This game was genuinely just complete and total ass. Most if not all the people who were constantly asking for this would've 100% bought it if it weren't rushed soulless slop. Same with Starfox Zero.

Spinoff Marios are looking like Sonic games. Every year they have to release one no matter what. But Nintendo knows it can't lose its polishing reputation like Sega, so they just put the minimum content possible, so it doesn't have any delays because of polishing.
You underestimate just how much the gear impacts the game. You wanna min-max the characters stats or mitigate their weaknesses. For example a too low strength level will mean that a single uncharged tackle will take the ball away from you. Waluigi and Pauline for example will max out on Strength and Speed to become the most powerful defensive options on slot 4. Rosalina already had high shooting so increasing her stat even more meant noticeably more easily secured goals. And speed is the most important stat in the competitive scene. All that counteracts the games multiplayer design in which you can only bring one character into a club and rely on the picks of your other club members.
Oh yes, the game where the online test gave you the entire game to play. That's not a compliment, this dogshit is painfully barebones. Which is to say, it's a Mario sports game on Nintendo switch.
You can be glad that you didn't try out the Multiplayer Mode. It's horrible. You can host your own football club (allowing you to choose a name, your stadium, customization and two jersey colors), but you have to hope that a bunch of other people join it (which is not gonna happen). OR you join another club and have no saying in the decisions whatsoever. Every club member can then choose to bring in one of their characters with their respective gear into the club. And when you play a match you have to choose 4 characters, meaning 3 of them have to be the ones from other club members (which are often shitty choices as the gear contradicts their play style). You cannot pick the same selection twice, even if it's Toad, Yoshi or Shy Guy. But you can select multiple selections of the same characters so e.g. 4 Bowser teams are possible if your club has them. It's so restrictive and limiting on purpose, making you miss out on even the little content this game has by choice. Overall a very frustrating time and I have no idea how the game design department messed up so bad. You really can't screw up that hard not on purpose
