Always great to have a brake review by a rider that actually has some weight. At 230 lbs, I like to know how a brake may stop me as opposed to a 150 lb rider.

Finally someone who tests brakes and weighs more than 160lbs. As a 240lbs rider I need to know what works and what doesn’t I rode code rsc 220/220 hs2’s and galfer pro pads just to stop happily. Then I tried 220/220 on Shimano 4 pots and it changed the way I ride. I brake later and harder the brakes don’t overheat and work like they should. I ran magura mt5s for a bit but the seals in the caliper kept blowing. 😂 otherwise I love my Shimano brakes.

Be interesting to see how they are for fatigue on long DH or bike park laps.
Is there a hefty weight penalty being aimed at e-bikes?

Bad Urach (the location) is actual known for very tight corners on the trail. Here pivot turns with a lifted backwheel are a most do technique. From the video it seems that the brake hasn't been tested for this manover technique... any feedback how the brake behaves here would be great, thanks !!!

Hooray, brakes that match potential high e-mtb system weights!
MTB or on an e-MTB with a total system weight around 280 lbs/127 kg? Pick your components thoughtfully. My ride is a 2023 Orbea Rise M-10, and I’m about 20 lbs under that bikes' limit of 304 lbs/138 kg. I should carry less crap with me. 😁
I like my Magura MT7-Pro, long DH levers, P.8 pads, paired with SRAM 200mm HS2 6-bolt 2.0mm rotors. After a year the rotors are still within spec and I’ve only had to bleed the levers a few times to keep everything feeling like new. The P.8 pads are a good match for the SRAM rotor hardness. I no longer have a need for sintered pads as I usually would on other systems (TRP & Shimano). I never liked SRAM levers because of the feel.
If the SRAM rotors do get a little bent, they’re easy to straighten out. The MT7 lever clamps also don't need to be immovably tight to be flex free. So, when crashes occur the lever will rotate on the bar instead of getting mangled (old Moto-X setup technique ).
Gustav Pro vs Maven? Endurance or outright power?
It is not possible to be over-braked where I live.
The MT7 Pro is awesome but do the Gustav Pro also suggest more e-integration? Oh, please don't believe ABS is a winning idea.
    Happy riding!

Can you pull the quick link brake lines through those integrated headset cable routings? Also, I read that those quick links will be available for mt5/mt7 brakes, but will they also be able to to be pulled through those integrated headset cable routings?

I've owned 2 Magura Vyron V2 droppers, 1 Vyron v3 dropper and a set of MT Trail brakes. My 1st v2 dropper lasted less than 8 months before being replaced under warranty by Magura. That replacement is still on a bike I ride once a month but I have to remove it and pump it back to 218psi before each ride because it loses all pressure between rides. The MT Trail brakeset was the worst brakeset I have ever tried. Noisy, rotor rub, flexy levers and less power than a Deore 6100 2 piston brake -and by a lot. The v3 Vyron? There was so much left to right wiggle & play in the saddle that I couldn't stand the racket it made when descending and I was told by Magura that they wouldn't warranty it because "I'm in the USA and they don't officially market it here".... I think I'll pass on the Gustav.

Mt5s were annoying for me, but the power and consistency were standout. The MT7s have rub, noisy, rattling levers until you zip tie them, but they have been consistent and dependable for years.
I don’t think I would be brave enough to try their dropper post though, especially now where there are so many good affordable options.

The Gustav won't be more powerful than the MT7 and the MT7 already sits at the bottom of list of highend mtb brakes in terms of total ratio(hydraulic * mechanical advantage). They basically made everything bigger in the Gustav, bigger pistons, bigger thicker pads, thicker rotors. This results in less frequent pad changes and would give you more power, but they also scaled up the BMC, which brings the power back down. Not a bad brake, really like the messfree caliper bleed port, but it's not a brake for everyone.

    • @Riley880

so if you already have mt7s your better off just getting new pads instead of upgrading the whole set. I have The 7s on a transition repeater.

Wait what? Magura is literally one of the most powerful brakes on the market, complain about eanything else, but power is not something they family at.
MT7 have specifically pads that sit very close to the rotor for the sake of low free stroke, MT5s are much more manageable in that regard.
