Great work. The garage charged me nigh on £300 to fit a replacement alternator [not new] as I was getting a whining noise from the auxilliary side the engine after they suggested it might be the alternator bearings...which it wasn't. so I decided to replace the air con compressor, water pump and tensioner myself...the noise didn't go away. Whilst doing all this I noticed the crankshaft pulley was vibrating and soon discovered to my dismay it was coming from the crankshaft mains. Replaced the mains and connecting rod big end shells from underneath the car...what a job! Now in the business putting all the crankcase and a new oil pump and fittings back. Your video was a great help in all of this, thank you. All of this because I ignored the oil pressure warning light believing the switch was faulty. Ah well, still learning at seventy four! Just subscribed.

Wow, this is phenomenal, I didn't realize how much work and labour time goes into doing such work. When my mechanic told me it would cost a few hundred for a new timing change because its an awkward job - he wasn't kidding! How do you remember where everything goes back after dismantling? Top job, we'll impressed 👍

Nice tutorial, my son has jus got his first car & decided on a 2008 corsa D 1.2 sxi, it aint without its faults but for its age its engine sounds spot on, its had a chain kit replacement not so long ago but it needs the valve cover gasket replacing , so gona sort the oil service out for him while i do the gasket aswell & thought ill give the cooling system a refresh aswell .
For his first car its ok bodywork wise few scratches n bit of rust etc so id rather him have that than a brand spankin new motor while he gets used to the uk roads & looney drivers lol.
So now i know how im gona tackle the jobs at hand thanks to this vid .

@@Glenn7719 Hello, I've watched your video as I've changed the head gasket and put new chain and water pump on, i did everything that you have done, ( great job by the way ) After fitting everything put oil and water in, started the car it fired up and there was a hell of a whining noise and then a clonk and the engine stopped dead, so I've stripped it back down to see if there is any damage, and all seems ok, have you got any ideas what can have happened, i noticed that when i put the timing back to top dead, the near camshaft was not lined up with the locking tool, it was in line when i first did it, would that make it stop, also I put new hydraulic lifters in, should i have adjusted them somehow, if you have any ideas it would be much appreciated thanks rick

    • @MiracleMitch
      @MiracleMitch 2 года назад +1

@@ricksivyer7427 You may have already solved the issue by now but if not, should the timing not be set now it may have jumped on start up. Usual causes are cam sprocket not torqued correctly (or not tight enough) or pin not removed from tensioner and timing chain skips a tooth or two instantly. Also possible that when torquing the bolts the camshaft moved slightly putting the timing out of alignment once more. Did you check it by rotating the engine by hand a full timing cycle to see if the timing tools realigned again. If not the clonk might be piston against valve, damage you won't see unless the head is removed. It would explain your symptoms.
Having replaced hydraulic lifters which need no adjustment, in addition to rotating the engine by hand to recheck the timing (I rotate twice, check it, rotate twice again and check it again) it also serves to move the oil into the oil circuit, you can disconnect the coil pack and remove the fuel pump fuse / relay so that you circulate the oil and build oil pressure under a no start cranking situation. After a few seconds cranking, plug them back in and then start the engine for real when it has oil circulated to most parts.

  • @jaroslawziober3130

Some important facts to add. Camshaft sprockets prelock only 10Nm when fiting chain. Newer use the same bolts. They must be new and locked on clean surface free of any oil. Its important.

I've done it today. Completed the job but it took 11 hours. Also be careful when replacing the chain as one of the camshaft might turn 45 degrees and it will be almost impossible to put it back in alignment as the hydraulic tapers create slot of pushback. When that happens everything gets out of alignment and it's real pain to get everything lined up. Make sure you mark sprockets to the block before taking chain off

Very nice tutorial but whats missing is the leap around struggling the timing cover back on. I would urge anyone taking this job on to first of all drain the oil and water, remove the sump and thoroughly clean it. Refit the sump with some temporary 4 - 6mm thick plywood or nylon packers around the 10 bolts (not the gearbox ones). This will become apparent when you come to refit the timing case. Please don't bodge all your hard work by using sealant anywhere on the engine. Only use new oil seals and gaskets, especially on the sump.

Hey, saw you didn't get an answer yet. Usually the timing chain on a corsa is save to use for about 100.000 to 150.000 kilometers (60 to 90 thousand miles). Also, when you start your car, listen for a rattle, its very noticable and goes away in a few seconds. I would recommend to replace it at 150000, but if you get the rattle noise, replace it as soon as possible. I hope this helps you enough.

Especially on cold start i got a rattle noise for 2-3 sec - not always, but sometimes - the engine light does NOT light up!
Nevertheless - i will replace timing chain and valve lifters - cost point around 230€ (material only).

If you get a rattle on could could be timing chain touch the guides, need to be replaced, but you don't need to change the lifters, the cost of lifters are around £11 x 16 lifters and the timing chain kit would be around £100 so you will have there £ 276 only in parts.

Where the water pump mates to the timing cover can that gasket allow oil into the coolant?
I've heard a few tales about oil in coolant on these engines but it's not the head.

Hello, excellent video. My car is a 2008 corsa d 1.3l diesel. Is the procedure more or less the same? I think the oil sump has to come off on the diesel version as the chain goes down further, is this correct?

I see that you did not use the sprocket tool later on in the video. Do you actually need to install the srocket if you already have the locking tool in place?

My Corsa D 1.0 2012 sometimes cranks forever the first try, then fires up always 2nd time.
Noticed new plugs are already black after only 2 weeks, so over fueling as well.
Could this be a timing problem?
Is it worth changing Crankshaft sensor?
No fault codes and car drives ok, no stalling and tick over is within normal range and steady.
    Any idea's of the cause?

    • @HOWTODIYwithEddy

Hi, I don't think the crankshaft sensor is faulty. If the chain is stretched, it could do that. Does the car on could make any rattle noise ?

@@HOWTODIYwithEddy car sounds ok for a 3 cylinder engine. No noticeable rattle. Though I just spoke to a mechanic and he thinks it could be the chain. Taking it in on Monday for inspection.

@gavinledermann7029 could be the chain becoming stretch, it could be slightly of timing because of that and only starts when crankshaft sensor and camshaft sensor get sincronized, once the timing cover is off it could see if there is a slack on the chain

@@eduardopinheiro644 Thanks for the reply. Yes, I am thinking timing chain is the likely cause. Will get it inspected on Monday. Last garage failed to diagnose the problem and changed injectors, coil pack, airflow meter, oil + filter, cleaned throttle body. So a lot of money spent already and a possible timing chain replacement coming up.
I'll stick to Toyota's after this experience.

After rotating the engine by hand try to lock the engine again with locking tools, make sure it locks at top center, if locks, the misfire is something else and not the timing, but I think the timing is wrong.
