You really should check out The Idler Wheel..., I consider this album an evolution, that rawness you're speaking about really started there, I think.

It definitely began on The Idler Wheel. That's why I love that album so much. I feel like FTBC is just the more abrasive playful sister to that record.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Fetch the Bolt Cutters is an enormous expansion on Hot Knife and a couple others from Idler Wheel.

    • @liteflightify
      @liteflightify 2 года назад

@@Missjunebugfreak I used to feel that way. But now, I realize how different both albums are and how they really should be appreciated separately, instead of always thrown together. FTBC is indeed rawer and more odd. But it’s also an album obsessed with time and how Fiona feels she relates to other people and the world. The Idler Wheel was much more inward focused. While production wise, this album plays much more with vocal and percussive layering and awkward time signatures. Yes, compared to the rest of her discography these last two albums are starkly different from the rest. But they’re also starkly different compared to each other. I do think she started to find that sound and freedom with The Idler Wheel.

@@liteflightify that's why I think they fit together in context
Because during idler fiona was in a dark place and I was too so that album really resonated with me
But at first fetch didn't catch my attention as much because unlike fiona I hadn't evolved from that place yet BUT as of now I'm doing better and this whole album means so much more to me than ever
This album is very triumphant finally dealing and raising your voice against all the wrongs life has done you a new perspective a metamorphosis while still being connected to your true self and finding solidarity among others
I think that really shows the evolution and connects the two together atleast for me personally

I normally really really don't like music reviews, but I love your video! and it's not because I agree with everything you said and not because I'm a huge Fiona Apple fan. Your passion for the music really shines through, and you seem to be acutely infatuated with the concept and for music in general. A lot of music channel do their reviews in quite of a mechanical manner where they seem to be like "aight let's get it over with this one". I also love your love and acceptance of nuance. Some want for her music to be prim and primed; immaculate and insincere. I'd describe it as if I were to paint a portrait of myself, and decided not to leave out the pimples and imperfections. You're getting an honest and raw reflection of who she is and how she sees things, and that's the beauty of it.

Great review! But you missed the most important and easily recognizable theme of this album (for most critics review and per Fiona's confirmation on interviews): her politics. Sure, she talks about heartbreak and she even mentions him by name both on this and her last album but this album is deeply rooted in her views of womanhood and community and trauma. And assault. And yes, rape. You dismissed her fantastic line about rape as just weird. Perhaps you haven't been better acquainted with her music and her use of personal anecdote, specially on darker tones, but Fiona is an assault survivor and has written music about it multiple times, most notably on Sullen Girl from her first album. This album is mostly about the #metoo movement. About sharing trauma and healing together. About frustrations and the loss of control. This is a deeply political record. This is why it is resonating so much for critics and her audience in these times of isolation and political polarity. This is not a break up album. I encourage you to do more reading on this! Keep up the work :)

Rape and sexual assault is a fundamentally universal experience for women. During the #metoo movement men were shocked at how many women in their social circle had been assaulted, at how much women were in self defense mode just walking to their freaking car. Spousal rape is a real thing and is usually dismissed by men as not a real thing. Look, every sexual encounter requires consent. If not given, continuing the act is sexual assault. Period.

Before I go, I have a question for you. Don't you think the impact of "Fetch..." matches the impact of "Kid A" when it came out. You listened to it and you know that you are in another realm, you have the goose bumps, but maybe they are an afterglow from the goosebumps that are stored from you once you reach the genius of it. I think the bigger picture is often missed by a lot of critics/commentators. I would have never known this whole project was originally an homage to her home. Basically every moment of growth (whether it be romantically, politically, or just existential) is attributed to her home. In an interview (i think it was Vulture?) she explained how her home was the womb from which she was born into a mature woman. Think of the complete album as a metaphor for her home (womb), and her performance as "coming out of the womb."
Then again, everybody has different methods of consuming this type of media. I knew going in that there was no way I would be able to understand Fiona upon first listen without following along with the lyrics. Fiona's writing is, perhaps, what makes her such a powerhouse of an artist, so focusing on sound first, thoughts second is not going to do her (or ourselves) any justice. I cannot tell you how many times the songwriting alone caused a physical reaction in me (mostly stupidly smiling to some punchline).
In my opinion, this is the best release of 2020 so far. The only low point in this album happened right at the middle with 'Newspaper', and even then I wouldn't consider it to be a bad track at all. It definitely deserves all the acclaim it received.

My bday is 9/11/77, and I’ve always felt like I was on the same journey as her, with a two day lead (experiencing all the same global events at the same age in my own life, etc.). We’re Virgos, I absolutely relate to her as far as politics, I play piano (independent of ever having heard of her), am a singer/songwriter, experience heartbreak in the same way, etc. It’s hard to describe but I guess you get it. Adore her first album, but her second is my favorite. The new one is raw, angry, and doesn’t hold back and I respect the shit out of it, even if it isn’t so much a sing-a-long as some of her others.
One of the most chilling moments on FTBC is in “Relay”, at the end, where it goes into a sort of tribal, ritualistic bit where she says “I’m sorry” and is clearly fulfilling the setup. She’s passing that evil torch in that moment. Also, who would have thought we’d have new music from Fiona Apple and Trent Reznor delivered to us in our time of global self-isolation? Fantastic.

It's about the girls, something she couldn't do until now. The breakups with guys are just the background for her to travel through her relationships with women , that's why Shameika.

Thanks for the compliment on the review. I really respect Fantano, though I did think his review of this album missed the point a bit.

I’d rather hear your dogs than this album. I liked her first three albums, but Idler and this one with her doing Yoko impersonations is over my head.

Fiona is the female Tom Waits. A genius who just gets better with time. By the way, I generally hate singer songwriters who play piano. Boring, formulaic, cliched themes, pretentious crap. Probably because I’ve heard Fiona Apple and none come close. Like a worm trying to catch a comet.

It seems that you don't like my style and that's totally cool. I don't have a script or a rating system and instead I just sort of talk and share my thoughts. Fortunately there are tons of other channels out there that get to the point! Thanks for giving this a shot and give me a try again sometime if you are interested in longer form / more tangentially philosophical takes on new music.

PSRR, nice response except for the "tangentially philosophical" oxymoronic ending.

Professor Skye's Record Review He’s well spoken and knows a decent amount about music and loves this great album. And he’s sexy as hell. He can drone on if he likes.
