    Mate, thank you very much! I’ve never wrenched on a car this ‘deep’, and when i got the chance to buy a Corsa B (which has almost identical engines) with a blown headgasket, i could not resist. Without your video, i wouldn’t have succeeded in the smallest bit. Cheers mate!

    What a top geezer! Reminds me of my dad and his friend who i spent many many hours with as a kid, watching and learning while trying to lend a hand. No convenient edits, shows the job as it is without a fully equipped garage, putting up with the weather and overcoming the awkward obstacles faced by a DIY mechanic working on his driveway. Respect to you sir!!

    Watching the problems you had helps to avoid traps. I will add a few things I found myself. I found that the timing chain could come off once the tensioners were removed without removing the cam sprockets. I did not want to remove the one that had the cam angle sensor. Also I looked for markings on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets and counted the number of chain links between each rather than trying to get top dead centre. Also workshop manuals tell you to do things that are not correct. The manual said the engine had to be lowered out. I lifted mine out upwards. I lifted it upwards till the sump could clear the frame. Then I put a bar across under the gearbox to support the gearbox at that position. This support bar was tied to the car frame. Then I disconnected the gearbox and left the box in the car. The engine came out with room to spare even with the inlet and exhaust manifolds attached. When I put the engine back in I got 2 bolts and cut the heads off and put a screwdriver slot in the end and screwed them into the engine so they would line up with the gearbox. The bolts were about 2 inches long plus a bit of thread. Also I filed a v shape on the clutch plate hub leading edge to guide the gearbox shaft in.

    For the peice of that kit i always think its worth having a go at doing it yourself, in most cases your car's already written off with head gasket being gone so you're not exactly going to make it worse

    Thanks very much Martin. Your excellent video showing your patience and expertise. 40 odd minutes has persuaded me not to attempt this 3 day job, with all the possible pitfalls of rounded nuts, needing heat, or bolts shearing etc.
    My Corsa has an excellent body but No Compression on cylinder 4, so may do this job and discover it's a deeper problem in the block (piston/ring). What a shame, not economically viable, so off to the scrappie methinks :)

It's still on the road according to the MOT website. only thing that annoyed me about it is that there's a metal bar under the seat base foam that used to dig into my right leg. That strip down all went fairly well,no seized bolt etc.. Jimmy owes you big time now Martin. You will have blame Jimmy's driving style for the blown head gasket.

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  7 лет назад

      I think it is down to poor maintenance throughout it's life Nick. No coolant solution corrodes these engines and poor oil changes. Jimmy doesn't thrash about so I know it's not his driving style.

    • @nick2203
      @nick2203 7 лет назад

      Yes lack of proper maintenance is the problem. My daughter had a Corsa as her first car. The timing chain rattled on that,plus a couple of minor issues and all due to lack of maintenance.
      Like Jimmy she didn't thrash it around but it ended up an insurance write off..It was a fairly minor collision and not her fault, although the other "experienced mature driver" did try and blame her. Fortunately she was able to prove he was at fault.

    Sometimes the milky oil on the oil refill cap can be from condensation :)) Best thing to do is
    buy a test kit and look out for the white smoke you cant miss it, Dont forget the head gasket can
    also leak from the exhaust part of the system.

    The one use, torque to yield, head bolts were said to be designed to give the best clamping action on the head. There is no shortage of blown head gaskets to show that there are still problems. And the added cost of the bolts can make it not worth fixing the engine.

  • @Parknest
    @Parknest 7 лет назад +1

    The best way to check the head for warping is with a steel ruler or a similar sort of straight edge. Don't forget to change the oil filter after you've changed the engine oil. I've just finished the service video on the Corsa C that I've been working on.

      The car was running rough and after checking a few things, we noticed the plugs were oiled up and we then checked the oil cap and found the tell tale sign of mayonnaise in the filler cap. We then noticed the water level and topped it up only to find it lost coolant again so adding all these things up pointed to the head gasket.

      but how and why did the head gasket fail without any overheating, I see it was corroded but is it normal for a head gasket to fail through corrosion and how can one prevent a hg from corrosion ? thanks

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  7 лет назад

      It didn't overheat because we caught it straight away. Keep the proper coolant in the system all the time to prevent internal corrosion.

      Poor maintenance on any car will cause these issues. It needs proper coolant which protects the engine and stops corrosion like this has suffered.

    more common on these is the timing chain cover leaks water into the oil and has the same symptoms of a head gasket. the timing chain gets changed with the head gasket to it gets remedied anyway

    Great video Martin,those head gaskets don't look very good quality.Was the car overheating before you stripped it Martin? or been run hot ? might be an idea just have the head checked to sure it's not warped.Look forward to the next video on the Corsa !
    Cheers, Jeff.

      No jeff, no overheating, we caught it before it overheated. Gasket was very corroded. I will check the head though.

      I think it's wise to as you have it stripped down if you are keeping the car.

    hello mate im sorry to bother you i got a question if you dont mind i got a 1.0 corsa c my water pump was leaking so it over heated the engine rattled then conked out i got a error code for bad egr valve so i cleaned it but had drained my battery so charged it but when i put it back on and tried it never started so i shut the bonnet not realising the live terminal touched the bonnet and it was 3 hours before i realised and when i did the terminal was welded to the bonnet is there a chance that its not done anything bad in regards to the terminal touching or would it have definitely caused a problem would really appreciate any advice

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  7 лет назад

      I think that's what caused the head gasket failure on this one too. Poor maintenance throughout it's life.
