I know this is an old comment, but for those who do have connections, I personally try to leave 3 hours whenever possible, as in some cases, you may have to go get your bags and re-check them on your connection, plus this gives you some leeway if the initial (first) flight is delayed, which can happen especially with international flights from what I've seen / been told. Tap is a great airline. It's a joy to fly with tap. Flew 4x last year with Tap to Ghana. My only problem or let's say discomfort is the food, other then that, it's truly a great airline❤
The answer might be far simpler: the A330's default 2-4-2 seat layout. It gives you roughly 2.5 to 3 cm extra width for your shoulder to relax without bumping someone next to you. I think travelers always take seat width for granted until they suffer the squeeze of Boeing 737 seats being fitted into long haulers. I flew Thai dated A330-300, didn't particularly felt amazing, but that's decent enough I guess. I flew Garuda's A330-900, felt not too different, but refreshing nonetheless. Boeing widebody operators like ANA fill its 787 with 3-3-3 economy seat layout, giving you 737 seat width for the entire long hours. While ANA compensate you with generous 34" pitch, the same can't be said with China Airlines' 777-300ER with its dreadful 3-4-3 layout. Sitting in the middle, the armrest claim won't give you any extra comfort, since you'll bump shoulders. Someone next to you tries to reach for their pocket, adjusting their seat belts, touching the IFE screen or moving the controllers, you'll feel their shoulders moving about. Sitting next to the aisle will give you repeated galley cart bumps. Why do Boeing operators need these extra 20-30 seats? Are Boeing planes has some efficiency deficit that it desperately tries to address? Kudos to TAP for sticking to standard 2-4-2 layout.
No, is because they add extra money to the airlines. By adding more seat, mean you can push the machine as it's maximum to get the more of it. The 777 and 787 are very wide of fuselage.
Flew TAP a few years ago in one of their A340 from GRU to LIS, I still remember the huge reclination of the economy seats, something out of this world!

This video illustrates the difference between longhaul in a narrowbody vs. widebody. On a widebody, the aircraft can carry more food options so they're less likely to run out of your meal choice. The aircraft also feels more comfortable in the air, especially with regards to turbulence. I flew this same route in January on an A321neo, and I definitely wouldn't describe the service as phenomenal. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. It was average. By the time the service reaches the rear of the aircraft, you're stuck with whatever they have left, and if you're a vegetarian, forget about it. TAP is not a low cost carrier. It's more of a hybrid, legacy in most ways with some low cost habits.
and the Price...? You should try he CPI version, very good indeed, particularly the 4.6 version. I'm just sad that 3.2 Billions from our taxes were burried in that company. Lisbon lives from tourism and that's wrong and unhealthy.
19:50 What the heck? I saw it too! I heard they made new airline and named it ITA, but if I remember correctly their planes are fully blue. Then what's that....
I'm not one of those guys who request flight reviews as if you were solely at our service and had unlimited funds and availability to fly wherever you want at any time, but I have a good reason to suggest you to try one of TAP's routes to Brazil (where due to the same language and many cultural and economic ties, TAP has an impressive market share on European routes and flies to 10 Brazilian destinations, which is unmatched by any other foreign airline). The reason is that most reviews of TAP I see on Brazilian routes are negative (sometimes catastrophic, even in business class), nowhere near the quality you experienced on this flight, and it seems that they concentrate their best efforts on North American routes. The comparison would be interesting to see. (Their only other South American destination is, surprisingly, Caracas, which is basically off-limits to most travelers these days, for sadly obvious reasons.)
Interesting insight. And makes sense too. On the other hand l would have thought the Brazilian routes would command better service, but then, as you mention, it is east to take that route monopoly for granted. Caracas well, whoever is familiar with the situation in Venezuela, will know it is simply a utilitarian route nowadays.
@@thegospelaccordingtoant-an1379, it is not totally a monopoly because two Brazilian airlines fly to Portugal: LATAM Brazil flies São Paulo-Lisbon on the 787-9, and Azul flies from Campinas (near São Paulo) to Lisbon on A330s of various series. But TAP flies from Lisbon to 11 Brazilian airports (I had said 10 above, but I forgot one): São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Salvador, Recife, and Fortaleza on A330s (various series), and to Belém, Natal, and Maceió on the A321LR. All these flights are nonstop (except Maceió, via Natal) and are flown at least 4 times a week (São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are daily). Additionally, TAP flies from Porto nonstop to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro on A330s. So, the competition with Brazilian airlines is disproportionate. TAP also has an impressive European network, so it offers easy connections to destinations throughout Europe, with the added convenience of people speaking Portuguese on board both flights and at the connecting airport. This can be significant: for example, recently I saw a video by a Brazilian lady who lives in Norway, was having a baby, and paid the ticket for her sister to fly from Brazil and help her during the birth and after-birth phase. Her sister doesn't speak a word of any foreign language, only Portuguese, and had never even traveled by plane, let alone internationally, so TAP was really the only option for her. Add competitive fares and you have a recipe for success. But the service is reported to be inconsistent at best, terrible at worst. As for Caracas, in addition to the currently low passenger loads and safety issues for resting crews, foreign airlines have pulled out of there en masse simply because they were unable to be paid in hard currency for the tickets they sold within Venezuela. And while there is a sizable community of Venezuelans with Portuguese ancestry, I doubt that it's enough to fill planes, especially at the moment, when very few of them can afford to travel. Most of the few foreign airlines that still serve Venezuela do so for political reasons (for example, Turkish Airlines flies from Istanbul because Venezuela is an ally of the Erdogan regime, but it's a money-bleeding route, while Venezuela's own Conviasa flies to Moscow, Damascus, and Tehran, but only to Madrid in Western Europe, and even then on planes wet-leased from Spanish charter airline Plus Ultra). I don't think Portugal has any political interest in Venezuela at the moment, so I don't understand what TAP is still doing there.
That is not a problem of the airline itself but also of the brazilian mindset, always complaining about everything. The aircrafts are the same, the crew is the same, only the prices are not the same of the US routes. That is because of the monopoly TAP does have flying to/from Brazil, as they do not need to get new passengers from other airlines, the price tag to/from Brazil is more expensive. But is also, most of the times, the only good airline brazilians have to be in any point of europe, or middle east, with only 2 flights. Otherwise they would have to travel from their city to a major one in Brazil (where other european airline flies to/from), there goes 1 flight, then the transatlantic one and finally the european. SO, with that being said, the price tag is a bit more high but it offers the same product, join that with the middle class brazilian mindset and that is why you have so many negative reviews.

It’s cheap because of the amounts of money the government puts in it to avoid bankruptcy! Over this last years it has been sold and bought by it and Portuguese people are funding it with millions of euros of our taxes!
I love Air Portugal, and it's my favorite airline! But to be honest, flights from Newark to Lisbon or even Newark to Porto are not cheap at all. You can definitely find them much cheaper, especially if you buy them months in advance, or buy them during certain seasons when they aren't expensive. But for the most part, prices range from $1,200 to $1,400 a person in the summer. I've been flying with them for years, lol.
Cheap? Man, they inflate prices so much so that you use Lisbon airport only. The same flight leaving Lisbon to Paris costs 400 euros and it makes stop at Porto airport but if you take the same flight but half way (in Porto) it costs 750euros.

Great report ! Whats the letter font you use in this video?
Long haul on TAP: great!
Short haul on TAP: absolutely underwhelming

You should try he CPI version, very good indeed, particularly the 4.6 version.
I'm just sad that 3.2 Billions from our taxes were burried in that company. Lisbon lives from tourism and that's wrong and unhealthy.
When you were arriving at the gate, did I see a plane with Alitalia livery?
19:50 What the heck? I saw it too! I heard they made new airline and named it ITA, but if I remember correctly their planes are fully blue. Then what's that....
@jeomirit ITA is still in the process of changing the Alitalia liveries to ITA liveries.

Another great flightreport👍 Thanks for sharing again. I just become member, I am gonna to discover your channel. Regards from Rotterdam, Netherlands
@@goytabr There are still half a million of Portuguese , or with a Portuguese passport living in Venezuela and in the last ten years a lot off Venezuelans migrated to Portugal so it's reasonable to maintain the connection.

out of curiosity, did any airport security come tell you off in LIS for taking pictures/videos of the aircrafts?
In Portugal, people have the right to privacy even in public, so if you were "told off" its normal, as it is the law.
what you need to say is: "this is for personal use only, and i can show you I am only taking wide shots and not focus on any one person or any thing".
and let's say you put the video on YT, if someone that is in your video asks, you have to take it down. or blur the person.

At least someone clapped for that smooooooth landing. I think passengers should cultivate that habit, especially on long haul flights, cause a lot goes on in the cockpit for passenger safety which they dont see. Thiugh during de boarding passengers say thanks but as a pilot, hearing an applause also lifts their spirits very much ;).
Thanks for the video. Loved the views❤
Funny how a lot of people say that TaP is cheap when for a lot of us, Portuguese, it is a rather expensive airline.

But. it is sad that the airline has turned this to Buy on board after the pandemic.. Even with the flight more than 3 hours, there is no free drinks. Hope that they could consider again for the free service..

Kinda weird how sometimes everybody claps when the pilot lands. I mean that's his job, it shouldn't be a celebration but whatever 🤷♂️
It’s cheap because of the amounts of money the government puts in it to avoid bankruptcy! Over this last years it has been sold and bought by it and Portuguese people are funding it with millions of euros of our taxes!

They are a really good airline. I've flown with them a few times but I wouldn't say they were cheap. Reasonable if you can find a good deal.
"how can they be so cheap and so phenomenally good?"
Well as a Portuguese born and raised the answer is easy:

TAP could be an outstanding airline, if they were not corrupt and mismanaged. Lately TP has been a nightmare, but I never had a problem with them. As Portuguese, I am proud of my TP aircrafts, pilots and maintenance people, but their ground, onboard, and phone staff can be gruff, snotty and incompetent. Still, they have the best pilots, landings, mechanics and are the 6th safest in the world. Their inflight svc used tb outstanding. It has gone down, but it still is better than most others . We don't want to lose our national carrier, but the chronic mismanagement, and corruption within has almost shut down TP. I hope its financial situation improves.
