Hi Baz, you did my Vauxhall Astra K timing chain and oil chain, with oil pump, two months ago, it was the one that got over 100k views on RUclips, the TAXI.
Just wanted to say a massive thank you, as you did a fantastic job. Still going strong 8k miles later and now on 174,000. Hopefully it will reach 300,000 miles.
    Thanks again mate,
    Matthew

Talk about a pain in the arse!
Manufacturers aren't only making it virtually impossible to do these jobs at home, they're also making it more difficult for mechanics like yourself.
    Reason - money!!
Manufacturers don't want parts replacing, they want us to buy a new vehicle, and scrap the old one!

Thanks Baz, this gave me the confidence to do mine. Took 20 hours, plainly i could do it quicker now.....a warning is that the top chain cover has that wind in hex, under a bolt, to help release the cover. When doing it up that single bolt has half the torque of the rest. If you do it up to the torque of the rest of the same size bolts, the bottom corner cracks, bet you cant guess how i know that. Fortunately the crack is below the sealant line... Fingers crossed.
Replaced the oil pump and flywheel/ clutch as well (the 110k mile flywheel and clutch were original and barely worn, shouldnt have bought new before i took it apart) Just shy of £1000 in parts

This video is a Perfect example of stupid engineering why not put it either on the offside to save everyone time OR like the audi's straight at the far back of the engine so you just drop the entire sub frame.

Shame about this design flaw from factory with the tensioner. It’s going to write many diesel astras off in the next few years as once they hit about 80-90k when they fail they’re only worth less than 5 grand anyway. Whilst you’re there you’d be daft to not do the dual mass and flywheel adding another £500 in parts at least. Bet when it’s all said and done including actually doing the chain you’re looking at about 2k at least to get it done all for a car that’s worth only about 5. If it was mine I’d struggle to get my head round keeping it and sorting.
Anyway I’m only an apprentice myself and think these videos are brilliant because everything is done to the book as I like to do things whilst most at my place are content just doing a job half arsed and back out the door.
Keep up the great work 👍

Can I ask how it could have been avoided? My 1.6 diesel astra has just done over 144k, nobody could tell me when it needs to be checked, I've had services done but it just went. It's still in the garage after a week, just been told the oil chain has gone and that's extra labour (although it looks in the same place from your video) after quoting 18 hours already. Thanks for the videos, it's really helped me understand how much work is involved 🙂

    Hi Baz,
Regarding the chain tensioner on my 2017 Mokka X 1.6 CDTI. The engine rattles occasionally on a cold start for just a second, and then sounds perfect. Literally a split second. If I turn the car off and back on following the cold start, I can't hear the rattle which I assume is because oil pressure has built up.
It won’t do it again unless the car has been sitting around for a while. Can the chain tensioner still be replaced or the gasket applied and if so, how can I get a quote from you?
Just want to reiterate that it doesn’t rattle when running. Just for a split second on the occasional cold start, so not all the time.
    Thank you.

Why any manufacturer would design an engine with this timing chain arrangement defies any explanation!! And why chains anyway, they're always a ball ache, expensive and are highly likely to cause oil leaks afterwards!! I'll always check any car I buy in future to ensure it's neither chain or gearbox end chain cam drive, if it is I won't go there. It's belts or nothing for me!! Well done on the task though, rather you than me!

There is never a service schedule for chains as metal never degrades. It does, however get worn. Especially the plastic guides. Timing chains have been made thinner and thinner, so now, any car from year 2000 onwards, timing chains last approx 150k. Some go as soon as 100k, some might hold on until 200k. It is why I prefer a dry belt which is replaced every 100k miles.
