  • First flight to the "Rock" in almost a year. Shot with a DJI Phantom 4Pro at 4K 60fps. Came back 2 more times after this day. Those videos will also be uploaded.
Make sure to also check out the Wave, Status and surf video of Tillamook Rock Lighthouse.
    Thanks for watching.
Update: Koin 6 out of Portland Oregon did a story on Tillamook Lighthouse and featured some of my Drone footage in their story.

Your Video of my "home for 19 months" was spectacular! so many memories came flooding back, the drone hovered over the east doorway entry and I could see a little inside. To the left inside the doorway was the keeper Oswald Allik's office and to the right inside the doorway was his room. Mine was the next room to his, and he would periodically pause outside my door when I played concerto music on my violin, which he liked but HATED when I played country or "fiddle music". Thanks for the trip down memory lane. ---- Lon Haynes

Lon Haynes I'm honored sir! I just uploaded another video of Tilly. Its a "status" video, made out 3 flights that have more details of her current condition. To include photos of the inside of the front door (had to adjust contrast). You can see the base of the stairs.
I'm honored that a keeper of Tilly viewed my video's.
      Thank you, Sir.

Why is the house so large

    • @egypthobby
      @egypthobby 6 лет назад +6

Lonnie Nicholson light houses needed there own power generator that took up room. Also they when thesecof shore light houses were first made they had to keep plenty of supplies to last months at times as sometimes with weather or season it could be hard to have regular suppiles

It’s my dream to sometime in the future see this lighthouse restored and have proper care. It would be tough but it would be an amazing thing to see like tours to there a few times a day, or even turn some of the old rooms in there into some form of hotel. But to think, in a decade or 2 this building could collapse due to deterioration. It’s always been a dream of mine to find a way into the island just to look inside. It saddens me seeing how much she is deteriorating compared to many other lighthouses. Such a shame. But I digress, amazing video keep up the good work

I just flew my Mavic Pro there today and the whole rock is covered with sea lions! I think the head winds must have been strong because I consumed about 45% of the battery on the way there. I got a warning to start heading back right away, which prevented me from taking any proper video and photos. The experience was thrilling though and I hope to try again very soon!

The best spot to fly from is the headland. Just hike up from Indian head beach and you will find a few launch points. Ecola is a long flight with little time over the rock.

Thank you SO much for sharing your footage will all of us! About five years ago, I discovered the story of the lighthouse and fell into deep fascination with it. (I even wrote a poem about it.) I've seen it twice from shore (I live in Idaho) and always wanted to see it up close. I'd love to visit in person, but doubt I'll have the opportunity unless I owned it or were on a crew. I guess this is the next best thing. :)

Wonderful flying and a great video. It is my understanding that a company had the rights to use the lighthouse as a columbarium. For a fee you could have your loved ones remains interred there as "Honorary Lighthouse Keepers". But the interment only consisted of placing the urn or vessel on a shelf inside with little protection. Eventually the elements and vandals scattered the remains and the company lost the right to continue the practice.

      Thank you,
Everytime I flew I had very slight wind coming from the ocean. That way I knew I would have a Tail Wind on the return. I would land around 25% remaining.
I would normally on the P4P have about 10 minutes at the rock. You can greatly extend your loiter time by launching from Tillamook Head 1.3 miles vs Ecola Park. 2.4 miles.
Be cautious if launching from Ecola that it might be calm there but windy past the headlands.
I always check my level when I arrive to see how bad the wind at the rock is vs on the mainland.
Just launch on a calm day. If you must lunch in a calm wind make sure its a headwind heading out so its a tail coming home and you should be fine.
DO NOT FLY THERE when the birds come back to nest. Its dangerous and Illegal to disturb them. I always fly in the winter.

Ya, they had too many people fly around haystack to close when the birds where there. They ruined it for the rest of us.
I always did my flights off season from the bird's nesting season. There are at least 3 crashed drones on haystack as far as I know.
I have some friends who live on the beach and Ill just take off from their property next time.
Try launching from Tillamook head. You will get better battery when you get to Tilly. DON'T fly around or near the rock if they are nesting. Fly on a nice sunny day in the winter (all mine are winter).

Its a little over a mile from there vs the 2.4 mile from where I launched from.

    • @leachman74

The official range of my aircraft is a little over a mile, but with an after market antenna mod, I've seen them get pushed out to over 3 miles. If I do ever get to fly it, I'll get to it from closest point as possible, so it will be Tillamook Head. This would definitely push the limits, but places like this are exactly what I'm looking for. I currently live in Texas but in a few months we plan on moving to Washington State, when we do this will be one of my first outings. You guys got so many terrific places to fly in the PNW, can't wait until I get the chance. Here's my RUclips channel, ruclips.net/channel/UCCLXght4ihx2iV7RZjdxS1w I'm still pretty new to the droning hobby but now I'm getting more comfortable with my drone, so i'm looking forward to pushing the limits. Thanks for sharing.

Great video! I am heading down that way soon, and am looking for cool places to fly my Mavic 2 Pro. In researching the rules, I am seeing that there are a lot of restrictions, especially around rocks and islands - like staying at least 500 feet away. Reading through your comments, I see that you were flying when no birds were present, so definitely adhering to the SPIRIT of the law. I always try to stay as legal as possible, largely to set a good example and not give drone pilots a bad name (oh yeah, and to avoid that whole fine thing, too).
Based on your comments, I am not going to fly out to the lighthouse this time. I will come back when the birds are gone. Do you happen to know what their season is there? Also, can you recommend any other good places to get some good video? Where did you launch from for this video? Is that place still okay to fly from?
Thanks again for posting this video. I liked your caption about the wind tunnel in the doorway. It was like a ghost saying, "Stay back!"

    • @GeistView
      @GeistView  5 лет назад

If you are trying to stay as legal as possible then you will not be flying along most of the Oregon coast because of its class as a marine sanctuary.
That being said I fly when the birds are not present and if they are I keep my distance and work with the video in post to crop in on the 4K. I also look to see if the Drone is disturbing the animals on Tilly as I'm flying if it looks like they are disturbed I stop and come back another day. There are times I've gone out there and it's just full of birds and it's too dangerous. Ecola park does not have a no-drone regulation or ordinance. That video was launched from Ecola Park (Large parking lot area). I now fly from the vicinity of Indian Head up on the trail for Tillamook Head (45°56'05.3"N 123°59'01.3"W). From the main parking area, it's about a 4-5 min 1-way flight to Tilly from the location above its about 2 min one way. It's a great spot to fly from gives you great LOS and signal. The only issue is if you fly in a slight breeze realize you will have a huge wall of wind on the cliff face from the breeze hitting the cliff and going up. Nothing really crazy but expect you might need to hand catch (I always hand catch there) and the drone will be tossed around a bit. You can also go up high and go over the wall of wind and come back down. Think an air door to keep out flies.
I've always had a great experience with people on that trail. They love to see the live video and seeing Tilly close up.
I understand the intent of the law but also recognize that it was written for helicopters and fixed-wing buzzing the rock scaring the animals and getting too close. There was one video of a clown buzzing the seal's on Tilly and Ieft him a nasty comment on his video.

@@GeistView So, we came over for a little holiday Oregon Coast stay this week. I took my M2P out to Ecola Park on the outside chance that things would fall into place. They did! No rain, light winds, warm temps (50's) and thanks to the shot of cortisone I got in my knee the day before we left, I was able to hike up to the coordinates you were nice enough to share with relatively little pain.
Your spot was great! I was mostly after photos, but did shoot a little video. It was not well planned out, and not nearly as cool as the ones you have posted, but it was really cool flying out there. I spent most of my battery on photos, and got some good ones, so the video was quick and dirty. I have posted the first batch of photos from there and Heceta Head on my Instagram page at @skycam509 and a video from Tilly here: ruclips.net/video/dyph0smloUs/видео.html
Thanks again for your help. I never would have found that spot without you. Like you mentioned, I ended up with several hikers watching the iPad over my shoulder. They loved it!

Sir, please tell me which tank was used for drinking water storage and which tank for fuel storage. I will be grateful, thank you.

That was the 25,000 gallon freshwater cistern used for the fog horns. Rain water would be collected on the main building roof and directed via pipes to that tank. The fog horns used about 200 gallons of fresh water a hour to operate.

It had one cistern the one on the North Side made out of brick (looks like a hump). Under the "porch" were like a basement. The metal tanks were removed by the current owner as part of a renovation since they were rusting away. They use to hold fresh water and fuel for the generators.
