I know you take your time to put these videos to help other people such as myself who knows very little about cars. What you also do is give people the push to try and do these things themselves instead of going to the dealer and pay their high cost. I truly appreciate the time and effort you take to do all these videos to give us an option of doing these things ourselves or taking it to a dealer. I also want to say as Dr. Ronnie Pace said 5yrs ago in his post, you do an amazing job communicating on how to do these fixes in a clear and concise way, so the average Joe Schmo "Like Me" can do this. Thank you Chris.
Chris, Thanks for this video, I just changed the diff oil in my wife's jeep liberty. It was pretty easy to do it simply following your instructions in the video. Regards from Juarez, Mexico.
Great video. Easy to follow and includes important tips to ensure all goes smoothly. Saved me a good chunk of cash by doing it myself. Thanks Chrisfix!
Thanks for your videos. I did mine buy just using a pump and hose to remove the fluid and then pumped new fluid back in. Took about 5 min. Not as thorough as your method but it is good enough for my old car to have 90-95% of the fluid changed.
Super great video! Thanks a lot brotha! Was able to do the exact same that you did on this vid. On my 1995 Ford F-150. Super simple steps (explained by you of course), excellent way to help out with the tools/materials needed before hand! I've never done more than an oil change, mechanically speaking, so this was great! Thank again! 😊
just wanted to add, some rear differentials also house "differential speed sensors." They to have a magnet on the tip that collects metal flakes and sludge. Im just saying that it may be beneficial to clean it prior to refilling your differential.
Hey chris...i dont know if anyone mention this, about filling up the differential, but when refilling the diff, as it starts to over flow, allow it to drain for a bit so the fluid can level off itself with the diff pan. This was a very helpful video. Thumbs up bro
Hey ChrisFix can you please make a video on how to change the front differential fluid on your truck? I have a 98 Ford Ranger 4x4 and there are absolutely no videos on RUclips. You make the best how to videos. Thanks.
hockison33 hey men!! I have a 1990 ford ranger 4.0 4x4. And chris make a video about the crank case oil change. And is the same for my truck. Im think will be the same for your's.
That 8.8 diff is not at all “hard to find a gasket for”, but you’re correct RTV works just fine. It’s good to clean out the “sump” area , the deep part just inside the bottom. Use a few paper towels or a rag to soak up and wipe out. That’s where the “gunk” will be.
This is exactly what I needed. A very clear view of everything plus expert advice. Superb video editing chris that was pleasing to watch. You are very talented thank you!
Your tutorials are clear, detailed, and timely for me. I just purchased a Ford Ranger, XLT, V6, 3.0, 2wd, regular cab. I followed your instructions for changing the fan clutch--saved a lot of money. The truck was very noisy. Now it is quiet but can still hear the engine stay at a high rpm until I come to a complete stop. It's not too loud but makes me feel that something still needs attention. Would you have a guess? I checked my throttle wire and it's not too tight. I've been considering changing the throttle body but I'm not sure it's the problem. I might not have a problem at all. Love to know your thoughts on it.
Thanks a lot and I am glad they are helpful (makes it all worth making these videos when people comment how it helped them!). As for your problem, is it cold where you live? Does it happen all of the time (at high and low speeds and when the engine warms up)? Does it happen when you rev the car in neutral? Is the O/D Off light blinking on the dash?
021121 HI Chris, I just had my differential fluid changed at Firestone. OMG! It was just over $100 service by them. I also had the oil changed. SURPRISE, then they came in to tell me I have an oil leak that the pan needs to be dropped and the gasket replaced. I have been parked in the same parking spot for some time now. There are NO oil drop stains on the asphalt but low and behold, the engine sounds different, more pings and clinks since I picked it up as well as the projected need for the oil pan and spark plug replacement. Huh? SALES, SALES, SALES! So the next work is the transmission fluid and gasket replacement at AAmco. I'm going to try the Power steering fluid change too but amazingly AAmco wants as much for that work as they do for the transmission fluid flush and gasket replacement. This all leaves me scratching my head and doubting my choices, Both of these organizations are back and referred by AAA of SoCal. I wish I had the space to try this on my own! Thanks! GD it! You got to watch these people like a HAWK!!!
hey chris love the vids I have a ranger myself and youv been a huge help ... I noticed in your videos when you pull stuff apart you tent to paint the parts to prevent rust it would be awesome if you had a quick video on painting frame and other parts under the truck what to do what not to do because I noticed you do that a fair bit and the truck looks awesome !
+Hsg Inc Thanks! Yea, I am a little crazy about making things look good. Even things you cannot see haha. I will have to do a video on painting the underside of my truck so stay tuned!
Freddy Patterson Brake Cleaner, he has it but is hesitant to tell people to to spray it in there. Any good shop will blast it with brake cleaner then wipe and refill.
One good idea is to always UNSCREW the fill plug before you take the back cover off and drain it. If that fill plug doesn't come out or gets stripped after you drain it you won't be able to drive your truck to a garage.
Great video man! Thanks a lot! i plan on doing this to my 01 sport trac this weekend. Would you reccomend removing the rear sway bar for easier access or just leave it? Thanks again.
Luis Nova Awesome! It really depends on what you want. It is easier to remove the sway bar and you might change the body bushings on that while you are at it.
ChrisFix Thanks! I'll definitely do that. on a side note, I've got a question...Where would you place a jack to lift the rear end? I've been told to use the differential to lift the rear but my manual says not to lift from there. Where would you recommend lifting from? Thank you so much for your videos! They've been a huge help.
Thanks for the helpful video, did have a question - Changed both front and rear diffs on my jeep today, when I took the covers off I noticed on both that there seemed to be what i can only describe as "soap bubbles" here and there (not on the cover but inside the diff). The gears looked fine, didn't have any metal flakes, and before I dumped them I checked the level and they were full. When the fluid poured out into the pan I didn't notice any bubbles. With most fluids seeing bubbles is bad, is this something i should be concerned about? Thanks.
Just thinking, isn't there a way, some kind a hose (tool) maybe that can be inserted all the way to the bottom through filler hole to suck out all of the fluid :/. As a quick fix.
I'm not a mechanic and there's no way I can do this myself, but I just got an oil change today for my 2009 Jeep Liberty (60k) and they told me the rear differential oil needs changing. They took a sample to show me and said it was too dark and sludgy (it did look almost black and very sludgy, they said it should look like honey). The Jeep dealership wanted over $400 to do this. I just had the entire drive train replaced on that darned car. Bought it a year ago at 34k miles, by 40k miles the transfer case was shot and at 46k miles I had to put in a rebuilt transmission and rebuilt rear differential (did not do at a Jeep dealership, went to transmission specialist friend knows). That entire job came with a 2 year/24k mile warranty, so after the Jeep dealership oil change today telling me the rear differential fluid doesn't look right, I'm going to take it back to the guy who still has the whole drive train project under warranty. But at least now I have some idea what they are talking about and what needs to be done. I have to assume that when he put the rebuilt rear differential in 9 months ago (14k miles ago) he must have also included new rear differential fluid. So, not sure why it would have gone bad so soon. But this was a very good video, even for someone who knows nothing about fixing cars and it's helpful for me to know what they are talking about when I take the car back in. Thank you!
Thankfully, I did not pay that. Took to guy who did rebuilt differential a few months ago, he said it all looked fine. A friend of mine looked at it (knowing it had just been rebuilt), said he can change the fluid himself, without having to take it all apart like in this video. He showed me the drain plug which is easily accessible and said he has some special tool to suck it all out after it's drained and then can just refill. Good old Jeep dealership wanted $415 to do it. Glad I at least knew enough to say 'NOPE!'
It seems to be six of one and half a dozen of the other. 50% of the people I know with Jeeps LOVE them and have never had any problems at all, swear by them, the other half have had nothing but trouble with them. There seems to be no in-between. I just don't get it. There are a TON of these 2009 Liberty's on the road in my area and I stop all the time in parking lots and ask their owners if they've had any trouble with them. Only a couple have said yes. Nobody else has said they had transmission/drive train problems. I definitely got a lemon.
No dude. The whole Chrysler line up is notorious for horrendous quality and reliability. You will always find people loyal to Chrysler, no matter how badly their vehicles perform.
Wynn Stewart I would wait overnight to fill and then drive it. Just to play it safe and let the gasket harden 100% but an hour or two is long enough by the label on the RTV.
Chris, great video. Two questions... 1) I have grinding in the rear diff. and was told to use the brakeleen to spray out the whole inside. Your thoughts please. 2) it’s snowing at the moment. Will the cold affect the gasket in any way?
Chris couldn't you spry the diff with brake cleaner also as long as you give it appropriate time to dry. I just purchased a Silverado that has never had diff service 140000mi so i want to help remove any contaminants that are in there. Or how could i go about cleaning the diff better, thanks in advance.
so glad all my sumps have drain and fill plugs. my last vehicle did too... seems to be my former domestics that make my life hard... cheaper too, no gaskets
my jeep laredo 2007 has a humming noise from the front differential.. the fluid is new. Since we never use the 4 wheel drive option, is it recommended to remove the drive shafts to get rid of the noise? or should we check the transfer case fluid level as well cos thats the only point left to be inspected!!
Chris, did you ever do a video on replacing the front differential oil? I did it today on my '05 Ranger.I had to pump the fluid out of the fill hole with a siphon pump.
hamilton5071 I have not (I really need to lol). I was trying to find a way to get the cover off but I think I will have to pump it out like you did. Was it hard to pump out?
ChrisFix Kind of. It was difficult to work the hose in as i think some of the gears are in the way but i played with it and eventually got it close to the bottom to pump everything out. I ended up getting about 1.3 quarts out of it. I cant remember how much the front holds in these trucks but i'm pretty sure its less than 2 quarts so i would say i got most of it. I used one of those little hand pumps like the one you show in the beginning of this video.
ChrisFix Also expect to do A LOT of pumping. The fluid in mine had about 100,000 miles on it so it was thick, black and nasty and the pump had a hard time getting it out. I pumped for probably a solid 20 minutes straight. Thanks for the videos Chris. They are very helpful to me as i learn more about working on cars. Its nice that you have the Mazda too so that way when i do things on my Ranger they are identical to what you show.
Chris, my 1994 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham with 250k miles, has developed a hum or roar coming from the rear differential and it starts at about 55-60 mph, but stops when speed goes down. Would replacing the differential fluid or just adding 4 oz of ACDelco friction modifier (if possible) be of any help. Otherwise what is best route to stop the roar. The VIN is 1G6DW52P0RR719431. Thank you thank you for the video
Dude. Tks for the video. Quick question, can i confirm that for most modern front wheel drive vehicles such as 2009 Camry, the front differential and the transmission are in the same housing (meaning to say that if i change the transmission fluid, I would be changing the front differential fluid at the same time?
I was wondering if you could get back to me on this, I have a 2000 chevy silverado 1500 with 2wd. it's an open diff and I want to put a lunchbox locker in the rear different but I'm unsure about it. thank you if you get a chance to read this :)
Hey chris, if my gears from R to D shift harsh does than mean i need to do a rear differential Oil change ? Also when i reverse i hear some clunk noise
Hi Chris, I looked under my car (2014 Kia Optima) and I don’t see the differential gear box... I looked at my manual and there is no mention of differential. How does one Change the differential fluid if we don’t see a differential box or know what oil to use because it’s not listed in the manual?
I know you take your time to put these videos to help other people such as myself who knows very little about cars. @@chrisfix lol looks like you need a filler plug on that hairline lol
@ChrisFix here we are, 11 years later & you're still making the world a better place. Now I'm all fired up to refill Astro's differential.
I think you did an excellent job communicating how to do this. Clear and to the point. Great job!
Ronnie Pace Thanks Ronnie!
By far the most clear, concise, and well communicated "how to" video I have seen. Thanks for the help!
I never comment on RUclips videos but I gotta say. You do great work. Very simplistic yet great information in your videos. Thank you very much
Your videos, Chris, are always visually excellent, clear andconcise, and well edited. Thank you.
Chris,
Thanks for this video, I just changed the diff oil in my wife's jeep liberty. It was pretty easy to do it simply following your instructions in the video.
Regards from Juarez, Mexico.
Alberto Ríos Awesome Alberto! That is what my videos are all about so thanks for letting me know! Thanks for the shout out from Juarez, Mexico!
great video. thanks to this I turned the $150 job the mechanic charged me into a $30 job
2021: $600 into $30
2013: "hey guys"
2020: "HEYYYY GUYSSSS!!"
I have seen so many videos, so far you are the best 👍
You’ve came along ways with your videos 👍🏾
Thanks
Great video. Easy to follow and includes important tips to ensure all goes smoothly. Saved me a good chunk of cash by doing it myself. Thanks Chrisfix!
Thanks for keeping it real simple, Also your video is excellent, I’m teaching my grandson and this really makes it easy for an 11year old.
VERY informative!!! My 14 year old son is comfortable doing this now. Great video ChrisFix!!!
Awesome! That is exactly what I love to hear! Teach 'em young! Happy Holidays!
I've watched 4 other vids on this and none of them were as good. Thanks for all the details!
Thanks for your videos. I did mine buy just using a pump and hose to remove the fluid and then pumped new fluid back in. Took about 5 min. Not as thorough as your method but it is good enough for my old car to have 90-95% of the fluid changed.

Excellent video! How could you not like this video if you are serious about making fluid change?
excellant video, very easy to follow and clear camera angles.

Using this Video to work on my 1971 GTO. Thanks Chris!
Another excellent video Chris!
Thanks!
Nice Job! Thanks for taking the time to put this video out there.
awesome video, i dont have a torque wrench but ima go for it anyway :) thanks from so cal usa 87 4x4 ranger
Outstanding video. Clear and concise.
Your videos are untouchable!!! 👍
This made a 160$ job into a 70$ job, woulda been cheaper but I needed to buy the tools. 👌
Excellent video.
021121 HI Chris,

Thanks!
GD it! You got to watch these people like a HAWK!!!
Good video although I would add that it wouldn't be a bad idea to rinse the old fluid out of the diff with some brake cleaner.
i love all these videos. Thanks Chris
Your the man Chris love you brother have a blessed day
How about some new shocks Chris! Lol. Love the videos!

Do you have a video where you replace/upgrade gear ratio? I want to do gears on my truck and your videos are great and very detailed. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
hey its your head! thanks for the videos i love you
Quick an simple man thanks
Great video, very detailed and simple instructions.
Youre the pro chris but just a quick question,, can you use synthetic oil with RTV
Great video, why not spray cleaner inside the housing then flush it out with something like WD40 and wipe the shavings from the bottom of housing?
Freddy Patterson Brake Cleaner, he has it but is hesitant to tell people to to spray it in there. Any good shop will blast it with brake cleaner then wipe and refill.
I love your videos, this is my next job on my Mazda as well. I also like how you say pound feet of torque, the proper way to say it.
One good idea is to always UNSCREW the fill plug before you take the back cover off and drain it. If that fill plug doesn't come out or gets stripped after you drain it you won't be able to drive your truck to a garage.
This should be the top comment
the old gear oil comes in great for using in the wood STOVE INSIDE the shop in the winter months. a good way to get rid of it.
I like the video good job everything worked out fine thank you
Would it be easier to use a gasket instead of RTV especially if you service the rear differential every 18 months?
Great instruction video, I found it very useful 👍
Hey Chris. Found your rear diff change, but can't find the front diff change?? Can you send the link?? Thanks
Looked up basic video... turns out it's for a ranger.... and I'm doing this on a ranger! Cool beans
Luis Nova Every manual says not to use the rear diff, but everyone, including me, does.
Thank you so much for this cool video.
this is an excellent video.
Thanks a lot!
Very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to make this.
Bcc074 No problem! Glad the video was helpful! New automotive 'how to' videos every Thursday and most Mondays so stay tuned!
Ok so i was told to use gasket sealant with the new gasket. But I'm not sure if i need to put the gasket sealant on both sides of the gasket?
I love at the end “check out these other videos I did” and you see another one or two that saved your ass already 😂
Great vid. Thanks.
Do you have a video of you doing the front differential?
very well explained great job thanks for posting
good summary
Thanks for the helpful video, did have a question - Changed both front and rear diffs on my jeep today, when I took the covers off I noticed on both that there seemed to be what i can only describe as "soap bubbles" here and there (not on the cover but inside the diff). The gears looked fine, didn't have any metal flakes, and before I dumped them I checked the level and they were full. When the fluid poured out into the pan I didn't notice any bubbles. With most fluids seeing bubbles is bad, is this something i should be concerned about? Thanks.
If u see bubbles, then there's air, when there's air, it can dry it out quicker
Hi Chris, Has you ever considered doing a video on the front Pinion seal on your Mazda? Do you think this is a job you could do in your driveway?
Just thinking, isn't there a way, some kind a hose (tool) maybe that can be inserted all the way to the bottom through filler hole to suck out all of the fluid :/. As a quick fix.
You would never get all of the old fluid out. Plus you would not have the ability to clean the gears, a really important step
Nice vid
Very helpful...good sequential explanation!
Thomas Cejka Thanks and I am glad the video was helpful!
I'm not a mechanic and there's no way I can do this myself, but I just got an oil change today for my 2009 Jeep Liberty (60k) and they told me the rear differential oil needs changing.
(That friend used to work at a Jeep dealership himself years ago so he knows exactly how to do it....)

After the hour has passed to allow RTV to dry can it be driven or do I have to wait the full 24 hours for it to fully cure before driving the vehicle?
no he let the hour pass before he finished torquing the bolts down.
thank, you for you're video.

Mike Cullinan Use the weight the differential calls for. Using anything else can result in damage.
Thanks
Chris, my 1994 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham with 250k miles, has developed a hum or roar coming from the rear differential and it starts at about 55-60 mph, but stops when speed goes down. Would replacing the differential fluid or just adding 4 oz of ACDelco friction modifier (if possible) be of any help. Otherwise what is best route to stop the roar. The VIN is 1G6DW52P0RR719431. Thank you
thank you for the video
Can the RTV bulk out on the inside/mechanical side? If so I can imagine that breaking down on the inside.
Dude. Tks for the video. Quick question, can i confirm that for most modern front wheel drive vehicles such as 2009 Camry, the front differential and the transmission are in the same housing (meaning to say that if i change the transmission fluid, I would be changing the front differential fluid at the same time?
Daren Teo Yes, the front diff is built into the tranny in front wheel drive cars. So changing the tranny fluid is also servicing the diff.
I was wondering if you could get back to me on this, I have a 2000 chevy silverado 1500 with 2wd. it's an open diff and I want to put a lunchbox locker in the rear different but I'm unsure about it. thank you if you get a chance to read this :)
What would be a good interval for differential fluid change?
LBYINCHINA once a year or after 30,000 kms you should inspect the level and then change it every 2 yrs or 60,000 kms
LBYINCHINA 60000 miles
Hey chris, if my gears from R to D shift harsh does than mean i need to do a rear differential Oil change ? Also when i reverse i hear some clunk noise
Hey guys I want to know how to find the drain plug on a Saturn vue 2005
Hi Chris,
I looked under my car (2014 Kia Optima) and I don’t see the differential gear box... I looked at my manual and there is no mention of differential. How does one Change the differential fluid if we don’t see a differential box or know what oil to use because it’s not listed in the manual?
That's because your car is front wheel drive, you won't have a rear differential!
ChrisFix is there a front differential?
I have a 2000 Ford Excursion 2wd with a 140 K I don't think the differential fluid has been changed do you advise a change with an additive?
Would the process be the same for a 99-04 mustang?
Yes
Hey Chris!! Thank you 🙏🏾
Thank you Chris :)
I brought brand new Suzuki every da17 it's already 44,000km done do I need to change the gear oil ?
I would check your owners manual to see when it needs to be done, if it is overdue then change it!
