- Lana made another great album, but it wasn't what I thought it would be. Plus...lots of Harry Nilsson talk. @LanaDelRey @HarryNilssonVEVO

no, she did not disappoint
The grandfather line is her asking the spirit of her grandfather to watch over her father while he’s fishing. I think she emphasizes him standing on his shoulders so his presence feels heavy and real. She’s also asking for God to send her 3 white butterflies which represents the spirit of her grandfather, grandmother, and uncle. She mentions in the song that she sings for herself, not for the industry. Singing is what she’s passionate about. Fishing is what her father is passionate about. I think the songs is just her asking for the spirits of her loved ones to watch over her and her family and give them guidance while they do the things they love.
In Taco Truck x VB, the Lanita line is an inside joke between her and her fan base, nothing to take seriously, it’s just a silly nickname they’ve given to her
also, her dad its making an album Lost At Sea, i think shes doing a reference for his new music, the same way her dad had watch over her and her career, he will need his dad to do that too (prob critically or whatever)
Right? I’m surprised the line needs explaining. So many people have never heard of “having an angel on your shoulder”.
Lanita is the diminutive form of Lana in Spanish. Considering the Taco title it makes sense haha.
My favorite on the album. Her voice in her plea for a sign is one of the most beautiful things I have heard. Her voice just calms my mind and feel at ease.
I wish grandfather song was called “three white butterflies”. With that long title, the song is not appreciated
Time has changed. Artists don’t need to kill themselves anymore for their mental health problems. Lana singing is her therapy. Her bringing up old artists allow us to be curious about the classic musicians
This! It’s raw
I saw someone on twitter saying that the whole album is a tunnel, she's slowly entering the tunnel and the moment where she is in the middle of this tunnel are kintsugi and fingertips, as they are two of her saddest songs. Then she leaves the tunnel with Paris, Texas she knows it is time to go, and as she arrives to the end of the tunnel the songs are happier, grandfather, let the light in, margaret, fishtailn etc..
Love your interpretation Romane. Thumbs up 👍
I felt like the 'cackling' during that celeb preacher interlude was a choice... and a significant one. If she had presented that over-the-top histrionic sermon without comment, it would have felt like a full throated endorsement of that particular flavor of religiosity. But her cackling in the background introduces a layer of ambiguity: Are we taking this dude seriously? Are we mocking him? Are we doing a bit of both? I feel like that ambiguity feeds into (as you described) the mixed/vacillating tone of the album. Anyway, loved the review!
“And you’re not gonna like this, but I’m gonna tell you the truth. I’ve discovered my preaching is mostly about me” Lana writes for herself, not for the music industry, not for fans, not for money, not for fame.
I thought that Interlude was quite amazing despite what most others say
@@MarinaAndTheDevil same and it was so needed in the context of the album it really fit well
This album, for me, represents all the best features of her previous albums - i got Ultraviolence, NFR, COCC, BB and Honeymoon vibes in different tracks and this kind of mixture did please my ears. This is the most personal album she has ever written and lyrics in The Grants and Fingertips, for instance, hit me hard. As usual, not all songs became my favourite, but this is a ttpical situation for Lana's albums. I remember i didn't like UV and NFR at first listen, but now i can literally call them masterpieces and my favorite albums of hers. This album will surely become a classic, just give it a time, listen to it in the dark,in the earphones, and shall the beauty of this album be revealed for ya
I thought the same that it was very much her revisiting her old sounds rather than trying something completely new, but I didn't get UV at all cause to me that album is very electric guitar heavy and idk if I got that vibe from this album. So I'm curious what is your take on that cause I definetly saw the similarities with the other records but I was like "where's UV?"
It can also be that Ultraviolence is like one of my fave albums of all time and in my delusion nothing can compare to it cause it's so unique 😂
@Javier let the light in was originally made for ultraviolence, it was written back in 2013 during the tropico sessions aswell as the second half of American whore
That's not Lana singing, that's Elizabeth and I'm so here for it
it's funny that i did as much like you've said in this video. I went to listen to Harry nillssen and watch that movie Paris,Texas right after lana's new album was out. And I fell in love with Nelson' music immediately. so thank lana for introducing me more good music. By the way in my opinion the grandfather standing thing is kinda like grandfather's spirit (or should I say ghost) protecting his son while the son was doing some dangerous work. I'm not an native English speaker so pardon me if I've said something wrong. Thank you for sharing your reviews❤
I feel like lana putting Venice bitch's original demo as the closer to the album is the ultimate power move because its a consider her best song by many and finally she's not building worlds (which is something she said about Nfr in an interview), she's showing her own inner world to us. Also lanita is the nickname many of her latino fans have given her because she's really popular in south America. She also said she speaks Spanish with her Spanish speaking friends.
She did not dissapoint. Yes it's a self indulgent mess but it has a LOT of great songs and I think it's an improvement on her last two LP's
It was my first time listening to her and I'm not disappointed either. It could have done without the long interlude of a pastor talking and she could've cut out a song or 2 but overall it's a very beautiful album.
This album brought me back to Lana since NFR, Blue Banisters just didn’t do it for me and Chemtrails was only okay. The record felt like one big personal statement that only Lana is meant to understand but anyone who was able connect was a side effect
That's why Lana wrote this line, "They say there's irony in the music, it's a tragedy, I see nothing Greek in it." She represented Nilsson in her way, I think.
The VB part of Taco Truck is an earlier version of the song "Venice Bitch" from her album Normal Fucking Rockwell and wasn't created for this album.
Hey Skye, you really should listen to Father John Misty’s album Pure Comedy. He is probably not more of an LA artist than Nilsson but he is very much up there and that album is the reason why. It also happens to be one of the most formative pieces of media I have ever engaged with and I think you will find the album very interesting. Please!
She is singing about Lake Placid when she refers to the “North Country”
loved the vid! 18:06
kinda super curious of
if you're familiar with
the music of demis
roussos.
Had to skip around cause i couldn’t go through this video fully. Lol it felt like an ADHD rollercoaster!
I do have some comments on his closing statement. For the conclusion of the album, isn’t having fun (like the end of Taco Truck x VB) letting the light in? I wouldn’t say she’s destroying herself, but rather enjoying her time… Thr chaotic ending sounds like she’s just having fun and giving no fucks tbh.
Also, the Lanita name is a nickname - it’s an inside joke fans would/should know about by now. It’s not some Spanish name Lana made up for herself. To dive deeper to why we call her that is because Lana speaks Spanish, was sent to Spain at age 14/15, so we call her our “Latina Queen.” I emphasize this is not to be taken seriously, it’s a joke
Ok, our language has a latin root, such as french, portuguese, italian…buttt-no one here in Spain say or call Latin@ to other people. You have a point but I personally think that has more to do with Mexican/Latin American “culture” and stuff and also all those gangster films, Al Pacino, Scarface and all that
@@Dave-vb4nd crap! sorry! i didn’t mean to correlate Spain with Latin@.
To clarify, I meant to say the reason why she knows Spanish was because she stayed in Spain. thus when latin@ fans found out she speaks Spanish, we started just dubbing her as “Latina Queen” and “Lanita” for jokes - and she’s playing along with it.
@@lazerreyz9903 don’t apologize for this :))
Good communication is the best !
I love your reviews! I'm going to watch both of those movies now :)
it's not disappointing at all mr lady
I was also a bit dissappointed there was not much more A&W kinda vibe on there in the beggining. The minimalist sombre part was so beautifully haunting though I still got hooked. I don't mind the self-indulgence, quite the opposite actually as I tend to hyperfixate on certain things wanting to get the most of it and she provided just that. I know I'll be listening and coming back to this album for a long time, each discovering something new I'll reflect on or get inspired by for sure.
Album of the year in my opinion
Taco truck 😂 was my favourite song lol. She got sick because she was kissing her bf while he got Covid. Lol. Message of the album is to let her live her life.
It’s a great album. To understand the album, look at the bigger picture or the net effect of her music, particularly the earlier stuff. There’s a whole generation of kids, that were listening to her when they were 15. Those girls are now 25, and in need of direction. She basically convinced a whole generation of young women to want nothing more that a sugar daddy. I think she realized this on her own, but I think that’s what caused the change and motivates this production. Watch some 25 year old women reviewing this album, crying as they do so, and I think you will get the bigger picture behind it.
You got all the details down. Good video and good album.
great review as always, the structure and style of your videos is enthralling
Very comprehensive review. I always enjoy your philosophical musings on the artists you cover, and Lana's was no exception. I have liked much from every album, but I'm most fond of the debut and _NFR._ This one ranks third. I didn't think anybody could be a bigger fan of Harry Nilsson's than I, though, but you have me beat. As for the Peppers, my enjoyment began with _Freaky Styley,_ and ended with _BSSM.
God I am so happy I found your channel !!
A&W was only one of three singles. Two of the three were representative of the tone of the album. Can’t imagine why you thought the one single would represent the majority of it. I disagree with your review, and I think it’s unfair for you to say an album disappointed you because it didn’t live up to an expectation you imagined on your own. Also calling Lana an aging hot mess is pretty condescending and misogynistic.
EDIT : Oh boy. Here come all the guys to explain to me about “um, actually it WASNT misogynistic and as a man I’m here to tell you exactly why, you a woman, should understand that. Fascinating responses here fellas.
Did you watch the whole video?
Yes, regrettably I did watch the entire poorly structured, ADHD hot mess of a misogynistic hour of a man in love with his own voice talking about everything under the sun but the album :)
@acacia9447 Bit reductionist, I think he had a lot of interesting things to say about the album's influences and the stage where Lana is at in her life. To each their own. I liked ur Ethel Cain pdf tho!
@@Oudri125 I mean, I don’t think I have to write a war and peace style detailed review about all the ways he clearly didn’t even have a game plan before he started recording.
Yay, though! I’m glad you liked it! I’m so excited to see what his wrap up video for the album will be like.
@acacia9447 I do agree it definitely wasn't very planned out, but I assume it's just the kind the content he prefers to make. And yesss same, your contribution defo made that whole album reaction series a lot more comprehensive!
Bro, some of these thoughts you gotta keep to yourself 💀💀💀 lmao I love your videos dude you always speak the facts but in a dad way
i disagree i enjoy the tangents
Cause he is a dad...
I can confirm that the sounds of Lana in the Judah Smith interlude sound like our mother high, but the way that it is intentionally produced and mixed I feel that it is more of a comment on the sermon. Wow Jon Batiste is a phenomenal musician on Candy Necklace.
What do you mean about James Bond?
There’s a lot of somber, minor key piano songs that Musically remind me of Elliott
Smith’s Waltz number one. Maybe it’s the guitar player in me but I like the Father John Misty collab the best in addition to the singles that were released prior to the release of the record. I enjoy it, 16 tracks feels a bit lengthy to me for some reason. We all understand Nilsson is talented. I'm not sure her small reference merited that much Nilsson discussion.
Very much appreciated the review, learned a lot and definitely missed a ton of stuff you picked up on in my initial listen through.
In regards to the final track, what I think you missed is essentially her unapologetic "although it seems I've gotten better, I can be violent, too." I think she is upset about some of the critical reception regarding her expressing her genuine self and is basically making a sort of diss track about it. Really though I think she is just standing up for herself and saying she will stay the same. "Before you talk let me stop what you're saying--I know, I know, I know that you hate me."
This reminds me of a part from "Dark but just a game" from Chemtrails:
We keep changing all the time/ the best ones lost their minds/ but I'm not going to change/ I'll stay the same
In the spirit of staying true to herself, I think she returns to Venice Bitch, which is her longest and arguably best track off her best album Norman Fucking Rockwell. You get a remix of a very relaxed song that takes its time. You get "signing off bang bang kiss kiss" which is a reference to a 2005 film in which a criminal is mistaken for a Hollywood actor and trains under a private detective as part of preparing for a film role. She makes "signing off bang bang kiss kiss" the final words of the album because she, much like this song, is out of place now. She is just this person who is in this role in the spotlight that isn't who she feels she really is. She expresses herself and gets shot down and so now she is done editing her stuff down to please people.
professor. you’re so babygirl
Idk some comments this guy says are very head-scratching to the point it’s very condescending - very “mansplaining” vibes.
like his comments on the A&W video about how he thinks Lana goes for troubled men like him made me cringe… it’s borderline narcissistic at this point. glad he likes the music, but like stay within the context of what the video is about.
Brilliant review! I have a feeling lots of people here did not watch the full video and just jumped to conclusions. I don't think you came off as misogynistic at all, but rather knowledgeable about what music means to people in general
I think he should've researched into the album
Thanks for a great review. It sent me back to Norman F Rockwell… what a great album!
I'm sorry guys i wont be commenting on this review
I could see Lana learning something about herself from watching your videos, they're so insightful lol
Certainly she already knows she's childless, aging, and a 'hot mess'
The review is 57 minutes and 20 seconds long :)
I did not like the album at first, for it not living up to the expectation level anchored by A&W. Listening to it after hearing your analysis was a completely new experience in a good way! Thank you!!
dude ur my favorite male white reviewer because ur the first smart one i’ve seen
Prof you can't end on a cliffhanger. Did we know that there is what??
Judah from Bojack! Yessss
great review
Masterful album, no disappointments here. It is a little long, if I'm going to critique anything. Cutting the Judah Smith Interlude and Taco Truck x VB to make a 14-track record might have been the sweet spot. But otherwise, the lyric writing, vocals and stately production on this album blow me away.
Venice Bitch was a reference to & sample of her own song of the same name, off her album NFR. So it makes sense the song didn't fit with the album, it was a throw-in for fans.
Lol no its not it ends the album to show she's reverting back to her old ways, a theme that is throughout the entire album. She even adds things like "dont die dont die!" into it. Honestly this album is incredible and gets better evrrytime i listen.
@@lucan9750 Everything you said can be true along with everything I said. You're not contradicting anything I stated.
Why can't they watch James Bond? lol
Great album, albeit a slight mixed bag. The trio of Paris, Texas, Grandfather… and Let The Light Me just blow me away.
Omg !!! Taco truck the worst song ? Woah
VB is a call back to her song Venice bitch from her record Norman Fucking Rockwell !
I’m not sure why she brought that particular track back but I definitely think it’s deeper than just a crimson and clover reference haha
Do you know your Myers-Briggs personality type?
Hard disagree on the later Nilsson albums. I personally love hearing the strain through his jacked up vocal cords in songs like Many Rivers to Cross or That is All. Still an unbelievable singer and adds even more character IMO
Never imagined you talking about gay cruising spots 😭😂😂
fingertips is the best song on the album!
Outside of the music criticism, Judah Smith being a celebrity's go to pastor/borderline cult guru breaks the notion that the entertainment industry is this "liberal agenda" institution when traditional ones still exist and adapt to the times
What do you mean by not letting your daughter watching James Bond ?
TECHNICALLY Margaret is about Antonoff's fiancé
Completely missing the context and meaning of Taco Truck.
I was disappointed as its said to be better than NFR and for me it isnt. But its still got a good half a dozen good songs on that have plenty room to grow. So still a good album.
i feel like you need to pull up the lyrics on Genius
Day 101 of Asking you to Review the song Achilles Come Down by Gang of youth.
Great video Skye. I love Lana’s music but I do kinda wish she drastically changes her production on the next album to shake things up. Her last few albums whilst beautifully written are very similar sonically
This is a tough watch… 9:30 in & got no idea what you’re rambling about
I love fingertips, it’s one of my favorite songs on the album, I don’t know why she called it a “not a good song” when kintsugi is right there
Please review the new ZelooperZ album "Microphone Fiend". ZelooperZ is one of the most interesting rappers out rn
I loved this video
I don't think it should be up to the listen to hold an album to some imagined "standard" based off of a single or two. It is HER work, not yours. You are just the listener. You are powerless.
I dont think she's cackling at the useless preacher track that any sane person will skip after hearing twice same with the other long interlude. I think she's laughing at a line he probably visibly made a cue to as a yuk yuk comment that would only come across if it was a visual aide of his sermon. Its fire and brimstone audio doesnt make it clear why she's laughing at all. I'm uninitiated to the joys of Nilsson but delved briefly today and give me some John Denver please.
I love this new Lana album, the best after NFR. I felt the previous two, Chemtrails over the Country Club and Blue Banisters, were a bit of a letdown and a step back in her songwriting approach.
Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd is the most complex Lana record, and it will require a few listenings before fully appreciating it.
I thought this was a review about Lana Del Rey, not about Harry Nilson...
You’re the best professor
personally i was.. the singles + hype made me expect so much more. it's a great album, but bloated and sluggish
no she didnt
It’s not NFR, which was her best work to date, but it’s certainly a stand alone piece, and definitely better that the last 2 off cuts. Yet to know if it’s as disappointing as the last 2 were.
Yes on this album she did disappoint
To quote you: I will leave a very long comment. Only you know how long it is.
About the Judah Smith Interlude: there is so much music out there that plays with ambiguity. David Bowie, one of my all-time favorite singer-songwriters, was politically ambiguous in his album covers/interviews/lyrics(the ambiguity sometimes hinted at even extreme positions), but it's something I have always tollerated.
Many artists make references to their beliefs or express opinions on a wide variety of topics, and in my opinion it is good that the artist always speaks his or her mind. Whether you like the way this is done or not is another matter.
What I personally find reprehensible is when illiberal messages are explicitly inserted, or that messages are quoted that are not themselves illiberal, but by people who are, and that this copy/paste is not filtered through irony/sarcasm.
Now ... the Judah Smith Interlude is a copy/paste of a creepy Beverly Hills guru who has expressed strongly illiberal views over time. The fact that Lana Del Rey copies/pastes what he says, laughs condesciendingly at it, and reinforces his sermon with comments, that bothers me. There's nothing I can do about it, but it also makes me suspicious of the artist: why do such copy-pasting? To publicize the guru? To be controversial and get more discussion about her album? I don't know, maybe none of that. But even if the intention was to frame that 'preach about me' as a vision of her entire work, it still seems tasteless to me.
On the album in general: for me a bit disappointing, maybe the annoyance of that interlude also contributes. But this minimalism throughout the entire album made the work flat and sometimes boring.
The song with Father John Misty, on the other hand, is a great collaboration. He is also one of my all-time favorite songwriters (I don't think I'm exagerating). If you are curious, I highly recommend the albums I' Love You Honeybear' and 'God's Favorite Customer' . Lyrically, these two albums (and also Pure Comedy) differ greatly from Harry Nillson's.
i mean lana del rey has dated cops and was doing public book signing events in 2020 (maybe 2021???) with masks that were more hole than surface material and alongside her numerous ,,,, suspicious comments on racial issues i can safely say that lana either doesn't think about politics to the point of farce or is just kinda reactionary-leaning. and i appreciate the room in ambiguity for satire versus endorsement in using clips like the judah smith interlude! one of my fav bands, godspeed you! black emperor, did that a lot on their first two albums and EP but the difference was that gy!be not only publicly professed themselves as anarchists and did activism in their private lives (to the point of being stopped by the TSA in 2003 bc the tsa thought they were terrorists lol), but the formulation of the band themselves is also somewhat anarchist, with an emphasis on community and the collective and a lack of hierarchies in instruments alongside even small things like not having many if any official photos with their faces visible. in contrast i would personally argue that no matter the personal inclination of the pop star, the formulation of the pop star as a leader with a sub-hierarchical team of writers, musicians, marketers, and so forth while trying to trick you into not believing that that is so is kind of inherently reactionary (im very aware that's a hot take and im not saying ppl are reactionary for liking pop stars to be clear, but those are my personal thoughts). and as such when i compare gy!be and lana del rey both using illiberal american weirdos as field recordings in their music, i get two very distinct and different vibes. hope that this comment makes any sense lol and hope you have a good day!
@@smidlem1117 I dont know the gy!be, so I don't comment on them. In general, for me, it simply depends on one's sensibility whether to welcome certain messages or not.
For my sensibility, a lot depends on 'how' an artist conveys a political message: some times I appreciate it (e.g., Tom Waits - a song might be Road To Peace -), other times I don't (e.g., Pearl Jam - Bushleaguer song - even though I grew up and love Pearl Jam).
Again for my sensibility, sometimes I find the message intollerable (e.g: CCCP, an Italian communist band, or Oi! punk bands) because I, as a person who believes strongly in liberal values, am intollerant only with the intollerant.
On Lana.. it is possible as you say that she doesn't thinks about politics and maybe she don't know even who this guru is and what he has stated in the past, but I doubt it since I read 1 minute ago that she is part of his "congregation". Especially the fact that it is a copy and paste bothered me when I listened to the album.
Let me be clear, I am in no way comparing Lana to the Oi!! bands, because that would make no sense at all of course. I'm just saying that for my personal taste, I don't appreciate what she did.
She goes to one of those rich people churches that Bieber also attends. She mentions her pastor in one other song on this album. I hope she isn't getting brainwashed by some fake religious guru
kinda rude tbh
would love if you made a video about nilsson's discography, perhaps a best to worst type thing? :)
She ate
5:56 we come for the thoughts on the record but we stay for they Skye lore. Did you know he makes his kids pancakes every Saturday morning?
Sunday morning...
As a 4th gen from LA this album is just the rambling of a non LA native spoiled girl. I love her voice & tones but it’s laughable garbage.
Kermit 😭
very disappointed by this video and many of the things you said, unsubscribing to someone i once thought was a brilliant youtuber. oh well
It's funny that the best song on the record is not fitting with the theme of the record. And that the theme is not very close to coming off as persuasive, but aspirational and uncertain itself.
While I won’t watch this full video because it’s too long (and I’m in NYC!) I definitely think this album was a disappointment. Sooooo many boring ballads. If she would’ve taken off 4 of the slow boring songs (honestly don’t know which 4 as the middle of this album is totally unmemorable) and added 2 bangers than this album would’ve been perfect imo.
Remove the last two songs, remove the two interludes, and move Margaret to the closing track and you have a masterpiece.
100% disagree with you. they all make this album what it is and they all have meaning.
Tacko truck is a perfect closer if u understand the meanung behind of it
Idk but Peppers really did it for me
*last three songs but other than that I completely agree. This album could have given NFR! a run for its money if it ended with Margaret and didn’t have the interludes (in particular the Judah Smith one).
@@f4gsforpele ur also wrong! good job!
