Should your feet stay on the ground or is it better to go on your toes when you go for the pull?

I go onto the toes. It works more is the legs

Ideally the feet stay planted during the pull to stay smooth and efficient. An exception could be a sprint effort where you try to put everything into each stroke and come on to your toes to use your full bodyweight

I get discomfort in my lower back on the ski erg. Could this be a flexibility issue or could I have bad technique?

You shouldn’t have your back moving much - it’s mostly upper body with little movement from the legs

Unfortunately, completely wrong technique. At least of you're practicing for cross-country skiing.

This doesn’t seem like the right technique as he pulls the ropes out all the way and down then he pulls them back, which really doesn’t add much to the length of his stroke and is wasted time. The shortest line between 2 points is a straight line but this guy is making a J shape with his stroke.
