    This is not a step by step process of replacing the head gasket and in the video, I did not replace the gasket for real / it was made to illustrate what you can do and what to expect so you will be prepared in case you wanna do this service for real.
    There are a lot of things to consider when replacing the head gasket on an engine; First, you have to analyze and see how difficult it might be, what parts you will need to replace (gaskets, chain tensioners, water pump ... ) and if you have all the tools required for such service. Then you will need the knowledge/experience which you can get by watching others doing it and then practice yourself.

      There is no need to cut the chain. You can loosen Just the sprockets from the camshaft.
      In order to keep the chain on the sprockets, you can use tie wraps.
      You Will be needingvthe timing tool afterwards

    I learned recently that not all overheating is necessarily a head gasket failure. It's quite common for the nozzle on top of the water pump that circulates water around the throttle body to become blocked. It's only a 3mm bore. To test this, carefully remove the hose from the top of the pump and start the engine, if you don’t see a high jet of water then you have a problem. On most pumps you can unwind this nozzle with a 12mm or 13mm deep socket. Check it's condition and if necessary run a 3mm drill through it to clean. Take this opportunity to check and flush the whole system, including the throttle body and replace with correct antifreeze and distilled water. Hope that cures it as it did for me.

    Maybe I missed it but I didn't see you unbolt the timing chain tensioner from the head. I watched lifting of the head stage and the timing chain tensioner appeared to have been previously removed from the head. So clearly the process of lifting off the head with the tensioner attached is not straight forward as you demonstrate. Also no information on how to compress the tensioner for before head replacement. I suspect that there is more to this than demonstrated.

    Hello, great video ! I'd be very interested to watch how you actually use the grinder to cut the head of the chain pin with the tool. For, it is not actuallyshown in this video. Could you please put a video online that shows precisely how you use that grinder (have you filmed it ?) ? That would be much helpful..
    Also, I wonder: do you have such a chain reassembled on your own car ?
    I must do the head gasket on my Corsa and having seen this, I'm now hesitating about which method to go for…
    Thanks again I hope you'll put the grinder video online ;-)

However I realized i dont have the valve compressing tool so I end up puting in the video what I could . hi, how did you retract the timing chain tensioner?

    • @ButtonBrand
      @ButtonBrand 7 месяцев назад

      Very good question and how did it miraculously remove itself from the head before you showed lifting the head off?.. Oh I know: you edited out the struggling and swearing stage whilst head off with the - removed the tensioner from the head, placed the head back in position then re-filmed lifting it off.😁

    • @donnagrimshaw3512
      @donnagrimshaw3512 7 месяцев назад

      @@ButtonBrand the tensioner is retracted by loosening the sprocket bolt and then pulling up on the timing chain to retract it most of the way, then you can move it the last tiny bit from the top by pushing on the plastic guide with the end of a screw driver. Then you can put the pin in the hole on the side (which is covered by a bolt). The Haynes manual says to do it by turning the intake cam with a spanner but I have discovered that if you do it that way then you will bend a couple of valves.

      Indeed it depends on where you live.
      For example, today I went my Astra G 1.4 16v (X14XE) to the mechanic for almost the same reason. I'm sure that the previous owner was filling the cooling system with simple water and not anti-freezing coolant. So rust was created and starting "eating" metal from the inside. The first "victims" were the block freezer caps. And then the head gasket.
      Besides that, the previous owner hadn't replaced the timing belt for a loooong time. Only the altenator-A/C belt.
      In conclusion:
      1) freezer caps
      2) timing belt
      3) water pump
      4) water hose (the one under the intake manifold)
      5) head gasket
      6) machining workshop (for the cylinder head)
      7) some miscaleneous works (aside of this job)
      8) mechanic's fee and workhours
      About €500
      Greetings from Athens, Greece!
