That Dingwall/Darkglass combo is now as recognizable as that PRS/TripleRecto tone on the 00's nu metal
Right!!! Spot on! ✌🏻
disgusting, isn't it?
Sounds nice in a mix with three other guitars. On it's own, it sounds like the Tin Man with gastroenteritis.
PRS? I must have missed that memo
@@sqlb3rn dude really? Incubus, POD, Puddle of mud, Limp Bizkit, Creed, Disturbed, Chevelle, even Nickelback ffs
Wow! I am not a metal player, but I learned a bunch about setting tone and how pedals influence the various sonic areas of the bass. Thanks Nolly and Scott.
i started integrating this metal bass tone philosophy into my sound for my pop rock with some hints of prog band. putting a slight distortion blended on top of my p bass clean tone (old roundwounds) helps me stick out as a distinct voice in the midrange, and when put in context it doesn't sound distorted.
I do the same I love the pronounced clank
yes to this. helps to bring out the quack from flatwounds
P-Bass with dirt is sooo nice in a mix
"Piano tone" was my thing for 30+ years. Recently discovered distortion with blend.
It's subtle, if I A/B the pedal on and off its obvious. But just a bit o grit you would barely notice on its own gives me fantastic sustain and makes the whole band sound bigger.
To have great bass tone you MUST be bald.
I’m short and have a thick head of hair…also a terrible bass player.
It’s true, I started practicing bass more and my luscious locks immediately started retracting back into my head
And wear glasses.
@@Lance37a oh! I didn’t notice that! Crap!
And glasses
I just split with an octave pedal, run the clean through a subwoofer and bass amp, run the other through a guitar amp with a shitload of distortion and adjust them individually. Bare in mind I dont do live anything so that could be a nightmare trying to run through a PA, but for recording and jam sessions here it works great.
Dude... People tell that the metal community is terrible, but the comment section of this video show that the jazz one may be even worse
Nah those are just snobby boomer bass players. Let them have their jameson P bass tones, they're not for anything else
The jazz community is god awful. The only reason black metal fans are worse is the white supremacy
I’m not even a metal fan but I’ve hung out with metalheads. These dudes are super nice and fun to be around with.
That's not just any studio, that's Real World Studios in Bath, owned by Peter Gabriel himself! Me and my band were lucky enough to win a single recording there and it was a life highlight for all of us. Such a beautiful place.

Nolly is a genius. Do remember that he played bass on Periphery because there was no bassist then. He is primarily a guitarist who took up on bass because he could in one of the crazy modern progressive band.
#WorldClassMusician
Most bass players are guitar players that took up bass, because can't everyone be a guitar player
@@sqlb3rn nolly is the best guitarist in periphery
tbf Periphery actually had a bassist (Tom Murphy) before Nolly.
That's why he isn't good enough to pick with his fingers
@@sixthgatebassNolly actually is crazily skilled at slapping and tapping on bass. He knows how to properly play bass for sure considering he’s one of the best producers in the world at the moment
Definitely not the same philosophy for distortion on bass in other genres. Often, fuzzy, blurry sounds are desirable in other contexts (punk, shoegaze, etc.). Just remember, folks, if it sounds good, it is good!
I was a little disappointed when I saw they were only using 1 bass pedal, I wanted to see some fat gain-staging lol. No sleight to anyone in the video, I'm just more a fan of the super dirty fuzzed out bass tones than I am of blended clean/distorted signals when it comes to heavier music. You can definitely make it work other ways B)
Well this guys talking about shitty modern metal production techniques, not just metal in general. There are plenty of metal bands that used fuzzy bass tones and that’s what gives them personality. This guys tone has zero personality.
@@triad5766 This guy is actually the one who invented this tone that every one is replicating today ;)
@@viviencheneveau1648 yeah and that’s why modern metal sounds like shit. Everything sounds the same and there’s no rawness anymore

I absolutely love the sound of Dingwall basses, any style of music. Thanks for sharing this, Nolly is awesome. I still can’t believe his last name is also “Getgood,” it’s the exact mantra I use to justify maybe getting an NG3 some day
When Lee Sklar and John Taylor weild them...
I have a dingwall and it doesn't get mentioned enough how versatile it is for all genres. And it's sound is the cleanest sound I've ever had from a bass
@@joshjones9749 yes, the low end is so precise and clean + a lot of character overtones
@@josuastangl7140 The low B string is the cleanest b string on a 5 string I've ever heard. I had to order a 6 string, can't wait til it comes in.
@@joshjones9749 yes, same for me. My 35" B string sounds fine, but not as good as those 37" by far
One thing they didn’t mention is that distortion really helps your bass cut on smaller speakers, too. The added harmonic content tricks your brain into perceiving the lower fundamental information on speakers that simply can’t produce such frequencies. Recording it in parallel then finding a nice balance melts the bass into the guitars while retaining that clean, ground-shaking low end. If you REALLY wanna kick certain parts into overdrive, you can come back and double yourself on piano (the low notes, obviously). Piano notes are clean, dramatic and have a satisfying transient…so while it’s obviously not for every moment of every track (and you wanna keep it low in the mix), it can be the climactic X-factor that makes someone go “dude!” when they hear your track.
Thanks Nolly and Scott for yet another great informative video. And thanks to Ian for the breakdown on what’s going on. Great combo guys.
Bass tone is super important for almost every genre of music. Great vid!!
Just a shame Nolly and Darkglass are all about treble tone!

Peter Steele is the best example of using guitar pedals for bass.
Great interview Scott & Nolly, I use the DI-2112 Geddy Lee pedal works great for this idea.
dUG Pinnick of King's X has had this sound for about 35-40 years!
I just saw his signature sansamp on craigslist for cheap like $150… tempting
I love that Scott put on a fake accent with Nolly to make him feel comfortable and loved 🥰
Those are two different blokes btw. In case you were serious but if not... nice one
Chris Squire using the stereo rickenbacher would have one side be slightly distorted and the other signal completely clean with scooped mid range the combination produces thunderous stunning tone
Chris Squire perfected bass tone, imo
Rickenbacker 4001/4003 basses are great for this because they have two outputs, one is regular mono like on a Fender, and the other is a TRS "stereo" which sends the output of each pickup through a separate channel. You can run the neck pickup to a clean bass amp and run the bridge pickup to a gained-up guitar amplifier (with a bass speaker cabinet, of course) and crank both amps into bass heaven. It's a lot of gear to drag to a gig, but when you get a chance to do it it sounds awesome.
And I should add, your guitar player might hate you lol
The Darkglass vst lets you save your settings which is a lifesaver.
I met Nolly in 2008 when Periphery was touring before they even got signed. Tom Murphy had just gotten married and couldn't be on the tour. He's such a nice guy and very approachable.
Thanks for sharing!

Thats exactly what I did when my darkglass b7k broke - I got my guitar pedals and split signal (with BOSS LS-2) to distort one of them with (Blackstar HT dual) and compressed the other one with compressor just to combine them back
The two most calm, competent, bald bass Brits. Really fun video!
I rekon for recording, no matter what blend features you have… its always best to have a clean split also, … even if just for re-amping later
Great stuff! Nolly is the man!
Excellent stuff!!
I've always loved deep growly bass sounds - like Doug Pinnick (King's X) has, or even Billy Sheehan. They both split their signal as well to retain that low end properly.
But I love the old school approach too, for instance Lemmy and Geezer: using what 'used to be' a guitar amp 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I use the EBS Billy Sheehan pedal, which has indeed got a blend, and good EQ-ing on board as well.
Lots of rock guitarists used bass amps too, to get tighter low end response, lol
Doug is an absolute tone genius
About time this video got on this channel
Killer video thanks a lot! I have been experimenting with bass distorsion a lot without getting satisfaction. The blend knob is mandatory IMO.
B7K cheaper alternative could be the T-Rex Bass Juice (more vintage) and even the Moller can do the job. When I have a DAW I route through 2 (or more) signal chains.
I am bald too for starters. I blend my live signal through a YA/B box with one clean and an Alpha Omega pedal combined and it’s massive! See Goliath ( Karnivool).
Oh shit, is that Real World studios?? Such a fucking beautiful space, loved this video guys.
very nice. thank you guys!

Telling FOH to set it flat is the best advice, but you have to be 100% sure what you are sending them is great. I used to do this all the time. I would tell them that I am doing everything for you and, once I got them to trust me for 5 minutes, they'd always they'd say something like "I wish every bass player would come in and I don't have to do anything to make it sound good." There was one time I told an eng. "Im doing everything for you. Set it flat and turn off the compressor" and he didn't turn off the compressor. During sound check I asked him if he turned it off he said he didn't but I wasn't hitting it. He was surprised that I could still feel it and hear it. I said "Dude, I told you to turn it off".
I forgot to mention that I was doing this playing pop country music.
I dunno... I worry about my rig and let the FOH engineer do the FOH engineering. But then I play dive bars where the FOH engineer is an employee of the venue and it's their PA.
If you weren't hitting it there's no way for you to have been hearing it
I run an EHX Bass Soul Food with the knobs at noon into a Bass Big Muff on the dry setting, volume at noon, tone all the way down, drive at 9 o'clock. It is absolutely massive!
I keep photos of all my settings stored in my phone, sorted to a folder so I can find them quickly.
Let me throw out Doug Pinnick from King’s X as one of the forerunners for modern bass tones. He famously split his signal into a bass amp and I high gain guitar amp back in the 80s. And was even down tuning to C back then and his tone is perfect for all kinds of genres. His Tech 21 all in one pedal is amazing for recording and live applications. Peace!!
Nolly is a better guitarist then most people let alone his bass playing, dude rips!
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I would actually pay for a Colin Marston interview/lesson. As far as extreme metal bass is concerned he is a master. At least look into his work with Gorguts.
His Pleiades Dust play through is amazing. Genius musician.
Good stuff. I enjoy a good modern tone, but at the same time sometimes I feel like something is missing to it. I really hem and hawd on Getty the Getty lee di or a dark glass. I went with the Getty Lee sans amp di.
I run a clean channel to a 12”sub, and just a sansamp into an ampeg 8x10, svt3 head. Ibanez sdgr 5 string. Mics and mix does the rest.
Can you please make video showing how to play, in my mind by the amazons?
Nolly dropping some damn great tips here.... thank you for this upload! I've had the plugin for a couple of years, like my boogie mark V amp... so many ways to tweek and get some good tones.. it is some work but thanks!!

Dang i wanna go record at that studio 🤯🤯
at the end is all about the player, a good musician will always find a way to get good sound with whatever is available, this applies to any profession, you can give the best fighter plane with all the best tech to a mediocre pilot, is the same for music, creativity is not just how you create music, but how you create your own system and sound
what? no one mentioned that using a pick is almost 50% of the variable in this presentation?
so when you play live are you able to get that exact same tome live ? if so how .youve added a lot of extra things on that software
You can save stuff into the pedal, it has a usb port
Not only about padel, also use pick 😎
I prefer Red Fang or Sleep bass tone
I want a pedal with two sides.., one is Modern Nolly the other with Vintage Scott.
Really wish there was more playing/examples in this video
I just recorded my bass for the first time last night. Against 2 distorted guitars in the mix, I went DI and it just didn't sound right. I added a distortion/overdrive to the bass track. At first it had the normal settings for guitar and it sounded awful. I turned the drive down and down and down until it was almost at the lowest setting. That's where is sounded best in the mix, just a little bit of distortion. Just there to punch in the lows. I also put a high pass filter on all guitars and the sound cleaned right up. Still needs some work though. The tone on one guitar just didn't match the song.
My whirlwind bass-distortion does an amazing job
i like my black nylon strings and im not 100% on using a pic but sweet vid!
Used to be a diehard funk tone bassists untill i digged about some justin c's bass tone on tools records, he basicaly does the same as nolly but in a more orthodox way, i love both ways tho, nollys way is cheaper, easier to replicate, and more modern
Ah. This is why I play those Rotosound Swing Bass strings. They hold that high end tone for a very noticeably longer time than other strings I've played.
I go for Rotosounds when I can get them too for the same reason! The stainless steel is really consistent. My fingers also react weirdly to other string materials too.
How long do they do they last before they go dead?
@@rjforbes4804 I'll use em for a month or two before I change them. Depends on how much the actually get used, of course. To me, they always seemed to hold their brightness for way longer than the DRs and D'adarios I've played.
@@rjforbes4804 I've found with the way I play they have a really even sound for about 3 months if I have fairly consistent gigs, sometimes they go longer. Keep in mind though that I don't really mind a duller sound and although I have a fairly light touch overall I am incredibly sweaty, so your mileage will vary.
@@doobiouscannibis have you tried the D'Addario NYXLs? I like the bright tone they have but I'm not sure which lasts longer roto vs. NYXL
Tone is so subjective, for example my favorite bass tone of all time is Exhumed’s bass tone on Slaughtercult, only way I can describe it is that it sounds ‘gurgle-y’.
But I’m sure most metal bands wouldn’t like that tone.
🤣🤣🤣
i wonder what scott use for his sound for his lessons
Scott's sound is DI'd from whichever head he is using (usually Vanderkley or Trickfish) doing directly into a Sound Devices MixPre-10
How am I supposed to tell the three of you apart?!
What I am concerned about is playing in a Rock/Metalband with two (or even more) guitars. Do I even want a distorted Bass or is it just to much?
You want at least some distortion to tune your mids and highs, especially in a rock setup you want the bass to sit with the guitars as well as having your lows sitting with the drummer.
You even more likely want distortion, Periphery has 3 guitarists, all with very distorted tones. Distortion helps blend the bass into the guitars, creating a unified big sound
@@lukebogartmix
That uNiFiEd bIg sOuNd means the bass is masked by the guitars. Have you ever heard Periphery live?

i mean Nolly is a legend but still
I have a tweeter horn on my bass amp, but I play with overdrive and keep it turned off and the treble rolled down and the high mids boosted, the low mids rolled down.

Nolly was talking about some basses that looses quickly the overtones of a note as soon as you hit the string even with fresh strings. What causes a bass to loose the overtones of a note over time?
Overtones carry less energy than the fundamental. Every note decays over time, but the fundamental is the one that is most energetic, so it rings for longer. Fresh strings produce stronger overtones, which makes them more energetic and thus makes them decay over a longer period of time.
@@static_motion Yes, I know. I was referring to some issues with the bass. I have a fender american deluxe and compared to other similar basses that I tested, it lacks a lot of sustain and overtones. And it doesn’t sound overall as good as it can.
@@OvyDynamic Ah right. That would be up to the woods that make up the instrument, the hardware (nut and bridge), and in the case of Dingwalls for example the longer scale in the low strings also helps with it.
@@OvyDynamic
From my experience, that lack of sustain and overtones is caused by too low string tension. The cheapest trick I've found to solve that issue is by using thicker strings with gradual increase of tension per strings, say the G string has 34 lbs of tension, so the D string should have 35.5 lbs, the A string should have 37 lbs, and so on. Lower strings requires higher tension than higher ones. You basically need to assemble your custom gauge set. Standard gauge sets are almost always, if not always, undertensioned. Looks like they were assembled by string manufacturers, not guitar or bass players.😅 Those extra pounds of tension will give you that 'zing' that will really help you cut through a dense mix.
The expensive trick is of course by purchasing a multiscale guitar/bass, like Nolly's.🤣
V sauce does bass videos now ?
Twinsies!
Guys, as a guitarist I'm not sure how I have to set the bass itself. Which pickup I have to use ? Neck or bridge, when I found something about that on internet, most of the time is 100% bridge. Is that the right way ?
Depends what you like. I like the EMG PJ set, but if you have a bass with soap bars, you can get the pj set in soapbar housings, or the CS neck pickup and DC bridge pickup which kind of sounds like a PJ on steroids. I think honestly the only time I prefer bridge only is in like C# which I don’t tune to very often
Depends on your bass, i use both on my jazz bass and it sounds splentastic
I like too use the back pickup with just a bit of the front blended in.
