"hey VSauce, Michael here" *proceeds to shred bass* "now for some bass facts"
shit you beat me to it
Haha I checked before and was surprised no one else had done that
TheJunkieBox I can't believe he was in a Filthy Frank video recently...too hilarious
+Vaughn DuPont (Pelirrojo) Gotta get those spit facts
+Ericson Capone what would we do without em?
Four years later and this may still be the crispiest, heaviest, most balanced picked metal bass tone I've ever heard. Nolly is such a top-tier producer, and a hell of a musician as well.
The only thing coming close are his showcases of the Alpha Omega and ADAM pedal. Besides that there is nothing sounding even close
I've liked his Make Total Destroy playthrough tone more, imo
One of the best rock/metal engineers I've ever had the privilege of learning from, as well
Checking in at 7 years later. Still crisp
@@8Scientist maybe until yesterday when they released icarus lives bass playthrough
*Just wanted to point out that this is the most watched bass playthrough on RUclips.*
SiblingVlog For good reason! This is the pinnacle of metal bass tone.
Wait, how do you know that? How do you find that shit out?
Angiras Darbha Just listen to it my dude
It's hard to understand why because HE IS NOT THAT GOOD OF A BASSIST. HE JUST HAS ACCESS TO GOOD BASSES. GIVE ME THOSE DINGWALLS (I don't need a fucking pick I will slap these riffs) AND I WILL TAP, SLAP, or fingerstyle circles around him. All day.
Nolly isn't a good bassist, he is a great bassist. Serve the song! And his productions knock it out of the park.
Imagine animals as leaders with nolly's bass tone
I don't have a name he played on a few tracks on The joy of motion by AAL I believe
I was going to say that their tone is actually pretty sick too.
Listen to The Omnific, its. AAL but with 2 bass guitars and same amount of skill
@@above7793 Dude The Omnific is so sick!!!
well, it's like you imagine dragons as leaders....
Who is your favourite bass player and why is it Nolly?
cuz he got good
John Ro Myung
My favourite bass player is Nolly, because Nolly.
Oh, wait...
Because he crafted the greatest bass tone in modern metal
I hate to disagree, but mine has to be Nolly.
What a freakin' awesome tone. Sounds like he's play a 4 stringed bazooka.
Frank Black What a freakin' gorgeous bass I'm not jealous at all
He's playing drop A on a 4 strings, it always gonna sound beefy :P!
Gabriel Gauthier it's actually D# standard with the low D# tuned down to A
@@roykhau5777 *D standard
more like a 4 stringed inter continental ballistic missile.... :-)
I regularly come back to this just to hear this absolutely perfect tone
and go like wtf how do I sound like that lol
same
It's just turned up in the mix, but the tone is pretty standard. Hate to burst y'alls bubble
@@silkroad1201 I wouldn't say it's standard. It's a very particular plasticy brittle sound that's still got oomph. The rattle of the strings is something that I can never get sounding good. Probably because I have a bass with jazz in its name.

Most relatable comment I've ever read
oh fuck. move over elon musk, this comment sent my sides into low earth orbit with absolute ease
Somebody explain?
We need bass higher in mixes. Just saying. More Nolly pls.
Making bass higher in mix make metal sounds more brutal like in this video as example
mang kuruak lol ur such a brat
@rq irony
Make bass great again
Dawdy Drums i agree. It has that mean, angry, and powerful tone that needs to be heard.
I've seen this dude crush a bass line into absolute powder, seen him rock tappy virtuoso 6-string nonsense, and witnessed some incredible step-by-step videos on how you perform and produce drums.
Nolly Getgood is rapidly reaching the point where he has Gotgood and all of us, every musician, will be swept up in his wake.
He play 6 strings too
you know your band is phenomenal when you have one of the greatest guitar players in the world playing bass for you!
Look for Matt's playthrough on Thursday!
omfg yes
so much love!

Of this song?
+timothy recio yup, read the description.
this bass tone makes we want to switch to playing bass. ive never even considered that before
Do both!
@@mvyper I do both and it's great. Gives you so much freedom, not having to argue with a guitarist all the time about why playing something outside of the guitar part is good
That's the power of B A S S
I always played both, even though bass is my main instrument👍.
Guitar is cooler. But B A S S is more 𝐏 𝐎 𝐖 𝐄 𝐑 𝐅 𝐔 𝐋
It's very hard to Getgood at bass.
Nice!
No shit
Antriksh Tawra hahaaaaa
It’s easy to become barely competent, but unfortunately, like acoustic guitarists, bassists tend to stop there. I think we should all try to Getgood no matter what kind of instrument we play.

I ain't never seen nobody make music like that with a gosh dang fish before. That's one fine piece o' sea creature if I do say so m'self.
>bass
A musical instrument and a fish.
Those Dingwalls are badass
lmao
LOL
LOL
He's a killer bassist, monster guitarist, mastermind producer. I mean what the heck!? He's literally the bearded Saitama from metal
Not enough modern metal bands give enough detail to the bass. It really gives songs so much depth
I've always thought Nolly's bass playing gets overlooked by fans on some of Periphery's material. Guy is freaking great.
Misha said once that Nolly is also the best guitarist in the band :D
Nolly is overlooked as a band member tbh. He does so much instrumentally, and engineering of course.
He's like brain of Periphery.
True. I'm usually not a big fan of bass players in general.. but Nolly.. dayum.
He has one of the best bass tones in all of metal imo
Please do more of these. For older stuff too.
That would be awesome
i see you everywhere
Erik Tails I am your new God.
Especially The Way the News Goes, and Catch Fire. I love those two songs on this album
+Sam Schellhase my fav is Marigold
This video is proof that the idiots who berate bassists for playing with a pick couldn't be any less correct. People need to realise that music doesn't have any correct answers, and that this technique can sound AMAZING as it does here
But every real bass player can do just the same with fingers.
Alexey Polevoy there are some sounds you cant ger with fingers though

probably the best bass sound I have ever heard
Oh, this explains why Nolly hasn't been performing on the tour... he's been too busy making sick bass guitar covers for the RUclips.
Seriously, I saw them last night and that is bullshit. If I wanted to press play on a bass track I coulda stayed home.
Not sure why they didn't hire a touring player. You pay money to see the whole band play, not 5 of the 6 members with a bass track.
+Lurch “Murf” Murphy He wanted to stay home and focus on Producing. They didnt want to get a new Bass player because they don't want to ruin the chemistry between them.
+Chip Kanobe note to self: Periphery just nerfed their live shows. Thanks, Nolly! Their live show WAS one of their strongest points. Now it's a pack of tech nerd guitar wizards all plugged into a pre recorded bass track.
Honestly I don't like periphery but I love this bass player and Marc Holcomb, I could live with just watching them do you tube videos but ya staying home for production ? Like another band production not sure what that means
I never really got into Periphery but I remember the first time i saw this video thinking "hey this is pretty cool"
Then i went and saw Periphery live and they didn't have a fucking bassist and i was so disappointed
Saw them last week
No bassist. No Mark either.
Yeah cuz nolly stopped touring for reasons i guess🤷
Nolly quit to focus on his production career, as far as I know there wasn't any bad blood with the band so there's a positive :)
tetsky senpai Mark had family issues, they still put on a hell of a show regardless
@@tetskysenpai8538 Nolly quit the band but still writes, records, and produces for them. So basically, he just doesn't tour.

DAMNNNN BRO its too GOOD
yo is that THE Jackel Pun?!
You and Jackel need to do covers of this man! Or Habitual Line-Stepper is good too :D
you're one to talk lol
This dude is a robot.... so precise, walked out straight from West world.
He has impeccable time, but a lot of that precise sound is the heavy compression he uses.
@@iunnox666 His picking technique is fucking perfect as well
@@iunnox666 You can still say that his playing is fucking incredible cause compression doesn't change the timbre of uneven notes, only changes the gain
@@sueghdsifbvjvn Don't get me wrong, he's a great player, but the effects he uses would cover up a LOT, to the point where you can't tell how clean his technique is. Yes, uneven notes will have different timbre, but compression *does* mask it quite a bit, and that high gain distortion masks it even more. You could hit his strings just about any way and itll sound the same. His setup doesn't leave much room for any "tone from the fingers".
If every periphery's songs were mixed like this, other metal in general too, the world would be a much better place xD.
Killer bass tone !
No it wouldn’t he sucked the life out of the rest of the track to put the bass up front🤦♂️
Ive watched this video countless times over the years, probably the most enjoyable to watch and listen to bass riffs ever written, fucking masterpiece!

Because the vocals are gone on the playthrough thankfully
why dont they make the bass this loud in the actual songs
I was thinking the same thing, shit sounds immense
and considering Nolly produces it's probably his call on it.
Most Hi-Fi systems and headphones are fairly bass-heavy. Mixing is always a compromise, unfortunately.
Kind of hard to cut through the mix when you're playing with three guitarists! I agree the bass should be louder...
Because the mix wouldn't be as cohesive. Plus add vocals and there's even more competition for sonic space. I'm happy to hear it mixed this way on this playthrough alone. Album mix is fucking spot on as well.
I love these player only video instrumentals.. musician heaven!
The bass tone is incredible. Nolly's playing is fantastic!

Nolly's tone is perfect.
I can't get enough of listening. You always have something to learn by watching this video.
This never gets old. Ever.
Massive respect for Periphery every album just gets better
Honestly it's players like him that inspire me to want to learn bass. It's so much more than just your typical boomer, "just support the guitar playet". It's it's own thing and I love it. I love seeing bass players utilize big beautiful chords and different techniques than just picking and actually using effects.
Hey man you should definitely check out bass, but just know that just supporting the guitar play is what he doing here, it’s just a flashy riff. Not that that’s bad, but sometimes supporting the guitar player is what is best for the whole song. There’s plenty of moments in this song where he plays something simple to make everything else sound better
Would genuinely prefer it if the final album mix contained this amount of bass. Sounds amazing.
I can't get enough of this, just spectacular.
I keep coming back to enjoy this masterpiece.
Oh man that tone is heavenly!
I'm not a bass guy but fuck I love his tone and how deep it is

This is not usually my style of metal, but this is siiiiiiiick!
To date the best sounding bass i've heard. Literally thought about starting to play bass instead of guitar
the tone that comes out of this man is insane
That's a pretty NOLLY bass tone you have there, sir.
Best picked Bass sound i have ever heard! I know Nolly has done a awesome drum sample library recently but he should definitely look into translating this bass sound beyond hardware (like sampling drums) -maybe looking into Bass focused DAW plugins next, as he obviously has the ear for this market. A very small market that is rapidly growing.
The tone and set up is 🔥
Once perfection is achieved, there's no where else to go. This is the pinnacle folks.
