  • You might be wondering if the Rode Wireless Pro can be used alongside other timecode systems, to expand its timecode feature to even more cameras on your film set. And it turns out, it’s not a straightforward yes or no. Your mileage may vary depending on the equipment you’re using, and how you have it set up, but in some cases, you can jam sync another timecode system using the Wireless Pro as the master. Stay tuned to hear the good and the bad about my findings when using the Wireless Pro to jam sync the Deity TC-1.

    4:31 In this video, I was running V1.1.9, and Rode Central did not show any new firmware updates until the Rode Central app itself was updated
    4:41 So make sure you are running the latest version of the Rode Central app, and then check again for firmware updates
    5:17 My theory was correct, and I tested this afterwards by passing the Rode's output through an amplifier
    5:23 As soon as I fed it through an amplifier, the TC-1 detected the signal no problem. (Rode was running V1.1.9)
    5:28 Once I updated to 1.2.3, it worked fine WITHOUT needing the amplifier

      So just wanted to confirm with you, by "this issue" you mean they fixed the issue with the audio levels being too low to be recognized by the TC-1? So you are now successfully able to sync the TC-1 with the Rode Wireless Pro? This will make a difference on whether I purchase the Rode or not, since timecode is vital to my workflow! TIA

    I had the same problem initially while attempting to jam-sync my Zoom F6 with the Rode Wireless Pro. The F6 was simply not detecting a timecode signal. However, when I changed the Timecode Mode to "Timecode 5" and set the "Manual" Output Gain to 0db using the Rode Central app on my iPhone, it worked perfectly.

      I simply boosted the signal with a handheld recorder. It is clear the tc. Level is simply too low for some devices. F6 and ultrasync both picked up the time code no probs. Just simply boost the tc level. Simples!

      Confirming this works. Thanks, Chris. I had considered adding an amp into the chain, but never thought to use something like one of my Tascam pocket recorders to just boost the signal. This should therefore absolutely be fixable by Rode as surely all they need to do is boost the default LTC output dB. Thanks for the heads up!@@crisfells3981 Edit: This workaround seems to add around 1-2 frames of latency, from what I can see when using the DR-10L Pro pocket recorder to boost the Rode's output.

    It makes a whole lot of sense to be able to jam-sync the RODE Wireless Pro to an external timecode source as well. I'm surprised this isn't supported. In my current workflow, I sync my TC-1s to my MixPre II where the MixPre II is the heartbeat of my setup. I would prefer to jam-sync the RODE receiver to the MixPre II - that makes more sense to me from a workflow perspective.
    Btw - Anyone know what the latency is for the RODE Wireless Pro?

  • @OrtizFilms
    @OrtizFilms 9 месяцев назад +4

    Rode needs to see this. The Rode unit should at least be able to send output without any problem. Another proves it's too early to call Rode unites Pro timecode. But the most crucial part is Rode letting their units receive timecodes and not only be a master. That will open more sales for them. I heard Deity is about to announce something soon and might have us waiting to buy this. I still have one Rode Pro for a single-camera interview shot.

    I'm running into the same issue. But what if we use the phone apps accordingly to set both systems to time of day? The Rode defaults to time of day. And the Deity app allows for a 'time of day" sync off the phone... Would that result in an accurate sync? You'd basically be syncing both systems off time of day from phone. I'll be testing this tomorrow.

    • @joeunsworth
      @joeunsworth  8 месяцев назад +1

      With this approach, you have to keep in mind that the whole point of timecode is that everything is FRAME accurate. If you rely on setting time of day via apps/computer clocks, you'll most likely not have the two systems accurate to within a frame of each other. You'd need to nudge everything in post. I would be curious to know how you get on, however, so please do report back after you've tested it!
      Have you updated your Rode Wireless Pro to the latest firmware? The issues I reported in this video have been fixed in Firmware 1.2.3 on the Wireless Pro. You need to update your Rode Central App before you'll be able to install the newest firmware on your kit.
      Also check that your TC-1s are running the latest firmware, too. You can download this from the Deity website and install it on your TC-1s via a USB thumb drive and a USB-C adapter.

      @@joeunsworth Firmware updates aside, I figured out how to successfully jam the Rode Receiver's timecode into my Deity TC-1 Master. It all now functions as advertised for me. There seems to be a learning curve with the RODE apps GUI. The toggle switches seem to serve no function... to select the proper mode, you have to press on the header text of the TC mode, rather than the "toggle switch." Rode needs a GUI update. End of day though, it works!!!

But I guess since Rode was first out the gate… Anyway, I wouldn’t confuse the two even if your use case is the same with either product. In terms of functions, the Theos kit is more that double the price with a lot more on offer Vs the Rode, that may or may not be in your favor.

      Yep, this is why I’m wondering (and overlaid some graphics in the video) to query whether it would be fixed by a firmware update on Rode’s side, or on Deity’s side. It could be either - the WiPro is definitely sending the TC out of the headphone jack, I hear it loud and clear in my headphones. But it’s not as loud as what comes out of the Deity port through the same headphones - I could be way off the mark, but my guess is on a line/mic level issue at this point.

    Quick question for everyone concerned about TC sync. Why does TC sync matter these days? I've been a professional editor for over 20 years. 20 years ago it definitely mattered but today if you're editing in say Adobe Premiere it automatically syncs for you. Gone are the days of manually lining up tracks and hoping. Am I missing something? I've got the tentacle sync e and it won't sync with my a7s III but it takes me maybe two minutes to get everything fully synced in my timeline when I start an edit. I'm sincerely interested in knowing what the big deal is. The only thing I can think is if your camera is too far from the subject to pick up a reference audio to sync with inside Premiere. I personally don't run into that too often and it can be quickly solved with a clap.

    • @joeunsworth
      @joeunsworth  8 месяцев назад +3

      Syncing in Adobe certainly isn't automatic, you still need to drag clips more-or-less into the right place on your timeline, select, right click, sync audio, it's a tedious process for me when a shoot could have over 100+ takes per day. That's before considering multi-cam coverage of events where there are different cameras and recorders in different locations, but you still need a chronological edit or the ability to line up all the cams in post - festivals, weddings, conferences etc where you might not have easily-syncable reference audio. Sure, maybe you could get by relying on internal camera clocks, but then that's one more thing to have to worry about setting in all the crew's cameras. When I make my notes during production, they're based on the timecode synced to an iPad app; this then saves so much time when working with remote editors, because they wouldn't know where "that perfect take" happened, as they weren't on-set - so my notes will include all the timecode references that are accurate down to the nearest second or so. Those are the main things I like about working with TC personally, but just for syncing tracks up in post, sure, that can be done manually if you want to take a bit more time to do so and the team on production followed process and set everything up properly to make your life as easy as possible in post.

      @@joeunsworth All fair and good points. I guess when I say automatic I'm comparing it what I was doing 20 years ago which was the furthest from automatic as you could get. It was painful, so the current options seem like Heaven. With that said you make valid points about multi-cam shoots, especially of the magnitude you're talking about. Most of my shoots are talking heads with 1 or 2 cameras and then I rarely use the audio from any b-roll I'm shooting and the order of the footage doesn't really play a role outside of recalling in my own head when I got a shot. So obviously we're talking two different beasts here. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it.

    Receiver is lacking headphone port. Funny that Rode includes timecode connection for the camera but there is no way to monitor the audio during use of the timecode, camera operator will just have to wait for the playback, since timecode is already a lot of convenience better not include too much or it might make sense.

    • @joeunsworth
      @joeunsworth  8 месяцев назад +2

      You should be able to monitor audio from your camera's headphone jack. If your camera doesn't support changing the audio output settings (i.e. only output the left channel to headphones), then you can get around this by using a stereo breakout cable. You connect your headphones to one channel of the breakout cable, and then you'll only hear the mixed audio from the transmitters, without the timecode audio deafening you. It's not ideal, but it works.

    TC could be simple if it was implemented via BlueTooth (Blue UltraSynch) if a standard protocol was agreed on and implemented in mics (TASCAM DR-10 Pro). No cables, extra dedicated TC modules, hold your mouth right etc. The huge potential market of creators are not aware of the new possibilities and so the demand is low. The current state of Time Code tech is so contorted that those that attempt it are severely punished for their effort. The confusion here is yet another testimony to this miserable state. It is really and eye opener to use the UltraSync Blue time code master to link time code to a number of TASCAM DR-10L Pro 32 bit float solid state recorders and multiple iPhones running Filmic Pro. No cables and adapters, just the Bluetooth link to the recorders and iPhones from the UltraSync Blue module. Collect the media files and one click in your favorite editor and things are synched. No hassles and help from your 4th grade teacher required. It could be simple for everything but the market is currently unaware.

If you have the transmitter set to "Always" record mode, and you power on the transmitter for 7 hours, then you would indeed have 7 hours of audio files. I have noticed that after every 60 minutes, it splits the recording into a new file. So if you recorded for 7 hours straight, you should have 7 files each one hour long. If you are using the other record mode, you would only have recordings for the time periods where you pushed the record button, either on the transmitter directly, or on the receiver (you can configure it such that the Rode button on the receiver starts/stops recordings). @@jasbirsanyal
