Tommy there's a hole in the bumper for the trailer ball and it has a plastic plug there from the factory. however, if you look underneath that is reinforced by that steel plate you were touching with your hand just above the safety chain points.

How reliable is the ZR2, I researched it when it was new and read about a lot of transmission issues, shock issues and a few other problems. Is transmission still a problem . How's the ZR2 doing with high mileage ?
Its a shame you didn't mention payload or towing rating. you guys just don't use those trucks for daily work, and somehow it shows in your reviews. I used to be a fan, but these days I find myself seldom visiting this channel and instead watching more and more the Truck King reviews, they just cover it better , all the stuff I am interested in.
the problem with the g80 is that it requires slip to lock. what you showed here Tommy is exactly why that can be very bad in some scenarios. a tire that is slipping has less grip in ALL directions, not just where the truck is pointed, so you are much more likely to slide sideways into hazards while waiting for the g80 to lock up. Second massive issue you illustrated perfectly here is the oscillating hop that starts happening when you are right at the limit of the g80 locking, that hop will also periodically reduce your grip and make it much more difficult to get over "stepped" obstacles like those razor rocks. the g80 is fine for most consumers who just need a little assistance on maybe a patchy dirt road but you cannot have the same level of confidence as a driver-activated locker.
Also that centrifugal mechanism is prone to failure, especially when the driver goes nuts with spinning the slippage wheel prior to the lockup. So it’s best to be a little gentle when trying to lock it up.
Spare tire hangs too low. 4wd knob could be confused for headlights. Ball mount on bumper instead of a receiver hitch. It’s like GM purposely hamstrings its products.
@@shitloveaduck no argument there, it is still more appearance than function. Just wanted to provide some balance as many here in the comments section seem to be all or nothing in their approach.
They can call it a locker all they want but if the one tire spins and then the other one comes in that's called a limited slip differential it's got clutches in it
@@mikemissouri5152 the one in the video doesn't. It has to be optioned.. weird choice by GM. But order the hitch and it tows 7000lbs with the gas engine, 7500lbs with diesel. ZR2 is 5000lbs either engine.
"Another thumb up for them painted red so you can use them..." Really? You can only use tow hooks if they're painted red? I did not know that. I have black tow hooks on my truck and they seem to work just fine.
OK tell me, I’ve been wheeling for the last 40+ years in a Jeep CJ five and other four-wheel-drive‘s. I don’t understand why the recovery hooks on the front have to be painted red, so you can use them. what difference does it matter as long as they’re rated for recovery or is that how the new ratings are you have to paint them red? I don’t understand that.
Well, it got you and I to comment and that increases "engagement" for the video. Advertisers and RUclips like engagement. If that was the plan, Tommy is a true professional. Actually, I think that it is a running joke intended for his father; in the Cheep Jeep build, his dad wanted them painted red and he wanted them black.
If you read the manual you can cut out a hole in the plastic and add a 2in or 1in ball bolting to the top of the black bar. Think its good for 1500lb trailer and 500lb tongue.
Especially when the Duratracs come standard on the AT4. So really all you get is skid plates, rock rails, factory removed air dam, black wheels and badges and a leveling kit
A lot of hate for this truck... I don't think anyone actually claimed it's a ZR2 competitor. They've made it slightly more off-road worthy than the predecessor All Terrain trim (which I have and love btw), but without the DSSV, stock lift, and lockers of course it can't do everything the ZR2 can. I do agree it's dumb they didn't have a hitch on it. Otherwise, it looks great and will do off-road what probably 90% of people use it for like hunting.
According to the GMC dealership AT4 is just a Denali for "Country Folk" lol. Though, since they brought back the "Hummer" nameplate. Maybe they could solve the lack of ZR2 competition by putting an updated H3T body on a ZR2 frame with a hybrid powertrain. Since the wrangler is getting a plugin hybrid, GMC can beat the Gladiator version to market. It would have to have a removable roof and doors tho.
Low range’s additional wheel torque is a huge benefit. It protects your transmission from being under heavy constant loads and makes that extra torque makes it more controlled by making the throttle easier to modulate 🤦🏻
Trailer hitch is included as the rear bumper has a hole to mount a hitch ball, just look at the bottom of the bumper to see the hole and you need to remove the plug from the bumper top to mount the ball.
8:12 you can see the g80 do it’s job relatively smoothly (especially since it had one wheel in the air and the other tire chocked by a loose rock) looks like tommy felt the truck roll over that loose rock, and then he got spooked and decided to turn around.. i think the truck was ready for more and tommy wasn’t.
also it looks like the traction control was on somehow? if he was in 4low first gear at 50% throttle he would definitely be spinning the tire(s) a little faster than that because tc is turned off in 4L
Those rock sliders are fine for rock sliding. You can even hi-lift jack off of them. I wouldn't use them as rock bashers though. Fuel tank skid plate - I've read that GM feels its not necessary as the fuel tank is mounted above the frame rails. Press the traction control button to turn off basic traction control. Hold it down long to turn off all traction and stability assists.
Did you turn off traction control? I know in the ZR2 you have to hold it down for 10 seconds to actually turn it off. Once off, put it in off-road mode, and keep it in 1st gear. I think it would have made it up with traction control off. The fact you were so far into the throttle and it was cutting power leads me to believe you didn't properly turn off traction control.
There's traction control and stability control. If you just turn off traction control you push the button once and it turns it off. That allows you to spin the tires but not enough to slide the rear end around easily (at least when driving on a normal road). Then if you hold the traction control button down for 7 to 10 seconds it turns off stability control which is what keeps the vehicle driving straight by using breaking and switching power to different wheels. So if you take that off everything just spins as much as possible but with no lockers you're not really helping yourself by sending full un filtered power to the wheels you're just going to do burn outs at that point.
@@dedalliance1 It has a locker. The g80 is a full locker. It's just not selectable. Also, Tommy shouldn't have had traction control on. He said he was at half throttle. Those tires would have been ripping through the dirt.
@@EGGINFOOLS - So you're saying that in order to get the G80 to work in this model you have to do an extra step to ensure you get the wheelspin needed for its' violent engagement while underway? Yeah, that is a much more eloquent solution than just selecting full locked engagement when you want it. 🤣🙄 I've had two G80 GM trucks over the years, and I have a Power Wagon and an 80 series Land Cruiser, both with selectable factory lockers. There is NO COMPARISON in control and finesse between the two methods, PERIOD. Put the G80 in stripper 2wd work trucks.
@@donleamon8653 Who said I said any of that. People like you cant have a conversation and stay in context. I said the g80 is a full locker. Period. As it is designed and marketed as such. The mechanical operation of it proves that. Whether you like it or not is opinion. I like the g80 and I like selectable lockers as well. The extra step to turn on a selectable is the same as turning off traction control. Pretty simple.
Is it not a ball hitch on the bumper? I think he needed to look a little more thoroughly. I would think that helps your departure angle to not skid on a hitch receiver.
If you hold the traction control button in for a couple of seconds it also turns off skid control. Which stops the brakes from holding you back rock climbing or in snow. You would think someone testing off-road vehicles would be familiar with the vehicle they're testing.
@@donleamon8653 Ya but it’s more content which is always good an I’m considering buying the new Ranger Tremor an I want to see how it performs vs other trucks
2 thumbs down for the tow hooks since they are for a street truck that needs a light tow. Those tow hooks would snap off (DANGEROUS) if you get stuck in deep mud or try a snatch recovery. Proper rated "recovery points" are steel brackets that bolt to the frame and will not break under heavy stress or the shock load of a snatch recovery. My 2002 2wd Sonoma had a locker like the G80 and it would not engage if you had low speed wheel spin. On wet or icy roads it would kick the back of the truck sideways. I decided that my next truck would have an "OX" selectable locker that could be on all the time or off on icy roads.
You illustrated the weakness of this compromise well. Full locking diffs are just better in all cases. They may add $500 to the production cost of a $3000 package, but they give real capability rather than fake capability. And at $50 k you are paying a very high price for a modest midsize truck. Thumbs down.
I would go for ISUZU-DMAX (X-terrain) 3.0L turbo-diesel, 187.7 hp 450 Nm-torque (standard rear locker, A-track system, HDCS, tow hitch) anyday of the week over the GMC canyon AT4X.
Good Review man.. So really, the still kinda half-assed it again. It's just less half-assed than before. It's really too bad because it's a nice lookin' truck. Much better looking than the ZR2.
Tried to build this config with the diesel engine. Can’t get this off-road package or black wheels with the diesel, which seems kind dumb, but can spec the skid plates on their own in the AT4 (without the off-road package),
I purchased a new truck 3 weeks ago, when i was looking I was looking at the mid sized truck and i will say from he outside, the Canyon is the best looking truck, Sierra also; however, i passed on GMC and Chevrolet because i found the felt very plastic on the inside while also being very dated on the inside and having a physical key was a hard pass, even my motorcycle is keyless and i prefer just the FOB . I looked at both the Canyon and Sierra Denali and again, both dated interior along with so plastic feeling. I also looked at the RAM and while a nice truck, i ended up getting a new Ford F150 King Ranch. Fits in my garage and a beautiful interior and exterior.
The g80 locks based on rpm not constant slip... it won’t lock if you slowly spin a wheel. You need to spin the wheel hard enough to actuate the mechanism.
@@rodgood exactly. It’s a great on road towing diff though, but in snow it just spins a wheel, and then the locker breaks the other wheel loose when it does couple and makes the rear end unstable. . In sand and mud they worked really well for me since I already have a ton of wheel speed. It sucked at finesse situations with low grip and low wheel speed.
@@rodgood nope, but the dealer told me it was an E locker and it took me a long while to figure out why it had no cables going to it. Because they lied. I had an 06 z71 Silverado. . It was an interesting locker forever ago, but nowadays it’s just a dumb idea. Use the elsd from the Jeep Quadra drive II axle. Both are made by Eaton anyways. . My Quadra drive I grand Cherokee had a similar setup where it used a spinning wheel to energize the clutch pack on all 3 diffs, but it was progressive and seemed to work better. They phased that out for electronic versions that are awesome.
The thing is? Who's going to seriously off-road a new $50,000 pick-up, that's why you have the old Jeep or side by side so don't have to beat up your new Pickup , no matter what it is...
Kind of looks like he just took it off road for the test, right? Not everybody is a hard core off roader. What if I want to do easy trails, snow, dirt and occasional mud but I'm not a rock crawler? What good would it do to provide a ZR2 clone? That already exists. This slots in between Chevy's Z71 and the ZR2.
Hey Tommy, thanks for the review. I love the looks of the canyon the best. I live just outside the San Juans, how will this truck get me over Imogene or Engineer pass? Or colorado trails in general. Thanks!
Work at a GM dealer here in the Midwest and let me tell y’all these were so disappointing not even our owner thought they would sell. Can still count how many we have sold on one hand.
May be that g80 only locks with TC off....i Don't know, i read somewhere though that it acts as a LSD with the ability to "lock" which would be 50-50 split obviously but it wasn't a true locker like the one we used to see in the silverado ...i would have liked a camara in the rear bottom like you sometimes put to see what the wheels where actually doing Definitely didn't seem like a locker, but the truck looks awesome actually
AT4 definitely needs the front and rear lockers. I wouldn't use the DSV shocks though since I'd be lifting it and putting 35s underneath. I didn't pick up the Colorado because the front isn't to my taste. Definitely like the GMC Canyon a lot more. It'll look great with aftermarket high clearance bumpers and a swing out tire carrier. It's too bad traction control can't be turned off.
So at 5:07 you talk about the key. So honestly, you are like most people which causes the issue. The ignition is meant for the key, not for a ring of keys and key chains and whatever else. This damages the ignition tumbler. Also, with the blade keys they stick way out and look like crap and also cause more damage to tumbler again for the same reasons. ..... Having a separate key and fob is actually the best way because you can leave the truck running and then also have the fob with the rest of your keys in your pocket or on a belt loop as I do. This is always better and no noise while driving either. I am in construction and also a firefighter so for me, leaving the truck running and locked while I am near by working is very common for me to do. Even at the gas pump, leave it running but, I have diesel so no static issues here. The other option is push button start which with Jeep for now but other as well, the computer hackers can unlock you vehicle because the key fob is close and then after the push to start, as long as not turning off the vehicle, they can drive it to the chop shop. You find out when you wake up. So far good video until this point. So push button not so great either. Just my point of view and i shop for vehicles that offer this feature of separate keys and fob........

@@eriklee1264 Nope, that has nothing to do with it. The AT4 V6 doesn't come standard with a receiver hitch, only the 3,500LB bumper hitch which is what was shown in the video. The receiver hitch is a $250 option.
Yes you probably are correct but where can you honestly find an AT4 on the lot that won't have a hitch? A truck with no hitch is pretty much worthless.
i didn't read all the comments, but with this off road edition, is the fuel economy less than the standard AT4 with stock air damper? i'd like to remove mine and have seen a balanced number of yes & no of the removal. any help would be appreciated.
While it’s no direct competitor to the TRD Pro and ZR2 it’s still a solid package. Let’s face it 75% of the people buying these trucks by them for looks to cruise around town.
Why won't GMC go all the way when doing an off-road package, like Chevy does? They should come out with an "ATW" package (as in all the way) and do this same vehicle but with more lift, more aggressive suspension, more skid plate, better sliders, manually controlled front and rear lockers and a proper hitch receiver. They can throw in trail control and also a better location for the spare if they want. People would obviously pay for it, because that is what they asked for and the response is still inadequate. Still a really nice truck though.
I drive a 01 Sierra , older 4 wd , I’ve been curious how these newer trucks do in snowy but most importantly icy roads , I don’t like fishing rear end ..

Canyon is supposed to be a slightly more luxurious version than Chevy (like Lincoln vs Ford), so pound for pound GMC always is more expensive... but I fail to see why they deliberately make them less capable than the cheaper sister.
As a ZR2 owner, holding the traction control button for 10 secs turns it off and stops its intrusion. I didn't hear that you did that.
In the canyon or Colorado in 4 low it automatically turns it off and I believe tommy said he was I. 4 low.
Does this on alot of Chevy cars, my 13 Cruze does the same do. I call it "Race Mode" lmao
Tommy there's a hole in the bumper for the trailer ball and it has a plastic plug there from the factory. however, if you look underneath that is reinforced by that steel plate you were touching with your hand just above the safety chain points.
I need to now is this just a normal at4 or is it a extra package for the at4
Nailed the comment at the end Tommy, "Mild to Medium Offroad" capability. Not everyone needs the be all end all. Good job man!
I own the older AT4, I refer it as my Subaru with a low range. I expect nothing approaching jeep-like rock crawling, even sand and mud conditions More built up rigs can do. I explore using common sense, and merely have fun until I think terrain gets too risky and well, thats that. So far, I’m staying stock except removing my air dam. I might change the factory shocks in time. What brand they’ll be who knows? Months ago I tried to go with Fox 2.0 and supplies were not available. Thank you Pandemic.
Everyone gives crap to the g80........... learn how to wheel and give it some skinny peel and it's all good.....
A stock Pro4x is better.
Just having a selectable locker makes it better.
@David Wang true. I'm just saying the Pro4x is better than the Canyon because it has a selectable locker.

Your odds on hitting the gas tank are so low. You have more of a chance smacking your rear shaft.
Spare tire hangs too low. 4wd knob could be confused for headlights. Ball mount on bumper instead of a receiver hitch. It’s like GM purposely hamstrings its products.
To be fair, two of those gripes are remedied with time and option box check mark.
@@shitloveaduck no argument there, it is still more appearance than function. Just wanted to provide some balance as many here in the comments section seem to be all or nothing in their approach.
Yea, that truck just doesn't have the optional tow package
Garbage
They can call it a locker all they want but if the one tire spins and then the other one comes in that's called a limited slip differential it's got clutches in it
Is it fair to say that the AT4 is basically the Z71?
Just buy the ZR2. This truck makes no sense.
Isn’t the ZR2 more expensive?
@@ALMX5DP no it’s not. Which is insane. This truck should be 8k less then a ZR2.
It's makes perfect sense , when you realize that thr AT4 tows 2k more and has a higher payload than thr ZR2.
@@terrencejones9817 good luck. It doesn’t even have a hitch lol.
I've never had an issue with my g80's. They always lock smoothly without really noticing
This is basically just the Colorado Trail Boss package on the Z71. It's a luxury focused truck that does some light offroading pretty well.
It’s a running joke how all the manufacturers are painting tow hooks now to be trendy. And of course color has no baring on function.
Well I must’ve missed that episode and that’s the way it goes.
If you read the manual you can cut out a hole in the plastic and add a 2in or 1in ball bolting to the top of the black bar. Think its good for 1500lb trailer and 500lb tongue.
I feel like you don't get enough for 3 grand. Even retail, sliders, skids, and duratracs don't add up to 3 grand.
Especially when the Duratracs come standard on the AT4. So really all you get is skid plates, rock rails, factory removed air dam, black wheels and badges and a leveling kit
@@OdiesGarage Lol yeah that's about $1600 generously if you include the bed liner.
8:12 you can see the g80 do it’s job relatively smoothly (especially since it had one wheel in the air and the other tire chocked by a loose rock)
looks like tommy felt the truck roll over that loose rock, and then he got spooked and decided to turn around.. i think the truck was ready for more and tommy wasn’t.
also it looks like the traction control was on somehow? if he was in 4low first gear at 50% throttle he would definitely be spinning the tire(s) a little faster than that because tc is turned off in 4L
Black headliner, front and rear traditional lockers no auto 4wd, and tow hitch I would buy
It has regular 4wd...just don't use auto..
@@bsfunk44 makes them weak
A very fare review. For most people this truck hits most of the marks.
Nice truck.
That hitch thing is so GM.....absolutely worthless.....why waste the metal
Is it not a ball hitch on the bumper? I think he needed to look a little more thoroughly. I would think that helps your departure angle to not skid on a hitch receiver.
@@OSUCherokee1 bumper is only rated for 500lbs or something. If you wanted full towing capability, you’d have to option the hitch receiver.
To justify the price probably.
It’s not a GM thing, they simply sent a truck to them without the trailer package. Every brand requires the trailer package option if you want it.
@@Jasmurray87 didn't they have a trailer switch in the cabin?

"locks ... in theory" hahaha! love it
I think your better off with the standard AT4 and pop for the 2.8L diesel. That's what we did.
If you hold the traction control button in for a couple of seconds it also turns off skid control. Which stops the brakes from
holding you back rock climbing or in snow. You would think someone testing off-road vehicles would be familiar with the
vehicle they're testing.

Does the GM line of trucks use torque vectoring? Like the Tundra ?
The rock rails can take the weight of the vehicle, owned a zr2 they were test many time plus put a jack on them.

Glad I have the Zr2! Always liked GMC truck’s over Chevy but not these midsized ones!
You need to spin the wheel hard enough to actuate the mechanism.
ya it digs a hole and then has to climb out of it . not good in sand /mud or snow.
Remember when they were called it the Tic Tok Lockers .because of all the clock like mechanisms inside?
@@rodgood nope, but the dealer told me it was an E locker and it took me a long while to figure out why it had no cables going to it. Because they lied. I had an 06 z71 Silverado.

I do think you guy should buy a Powerwagon or Chevy ZR2 Bison as one of your next long term test vehicles, and modify it after 6 months or so.
Those are the zr2 sliders and GM says they can are strong enough to support the body and people have tested that true.
The thing is? Who's going to seriously off-road a new $50,000 pick-up, that's why you have the old Jeep or side by side so don't have to beat up your new Pickup , no matter what it is...
So moral of story is great truck for someone who doesn't off-road but wants to look cool.

Definitely didn't seem like a locker, but the truck looks awesome actually
AT4 definitely needs the front and rear lockers. I wouldn't use the DSV shocks though since I'd be lifting it and putting 35s underneath.
I didn't pick up the Colorado because the front isn't to my taste. Definitely like the GMC Canyon a lot more. It'll look great with aftermarket high clearance bumpers and a swing out tire carrier. It's too bad traction control can't be turned off.
Totally agree about the front of the Colorado. Canyon looks much better IMO.

I like it. Tough looking.
