When I was 13 I didn't have the money to go see Maiden live, so my friends and I went to a fortress wall outside the venue to watch them play. The only sound I could hear clearly was the monstrous clang of Steve's bass rig. A fond memory to this day
That's a wonderful memory! I was 13 when I got Live After Death on cassette tape. I wore it out on a Sony Walkman. We had one rock station, every night about 12am, they would play 2 Minutes to Midnight, I would wait every night for them to play, I was 13. I did not get to see them live until I was 19. Good times
Apparently, Michael Kenney who was Steve's bass tech and the band's keyboardist for 34 years retired after last year's tour. I'm glad I was able to hear him live before he called it a career.
Michael Kenney was the 6th member, wait, is that 7th? Which one was Martin Birch? He was always the 6th? Hehe. Either way, Michael was an important piece of the touring band.
Michael Kenney also played keyboards backstage for the band…and also onstage if they played Seventh Son. He definitely earned his retirement…Steve kept the man busy.
Awesome work Brent: Balancing all of that must be fun but demanding! Steve made me want to play bass - watching "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" from "Live After Death" when I was 12 years old 🙌
same too seeing a recoding of maiden england in 1992 when i was 11 made me want to play bass, wasn't able to get oen till iw as 13 though, and i've been playing now for 32 years. i own 3 basses currently (1995 US Fender P , 2015 Steve harris fender P , 2002 ESP-LTD Tom Arraya T-500 ) and i own 3 amps (Peavy 12" 150 watt , GK 400RB-III stach 2x10 and 1x15 cabs , and a Fender Rumble 500(i think) 15" ) over the course of 32 years i've owned more basses than that though ... first bass i owned was an old beat up peavy t-40 (sold i still kick myself in the ass over it too , that was a solid bass) , then i had some generic bass a friend gave me ,which i gave to some one else, i had a warlock platinum 2001 bass (sold) , a 1976 rickenbacker (sold after it started having issues as it just costed too much to get it worked on) and last but not least a cheap 1992 yamaha starter bass which i gave to a friend as payment for a favor.
Amazing to see that much of the rig has been toured for decades! Also amazing that Brent plays keyboards from his tech station. That's a lot of work before, during, and after the show!
They use a playback to open the show with the intro of Aces High or Caught Somewhere In Time so they can enter the stage running with fireworks. I would like to hear the live intro once.

Obrigado, Mr. Brent Diamond, por fazer o som do Master Harris soar tão incrível para nós!! UP The irons!! 🤘😁
There are a lot of missing pieces in this interview. I will try to explain as much as I understand: All the oldschool rack units (dbx, Aphex, 81 preamp etc.) are actually for Steve's onstage sound (for his hearing). So the Marshall cabs on stage are not actually miked. He says they send DI and Tech 21 signals to FOH. So the sound the audience hears may actually be a blend of these two: To elaborate a bit more, the FOH engineer applies a hi-cut filter to the DI signal to fill in the low-end and the Tech 21 gives Steve's characteristic ding ding tone. I don't understand what the Kemper is there for, though. Because he says he uses GK units as a backup rig. Thanks for the rundown!
Steve Harris = the greatest metal bassist of all-time!! Maiden = the greatest band of all-time!! Steve paved the way for all future metal bands from back then and still to this day. Love his lyrics, songwriting, and charisma on stage. Steve is life, and Maiden is life! UP THE IRONS!!! 🤘🤘🤘 P.S. Iron Maiden's gonna get you, no matter how far... !
My god, he still has that Peter Cornish switching unit. I remember seeing it in their Compass Point photos when they were recording Powerslave. You would think that electronic gear would burn by now.
It's insane that Steve has been using the same Bass for every recording and live show since the start. He was like this is my baby it works I ain't changing.
I bet Steve had the folks at Fender Custom Shop clone that Precision Bass neck for him down to the micrometer, there's no way he toured with the original neck that many years... The main thing he loves about that bass is the extremely heavy body and how the thing sounds.
Agree, sh-t happens on the road to risk that bass🤷♂️, think he mention that his original its use for recordings only, in the making of AMOLAD documentary🤔
image? Maiden has been the same forever and doesn't change for any image or anyone. He couldn't be running back and forth playing and taking care of Steve's bass sound if he wasn't back stage.

We play a few maiden numbers in our set and I use his preamp.pedal and it's really good at replicating his sound using a P bass with his massive flat wounds. Interested to know what you use the Kempers for?
Davey: "this guitar has well over 20 years, it's time to change it" Steve: "I bought this bass when I was 17 and I'm gonna use it untill the day I die"
I think he should get some time on stage, maybe during Hell On Earth, just to get some credit, because the fact he plays all those keyboard parts live every night as opposed to just activating backing tracks is amazing.
Steve’s previous tech, Michael Kenney, had a little time on stage during Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, but overall he was backstage too, and agree keyboards gives a dramatic atmosphere during those song
I have to be honest, Steve Harris is one of the most insane and yet simple bass players. I can play like this guy with one bass and one amp which it is super inspirational. Up the irons!
I'd be so thankful if they managed to produce one more. I'm sure they have it in them but as they aren't getting any younger I just hope things align for all of them to get it done.
I've never really thought much about Fender acoustic basses but if Steve Harris plays one that instantly makes them awesome. What songs does he use it on?
So I'm guessing Steve is tight fisted as hell? LOL just like my landlord also called Steve! I've always loved What Steve Harris has done with the bass in heavy metal, bringing it out of the shadows and giving himself some pretty tough riffs to keep the guitarists working overtime.

I was wondering where he went
Right, I had no idea that Michael Kenney retired either. Good to know he has a worthy replacement.
Michael Kenney was the 6th member, wait, is that 7th? Which one was Martin Birch? He was always the 6th? Hehe. Either way, Michael was an important piece of the touring band.
i didn't think this guy's name sounded familiar.
Michael Kenney also played keyboards backstage for the band…and also onstage if they played Seventh Son.
He definitely earned his retirement…Steve kept the man busy.
I love that Steve is such a creature of habit; he knows what he likes, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it! 😄 Thank you for this very neat video!
And if it is broke, pray that you have a backup. And a backup for that!
And if it is broke, never send a roadie to talk to Nicko while he's playing, it wouldn't end well

I'm extremally happy to see such a an oldschool rig. This is the tone that got me into the metal music 28years ago and it's still unchanged.

Steve's bass tone and rig is like the secret recipe of a well known brand. It works, and has always been successful, why ever change it?
Hey Oliver, your channel is one of the best bass channels on youtube.

I’ve been waiting to see a video on Steve’s rig, even though it’s fairly minimalistic you can’t go wrong with the classic setup
Always nice to see the people behind the scenes adding to the musical presentation. Up the ivories Brent!
