FLIXBUS to London: 10½ hours on an overnight bus!

  • Having recently travelled from London to Glasgow on Megabus, taking 8.5 hours, I decided to give Flixbus a try. This service operates via Edinburgh, Newcastle, Sunderland, Sheffield, Leicester and London Finchley Road, terminating at London Victoria. At around 460 miles it's the UK's longest coach service. I've never been a great fan of overnight buses, mainly due to their cramped conditions and lack of legroom, but with a £2.50 supplement I could guarantee the seat next to me free. What could possibly go wrong? #flixbus

The overnight coaches can be tiring sometimes, but some of us are on a budget and there just isn't any other option. You can make up sandwiches, take a thermos of tea, a book and something to listen to. It is okay. Dress comfortably, take ear plugs, an eye blind and a neck pillow. The drivers are always nice and friendly.

I use to travel a lot on the Eurolines Dublin to London overnight service and always loved it, but it was suspended because of Covid so please it will recommence soon. As I traveled from Donegal it took all in all 21hrs but enjoyed every second of it and the journey and enjoyed the journey on the Irish Ferries Ulysses.

I enjoyed the video. I recently took a similar length triip on Flix from Marseille to Roma. I found the busses to be new and clean. I will say I was impressed by the skill of the driver for a long time in Italy how he navigated on these narrow roads with huge cliff on the side… big tip. Website says they sell food and drink on the bus. They do not! Make sure you have enough water and snacks for a 12 hour journey!

When I did London - Glasgow overnight trips a few times, the whole benefit of the fast coaches was that they'd trundle steadily down the M-way (with one stop at a service area) making it quite restful and even I managed to sleep quite a bit. If you are always pulling into towns, stopping and starting, then this will make far more disturbances and make it much harder to sleep. And traffic builds up earlier these days - by 7.30 you might get stuck in early commuting jams in London! I'm surprised it only took 2 hours longer to go via Edinburgh and Newcastle / Sunderland!

Dep London Vic Coach Station 20.00, and arrive at Glasgow Buchanan St around 10.00, so a LONG time !! Plenty of breaks, though, for wees and leg-stretching. Breakfast break at Lockerbie.

Such a shame there's nothing more comfortable for coaches in the UK. The LUX coaches in the Baltics are amazing. I went from Riga in Latvia to Tallinn in Estonia and it had a big plush leather recliner seat, free coffee, a screen in the back of the seat in front of you, headset, complimentary water and cereal bar, and the 4.5 hour ride cost about 20 Euros. I dunno why we put up with paying so much for so little in this country.

This was the first video I watched on your channel a year or so ago and made me subscribe. I've loved all your videos since. As someone who lives in Leicester it's worth noting that you picked up at Fosse Park on the outskirts of Leicester. Other Flixbus services carry on into Leicester City Centre and pick up at St Margarets Bus station. It can be confusing for some expecting to board at one place and the coach is at the other. I'm not sure why Flixbus do this.

Back in 2001 my wife and myself went from Dudley in UK to Fuiggi in Italy, we took a total of 34 hours, there was a loo on the coach and we had about 6 comfort/stretch your legs stops en route, it was an overnight coach, my wife hated it as she couldn’t sleep, the worst part of the trip was going through the Gothard Tunnel, extractors weren’t working correctly and fumes crept into the coach, and of course we had to do it all again in reverse at the end of our holiday, would we do it again never, being senior citizens we both ended up with swollen legs and feet for a while after, interesting video.

    This is an interesting one.
It seems FlixBus tap into a previously unserved market by directly serving places like Sunderland with Scotland, Sheffield and the Midlands but only adding two hours on to the journey time with plenty of padding out of the timetable which allowed the driver to claw back nearly twenty minutes of delay.
There's one thing I don't mind doing and that's long distance coach travel so I'd probably give this a bash one day.

At a couple of the stops we could jump out for a quick cigarette, but nothing more than a minute or two, so if it was purely to stretch legs, and the bus wasn't running too far behind schedule, you could stand outside briefly. There was a toilet on board, but you needed to descend a few steps to get to it (I chose not to explore this part of the coach). The extra £2.50 for the adjacent seat to be free was a life saver.

Wow, I like a bargain but not sure i would put myself through that. Legroom is atrocious! It didn't seem that many people would want to get on at Sunderland or Sheffield at 3 in the morning, I wonder if they could miss them out, or at least stop at some services to give you all a break!

extra seat for 2.50 is an excellent idea for solo travellers... im not very big and could curl up quite comfortably on two seats. not sure if i can last 10 hours ;).

The worst coach service I ever took was from Swansea to London back in the 70s. Uncomfortable, cramped, slow and rattly with a coach that had seen better days. It put me off coach travel again for decades. But modern long distance coaches are OK, I've used National Express and Megabus several times from SW Scotland to the south of England, including overnight, and the trips were just fine. Even nicer when you think about the money you save.

Fresh? It must be my clean, wholesome lifestyle. (ha ha). After I finished that video, I headed over to Victoria Railway Station, washed my face, brushed the hair and used a litre of deodorant to make myself feel presentable.

I spent eight hours on a coach not as bad as I thought and a lot cheaper then the train the coach cost £32. The train 🚆 £124. A big difference in price.

I watched your video of the uncomfortable and expensive train coach trip, and this one was apparently no worse, and no doubt a lot cheaper! Still, I'd opt for the shorter Megabus ride.
