I chose this song because I’ve been dealing with a lot of pain and hurt so I wanted to hear something that was related to my situation

I saw NIN and Trent on Tuesday, and got to experience this song live. People love to say that Johnny Cash did it better and that it is now Johnny's song, but I just don't feel that way. Trent wrote it about his own experiences, and it will always be Trent's song. I like and appreciate Johnny's version, which is beautiful and heartfelt, but I will always prefer Trent's voice. All people are entitled to their opinions, obviously. And no one's is more right, except maybe Trent's.

Both songs are perfection. The idea anyone's stupid enough to even bother comparing the two is disgusting. Perhaps, as stand-alone songs, Johnny Cash's version is more thematically identifiable with a wider audience, as most people are understanding of the plights of growing old and the sadness that comes with it. But on the other hand, if you've experienced hard-hitting depression, nothing speaks to you so personally as Trent Reznor's version, there's very little else like it. It's also utterly unfair to compare them side-by-side when Hurt belongs to a concept album, and is considered one of the best closing songs to an album in modern music.

I LOVE this song and love NIN. That said, this is a great cover to the Johnny Cash version. I know this came out first but Johnny slayed it! Made it his! Trent wouldn't disagree either

Back in the mid nineties, to the first years of the 00'S everyone assumed Reznor was not going to live a long life. He abused himself terribly. It seemed like he had nothing in his life but music and put everything he had into it and it seemed so miserable at the time.
I would check out the 2017 Panorama Festival rendition of it. Reznor at 52 years old, with a wife and children and some measure of normalcy now. His performances of Hurt is now recalling some of that Johnny Cash feeling. The hurt has subsided and it's become something of an expression of melancholy elation that he survived. Especially chilling is when at the point of the song where he sings "I am still right here", a fan screams back through the silence of the crowd "Yeah, you are!" All the feels right there.
The Downward Spiral is a must to listen to in it's entirety. It''s a psychodrama of a journey leading up to Hurt. It's why Cash fans will never understand the appeal of the original. Hurt is a conclusion to a story. Not a song in itself.
If you just want some songs to feel loss to I would say here are some Reznor songs I grieved to in the past :
Something I Can Never Have (Still)
    Find My Way
The Day The World Went Away
I'm Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally
    In This Twilight
    Zero Sum
    Lights In The Sky
    A Minute To Breathe
    The Way Out Is Through
My sympathies, and I hope everything gets to a state of better soon.

One of the reasons this song is timeless and considered one of the greatest songs ever written is because EVERYONE feels this hurt at some point. A feeling of worthlessness, emptiness and wanting to give up. Trent felt this when writing this song. It basically started as a journal entry for him.
He didn’t care about it being a “hit” he just had this raw emotion he needed to get out.
This song always helped me remember I am not the only one feeling how I feel. You are not either. We all struggle and need to find support in other people, music, the fight, or wherever you can find it.

I think people who suffer more on the inside will always be partial to Trent's version. His version comes from a place that is darker and scarier. But there is hope. They hear it and the song just speaks to them. Cash's version is beautiful in itself but his version is about a life lived, mistakes, regrets, joy, and the end of life. It's ok to appreciate both versions!

James, cheer up brother. That is what life is all about, how we react to pain and hurt. The better we react to it, the stronger we become. And when we have God in our corner, nothing can keep us down and there is no ass we can't kick. Use your pain and grow from it. Peace my brother.

Life is very hard. Many have been through some really dark times. Myself included. I've survived through a lot of trials throughout my life, and gained some wisdom from it. Other things still weigh on me daily, like mortality. Not that I fear death, but that there's so much I want to do, but I don't have the means or time to do it all, leaving me in a gridlock where I do almost nothing instead.
Don't quit RUclips. Do it because you want to. Because you enjoy it. Bare your soul to your audience, and people will keep coming back. It takes courage to put your personal feelings out there for all to see.
One song that helped me a lot was Metallica's Fade to Black.
Anyways, stay strong, and that includes allowing yourself to be weak on occasion. Embrace the dark times, and remember them, because when you get to a place where you'll feel better, surviving the dark times will make you feel invincible.

been a nin fan for manny years. this is probably one of the deepest modern day songs. yet it works like an oldie. short lyrics with big stories. on this journy ive come to like your chanel very much. ive had reactions like this the first time i heard this song. i think it transmits stronger on the live version. on a more personal note i have also felt burried in despair. i used to go to church when i was younger but only out of tradition. i lived with hederitary depression for manny years triggered by heavy stuff and pain in life. tried therapy, alcohol, pills but nothing helped me live in calm. i know some folks wont agree with where this is going and i respect that. people react differently in life to similar things and as you said if you have something to say say it with care. well, the day i felt that i couldnt go on i prayed and put my life in Gods hands and looked for his guigance. up to today it has been the best thing ive ever done. i live with hope and calm besides the pain that life strikes. it has been awsome in my life and i just wanted to share that. hope and pray you stay strong. ps. asome vid on the sound of silence

I'm so sorry to hear things are rough for you right now. But I think most of us feel a closeness to you because you turn to music to help you cope. Isn't it funny how when we're down, we listen to sad songs and they somehow make us feel a little better? Reaction vids are a totally new genre to me, but I really enjoy experiencing others experiencing something for the first time - especially when it seems to mean as much to them as it means to me. Welcome back, stay strong, and please keep in mind that your fans here are all on your side, and we love what you do.

Hi thank you soooo much for being truthful when you reviewed this song you didn't need to be but thankfully you did this song got me through my painful teen years dealing with sever physical, sexual, and emotional abuse most people hide their sorrows so it makes others feel alone in their struggles but EVERYONE goes throw pain the few who are blessed enough to ever feel happiness need to know how lucky they are thank you for speaking the truth it means so much... P.S. my wife almost drown today she was washed down a river firefighters pulled her from the water after 25 minutes she is recovering now but I am shattered I was asking God "why do I need to constantly rise above?" You reminded me that life is a fight and it's okay to feel lost at times all alone but that doesn't mean cruelty wins your words just means everything to me right now keep it up speak your truth it's helping more then you know

I feel you man. I know it’s been a while and I really really hope you’re doing better by now but i will tell you what I had to tell myself when I went through my hardest times: you will be ok. You will make it through. There’s no other choice but to keep going. Ive survived devastating heartbreak, loss of loved ones in every way, I’m currently recovering from a broken spine when a guy hit me on my motorcycle but I refuse to let it stop me. My hands are numb from the cold as I sit in my garage working on an old piano I’m restoring so that like myself it will once again look and sound as good as it ever has. Just gotta get out there give yer balls a tug and go kick life’s ass. It’s yours. Own it like it’s yours. You are not alone my friend.

I know the pain, I fast forward through the subscribe thing most guys give. Within 3 words, I knew you were hurting. To other people too, always know there are people out there. They want to listen. Silence is depression's weapon. There is nothing wrong with seeking help. These people that judge you. They are happy because they are blind and numb. I'm sorry man, I hope you found a friend ready to listen, or a councilor. This disease will literally kill you. Talking is depression's kryptonite. I am blessed with a beautiful friend. Life is hard. My first time seeing you on this and I wish the best. EDIT: also, I don't know where you are but if you're near and I'm out to hang I'll let you know. His NIN Pretty Hate Machine is something to listen to. BTW he made that all by himself, instrumentation, etc. Glad you're back even though this is the first viewing. Good luck to things.

We're here with you. Some of us (probably most of us?) have been through the darkest times. Remember, this too shall pass.
I love Nine in Nail's original, but wow, when Johnny Cash sang it at the end of his life, my husband and I cried and still do when we listen to it.

I dig your stuff man and sorry that you've been blue, I get the same way many times. NIN , while often times good sonic therapy can definitely bring out the darker emotions when one is feeling down. Maybe something uplifting like Hatebreed if you wanna hear some hardcore metal. Often times works for me when I feel horribly depressed. Also, don't overlook the last lyric of Hurt... "I will find a way", It's always made the song positive to me.

Jam to korn first album and issues follow the leader and untouchables most importantly thoses albums helped me feel less alone. Beware of the downward spiral it’s really dark also I love the downward spiral but I feel like the more I listen to it the more my mind goes missing. :o enjoy this amazing music. Music can help us feel less lonely because music can show us we can relate the fore we are not entirely alone. :)
