I like how you don’t edit your mistakes. You’re so real and genuine. Your videos are so great to watch!
I laughed so hard, holy crap! Been there, done that!
My favourite RUclips channel uploaded a new vid, time to get cosy and hungry 😂❤
@@Leafygreen123right !!!! Hahahah so relatable
I like that too!
😂when he drops egg shell in the mix 🤣priceless reactions ❣️
This is my favourite video so far, the way John is honest is the thing I love the most about his videos and recipes. Preppy Kitchen All The Way!!!
I love a Swiss Roll! My mom used to add leftover coffee to make her chocolate icing for our cakes. Always liked that.
My mom too!!! We add espresso powder to the whipped cream and I love it!!!
@@PreppyKitchenhow much espresso powder?
Chocolate is my weakness ☺️
My mom never made swiss roll, reading your comment makes me feel a bit cheated lol. Otoh, my mom had her hands full trying to grow enough food to feed 9, so only love and respect for her. And now I can make it myself!
@@jaspermartin7444 god bless her she's a true strong woman
Recipe please
When you dropped the rolled-up cake.... We can ALL relate!!💯😂😂💖
You should dust the cake with the cocoa powder then put the towel over it, after put a same size pan on top of the towel and flip the cake. It will make it easier to flip and you won’t get cocoa powder all over your counter/table. Just a helpful tip 😊
Thank you for being so descriptive and detailed about how to fold in the egg whites. Many recipes just say, "mix gently" or "fold in as usual" - your way is super helpful.
I LITERALLY, laughed out loud when dropped the cake!!!! I love the “realness”! Thanks, John!
I screamed 😆
The minute he said, “with confidence and joy in your heart” and then flipped the cake pan, I hit that subscribe button. 😂
Thanks for the heart attack, John! 🤣 I literally screamed when that cake hit the counter!
I'm wondering how many of your fans, me included, would love to see you upload a blooper reel every now & then.
As a swiss roll, I can confirm this is how I was made
John, my husband and I made this together yesterday for my birthday! We had the best time making it, and our guests loved it! Everything about this cake is fantastic, and my kids have already requested it for their upcoming birthdays! Thank you for sharing this - your step-by-step instructions made it easy to follow and gave us the confidence to attempt something we perceived as complicated but was in fact very doable!
My late brother-in-law loved Swiss Rolls. I wish I could have made this cake for him before he passed away.
I freaking love swiss roll more than almost any other cake. I've never met a buttercream or frosting that comes even close to the deliciousness of whipped cream between fluffy, tender, superlight sponge. So delicious!
My mother used to bake from old cookbooks she got on a trip to England in the early 80s and most of them used whipped cream with chocolate brownies and cakes and that's how I like it. I think chocolate icing on chocolate cake is an American trend that has now gone global.
@@mariamtee I was born in the late 70s so the time frame matches up! My mum definitely used buttercream (just the basic, standard stuff, no meringue-based ones etc) but it was never my favourite. However, if you want a cool kids' cake, you have to go with something other than whipped cream. I remember several Barbie dolls wrapped in clingfilm to act as the top half of a "princess" where the cake was the skirt. LOL
Not only do I learn baking techniques, but you are so fun to watch! So educational! So entertaining!
Oh my goodness you honestly just made my day John. I love how real your videos are - cake drop ‘n all! ❤
I made this for a dinner party and it was a huge hit! Extremely airy and smooth. I’ve never made a roll before and it came out perfect!
I love it! The giggles when the cake goes flying. So real! Never change. The cake looks amazing! Yum!
My Mum used to make these Swiss rolls too which I loved the most - so many fond childhood memories YUM 😋
Going to have to try this one.
I love how you explain why you do certain things, techniques, etc. Thank you for sharing this amazing recipe! 🤩
By far…. It is the best video you posted to date!!!!! It is excellent for many different reasons. You educate us in more ways than you probably intended.
I laughed when you dropped the cake. You are so real. At 62 I have definitely had my share of incidents in the kitchen. Just discovered you and love your videos. I made the tortellini soup last night (chicken instead of sausage) and I had your crumble cake with my coffee this morning. Both the soup and cake are delicious! I also ordered your cookbook.
Love love love that you include mistakes because not only does it make me chuckle, it is something I would do! Thank you for showing us how to fix mishaps!
THANKYOU for keeping everything RAW in your videos and NOT editing them to make everything look perfect, clean and organized, because in all reality every one of us watching these videos, is not any of that in our kitchens or restaurants. We drop things, break things, burn things and always always have more powdered sugar outside of our mixers instead of the inside, more than we care to admit 😂 I personally watch your videos and purchased your amazing book, because you are genuine and true to yourself and that relates to many of us.... That is the type of person I want to support....So THANKYOU John for keeping it all REAL xx
Oh my goodness I was so sad when your cake rolled off the cooling rack! Lol! Happy you weren’t too bummed about it and made a new one. I love that you leave in bloopers! 💜
The more I watch your videos, the more I love them. I learn so much! You are the best!
Thank you so much John. your recipes are always great! I hope you always shine❤🌟⭐
This was one of my favorite cooking videos to watch. Thanks for sharing and being authentic!
You definitely need your own cooking show on television! You are up there with the very best of the best!
Great try to save on that cake fumble ! I can’t wait to make this recipe!
I'm ambivalent about the TV show thing. I think that with a show, comes the people who would want to supervise and limit. I like that your presentations are your ideas and done in your way. I would assume you have more freedom as to planning, scheduling etc. It seems as if you have the perfect situation for you and your family. I think you have developed a closeness with us that we wouldn't have with someone on Food Network for example.
Tv is so 20th century; there are more potential viewers on youtube, not to mention more control over the content
TV format is really bad. Its heavily edited, cut down, and watered down
I'm making this right now with my 2 year old boy he loves to bake with me all the time. Thank you John for all your amazing recipes. 🩵
I love this channel. A professional who demonstrates the process as I actually would do it.
I made this the other day. It was lots of fun and even though my cake cracked, it still tasted good. Will definitely try this recipe again. THANK YOU!
Love it, John!! Thank you for your time and talent!!
This looks absolutely scrumptious and I can’t wait to try it! Thank you for sharing it and for letting us see your boo-boo! Happens to all of us. I make a German Chocolate roll up cake and the one thing I do differently than you is that I do not powder my towel. As soon as the cake comes out of the oven, I powder the cake, place the towel over it, (confidently) flip it onto my working space and proceed to roll it like you do. For me, it seems to create less of a dusting mess and in the end, it comes out the same!
Excellent tip. I'm planning to try this cake tomorrow and, while I like being able to prep the towel beforehand, I think for the sake of my kitchen, I'd rather try to avoid the cocoa plume that John created. Thanks!
This tip saved me from a huge mess thank you
Love your transparency when you make mistakes and don't hide it.
Thank you for making this video. I have always wanted to tackle a roll cake but was intimidated to do so. However, after seeing how easy it is to make a roll cake, I am so going to try this tomorrow. Thanks John.😀
Yaaaaaasss!!!! Love love loved when you dropped the cake omg. LOVE YOU for leaving that in the final product, you are AWESOME. Made me smile and made me an even bigger fan. ❤
I'll definitely be giving this a try! ❤️
I love how genuine you are! Watching you have goofs too makes me feel better about myself. 😁 This looks so yummy. ❤
I’ve made this twice now, thank you so much for sharing
John, you are so down to earth real. I enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing. This cake looks amazing.
one of my favorite cakes if it ever shows up! You make every recipe so fun and enjoyable to understand how to make it better, techniques etc, and just being yourself. Thanks for a fun video! 😲😁
I have so many recipes I have to make of yours John. Everything just looks so delicious!!
I agree , his recipes are the best
I made the pumpkin roll at Thanksgiving and everybody loved it so I made a bunch as Christmas gifts for my kids and their families. I want to make this with my grandkids when they come back over.
Aww those memories will stay with them forever 🥰
I absolutely love Swiss roll cakes so I’ll have to try this recipe 😊
So I was busy making this recipe earlier today, and I found a hack if you can't cover your mixer with a towel when mixing the cake batter with flour and powders (I don't have a stand mixer but used an electric). Just mix the powders into the yolk batter with a spoon before mixing to prevent the powders from flying everywhere.
Ooh! Love the special effects!
I’ve made it so many times. It’s the best! It’s super light and my absolute fav. I make one every month.
The chef delivers the recipes easy to follow, practical, and results have been reliable and great. From him I learned to make tiramisu without any hassle, and the end result was a delicious dessert.
It looks like the adult gourmet version of those little store-bought dessert cakes. Yum.
I love this man. You give the best instructions ever !!! I will sit and watch all your videos hour after hour. Following along and taking notes ❤️👍🏽👍🏽
I can't get over how awesome your burner knobs are!
You’re awesome, John! I absolutely love watching your videos! Thank you for your knowledge and playful personality❤️
I don't know what looks more delicious - the cake, or the host.
I just love watching you! You are fabulous!
I just made this and it turned out perfect! Thank you for your recipes and your instructions.
John is soooo funny !!! 'Gotta love the bloopers !
Thanks Judy!
I watched for the first time and loved how honest he is MashaAllah
this is such an awesome video with how genuine John was with the mishaps because we have all been there before
My favorite !!! Thanks for all your tips ! Already lost my mind !!
Brotha, you are quickly becoming my Go-To resource for all things in the baking world. Whenever I want to impress my wife with a fancy new dessert, I find myself here soaking up some inspiration and direction. Thank you, sir.
This has been my craving my whole pregnancy!! Now I can make them at home thank you!!!🥰
Love your videos. I made cakes for 50 years. I add about 1/2 cup meringue powder to my buttercream icing. Gives it a marvelous tang that tones down/enhances the sweetness. Marvelous flavor!!
Love you love you love you!!! You’re the best! ❤️❤️❤️
Looks fabulous! I have made this before with strawberries.
I never made a roll cake before and watching your video inspired me. Made it for my colleagues at work and everyone raved about it. Trying the pumpkin roll today. Thank you. ❤ 👍👏
Absolutely love your videos!! Thanks so much 😊
That fall was the best thing I’ve ever seen in a demo video! These things really happen in the kitchen, I love how you laughed it off
Oh yes! We understand how delicious it is. Superb!
Sacrificial egg whites describes it exquisitely!
Yummy! Loved the tea towel technique and all the tips! ❤
Your videos are the best John,I LOVE IT!
Omg John! When I saw that pan going I inhaled deeply. I almost lost my breath. And…..John with the save!🎉🎉🎉🎉 Why is it that EVERY time I watch one of your videos I almost drown in saliva?🤣😂 That ganache waterfall….I just heard the heavens open up and sing….🎤🎼🎵🎶 ((Ahhhhhhhhhh)). Tfs. Have a wonderful day.🤗
It came out perfect and so beautiful and yummy!!

I can't wait to make this... I made the chocolate chip bars last night... they are amazing :) but so is the sock it to me cake ( I've made 4x), peanut butter blossoms, pancakes, brownies, snickerdoodles... absolutely love your videos!
I tried this recipe and the result was amazing. Thank you very much
Looks beautiful and delicious! Thank you.
Im so making this ! And I think you are so wonderful !!! Thank you !
I've got to try that. It looks amazing!! Thanks
Amazing chef you are, very real🤩
God bless you my dear❤️you’re my go to for recipes
When it came time to incorporate the egg whites into the rest of the batter, my Mom would always only use a hand whisk. Add some whites to the chocolate mixture. Gently scoop up some of the whites and some chocolate batter, lift the whisk and gently tap or shake the whisk once or twice to let some of the combined portions drop gently. Keep doing this scoop-fold and use the wires to gently mix the whites and the cake together until they are combined. It is a gentle process, not a big stir, so the air stays in the whites. I have to make this now as I have had a craving for chocolate cake for days.
Need a Video to go along with your instructions! My egg whites always flatten when I use the usual folding method
@@Babka113 I couldn't find a video with a quick search on RUclips of folding in egg whites with a whisk instead of using the spatula, but one chef started with using the whisk to move some egg whites over to the batter but then he switched to the spatula again. Drat.
All you have to do is use a hand whisk instead of a spatula and fold and roll the whisk in the batter. Sometimes you need to gently tap the whisk against the side of the bowl to knock out the unmixed parts trapped inside the hand whisk and continue rolling and folding until it is all incorporated.
I've only ever seen my Mom do this and it made sense to me since all of her baking was exceptional. Once you try it that way you'll wonder why people keep using a spatula when a hand whisk blends it quicker. At the end, you might need one scrape with the spatula along the bowl's bottom and sides. Good luck.

Here is a folding technique video using a wire whisk at the 3 minute 30 second mark (This world-famous cake melts in mouth! Fast and tasty! Cake for Christmas!) is the YTube title in case the link does not work. I should have guessed it would be in a German cooking video. I was searching for more chocolate roll recipes and thought of you. They also use a spatula at times and are really rough with the batter but my Mom was very gentle when mixing it.
I will probably use John's recipe since it uses fewer eggs but will roll it like the other video on a piece of new parchment paper instead of messing up a towel with cocoa powder - I'm just too lazy to wash that cocoa out by hand later. Will also use John's filling and ganache.
It’s making my mouth water. I am going to make this. I hope it turns out. Thank you.
Beautiful cake Thank God 👍👍👍
Its so delicious.
Woooow that looks Amazing! I absolutely love this recipe! Thanks for sharing!
I tried this yesterday and it was amazing
Thank you so much ..I'm so excited to try and know preppy kitchen recipe will be flop proof and yummy
Love Swiss Roll!!! Divine!
Thank you finally a Swiss roll with folded in egg whites! Thanks 🙏 😊
That look delicious
I love that you included the mishap, things like that happens to me so many times in the kitchen and I am always so hard on myself when it does...
Happy New Year John to your family 2023. I made your pancakes. I will never eat Ihop or any box stuff ever again. I tell everyone to see your recipe. I want to make this roll soon. Thank you 😊
Love it I'll definitely try it ❤
