Finally, someone with common sense in the comments to an Anthony Fantano video!
Sometimes it does open up a new perspective on aspects of music when you read or watch a review making you relisten and realise the flaws or the good aspects in that album I don't think that's necessarily bad.
I think it’s fine to have a review influence your opinion. After all, why listen to a review at all if you’re unwilling to have your opinion changed. But I do agree with you that you shouldn’t feel like someone’s review threatens your own opinions if you disagree with someone’s reasoning behind a review or opinion.

Let’s Argue: Saying “Your review is invalid because you don’t get what ‘X’ artist was going for” is a cheap way to try to take away the validity of someone’s opinion on a record. Most music fans have the basic rudimentary skills to deduce what they like, and don’t like, REGARDLESS of knowing what the artist was “going for”. Melon didn’t dislike Swimming because he’s out of touch, he just didn’t like the record that much, and that’s okay.
But he literally said it was "emotionally vacant" in his review. He literally had no clue what was going on within the record.
There's a huge difference between "I dislike this" and "this is bad." You don't need to know what an artist is trying to do to say you didn't enjoy it, but if you're saying something's bad, you're saying it failed on what it was trying to achieve or it just didn't work as a concept, and if so, you have to understand what said intention was.

I really loved that album. I really love all of Arctic Monkeys work. Favourite band of all time for me. Thought AM def deserved better.
AM was fucking dope. The only reason people don’t like it is bc it went a new direction and towards a direction of rock that hasn’t really been taken. Joshua Hommes production on it was amazing and was definitely a step back up after suck it and see.

Johnny Jiggman I think it’s a good take. I think if you get even more expiremental than Death Grips, it is pretty much you TRYING to be different. 100 Gecs tries SUPER hard to be different, where as Death Grips gets EXTREMELY experimental, while also being able to actually like the music.
Even the care for me explaination was short and vague lol. I'm on board with most of Fantanos reviews and I'm not a guy who gets too butthurt about someone not liking something I liked, but that Saba review was straight lazy and disappointing. He's given way worse albums way longer breakdowns than that.

I think a 5 is a number or two too low but going back and listening to it after Virtual Self and Nurture it’s super clear that he has improved, and if I’m going to call those projects maybe an 8 or 9 I have to dock Worlds for being a little more amateur.
I also think it hasn’t aged particularly well, or at least as well as Nurture will. I can still get down do some of the tracks but they seem so “of their time” and feel dated already, where the new material from him sounds so much more conceptual and innovative. Also how I feel about Good Faith from Madeon vs his old music. I think it will be a much more important album for him.

Carrie and Lowell was on constant repeat when I was working through a shitty breakup three years after it was released, and Mr. Fantano not recognizing that in his review is way beyond the pale.
My go to album when I just got to get all my horrible emotions out.

Being a critic is an odd pursuit. I like Anthony’s personality, articulation and production which is, weirdly why I watch these videos but as far as music is concerned, it’s completely subjective and I can’t say I’ve bought or not bought an album, based on a review or critical analysis. To be fair, Anthony does caveat his videos with the fact that it’s his opinion!
It's weird how people project their own elitism and "my opinion is objective" takes onto him and then say he's either alternatively objectively wrong (the mental gymnastics at play being incredible) or again, an elitist
I like Anthony cause I just find him entertaining and he has introduced me to a lot of great music. But I think it’s really annoying when people take his ratings so seriously. There’s many albums I love that he hates and I don’t really care that much.

As much of a meme that is, I for one agree with that review. I don't get all the hype about it, there are a few bangers like power that I can't deny, but other than that the compositions are pretty meh, and the mastering is horrible, I don't care what Kanye or Mike Dean say the digital artifacts on that album sound horrible, it being an artistic choice doesn't change that.

I think he's done acknowledging that review forever, good for him, everything that's needed to be said about it has been said. It's my favorite album but Anthony didn't love it, it's fine.

Agree with the Carrie and Lowell gripe. That album is one of the most beautifully written collection of songs I've heard for as long as I can remember. Wven if you don't end up as emotionally attached to it as some other people, you should at least be able to appreciate the sheer level of songwriting and lyricism.
Why again? It pales so much in comparison to Seven Swans, or really any of his other work. Its beautiful, but that beautiful. Its leaning on the subject matter way too much.
@@TRENKROM Agree to disagree :) I love his other work, but for me Carrie and Lowell is a culmination of all I love about his former albums. The production is beautiful but reserved; the songs are perfectly paced and never too long; the ambient links between songs are gorgeous and (again) understated. I think it feels like a creatively more mature album than anything he's done in the past. It took him from a great artist, in my estimations, to my favourite living artist.
I love Seven Swans but I prefer the rich production of C & L. I engineer a lot and always find myself wondering how on earth they got such beautiful sounds. For me it's a perfect album, but I appreciate that you and I will have different tastes. I don't, however, agree in any way that it leans on the subject matter too much. @@amremorse What I mean is that its beautiful because the subject matter is beautiful, not because the lyricism or sound is particularly amazing.
People keep saying its too one dimensional but i think this is a somewhat surface level analysis of the music (not even getting into the subject matter right now). I personally think the song writing is just as varied and dynamic as other sufjan records, but in a more restrained and refined way. I love the album because it is intricate but understated, and not over done, preferring delicate and simple arrangements to unnecessary complexity. I truly find it to be sufjan's best work, taking all the power of his various previous works and distilling it. It's sufjan at his most intimate, both lyrically and musically speaking, and i think the criticism that it is one dimensional comes from comparing it with some of his more theatrical and over the top work.
I've always had a chip on my shoulder for you since I saw your 5/10 review of The Raven That Refused to Sing where you said it had "shoestring" production values.

He didn’t review it, but the way he dismissed Architects’ Holy Hell was as if he was describing a pierce the veil record. Holy Hell is not about fist pumping metal, it is about grief and acts as a sendoff to the bands previous lead guitarist, written by his brother. If Melon went in with a more open mind, he might have found a golden record which has become one of the most acclaimed and influential metal albums of the last decade.

I think while you're right: a lot of men do listen to Mitski, a LOT of her music is best understood under the AFAB context. Class of 2013 and Washing Machine Heart really hit hard for a lot of women and AFAB people.

Whenever Anthony discusses The Ooz, he never mentions the lyrics and I'm wondering why? It's really the crux of the album. The instrumentals meander in order to put the spotlight on what he's saying--like a folk singer who repeats a basic chord progression as they tell a story. I'm wondering if Anthony's ditestment for King Krule comes from a negligence towards Archie's (rather poetic) lyricism.
Him and many reviewers like him avoid lyrics and song writing when they can. Its about production first and style second. Technicality and lyricism come up last.
Lyrics will always be second to music unless you're talking about literal poetry. Not even the best lyrics can save a song that's not sonically compelling. Dylan, Cohen, Reed, etc...they all sound good/cool first and foremost.
P.S. I have never listened to this Krule album in my life, for all I know it sounds great.
I don't see why this should be the case. Like if I reviewed Mount Eerie's "A Crow Looked At Me" and argued that it wasn't very self-produced, most people--critics included--would say that I missed the point. Sometimes, other elements take priority.

Melon is trolling if he seriously thinks Unknown Memory wasn’t an influential album. It’s not the most influential album in the world obviously but within the genres of cloud rap and subsequently emo rap Lean essentially moulded the sound into what it is. Do remember that many current popular rap acts have history with yl. You really think Travis Scott and Carti would sound the way they do today if Lean never existed? Again UM is not as influential as something like live love asap but you’re taking the piss if you can’t see the influence sbe has had.

I still think the Hozier self-titled review was a bit unfair; I definitely understood quite a few of the critiques, but "emotionless vocals" is where i was lost. obviously I personally disagree, but it also goes against the more common descriptions of his voice. vocals are my focus for most artists, and his are some of the few that can bring me to tears. keep doin what you do tho melon

Your worst review is easily The Weeknd's House of Balloons. Forgetting even your opinion's on it, it's how factually wrong you are on it, like calling him a 'band' and saying 'how much autotune there is over it.'
That fact checking is excusable cuz no one knew if it was a band or person. But review was trash.
When the lowest critic review was a 7 and most were 8 or 9 out of 10, I'm not saying he should comform to their reviews, but I wish he would've taken another look at this album from a different pint of view or something. I just don't get how the lyricism alone hurt the mixtape that bad. And even then there were some of the best lyrics of the Weeknd's discography on it

I totally agree there's a lot of filler on Hurry Up, We're Dreaming, but I think the highs of that album are wayyy better than they're given credit for here. I have nothing to back that up lol but it sounds heavenly on a quiet night
