Many thanks to the talented Jeff Holcomb for putting all of this together from filming through to editing. Check out his other videos here - / jeffecation Видеоклипы
I love how Nolly doesn't need a guitar tech to help him do the rig rundown! He knows everything from the preamp inside his bass to the mic on his 6x10 cabinet!!
Peace from Morocco
He also tunes the drums for matt every night. even if they don't change the heads, he still tunes them. he's probably the most useful bass player in any band, ever
+lucas wroblewski then again, he is a producer. He has to know his shiet lol
+anahowana And he doesn't need a host either... very vocal and interactive guy it seems. If he didn't play bass he might be a good report or host..
+L Wroblewski And he writes some of the guitar riffs...
ruclips.net/video/KKK5GK7PrLU/видео.html here you can see bassist of tesseract, without whom the whole band live shows would be completely fucked lol
you know you're a gear head when you realized you watched this whole 12 min video and did not get bored once. A lot of gear to achieve one sound, but truly interesting none the less.
this guy knows more about tone than i ever thought was possible
+Anthony Beare he just knows a lots about throats
Is his last name actually ''Getgood?'' That's the most badass thing I've ever heard.
AHAHAHA
Bro no lmao
@@MannyMo_ bro yes…his real name is Adam Getgood
Peripherig II: This Gear is Personal.
This may be the first time in history that we have caught a Bass Player changing his strings
Chris Bourland
Were you sent by Glenn Fricker...!!!??? :D
***** Rule number 2 does not apply here!
Caleb knott
I agree. :)
+Caleb knott What is rule number 2?
But the thing is I always feel like shit after buying strings because they cost so much XD
I have watched this over 10 times ... I don't even play bass ..
EDIT: Update, I now play bass.
Watching it again ,,,
Same here, the passionate way that Nolly talks about what he does is really inspiring. Makes me want to play bass.
***** I agree completley. I've decided to pick up bass just because of Nolly.
Same, his tone is fucking incredible
@@Jevta624 no matter how many times you've watched it..you're never gonna watch it enough
Damn, this video is tight. You're a sick guy Nolly. Hope all is well duder,
PS - you're a lovely speaker.
I agree, V30 ain't got shit!
Emil Bringsli dat joke

I can't afford this tone.
+Bishop Toci This is awfully true.
+Bothropus in the context of their music it makes a lot of sense. it really compliments their other guitarists and makes a thick heavy tone. live it's very powerful sounding
+Mark Walters Agreed. Which makes it kinda hard for me to decide whether I should get one. In most videos that I've seen Dingwall's being used they sound just sooo awful on their own. This video imo is actually worst of all. But once they're in the mix they cut so well and fit right in. Not to take anything away from Nolly's skill and of course all of this is a matter of personal taste. Just saying it's a bloody conundrum.
+Tobias Ommer yeah that's totally understandable. I think the hard thing with bass is, what you sound like live doesn't sound all that great because you're meant to fit in the mix. like, you would mix a bass completely different live than you would in your bedroom alone. However, I think Dingwall basses really cater to the guys who play heavier, lower tuned music. In my opinion, and from what I've seen from videos, you need to do a lot of eq'ing to get a good bedroom tone from a dingwall.
As for the overdrive, I think it sounds so meaty and like Nolly says, "throaty." Dingwall and darkglass and axe fx are all players trying to change the game I think. Within this kind of music in particular, and with bass guitar, tube amps, and traditional electronics (darkglass in the NG-2), there's this movement to create a brand new way of hearing the bass. Being a metal bassist myself, I want my role in the band to serve a worthwhile purpose. I don't wanna just be the low end. I wanna be just as valuable as everyone else.
Kinda went on a rant but yeah. rock and roll.
not gonna lie bro its not exactly a strong bass tone at all, it just sounds like a guitar tunes low with a horrible fizzy distortion. you can get that tone easily and cheap
I love Nolly so much. He's so kind, humble, and most inspiring musician these day.
Nolly is just one of my favourite people ever. The gear is incredible, it's not too overkill, he explains why he uses what he has clearer than about 90% of musicians in the world, he's just generally bringing Metal Bass forward with technology and I could just listen to him talk all day!
The secret to Periphery being one of the best Metal bands in the world is definitely Nolly. Why? Because he's British.
Lmao no
Most interesting rig rundown I've seen.
i know i cant stop watching it
ive literally watched it like ten times
TheBBQify He knows his shit.
Those basses look like something from 10 years from now. They both look badass but the first model with the Dark Glass preamps... damn.
12ealDeal well it’s been 5 years since this comment and there are a lot more basses like this... guess you were right
Still checks out, these things are basically everywhere now lol
8 years since this comment, still holds up
yeah 9 years on...
Hi, I'm from 10 years from now. Yes Dingwall bass is now the "standard" in modern metal.
long story short this video is the reason I'm 6 months behind on rent.
That dark glass pedal really does help improve the sound of that low F# string. Should I ever decide to tune down super low, I might have to find one and give it a shot.
Nikolas Addonizio It's one hell of a pedal!
+Nikolas Addonizio it's either a B7K or a Tech 21 sansamp to get away with playing a low F# nothing comes close in getting the tone to pop out like those 2.
That. Fucking. Tone. Good. God.
Do not neglect the tone!
Fast forward to 2022 rig rundown. Protools running tracks.
I don't think RUclips's compressed audio does his tone much justice.
I'd imagine it sounds 100x better live.
Very informative video though! I learned quite a bit!
BillyBob Keith I've been to a Periphery show and never before had I heard a low F# ring out so clear. It's got insane low end that the camera can't really pick up. Darkglass B7s are especially known for preserving the fundamental note no matter how crazy you go with the drive.
***** Recently saw them as well, his live bass tone is one of the best I've heard (in this genre)
I like how Nolly is using this rig set up and at the time Danny from Veil of Maya is just using a Sansamp Rack mount PA through lmao.
Good lord, my face just melted :O
Say what you will but that tone is insane in a mix.
Nolly had to practice to Getgood
+MrOlzari1 yeah... lol, needs to change his name to Gotgood now
He's beengood
I've never seen basses like that. Good lord
really high end stuff. alot different than anything that fender makes.
Dingwall made by Sheldon dingwall. They are up and coming start at around 1200 dollars Canadian upto ive seen as high as 15000 dollars Canadian. they've been booming the last 3 years and their is a lot of bassists that use them you wouldn't suspect. they originate from Saskatchewan Canada
you ever watch something that makes you think "I need to be practicing more" 10:23
+JoshC NZL tbh its not that hard too be honest just put some time into it and yeah you will be on your way
literally the best rig rundown of all time
ONE FOR ALL THE GUITARS AND DRUMS TOO :D
Gear pron, hell yeah :D
Thanks for the video, very interesting.
I love your cover, Remi!
Buy gear for Nolly bass tone, or buy new car..... Hmmm.........
Nolly bass tone it is
You can move in speed of car by the bass tones from this rig. :D
If you are choosing between gear to achieve the "Nolly" sound or buying a new car, which piece of gear would you buy first?
in the same predicament right now
If we're talking about an approximation (I don't believe you could ever achieve his exact tone because you're not him), I'd go for B7K, purely based on this video and how much it changes the sound. Maybe also because it's the cheapest part of the rig x) I'd very much like to try a Dingwall NG-2 but I don't think it's necessary to get his sound + it's most likely also a personal comfort thing with the extended scale.
Adam is probably one of the most well-spoken and intelligent musicians/producers I've come across. Or maybe it's just the accent ;)
I can't stop watching the demonstration he does at the end. The tone is simply perfect. I love the sound he gets out of it.
What a lovingly clear and concise description of his tone and gear setup. Nolly is so professional.
Probably one of the most beastly sounds I've ever heard. Perfect balance of clarity, aggression and thump! I also greatly admire how methodical your approach is Nolly. Kudos!
Nolly, never stop talking about gear. You are just too good at it and I could listen to you all day.
I always found it cool that there is an Englishman in my favourite band. Absolutely love the sound you and the other guys churn out
Absolutely my favourite bass tone. Clear, focused and punchy. Pleasure to listen to.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing a gear rundown and doing it WELL! Being able to hear and see why you use each piece of gear is amazing. And i could listen to that solo bass all day...that to me is the mark of a great rig.
Breakdown in "Ji" that he plays at 10:26 is my all-time favorite musical Periphery moment!
It was one of best bass sound that i have ever heard. So massive and powefull, just like bass truly must be
*10:25** YOU'RE WELCOME!*
Goddamn. That bass tone is fucking insane.
I can't get enough of that bass tone! I think I've watched the last two minutes of this video 10 times in the last week. Plus, Ji is such an epic tune.
Never heard him speak before. Knew he was British... thought he'd have a real deep, gruff voice, and use an informal way of speaking. Instead, he sounds like an English gentleman, haha.
Whether you like his band/approach or not, I have to say this was a VERY good gear rundown. It is amazing when musicians understand their gear and why they use it, and are able to explain it so naturally.
Another one of my favorite bassist. people like him are the real reason bass is important.
Excellent demo on the rig. Very clear and informative. Thanks Nolly!
One of the best live rig rundowns ever.
Best gear rundown video I've ever seen, this is how they should be done.
wow nolly is a good speaker
Yeah, he did a great job in the bkp videos as well!
Wow. What a tone. Awesome. Love the sound gate and compressor
Thank you for doing a Rig Rundown and actually playing your bass in it!
4:09
This guy really thought this through... A thin pick having a compressor effect is something I never realized
I love everything about this tone
I thought he would sound like michael from vsauce
I laughed out loud while sitting on the bus, thanks a lot!
I know this is about your bass rig but I really dig that sweater
The sound is Incredible!!!!! Love it.....Thank You for the video
Thanks for putting the time into making this, an interesting watch too.
+Tim McDonald I use a set of 55-110 for the top 4 strings, then a 160 for the low G. Good amount of tension, and it sounds amazing.
Phenominal musicain and a well spoken gentleman too. :) Love your work Nolly!
I'm amazed of how relaxed is your picking hand.. awesome sound, BTW
You know a guy is talented if he makes you wanna pick up your instrument before he even starts playing. Love it.
you're such a dude Nolly, so well spoken! thanks for the rundown
I just got ahold of the Microtubes B7K from Darkglass Electronics and I've never been happier with my bass tone
This was a nice surprise to find in my RUclips feed :) great vid Nolly, cheers
I want that Dingwall, looks so nice!
Been waiting for this for a long time
thanks for this vid nolly, also cant wait to see (and hopefully purchase) your sig bass
amazing sound and awesome pedal B7K
This further proves that Nolly is the coolest member of Periphery :)
I really enjoy watching this video. Nolly can explain everything so clear.. Easy to understand video.. Cool!
beautiful stuff, great job explaining, too
The bass tone is huge live!
Incredibly informative!
damn, awesome sound you get with this gear!
I truly appreciate musicians that make their own rig rundowns rather than just having the tech guy do it
Awesome rig!
Really good fragment's of Ji!
The fanned frets give each string it's own length, like the strings on a pianos soundboard. This makes all the notes across the neck truer to their frequencies without comprise; like the traditional parallel fretted instruments. I believe there is an ergonomic advantage to this as well.
I could honestly just listen to that bass playing by itself in a song
that tone and that tuning.. amazing 😶 then again his tone is suitable for Periphery style, and it's not for everyone. but for heavy tone i actually love this tone, clear and no muddy, especially in low frequency.
Impressive. Sounds great!
They should just do a Gear Rundown - Periphery - Live Rig
Great vid. Informative all the way through
Love that carbon fiber pickguard.
This isn't what I'd expect his bass to sound like, but it clearly does wonders in the mix.
That is one of the coolest basses I have every seen. I want one so bad!!!
and I don't even play bass!
i love your dingwall bass.... beautifull
i wish i could hear the "spank" and the tin throaty sound on the record, it adds so much dynamic. hail to the king baby!
Sick tone! Not really what I'm after but twangy and heavy for sure!
Such a talented guy. It’s sad that he isn’t touring anymore.
awesome rig!
I always say it. I'm bummed I missed the Nolly era of Periphery live.
Never have I wanted to play bass more than now
Hey he has a Dingwall! WOOT WOOT! I love mine.
Killin' it.
he kind of reminds me of Vsauce ;p
Yess lolololol
That's starting to become a meme. XD
Beautiful basses
The B7K might be one of the best pieces of gear I've ever bought for my rig. Its worth the hype and the money. I try never to play bass without it now! Haha.
Amazing tone. much skill.
That Cali76 compressor is sweet. Now to check its price and most likely get my dreams crushed!
Awesome rundown. Excellent bass player. To all you haters be sure to realize Nolly plays the guitar as well. From his tone when he says "for bass" pretty much says it. Extremely nice guy in person. As are all the guys in Periphery.
i love the g-spot!
