  • In this video we have a go at fitting the genuine Land Rover roof rack cross bars on our new 2020 Land Rover Defender. Its pretty straight forward but as ever Land Rover seem to make it a little more complex than is perhaps needed. The part number for these roof cross bars is VPLER0178 ( Defender 110 ) and VPLER0179 ( Defender 90 ).

    Fitted mine today after watching this video a couple of times. I didnt take the end caps off, I just took the keys out and moved the casing over the top. seems to work and didnt fall down.
    I fitted them on my own which meant it took longer as had to keep shuffling sides. It was pretty easy though so thanks for the video.

    Excellent video, as always, Simon. JLR really should be paying you, as you are finding all the faults in their dodgy instructions as you fit the accessories so they can update the instructions. Or - they coulkd give me a free Defender and I will go through all the instructiions and correctr them for them ;-)

    Better to get Thule evo bars and the 753 feet with 3040 fit kit. Updated t slot allows use without having to cut the rubber piece and since bars extend beyond feet they are a lot more useful. Also slightly lower.

    Hey Simon, great job! I drive a Defender 130 and I really want to keep its original look without adding too many external accessories that might increase wind noise. However, I'm thinking about installing an awning that I can easily attach and remove. My Defender has a panoramic sunroof and a small moonroof at the back for the 3rd-row seats. I've been searching for a solution to mount an ARB awning without any visible crossbars on the roof windows, so the family and I can still enjoy the open sky. I've looked into the Thule WingBar Edge, but I'm not completely sold on it. Do you have any suggestions or insights? Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

    I doubt its for vortex disruption looks more like for load grip. The question is how noisy are they when you're doing 70 mph? Every roof bar I have ever purchased looks nice but always introduces a lot of noise. They are more aerodynamic than the ones I have and I wonder how much difference it makes.

    Technical question Simon....... I don’t like driving around with my roof bars on if there is nothing to carry........ is it ok to use the big key thing to unscrew the bit that goes “click” when correctly tightened or is it a case of once the cross bars are on, that’s it you aren’t ever meant to take them off again? Reason for wanting to take them off is also because I have the opening panoramic roof and if you tilt the rear edge open it sits just about under the front crossbar and whistles - no problem with the roof fully open, the whistle stops. I haven’t noticed any significant increase in fuel consumption running with them on for the last 2 month too.

    • @L663
      @L663  4 года назад

      I took the bara off straight after the video and they came off fine... i cant see what makes the click noise... and not sure if they will click again but they are designed to go on and off the car so i think you should be fine. Let me know if you want me to double check tomorrow.

      Thanks, I collected mine from the dealers this morning after 3 days in the workshop tracing the rainwater leak, which hopefully is now cured by replacement of the fixed section of the window on the door and they have cured numerous rattles. I asked the service technician about removal of the bars too and about the click and was told to use the big Allen key thing to unscrew the hold down screw, the bars are designed to be removed and replaced multiple times. Now my problem is I cannot find the 4 keys.............. they’ve been on my kitchen counter for weeks, I must have tidied them away to somewhere for safe keeping......

      Thanks for the kind offer Simon, this morning I’ve found that for some reason (old age possibly!) I had put one key onto each key ring for my TDi300 Defender 90 instead of the rings for the new one. The key number is stamped on the bit of the lock barrel that isn’t covered by the plastic finisher so I took the old Defender key rings out to new car and tested and now all OK. As an aside the tow / recovery eye trim finishers are now installed on mine and it looks finished now! Why a premium car maker like LR hasn’t added finishers (they do for roof rail systems that you cannot see once the rails are fitted) to the kit is beyond me.

    Always fun to watch.
    I have to confess the instructions and orientation of the sticker seem to make sense to me (obviously the way my brain’s wired).
    The arrow on the sticker points to itself (“this is me”). It’s located at the front on the LHS as you sit in the vehicle. Or the right (sorry, I mean correct) side.
    Question: I’m looking to buy some T-bolt lashing eyes that I can fix to my roof rack (which, I assume, is the same profile as the bars). Frontrunner make some good ones but the nut seems to be too deep for the LR channel. Have you come across any that LR may have used on previous vehicles (if they’ve stuck with the same dimensions)?

    • @alantd44
      @alantd44 4 года назад

      I do. It has a frame, 6 cross bars and a rear treat-plate area. Each of the cross bars is profiled like the roof bars you fitted and has a T-slot channel with the ‘aero’ vortex-defying rubber insert 👍
      I have to say that the combination of the roof rack and the ladder (which is amazing by the way) is excellent. Used in anger quite a lot now. The only drawbacks are that the bars are made of the same anodised aluminium that you have on the bars - which scratches really easily - and there’s no way to tie things down laterally (hence the desire for eyelets that can be locked into the T-slot). Ideally the eyelets would be fitted with a rubber gasket to stop them damaging the aluminium surface.
      One quick note: when you’re fitting it, make sure you use a long enough socket. It’s clear that the dealer who fitted mine didn’t and they’ve scuffed the paint off the frame in nice circular marks where their drill has rubbed. You’ll see what I mean.
