Another trick is to cut a slot down the centre of the bolt and then collapse it in a little to help it retread it self,👍 luv the videos guys, yeah make it all look so easy.

Don’t fit the satchel...it looks daft!! 😃😃 Those strange moulding shapes might be to allow for the side bag thing to hang over the side because they clip on the roof rail. I was looking at our local demonstrator yesterday which has “everything” on it. Putting a box on the side is only going to clonk a few lampposts , gates, maybe a pedestrian...useful in the jungle but a thundering nuisance in Waitrose! Have you had any reaction from JLR over these duff instructions??? The fittings for the mud flaps and these rails seem hard work! Good work men...always a joy to watch !!!😀😀😀😀😀😀

I had the rails factory fit.
Same kink in the rubber gaiter - exactly as you have it. However, I also have the sliding panoramic sun roof. Consequently, there’s an additional gutter/join in the roof panels that runs laterally across the car and terminates half way along the kinked section. I wonder whether the roof rail gaiter flares out, sitting outside the roof gutter to provide some form of link with the cross-roof join.
Given that the flared section doesn’t cover the entire alpine window, doesn’t come close to the roof rack attachments nor foul the pannier/ladder, I can only conclude it has something to do with the panoramic roof panels (unless there’s something in LR’s future product pipeline than will require it).
About to attempt to remove my rear bumper to fit recovery eyes - saving me nearly £400 of dealer labour! Thank you!

    • @L663

The V8 uses the same bodyshell and all the fittings are there - the only reason ( I think ) that they don't recommend roof rails is that they have not tested them on the V8 ( faster acceleration / braking forces etc )

I'm sure a great deal of engineering has gone into these roof rails, from the initial drawings to the final production, involving a lot of manufacturing processes. I doubt these are cheap to buy but LR are not going to sell millions of them so they have to be priced accordingly. At least they are available to purchase and fit, how many other makes are doing such an amount of after market add-on's, you have to admire LR's after sales support, even if some of the instructions are a bit dubious. I'll probably buy a 90 when there are a few second hand. I can't be asked to suffer the huge first purchase road tax figure. I'll still keep my 2015 110 XS though.

I would prefer aftermarket accessories where you can get them. I had a factory bullbar on my Discovery and hit a kangaroo. While it protected the radiator the panels and headlight were taken out. Having hit another roo with an ARB bar it is chalk and cheese. LR isn’t alone in this, most manufacturers accessories are made to a price. Some factory accessories are good but the aftermarket is by far the best option.

    • @arthurpage3175

If you put the silicone on the top of the bolt thread rather than roughly round the hole in the roof you should be able to have silicone seal without contaminating the thread lock. I know its a "Defender" but it makes me cringe to see tools laid on the painted surface, anybody would think you were in a dealer workshop. Lay something soft on the panel to put the bolts and tools on, at least for the first few months.

I notice that you are finding quite a few instructions errors / missing instructions while you are doing these videos. I do hope that you are documenting these and reporting the errors back to JLR. Often instruction manuals are written by professional manual writers whon have never done the job themselves and they are checked by someone who may know the vehicle but has never had to do the job - so things get missed.
I often have to check manuals for a German comany I am associated with - the manuals have been translated into English and i have to check the English translation. However, I *do* know the product intimately and often find many errors. Recently I found that something very obvious was described in unnessessary detail and something else, very important, was describes in so little detail that the reader did not know what to do. I ended up re-writing the manual so much that they had to go back and re-do the German original.
In the case of the Defender roof rails I would have said about the M6 bolt at the back - "this needs to be removed in order to remove the base. It is not needed to fix the roof rail but needs to be re-inserted after removal of the base to act as a water seal. It is advisable to smear some silicon before re-insertion of the bolt to ensure a water-tight seal" (or words to tat effect).
Also - regarding cross-thraeding I wold have added a caution note - "please note that the bolts are aluminium and do not rust. To avoid the risk of cross-threading it is important that the bolts are verticle before insertion. It is advaisble to back off 1 "click" before turning to make sure that the threads properly engage" (or words to that effect) - I woiul also add a bit about being a water seal and adding a smear of silicon before insertion.
I really do find your videos excellent and you have inspired me (in an earlier video) to replace the ailing rear hatch gas struts on my 4x4 and also my wife's car - made a big difference, thank you. And I do hope that JLR do listen to you and will update all the instruction manuals when you find these obvious errors.
