your comment. Go back, reread the passages you are referencing, and ask yourself what would eliminate an allegorical interpretation.
      As a non-Biblical example, I’ve listened to comparisons of Tony Stark’s sacrifice in Endgame to Christ’s sacrifice where - based solely on a written transcript of the commentary - you could not tell if the speaker honestly believed Iron Man existed. But a typical reader is going to bring outside context - it’s a movie, movies aren’t real, etc to conclude the speaker is aware Tony Stark/Iron Man are fictional characters. That’s appropriate in the case of Iron Man - but not appropriate in the context of Biblical exegesis. How are you concluding that Jesus believed Abraham literally believed the story with Issac?
      It almost certainly runs into the same issue atheists point out about Jesus believing a mustard seed is the smallest seed in the world - and literalists have to create increasingly unlikely interpretations to counter atheist arguments.
      The better argument is that we were given both scripture and tradition, and tradition never accepted a solely literalist interpretation. But accepting that would start many down the road of becoming Catholic, which is completely unacceptable - much better to hold fast to a newer Biblical view of literal exegesis which means atheist objections are valid.
      “Seems to me” is irrelevant - how did it seem to the church, and what traditions have been passed down. If “seems to me” contradicts that - you’re wrong, plain and simple.

Even if you don't believe, still talk to Him, like you would talk to a friend. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you. And if you TRULY want it, it will happen. I can't tell you when or how. I have to begin by saying that, im not a christian.
    Now that this is out of the way...
    Theres a deeper meaning behind the crucifixion of Christ than most atheists come out with and i have to point out that, even many christians. Most anti or pro fanatics against or for christianity quote bible verses completely out of context for their own personal goals.
    Problem with Bible is that, reading it and understanding it are two different things.
    For starters, its already written in a form that is quite difficult to read and second, it mostly contains stories and to understand meaning in these stories you have to read the entire story and understand it, not to quote single verses out of it that may support your narrative!
    When it comes to crucifixtion of Christ, its so much more than just ''he died for our sins''.
    It depicts a story of a loving god who manifests himself in a flesh and takes part in our mortal suffering. It makes it possible for him to forgive our sins without being unjust against some other who may have been a victim of said sin as he suffered and died himself for that sin.
    Anyway, wheather you whole heartedly want to believe it or not, its all up to you. Im not here with wild claims about what is right and what is wrong!

      God didn’t sacrifice himself to himself… Jesus was killed by the law of Moses on the basis of blasphemy (so man condemned him to death) not blood atonement for sins given by the people… the prophecy of blood atonement for all sin was fulfilled through God himself as man… since a lot of normal men/prophets went away or didn’t fully listen to the almighty… I don’t think any man in the Bible or now would take the flogging for a deity they haven’t seen besides Jesus himself maybe just maybe abraham from his test of faith but physical pain wasn’t involved, all would denounce… and God knew that… he saved all of us from the Egyptian/Canaan influenced condemnation of the law even the Pharisees were prideful and boastful under the law. “The lord detest all forms of pride of heart”

      You know what let's give you a good way to understand
      Let's say a CEO of a massive company is getting reports of the workers constantly dragging down the business and making the loyal workers do more work, working conditions are dropping, the sanitation of the whole place is awful, and people are bound to be fired which will result in them losing their jobs and in tern not being able to provide for their families. despite all of this the CEO is still rich, but he doesn't want them fired and want's to ensure their well being due to him they are able to pay for their families. he wants to make sure they know he cares about him by fixing up the place.
      so he can either:
      A) just hire more people to fix up the place but that will make the workers he cares about feel replaced
      or
      B) Personally come down to demote himself as a lowly janitor by cleaning the place up himself, encouraging the other workers and helping them with assignments, and showing the other workers that he cares.
      God HAS to do it because he has limited himself to a just character, if he DIDN'T judge sins and suddenly forgave them by tossing away the debt, he would be unjust. however, if he paid the debt of sin, this would fit in his framework of a just character. because the entire crucifixion is a reversal of the original sin in genesis.
      in conclusion, this was a act of love, justice, symbolism, and the message that god would humble himself for you.

Scientology must be somewhat correct since it didn't die out quickly. The Flat Earth hypothesis must have something since it's had a revival.

    Beautifully put. Now for those that still can't let go of the objection even after the explanation: the wages of sin is death because sin is antithetical to life itself. Requiring blood to atone for sin is just metaphorical language to signify that death is necessary to atone for sin ("the life of the flesh is in the blood"). Hence, the only way to resolve the disequilibrium created by sin is through death. Death is to sin what OH- (base) is to H30+ (acid), they neutralize one another and produce H20, however without God's intervention this way of resolving the sin problem would result in losing the person who was trapped in sin. If death is necessary to resolve sin, then how can sin be resolved without losing the person trapped in sin? Is there a way for this person to experience death without actually dying? The only way is for God Himself to take on human flesh, die sinlessly on our behalf, such that we can share in His death and indeed experience death to sin, thereby being spiritually revived and cured from the spiritual disease that is sin by being reconciled to God.
    That's as succinct as I can put it, which still doesn't do it justice, because the doctrine of salvation is so incredibly multi-faceted. However, the fact that the solution to such a complex and multi-dimensional problem is so simple and elegant does make it all the more ingenious and beautiful.

    In all honesty, I have belief in God as I’ve heard testimonies within my circle that they experienced his presence and even felt him in subtle ways, but I have trouble with the Bible. I have trouble with the fact that it tends to deliver messages ambiguously, to the point that there are differing interpretations on the same verses. How can a “perfect” book supposedly by the word of God can have followers with different conclusions about its content based on the denomination? I asked about Orthodoxy because that seems to have the most sound stance on biblical views based on the little research I’ve had, but even it falls short on some flaws. How am I suppose to discern from what is the most “authentic” interpretation or am I missing something? For anyone that reads, I’d love to get your insights.

    • @rizdekd3912
      @rizdekd3912 Год назад +1

      Sorry, but my insights mirror yours. The ambiguity of the gospel has led to several major religions and countless minor sects/denominations/churches. Each one claims they're the way and many of their doctrines diverge to the point of contradiction. Protestants think Roman Catholics blaspheme and Roman Catholics think Protestants blaspheme. Many Protestant denominations believe other denominations are headed the wrong way (the recent Methodist schism over homosexuality). At it's core, Christianity is simple...almost too simple. Just 'believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and those shalt be saved.' But almost NEVER does ANYONE leave it at that...not even Jesus himself who claimed many will on the last day say Lord Lord did we not cast out demons in your name and he will say to them depart from me because you did not do the will of the Father. So he seems to be saying not everyone who thinks he's a Christian will be saved. He also warns that broad is the path that leads to destruction and many will follow it but narrow is the way that leads to salvation and few will find it. SO, notwithstanding this video's assurance that there are 'so many' Christians in the world, it seem Jesus might be saying not ALL of them are actually Christians. Perhaps THIS is why Christianity is so popular today...it's a one-size fits all. At its core there are almost NO requirements except to believe one thing. Anyone can, with a thought, call himself a Christian.

For this to happen, the father teaches the child that crossing the road without looking both ways, doing narcotics, or for the younger folks: eating ice-cream after brushing your teeth, regardless of how tasty ice-cream is, are all bad choices. And if we try to earn our way, we will not see the gates of heaven. Rather, if you want salvation, stop working for it. Accept God's gift. God loves us so much, He gave us the option to CHOOSE a free gift. A gift that costs absolutely nothing. That is the only thing you have to do on your end, is to accept His gift, nothing more, nothing less.
      Also, isn't all love about finding that significant other, anyways? If you love someone, you wish to seek them out. But with God, all the seeking you have to do is accept His gift. He made it simple for a reason.

    The only frustration here is I feel like many may get the wrong idea about what Christ's love is about with such a heavy emphasis on Romantic love, which was not what I was expecting out of this video. I understand the need to start with a grounding point that people understand, but we have to transcend that. Kierkegaard really argues against how we need to get away from this weak sense of love and return to a more powerful sense of Christ's true love, that sacrificial, unlimited, non-discriminatory love is way different. It doesn't pick or discriminate, it is offered as a sacrifice for all who accept it. He argues:
    “With respect to love we speak continually about perfection and the perfect person. With respect to love Christianity also speaks continually about perfection and the perfect person. Alas, but we men talk about finding the perfect person in order to love him. Christianity speaks about being the perfect person who limitlessly loves the person he sees.”
    “Men think that it is impossible for a human being to love his enemies, for enemies are hardly able to endure the sight of one another. Well, then, shut your eyes--and your enemy looks just like your neighbor.”
    “When one has once fully entered the realm of love, the world - no matter how imperfect - becomes rich and beautiful, it consists solely of opportunities for love.”
    To embody Christ's Love is more than an emotional ROmantic love that you offer a life partner, your spouse. It's a ceaseless, undying, sacrificial love that is willing to bear burdens, a Cross, for those around you, regardless of being friend or foe.
    I recommend reading Kierkegaard's Book, Works of Love, to see what I mean. He truly helped me see better a glimpse into what it meant to embody Christ's love.
    Kierkegaard would agree with you though, there is an an irrational, absurd Component to Christianity that is just absolutely beautiful.

    1. Christianity is popular
    2. Salvation isn't "just rational" bc humans aren't just rational, emotions are also involved
    3. Only saved people understand the message of the gospel
    Don't get me wrong, the video has a very good production and several interesting points, I used to be christian and I get the appeal, but maybe unaware of it he is avoiding the elephant in the room:
    God didn't in any way, shape or form need pain to rescue anyone, if those were conditions to be met it was because God himself implemented the rules and the human flaws.

      @MACHO_CHICO Well that's entirely part of the problem too. I've brought up similar issues such as OP, and the response I get from Christians is that I'm "interpreting it wrong." Every Christian I met sees it differently from another, and that lack of consistency is a big problem for me, because if I, a nonbeliever, want to know God then how do I know which interpretation is correct? Christians can't even agree on that.

      @@AbOveandBeOnd1 I empathise with that as a non-denominational Christian myself, but you shouldn’t minimise the core tenants that all Nicene Christians (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox) hold to. We all agree in no particular order:
      -God is a Trinity
      -Jesus died for us
      -He bodily resurrected
      -He was born sinless of a virgin
      -He was God in the flesh
      -He will physically return
      -After accepting Him by faith and repentance and being in dwelt by the Holy Spirit, we should be baptised, take communion/Eucharist, and do good works
      I really believe it’s that simple when all is said and done, though I welcome your disagreement.

    Jesus was quoted saying on the cross: my god, my god, why have you abandoned me? (Eli, Eli, lima sbakhtani, in his own words). This is a proof that:
    - He was hung on the cross against his will.
    - He was not god because he was calling his god.
    - How can he redeem other people's sins if he could not help himself to an extent that he was asking for help from his god/father who could not help him.
    - His god did not help him, so how could he listen to his requests to redeem others' sins?
    - Also, he is expected to be back on earth; what's the point of coming back if he redeemed the sins of people who believed in him?

    I still struggle with this concept. An infinite, thrice holy God found me through time and loved me, my ancestors, and my descendants enough to die and give himself as a sacrifice to alone for the things I had yet done just to give me the chance to know him. He knew I could reject him. He knew I would disappoint him, and yet he still gave himself fully for me. Are they any other believers that still find the gospel both bitter and sweet and sufficient for them today?

    "We can only find this love in the story of the gospel." IP Claiming human sacrifice is "love" is just wrong. No wonder Christians can't see domestic abuse for what it is, and fail to see their "relationship" with Jesus/God is entirely one sided.

  • @akmroberts
    @akmroberts Год назад +3

    Very well put! I’ve always said that the answer to the absurdity claim is that the core motivation of Jesus’ sacrifice is not anthropocentric, but theocentric, IOW God had bigger fish than us to fry when Jesus died, namely defeating Satan and his accusations, and upholding his claim of being supremely loving and supremely just in the eternal realm. But your message makes for a beautiful flip side argument, thank you!

    It is us who killed Him. If we weren't the kind of creatures that would kill Him, then we wouldn't have and we would simply enjoy His presence.
    It is not rules God invented. Kain slaid Abel, and his blood cries out from the earth, in the depths of our souls, ever since. To hide, we, the descendants of Kain, continue the cycle.
    We are the ones who demand the blood sacrifice. And God is the one who's blood can ultimately bring us to our knees.
    We are Adam and we are Kain.
    The rest is just a thing every single one of us has to experience in our souls. There is no explanation in words. Words can only take us so far, we have to be brought by the actual mystical Union with God in the depths of our soul to experience the meaning for us.

    "No fighter is more divine than one who can achieve victory through defeat. In the instant when he receives the deadly wound, his opponent falls to the ground, himself struck a final blow. For he strikes love and is thus himself struck by love. And by letting itself be struck, love proves what had to be proven: that it is indeed love."-Hans Urs von Balthasar

    It's not that humans couldn't exist without stories. It's like asking if music could exist without sound.
    We are stories within stories. In a sense everything is stories, bit only humans are recursive story generating stories.
