Great work. The garage charged me nigh on £300 to fit a replacement alternator [not new] as I was getting a whining noise from the auxilliary side the engine after they suggested it might be the alternator bearings...which it wasn't. so I decided to replace the air con compressor, water pump and tensioner myself...the noise didn't go away. Whilst doing all this I noticed the crankshaft pulley was vibrating and soon discovered to my dismay it was coming from the crankshaft mains. Replaced the mains and connecting rod big end shells from underneath the car...what a job! Now in the business putting all the crankcase and a new oil pump and fittings back. I've done it today. Completed the job but it took 11 hours. @@ricksivyer7427 You may have already solved the issue by now but if not, should the timing not be set now it may have jumped on start up. Usual causes are cam sprocket not torqued correctly (or not tight enough) or pin not removed from tensioner and timing chain skips a tooth or two instantly. Also possible that when torquing the bolts the camshaft moved slightly putting the timing out of alignment once more. Did you check it by rotating the engine by hand a full timing cycle to see if the timing tools realigned again. If not the clonk might be piston against valve, damage you won't see unless the head is removed. It would explain your symptoms. Having replaced hydraulic lifters which need no adjustment, in addition to rotating the engine by hand to recheck the timing (I rotate twice, check it, rotate twice again and check it again) it also serves to move the oil into the oil circuit, you can disconnect the coil pack and remove the fuel pump fuse / relay so that you circulate the oil and build oil pressure under a no start cranking situation. After a few seconds cranking, plug them back in and then start the engine for real when it has oil circulated to most parts.

It's not as complicated or difficult as it looks I did one myself a few years ago and when you strip an engine you remember when you put it back together, the timing chain cover does have a lot of similar size bolts though so just bare that in mind
I've heard so many Corsa C's and D's with stretched timing chains. It sounds like someone has dropped a bag of nails into the engine. I've heard different engines with timing chains and even at high mileage sound fine.
Just to add, trying to take exhaust side cams off to replace rocker that sits on lifter, trying figure out how to lock sprockets only so I don’t knock timing out and I can take the cam out
Hey, saw you didn't get an answer yet. Usually the timing chain on a corsa is save to use for about 100.000 to 150.000 kilometers (60 to 90 thousand miles). Also, when you start your car, listen for a rattle, its very noticable and goes away in a few seconds. I would recommend to replace it at 150000, but if you get the rattle noise, replace it as soon as possible. I hope this helps you enough.
Mine is the same and quoted for timing chain replacement about £1000+ a local mechanic, just because the timing chain is rattling and its awkward to change it unless take off the whole engine! I checked the price on of new chain from parts shop quoted £450 only upper chain
Hi Eddy, what is the purpose of the sprocket locking tool? Is it needed during reassemblying to make sure the camshaft sensor is in the correct position? Thank you
Awesome vid mate genuinely fantastic only tiny criticism is if you plan on keeping the car dropping the sump to clean out the gunk and strainer is good practice whilst in there But again it's a tiny criticism as your video is the best I've seen and makes the job look way less impossible that vauxhall would have you believe it is for a DIY job
Brilliant video - thank you.. I'm attempting a head gasket tomorrow on my son's 07 Corsa which is a write off unless i do it myself realistically. I'm thinking that this will get me a good way there :)
@@HOWTODIYwithEddy A head gasket has to be cheaper than a replacement car, basic economics. Vauxhall are an old company, they went downhill IMHO, after GM bought them up. I'm sure older English built,pre-GM models wouldn't have used inferior chain tensioners, even on a basic model car. My last one was a Cavalier 1.8 GL & it was a bit of a goer- if you know what I mean-lol.

Im getting a little rattling noise from the driver side front and I've just had a new water pump fitted could it be my timing chain could you please give me advice
Hi, usually, the timing chain rattle starts appear on cold starts for a few seconds and then stops once the oil starts to circulate. If on cold starts, there is a rattle that is more likely to be the timing chain issue.
Just came here from your other video of replacing tappets nd lifters. Do you really have to do all this work just to change the tappets and lifters?? Great videos by the way 👍
Hello, excellent video. My car is a 2008 corsa d 1.3l diesel. Is the procedure more or less the same? I think the oil sump has to come off on the diesel version as the chain goes down further, is this correct?

I have an Agila A 2001, my mechanic said it would cost £540 to do the timing chain, is this the same engine it looks very similar. Z12XE I think mine is
Is timing chain noise a common problem the corsa d 2008?. Cuase on my car chain makes a continuous noise and a mechanic said that the chain is hitting against timing chain cover. What do you think
Great work / great video - i own a Corsa D (1.2L, 59KW / 80 PS / 112.700km) and i think timing chain (in German Steuerkette) and valve lifters (Ventilstößel) must be replaced. Especially on cold start i got a rattle noise for 2-3 sec - not always, but sometimes - the engine light does NOT light up! Nevertheless - i will replace timing chain and valve lifters - cost point around 230€ (material only).
If you get a rattle on could could be timing chain touch the guides, need to be replaced, but you don't need to change the lifters, the cost of lifters are around £11 x 16 lifters and the timing chain kit would be around £100 so you will have there £ 276 only in parts.
Hello Eddy, I see that you did not use the sprocket tool later on in the video. Do you actually need to install the srocket if you already have the locking tool in place? Also, this engine looks very similar to my Astra H 1.4 2006, do you believe the process would be kinda the same? Thank you!
Where the water pump mates to the timing cover can that gasket allow oil into the coolant? I've heard a few tales about oil in coolant on these engines but it's not the head.
Great job, professional work. I like the video. where is your workshop. The work you did with the purchase of spare parts, how much did the whole cost? I have the same car and I want you to do the same job. Where is your workshop? I am in Manchester Thank you
My Corsa D 1.0 2012 sometimes cranks forever the first try, then fires up always 2nd time. Noticed new plugs are already black after only 2 weeks, so over fueling as well. Could this be a timing problem? Is it worth changing Crankshaft sensor? No fault codes and car drives ok, no stalling and tick over is within normal range and steady. Any idea's of the cause?
@@HOWTODIYwithEddy car sounds ok for a 3 cylinder engine. No noticeable rattle. Though I just spoke to a mechanic and he thinks it could be the chain. Taking it in on Monday for inspection. Can you tell by the tension in chain from the top If it's too loose? Is cost still around £500 to replace?
@gavinledermann7029 could be the chain becoming stretch, it could be slightly of timing because of that and only starts when crankshaft sensor and camshaft sensor get sincronized, once the timing cover is off it could see if there is a slack on the chain
@@eduardopinheiro644 Thanks for the reply. Yes, I am thinking timing chain is the likely cause. Will get it inspected on Monday. Last garage failed to diagnose the problem and changed injectors, coil pack, airflow meter, oil + filter, cleaned throttle body. So a lot of money spent already and a possible timing chain replacement coming up. I'll stick to Toyota's after this experience.
Two things 1- the sprocket locking tool, whats that for. It is in 1 shot and gone for the rest of the video. 2- if your going to the trouble of changing the chain then why not the worn cam sprockets as they will be just as worn out. ?
If the kit come with bolts change to new ones as they are stretch bolts and should be replaced every time you change the sprockets. I never had issues with it.
What is the purpose of the sprocket locking tool at 7:25 - I ask this as it isn't secured/bolted into place and it isn't there (in the video) afterwards - what is its purpose please; is this an 'alternative job tool' to the other cam locking bar at 7:17 ?? Also, once the crank locking bar is in position (for when removing the head) is it really necessary to secure the cam locking tool(s) at this/head removing stage - it seems that the cam locking tool(s) only need to be used at head rebuild stage, to realign the cams with the locked crank < is this correct thinking please??
I believe thats the vvt (variable vlave timing) locking tool. But since didn't replace the sprockets didn't need to lock the vvt in place. The cam and crank can move out of time in not locked.
It would be around £450 (timing chain kit+valves and rectify head+work), some garages could charge more but is a big job, if is main dealer you look at 900 pounds

I tried to replace the headgasket on a corsa c 1.2 16v but in the process I got stuck at the bolt above the oil pan. It's head shape is damaged so it won't bite on anything. Is there any other way I could lock the crankshaft ? I was thinking to drill the bolt and rethread the hole or put the car in 5th gear and slam the brakes...any suggestions ?
They rattle horribly at tick over. They all rattle a bit on startup but that should go in a couple of seconds. The best preventative is change the oil every 6 months. My sons corsa has 135,000 miles and no rattle, I did a chain for a customer who only had 55k on her car. She only does very short journeys and changes the oil once a year. Well I just do at at the MOT time and charge her, otherwise she’d never get it done.
Why you did not replace camshaft sprockets ? I thought that camshaft sprocket bolt should be replace for new every time it was opened. Any way good video.
when i got the kit delivered it didn't came with sprocket, so when i change the lifters on my other video, i change the sprocket and bolt, as only need to take one sprocket. thank you for your comments

Hi man I replaced the timing chain on my corsa D and there’s still a misfire even thought the timing marks line up and when I turned the engine with a ratchet 4-6 times it turned over fine with no issue s
After rotating the engine by hand try to lock the engine again with locking tools, make sure it locks at top center, if locks, the misfire is something else and not the timing, but I think the timing is wrong. Good luck

Hello I have an Astra h 1.4 16v and the timing chain is on its way out. Do you have a video for that or could do it using this video are there engine layouts the same? Thank you
Hi mate, I had my timing chain changed, along with the oil pump on the timing cover as mine was broken in pieces! Also had the water pump and auxiliary belt changed. The mechanic did not slacken or remove the sump. After the job it sounded even louder and when it was driven for 4 miles there was a ridiculously loud noise and it was overheating and coolant reduced down (typical head gasket symptoms). There seems to be coolant mixed also as the oil cap seems to have some slush-like substance. I've been told the sump should have been removed to ensure no upward pressure on the oil pump. I can't see you doing that. Can you please advise? I've been told not taking off the sump can cause oil pump failure again due to pressure it can cause when fitting on, even with new timing cover gasket. Also, when removing the timing chain cover there can be some residual coolant left in old water pump which falls into the sump (even when draining coolant out) which causes the head gasket symptoms. Would you agree? I can't see you removing the sump in this video. Please advise. Thanks!
hi pal, thanks for your question...the sump indeed has to be removed to allow more room to remove the timing chain cover as the oil pick up screen gets in the way and it can be a challenging some times, according to the manual of manufacture not removing the sump can indeed cause a loss of oil pressure leading to a failure afterwords..if the car still rattling and is overheating, i would advise to check the thermostat and the timing, a bad oil pump can cause a rattle as the oil is not circulating properly, but in that case you wold have an oil warning light on the dashboard...you might have a different issue in your car, or the job was not done properly im afraid, regarding this video ,i did not removed the oil sump by mistake, but i did slacken the bolts , and i have removed the sump after and resealed it properly with RTV sealant

Very nice video, very well done! Many thanks for the torque indications.
Maybe consider to change the engine supports in the next service.
I am glad that i could help
advice doing this way the sump was not droped slighty you risk having low oil pressure there should ber good seal from sump to crankcase
Yes
Great video! Very well explained and very professional job ! One question- when would you know that its time to replace the chain ?
Thanks.
@@kbootijzer2418 Thank you very much for your help !
Rattling noise when starting the car on cold
Very good video , just done head and chain on 2011 cheers
i am happy if my video help you or someone, that's the purpose
Great Video, do you also have the torques u need for the cylinder head gasket replacement?
I think I have a few videos on vauxhall torques on my channel
Yes we do, check on my channel on torque settings
There are still such large pads in the box. When are they needed?
Nice job. But I think The gasket and the tensioner are for A10-12-14XER A14NET engines...
yes, that's why i have changed the gasket, the tensioner is the same.
Mine is the same and quoted for timing chain replacement about £1000+ a local mechanic, just because the timing chain is rattling and its awkward to change it unless take off the whole engine! I checked the price on of new chain from parts shop quoted £450 only upper chain
Hi, it's a big job to do it ,but £1000 I think is too much
Hi Eddy, what is the purpose of the sprocket locking tool? Is it needed during reassemblying to make sure the camshaft sensor is in the correct position? Thank you
to make sure all the locking points are right
Awesome vid mate genuinely fantastic only tiny criticism is if you plan on keeping the car dropping the sump to clean out the gunk and strainer is good practice whilst in there
But again it's a tiny criticism as your video is the best I've seen and makes the job look way less impossible that vauxhall would have you believe it is for a DIY job
Thanks for the tip
Brilliant video - thank you.. I'm attempting a head gasket tomorrow on my son's 07 Corsa which is a write off unless i do it myself realistically. I'm thinking that this will get me a good way there :)
Get a new fuckin car what's the prob
@@HOWTODIYwithEddy A head gasket has to be cheaper than a replacement car, basic economics.
Vauxhall are an old company, they went downhill IMHO, after GM bought them up.
I'm sure older English built,pre-GM models wouldn't have used inferior chain tensioners, even on a basic model car.
My last one was a Cavalier 1.8 GL & it was a bit of a goer- if you know what I mean-lol.
You dont need to change the water pump too?
No, but once you are there is better do it, as it is common failure, and is not a small job to do, but u don't need to do if u don't want.
super video. with details thats the most important.thank you so much you gave me more confidence to do the job may be one day .i will save for future reference .top video keep the good work on mate will watch yours

Great video going be a big help. Thank you for giving me your time
Glad to help
why did you change, did it rattle? how many miles? thanks.
yes it was rattling, was with 79000 miles
Just came here from your other video of replacing tappets nd lifters. Do you really have to do all this work just to change the tappets and lifters??
Great videos by the way 👍
Yes you do
Hello, excellent video. My car is a 2008 corsa d 1.3l diesel. Is the procedure more or less the same? I think the oil sump has to come off on the diesel version as the chain goes down further, is this correct?
How clean is that engine bay 😍
Very!
Great video thanks
Anyone got recommendations on what sort of parts are a must for this sort of task. Eg Torque Wrenches, car Jack's, engine hoist etc?
axle stand.jack lift.E type sockets.locking tool .torque wrench. new antifreeze. (may be)as you will loose copland.when removing water pump.or you can top up.
jack lift to support the engine put under sump. use piece of wood.then you can remove engine mounting.
no need engine hoist.use jack lift instead
@@TheHamouda thanks for that response! So I could put the car on axle stands at the front, then buy some 1/2 tonne trolley jack and have that placed on the sump where I drain the oil?
ni mate axle stand on the side of the car near the wheel. use jack lift to put it under sump.use piece of wood to protect sump.when you support thene sump.then it's safe to take the mounting and remove all bolts.and water pump.you will need anti freeze. as you gonna loose some of it .you dont need to change oil.i can send you video .or watch some video on you tube.how to replace water pump corsa.exemple
I have an Agila A 2001, my mechanic said it would cost £540 to do the timing chain, is this the same engine it looks very similar. Z12XE I think mine is
yes the price is about right
Bravissimo! Ho anch'io la stessa macchina. Well done!
Thank you
Is timing chain noise a common problem the corsa d 2008?. Cuase on my car chain makes a continuous noise and a mechanic said that the chain is hitting against timing chain cover. What do you think
could be that, only an assessment will get the issue identified
Great video. Unfortunately it made me realise to not attempt this at all
Great work / great video - i own a Corsa D (1.2L, 59KW / 80 PS / 112.700km) and i think timing chain (in German Steuerkette) and valve lifters (Ventilstößel) must be replaced.
Great vid mate , any tips on torquing the crank bolt up again when refitting , I don't have a pulley holder tool
Hello Eddy,
I see that you did not use the sprocket tool later on in the video. Do you actually need to install the srocket if you already have the locking tool in place?
Also, this engine looks very similar to my Astra H 1.4 2006, do you believe the process would be kinda the same?
Thank you!
Hope you changed the water pump too?
The water pump is in the outside of the timing chain, no need replacement when doing the timing chain, could be done as safety measure or is leaking.

@@HOWTODIYwithEddy really amazing. If I was close I would to visit you
My Corsa D 1.0 2012 sometimes cranks forever the first try, then fires up always 2nd time.
Noticed new plugs are already black after only 2 weeks, so over fueling as well.
Could this be a timing problem?
Is it worth changing Crankshaft sensor?
No fault codes and car drives ok, no stalling and tick over is within normal range and steady.
Any idea's of the cause?
Hi, I don't think the crankshaft sensor is faulty. If the chain is stretched, it could do that. Does the car on could make any rattle noise ?
@@HOWTODIYwithEddy car sounds ok for a 3 cylinder engine. No noticeable rattle. Though I just spoke to a mechanic and he thinks it could be the chain. Taking it in on Monday for inspection.
Can you tell by the tension in chain from the top If it's too loose?
Is cost still around £500 to replace?
@@HOWTODIYwithEddy I thought rough, uneven idle and cutting out would be sign of faulty timing belt?
Any chance you can replace mine, I don't think the necessary skills to do it myself 😂 nice work sir
Thank you 😊
Great video well done doing mine in a few days how long did it take you start to finish many thanks
About 3 hours
Will this be the same for astra 1.4 Z14XEP? Thanks
Two things 1- the sprocket locking tool, whats that for. It is in 1 shot and gone for the rest of the video. 2- if your going to the trouble of changing the chain then why not the worn cam sprockets as they will be just as worn out. ?
I change oil and oil filter at the same time after doing the chain
I would have also replaced the timing chain sprockets?
Yes if comes with kit
Great video. Gave me the confidence to attempt chain replacement on my own Corsa, (if I decide to keep the car for long ;p )
My parents Corsa D has reached 80k miles, its running fine as it is at the moment but when does the chain, tensioner and pumps need to be replaced?
Only if there is any issue with the chain, otherwise don't need to be changed
Only if there is any issue with the chain, otherwise don't need to be changed
what was the gasket for the warter pump looked like cardboard ?
Did you have any issues reusing the camshaft sprocket bolts?
How much would a garage usually charge for this to be done? Mine has gone & it’s also thrown an exhaust valve stuck open on cylinder one
It would be around £450 (timing chain kit+valves and rectify head+work), some garages could charge more but is a big job.

Hey fella did you replace the water pump as well seen as it was out or is this not necessary? Also how long should this take as I'm looking into getting mine done. Thank and I appreciate the upload
No I didn't replace the water pump, to do only the water pump it will take around 2 hours, to do the timing work all will take around 4h
So which oil are u using there ?
5w30 c3
I usually buy it with eeg
@HOWTODIYwithEddy i knew...the mechanic put 15w40 hes telling us about high mileage and before we used that 5w30
When do you know you need your timing chain changed ?? I got an Sri 1.4 2010 with 95000 on the clock
Only if rattles
Where did you get the kit from, please?
How comes you only changed the exhaust sprocket and not the inlet?
Hi, two reasons, first the kit only came with one, second i only needed to undo the exhaust one.

Hi there. I noticed you said it was out of timing because the chain was stretched and slightly out of time it because of it. What symptoms would you get if your chain is stretched? Thanks
when starting the car a rattle from the chain

Hi man I replaced the timing chain on my corsa D and there’s still a misfire even thought the timing marks line up and when I turned the engine with a ratchet 4-6 times it turned over fine with no issue s
After rotating the engine by hand try to lock the engine again with locking tools, make sure it locks at top center, if locks, the misfire is something else and not the timing, but I think the timing is wrong.
Good luck
i think the timing is wrong
What size and type of sockets is it on the engine?
Nightmare for my Corsa 2006 C 1.2 Twinport.
Made from my mechanic first time after 70.000 miles, after short time returned as noisy as before.
Made second time at around 90.000 miles, same as before...
From 110.000 miles, sound as a Fiesta 1.1 Mk1 until 1000/1200 rpm, after that to the max rev is fine....
Litte better only when engine is cold....
I think the problem is the hydraulic chain tensioner....
From 5w30 to 5w40 nothing changed, only cold gave litte help.....
What to do?
Could be , i don't know what to say, it as happen every 20k, hummm strange.
Hello I have an Astra h 1.4 16v and the timing chain is on its way out. Do you have a video for that or could do it using this video are there engine layouts the same? Thank you
I don't have a video at the moment, but is different from the corsa video
@@HOWTODIYwithEddy ok thank you for the reply
@@HOWTODIYwithEddy thanks for the reply mate, much appreciated
