    Huge Criticism: If you're going to bring up how you should turn the battery off before disassembling the joy con, mention it in the beginning of the video and not near the end. My left joy con no longer connects simultaneously with the right one, and I'm certain the reason why was because I dismantled it while the battery was still on.

      always disconnect power in anything you are disassembling, #1 step in every eletronic disassembly

  • @Mr.SisterFister859
    @Mr.SisterFister859 Год назад +13

    Hey, I work in IT break fix(among other things IT) if it hasnt been beaten to death yet.
    ALWAYS turn off the power and disconnect any power source before full disassembly as to prevent shock to yourself and the board which will cause a host of problems.
    DO NOT do this or other disassembly on carpet for similar causes above and ground yourself.
    Use AN OBNOXIOUS AMOUNT OF LIGHT and a magnifier to always see what you're doing.
    Count screws and map them bc 1 size does not fit all and can break the barrel and will not reassemble correctly.
    And thats my Ted Talk. I hope these basics might help.

    PSA: Watch video fully before you do the repair. Some edits are super quick and you can miss a step and rip a ribbon cable! It's a helpful video but definitely one you need to pause/rewind at points :)

    • @SaveMeRIV
      @SaveMeRIV 3 года назад +4

      Agreed. This was the "top" video RUclips showed me, I didn't rip a cable, but I didn't have to disconnect them in the first place, which another video instructed (wish I had seen THAT one first) and ribbon cables are the bane of my existence, since I have giant hands.

    • @jp410
      @jp410 Год назад +1

      Yes, ribbon cable part is given short shrift. Unclear what to do, what to look for. My solution is... look for a different video with a more precise presentation.

    My little girl dropped the left joy-con and everything worked except the joystick would not click left, to replace it would have cost £60, I have no experience with electronics what so ever but after watching this video I thought I would give it a go. A complete novice like me replaced the broken joystick in about ten minutes with this video. Absolutely brilliant.....Thankyou!!!

  • @smwad7103
    @smwad7103 Год назад +1

    This was super helpful. I didn’t even disconnect any of the ribbon cables other than the ones for the sticks themselves.(wouldn’t recommend unless your willing to risk a break) and it went pretty smooth hardest part was reconnecting the antenna but that was mostly due to my super cheap plastic tweezers. But yeah absolutely better than shipping them off to Nintendo for who knows how long or dropping $80 for a new pair.

    At 1:35 - can anyone tell me what this ribbon cable is for? Replacing a buddy's batteries, all went smoothly (no ripped cables lol). This *looks* like it's for an antenna, but it certainly isn't the main antenna. After a cursory glance on Google, I can't find a diagram for all the replacement parts to reverse-engineer what this might be.

    My ribbon cable of the right joycon ( the one that connects the button and seal the slot of the battery) is too short and doesn't make me grab it with pinchers due to the small room and the fact that it's twisted and goes backwards inside the slot. I'm stucked there. Any idea?

    • @breathedarlingokay

      hi! i can help by saying, if the issue with the joycons having the joysticks they came with wear out was just with the *joystick*, then it could be possible a different joystick from a different manufacturer may wear out less when you replace it. but i would say, they seem pretty delicate so after a certain amount of use they will likely still need to be replaced. it depends how often you use them

    thank you so much, especially for linking the kit! i replaced the joystick on the right hand side of my precious animal crossing joycon and will save the other one for if and when the left one breaks.
    one thing, i could not see what or where the "latch" was to release the ribbon cables, so i did not figure it out where it was until i was already done ^_^""
    that given, it is possible to replace it without removing all of the ribbon cables. the only required one was the one connected to the old/new joystick. albeit probably easier than the left one, i was able to turn and maneuver the inside plastic part with the very delicate ribbon cable attached without removing it. i simply worked around the plastic pieces with the ribbon cables still connected for ease of putting it back together and not bothering with reattaching them again later (as you said you had trouble with that).
    maybe it just works better if you have small hands ^_^""
    would not recommend risking breaking the ribbon cables, but it is possible!
    thank you for this video! very straightforward. i was able to avoid spending $200 for new animal crossing joycons. the only thing that was not made clear to me was the 'latch' , but maybe i wasnt looking close enough.
    also... magnetic screws are a godsend
    thanks for the relatively short and simple explanation! perfect for people who arent too knowledgeable about technology repairs/etc.

    Slow down, dude. You're video is more concerned with quick edits to match the cadence of your voice than it is with actually taking the time to demonstrate properly. I broke the ribbon cable connector at 1:37 because it's difficult to see where you lifted up as you described (zoom would have been helpful there), and I'm watching full-screen on a 28" 4k monitor.
    Also, the 2nd joycon can actually be replaced without removing any of the ribbon cables, which I did quite easily (albeit carefully).
    Thanks all the same.

    Don't put ribbon that above the battery above! put it in the hole exactly above the connector and between battery!
    Because of that one of mine was bent over! And it started to disconnect randomly and after dissambling again it was teared apart.

    Okay so it fixed my joy stick problem, I don't have an issue with any of the buttons but now my switch doesn't recognize when the controller gets put onto it.
    EDIT: I figured it out. The bottom ribbon cable was loose.

    This really helped me out, n saved me 70 bucks in getting new joycons but overall the left controller was sooo much harder to change the stick than the right, idk why but for me the right had a different location for the antenna slightly makign it way easier to deal with

    What would be the problem if the right joycon works fine when connected to switch but doesn't work wirelessly when disconnected? I followed this tutorial so I could open it up. Took a cursory look around and didn't see the antenna disconnected. And nothing seemed out of place. Don't know what I'm to look for outside of a potentially disconnected cable

    I know this is an old video but I should let you know this: you saved my TOTK Joy-Con. I was wondering why my right one wasn’t working so I decided to follow your video and the moment I opened it up I noticed the bottom cable ribbon was extremely loose. Like I could ever so gingerly remove it some it’s socket and out it came out. I thought I was gonna have to be sitting down for a while trying to trouble shoot… Nope just a loose cable.
    Edit: the only reason I was on your video is because my right joy comes wouldn’t work.
