On my Astra K what happens is, it works perfectly for a few weeks, you wouldn't even say it's a diesel how nice it works. And then it happens that the chain starts rattling in the middle of driving, and rattle hard. Then I have to immediately turn the engine off and start it again. Sometimes it happens that chain rattles only for the first few seconds at the first ignition, and then it is not heard again for several weeks. Sometimes I don't hear it during a cold start but when it's hot, if I turn it off while it's hot and then turn it on, I hear the sound of the chain rattle for a few seconds. Very strange. What comes to my mind is that the plastic part of the guides broke off and sometimes it sits in the right place inside the engine, the chain is tensioned and the engine works perfectly. And when that plastic peace moves and sits in a bad place, the chain is not tensioned enough and the chain rattles. What do you think about that? Because it is unclear to me how the engine can work perfectly for a few weeks, and then for a few days, catastrophically, so much so that it has to be turned off in the middle of driving. Sometimes there is no chain rattle at all, and sometimes it is so loud that you think the whole engine will fall apart. Isn't that strange?
BAZ, as a fellow Taff I've just started following mate. Doing a few DIY jobs on the cars at home (what could go wrong?) love the videos, think most people underestimate the work involved in these repairs. Keep up the good work fella.
Long gone are the days of swapping an astra clutch without taking the box out!! The nonsense in this video is my living too, is this progress?? Im really not so sure!!
Wow, great job I can see why cars go beyond economic repair!! Do you always change the clutch and flywheel aswell ? Can't understand why they put the chain on the gearbox side?
Very nice work sir, what a nightmare of a job. I watched your video in the morning, went for ride out in the afternoon and almost without me knowing 😅 I returned home with two bottles of the cleaning product featured in said video 😮 I'll give it a try methinks.
Had one arrive with same noise. Told boss you take that on I'm out of here. Mini 4x4 nearly broke me not attempting one of these. I'll stick to 1.3 cdti and jaguar ingenium and ford wetbelts. That's enough in-between services.
I had a 1.3 cdti corsa C, that engine was brilliant. Got it upto 192, 000 miles and the car was knackered overall, but the motor was still going strong. It would have soared over 200k easily otherwise
Awesome video. Can I add another request to make the introductory music a bit quieter? It’s a rude shock when I watch through the headphones! Anyway thanks for producing such entertaining and informative content. You’re a natural in front of the camera, mate. Top work.
Thanks for posting yet again - does anyone know can the top tensioner be removed with ONLY the top timing chain cover removed ?? Customer has asked me to check & fit a new tensioner (if needed) - chain is not ratteling but he wants prevension - would prefer to do the full job (for comeback reasons) however all is ok with the car at the moment and he pays the bill Just do not want to say it is possible - as I have not done one before Thank you for any help
How many hours did it take. I've got a Mokka with 100k in with a EGR falt I noticed it has the rattle for a few seconds on a cold start. Sofar I've removed the EGR + cooler and inlet manifold the cooler was blocked completely and the inlet manifold was pretty bad. As I'm halfway there I think it makes sense to do the chain as well or at least change the tensioner and fit the gasket
@@bazmeredith Thanks the owner decided to leave it for now. Apparently the forums say it should cost around £280 to have it done and it's the same for 1.4 1.6 and 1.7 🧑💻 🤐 ok.
Looks like this engine has some oil sludge. I partly think the cause of chain issue is long service intervals. I decided to change the oil every 8k miles after having my chain replaced. No issues so far.
Have a look through my videos I think 2 back and I did a chain on exactly the same engine which had covered 188k miles with 10k miles oil interval..... And once stripped down it was cleaner than this.... Routine service is key 100%
What type of idiot designs an engine so that the gearbox has to be removed to change the timing chain? It would be ok if the chain lasted forever, but in a lot of cases they don't even last as well as a rubber belt. BMW are also guilty of this.
What rubbish cars! Rover 75 CDTi's, over 20 years old, many of them well north of 200,000 miles and still on the original timing chains. I can't understand the poor quality of newer timing chains or the appalling design that requires 2 days work to change one. Surely, this means that as these cars get just a little bit older, they will prematurely end up in the scrapyards. Ridiculous.
Baz, I had a clutch replacement on the same motor as this and when I had it back the clutch bite was about half inch from the floor, before it was replaced it was about half to three quarters the way up. Now i have driven many a car over the years and had clutch replacements and every Time ive had a clutch replaced it has never been that low. I do know quite a bit about motors S I've replaced a clutch myself in older cars, ie Austin maestro, allegro ect. And the bite has roughly been in the same place as the old clutch but without any slip. My local garage told me that my car is normal. I always thought that a clutch should bite at about half to three quarters of the way up. Can you advise please?

Great video mate and great job 👏👍
Great work Baz.
Nice one baz, have a great Bank Holiday 🤙
Well done Baz, but how the hell do you keep warm in that old tin garage 😂

Cheers buddy
Are vauxhall still doing these under warranty if the car is under 10 years old and under 100k with full service history?
By the looks of the varnish I think that saltwater would be just as effective as lubricant 😮
Hi Baz. Where are you based and how much you charge for this job? Mokka X, same engine, same problem :(

Yes it can be done with just the top cover removed
Do the 1.4 Astra's have this issue too?

Allow 2 days for drying time on the sealant... Job it's self just over 10 hours given or take if everything comes undone easy

Hi baz need a chain fitting on 1.6 cdti insignia any ball park figure if you hit no probs thanks
Drop me an email

Same here, my 1.6 cdti is now on over 180,000 miles with no problems, hope it stays that way. Has an oil change every 8000 miles

It tells me not to buy a 1.6cdti 🤣 big labour time job

Engineered to fail. What a ridiculous design, then put it on the gearbox side to make sure it’s difficult to repair. Absolute garbage

That's the plan.
Just no reason to have the Camchain on the clutch side it’s utter lunacy!
German engineering at its finest 😂 What a load of crap.
The worst make of car ever owned bag of bolts
Does chain needs to be replaced if no noise at driving, only on half second on start up,250 000km factory chain?

Flywheel too ?
If it's that close to floor it may need bleeding
@@Theorangeman. yes, dual mast.
@bazmeredith they have Blead it several times because I complained and its still the same. Any advice?
Should a new clutch bite about half to 3/4 of the way up the pedal or am I stupid.
