Yesterday I fixed my original joycons that came with my switch on launch day. 1mm of cardboard or business card seemed to be too thick and less than 0.7mm was too little so I settled with 0.7mm. It's awesome playing with them again in skyward sword HD. Drift shouldn't have been a prob in the first place but Nintendo obviously never cared.
@@cal5964 I just used a business card and wrapped regular, clear, scotch tape around the little squares of it I cut out till they were 0.7mm. Go to any place of business or any one that has free business cards you can take and use them. One business card can fix over like 6 joycons. If you don't have calipers, just wrap the squares of card little by little. Put the shells on but don't screw it together yet and hold it firmly together and test to see if it is still drifting. If it is, you may need no wrap more tape around it. Check again till you got it fixed and put it back together. I wouldn't go over 1mm though. Your controller will bulge too much and if you need more than 1mm, your graphite contacts inside the controller are probably too dusty or actually worn really bad. Good luck!
@@cal5964 no problem! If you have any questions when trying this, please feel free to ask me. Also, you don't need to take off any ribbon cables, just be careful. And there is a part inside (I believe the left joycon) that you need to unscrew. There are 4 screws and it looks like you need to take them all out but you ONLY need to take out 2 of them. Taking out the others isn't needed and can easily strip the pcb. I suggest you watch an up to date vid first (Edit: My bad. Just realized these comments are under a vid on this entire topic🤦🤣). But it's simple enough and again, when you do this, if you have any questions at all, just hit me up on here. Have a good one!
This would've been useful 24 hours ago when I was taking my Joycon apart and then an earthquake happened dropping every screw I took out...let's just say my Joycon is now a misery pro
There’s probably a tutorial on RUclips already but from what I’ve heard it’s much MUCH more complicated/harder and you run the risk of permanently destroying your switch
Although it would definitely be harder to do than a regular Switch it theoretically shouldn't be too difficult. You could just follow a Switch Lite joystick replacement tutorial but when they are about to replace them just put cardboard under them instead.
At first, I was like: "I will subscribe to VK when I have fixed my Joy-Con..." But the birb intro was perfect. May this channel be as succesful as Jeff Besoz!
Bro... I had no hope of fixing my joy-cons but thanks to you I was able to do it myself and without spending any money, there are no words to say how grateful I am, thank you!
Nice. Thank you. But to be clear of all you want to do is apply cardboard fix no need to take joystick out. Once you get to the back of the stick it’s enough to simply put cardboard on and reseal right? Thanks.
just wanna give big shout out to you, just pulled 6 joycons apart and shim them with paper cards thanks to your tutorial and explanation i was able to get those done, thanks for this method and i hope it lasts awhile before i have to do it again.
My results: I had an original series red right Joycon that was drifting, and I used this method. It works! My notes: Everywhere I looked online it said to use a 1.5mm tri-wing, not a 2.0mm. So I had ordered that prior to watching this disassembly video, and it works; I have trouble imagining how a 2mm would even fit--maybe that's why so many people strip the screws? Also, I didn't measure the thickness but I used a Tracfone refill card, which seems to be the thickness of all gift-card backers as well. It kept drifting downwards right when I put it back together, but I wiggled it in all directions to get it evened out and that was all it took! Also, I didn't unplug the battery, I just flipped it downward out of the way as I only was putting the cardboard in. I saw as I was opening it that there is a narrow channel along the battery that the antenna wire is supposed to be seated in. I made sure to tuck it back in when re-assembling. Thank you so much!
This doesn’t look too complicated, and O happen to have appropriate tools for the job, but I’m just wondering what a good paper/cardboard to put under is. Good tutorial!
Thanks for re-uploading! Both of my joycons were drifting, I fixed my left one on the last video, and yes, the audio was quite distracting. With this video, I found it a lot easier to repair my right one, so thanks!
Thank you for this tutorial. My Switch was absolutely unplayable with the joy con drift, and being able to watch this tutorial fixed it! I got my tool kit on Amazon, and it took me 15 minutes. Thank you!!! ❤❤❤
My left Joycon desperately needs this fix, but I'm rather nervous to actually go through with it. Still, I very much appreciate this video. Seeing the process step by step is at least somewhat reassuring. Now I just need to work up my courage.
Hello ! I don't have a Switch and have been hesitating to get one for the longest time because of the joycon drift, because I live on an island and yada yada, support is not great. So I wanted to thank you for your videos ! I'm wondering, can you do a similar tutorial for the Switch Lite ? You said it was trickier to get open, so I'd want to know exactly how to do it, as I'm considering choosing a Lite as my default console. Thanks in advance, whether or not you can or can't do it, I appreciate what you've done already for all of us !
My ~$5 triwing joycon screwdriver just arrived, and I'm ready to fix this drift. I sent it to Nintendo about 2 years ago, and that fix only lasted a couple months. Thank GOD that was a free fix
It really is that easy huh? Thank you sooooo much! All 4 of my joycons have been drifting for basically as long as I've owned my switch, I've sent them all into Nintendo for repairs 2, some 3 separate times and they've all eventually started to drift again. Now all I did was put 2 pieces of a business card I had lying around in them all and just saved myself close to $150 in buying new ones. What a lifesaver!!
2:42 I have a weird issue where the bottom silver rectangle box stays attached to the back case instead of the front case for some weird reason which is kind of dangerous since there are wires getting pulled. Not sure what to do, I replaced my other joycon's stick a few months ago and didn't have this issue. Not sure if there's a way to make the silver box stay on the front case when I try to open the joycon. EDIT: Fixed, it has two holes on the bottom that allow you to insert something thin to VERY slowly pull down and remove it from the back case. Then I just pressed it down gently on the front case.
I was looking for this video when I noticed the video was deleted. I thought the Nintendo ninjas got to you because the other version of this video was removed for audio issues. Thanks again and to Fantasticquack.
Question: I managed to do everything you said but the drift still lingers just a tad bit and I didn’t clean the first joy con stick before adding the paper/business card. Would the clean up help the small linger of drift still there? Or is it a different issue? Edit: also the joy on looks like it’s bulging out a tad bit with the business card/paper/cardboard, is that normal?
I would guess that there's an above-average amount of dust in the stick, so probably clean it. Idk if he did this part in the video, but the dust is between the metal bit and the blue circuit board.
I want to try this, but i don't have the proper driver bit size for this. You wouldn't happen to know what sizes you're using, would you? I want to clear before I purchase a random "joycon repair kit" online and not have the right size bits.
I tried it the first time and it didn’t work, but then I went back in and put in a second piece, now it works great!! The one question I had was why the home button is now a little…….. odd. Idk really what to say about it other than when it’s pressed it goes all the way into the controller. I’m not sure if I broke something, or moved something, it just doesn’t feel the same. Also thank you so so so so SO much for finding this because it will help so many across the WORLD and I really love your way of thinking!! 🧠❤️😉
It’s possible that the shims are causing the top half of the joycon along w the joystick to sit higher/ bulge the center area, and since the home button has the lowest profile and is closest to the joystick it’s most affected and noticeable. I have no input as how to resolve it other than disassembling it to see if there’s some way you can adjust it.
I got jelly in my B button and tried other methods to un-stick it, but this was the only video that was easily understood, straight to the point, and showed all the steps I needed to get past the battery and all that. My joy-cons are limited edition (the first limited edition anything I’ve owned in my 27 years lmao) so this allowed me to avoid risking sending it to nintendo and them sending the joy-con back without the face plates. Thanks so much for this video!
Thank you so much my dude I was able to fix all 8 of my joy cons 😅 was a bit tricky at first but after a few I was fixing them all in under 10 min def saved me some money and time
While I do wish the camera would have been zoomed in more to see what's going on better, your descriptions of what you were doing seemed to make up for it and what could be seen was sufficient (I was screaming when you forgot the cardboard tho LUL)
If I'm fixing the drift with a small piece of paper is it necessary to pull out the battery from the circuit? What if I only lift it up but don't unplug it from the circuit can I still do it? I wonder if there is a reason why you decide to remove it completely.
Ok, I did it with my left joycon, did some calibration and it seems that the drift is gone! I have to try with some games, but i think there won't be any problem, i'm doing the drift test for about 30 mins and there's none, NOICE THANK YOU!
So i just tried the fix on one of the controllers, but sadly nothing has happened. Im going to try cleaning it out with compressed air later but for the most part not a lot has happened. I might try this on my other controllers to see if it will work
Your video is nice and thorough. I have an issue with my R button. I’ve already used the switch test feature and confirmed it’s not working. It doesn’t feel stuck, and doesn’t look dirty so I don’t think it’s just a cleaning issue. Can you do a video on what I should look for when I open it up?
Does anyone have any idea's on what I'm doing wrong? I did everything in the video as best I could but when I closed the Joy Con it simply would not close completely and I can see the insides from the slide rail. I than took it apart and took out the business card cut that I put in there and when I closed it it still didn't close properly. I'm not sure what to do.
is there any fix for the Pro controller drift? I'm getting a bit of drift on the Pro controller, not as much as the joycons but it's there. The Joycons work perfectly now, would it be the same technique for the Pro controller as well?
I want to take apart my joycons with drift and put all the components into my Hori split pad pros to make them wireless and better….you think it would work?
Ok. I have both joycons with drift. I did this fix with my left joycon and after one fricking hour of pieces flying around, I did the work. HOWEVER!!! I think this may fail (maybe not), and It's gonna be my fault. I used an 1,25 mm piece of paper and bended a lot one of the sides on the aluminum plate on the stick. So, if it works for a full month, I think it's a win, I think.
I did test this out on my joy cons and it made a major improvement but when I go down it doesn’t go to all the way and I have to press harder to make it do that. keep in mind I was using paper so it could’ve been that. is there anyway to fix it
Yo, i need some Help I know you puted the Set in the description but 1. For some reason the Website is on spanish 2. I Just need the screwdriver and nothing else, is there anything for that? Or could you Name the excact Name of them?
Just attempted it on my two drifting joycons. The left one seems to be working great now but the right joycon had a bad screw that wouldn't get loose, so i had to apply more force to get it open. I few things had gotten loose inside, and while i tried my best to get everything back in place the joycon now wont connect (and recharge) to the switch. Do you have an idea what part could be the problem? It would help me a lot if i had a better idea of what i'd need to look for
Omg this worked, I did the piece of cardboard drift fix and I have no more drift. I was nervous that I would accidentally break something but I managed to do it. I was NOT ready to accidentally break a joy con because I do not have the money to buy a new one, I spent to rest of my money on pre ordering Splatoon 3, same reason why I didn't send it in for free "repairs" (replacement) because I didn't know how long it would take to come in My joycon has a super slight bulge now but I don't think that'll be a problem, it's like a millimeter or less thicker.
Should I use cardboard or plastic? Because you said to some people it's better to use plastic. How thick should it be ? 1mm ? And will it be fixed permanently with plastic?
after i saw the video of the joy con drift, i grab my joy con and add some force, then i saw a problem. the left joycon (blue in my case) wasn't turnin on the side light, and it's still works but the SR is not funcioning. Can you make maybe a video of it and what buy? i'm realy afraid of opening my joycon. Thanks
If the lights on the side are no longer lighting up and the SL/SR buttons do not respond, it sounds as though the upper ribbon cable on the rail going to the main board is either not attached, attached improperly, or damaged. You can confirm this further by going to the calibration menu and testing the SL/SR buttons there. This cable may also be responsible for wireless sync, so that's something to keep in mind as well. If you're willing to open up your Joy-con to investigate, look up disassembly videos or go to iFixit to see a step by step guides with image reference. The first handful of steps in the joystick replacement guides there are useful for understanding how to get in. If the cable has simply been disconnected, it should be relatively simple to fix if you're patient and careful. A pair of screwdrivers of the correct size and tweezers or a spudger should be sufficient to get the job done, and can be found collectively in many analog stick replacement kits on Amazon for the Joy-con. If you find that the ribbon cable is damaged, you can also order a replacement flex cable for a relatively low price (around or under 10 American dollars). This is also a simple fix, so the process should not be too frustrating if it comes to that.
As someone who never took any electronics apart, is this a good idea to try yourself with moderate joycon drift. Because these things are way too expensive to break
@@FreDEV_OFFICIAL i can get it repaired but i dont feel like having to go weeks without the joy cons for drift that is annoying but not yet game breaking
both of the left joycons i own have drift and i was planning on fixing both so i started doing one and the bottom right screw on the back became stripped despite the other three coming off perfectly fine, so i gave up and tried the other joycon and the exact same thing happened, all the other screws besides the bottom right one came off. Is the bottom right one just harder than usual? idk what to do at this point
I wish you'd made mention of the fact that you can't merely tug to unplug the battery, or that you should keep track of the screw order, or that the internals of the joystick would shoot out all over the room after you're forced to break the metal plate because you chose to only show you removing the model with plating on one side that's easy to remove.
Very useful thank you. I'm very non-dexterous but I was able to apply the cardboard trick. I did however have another issue. Upon trying to screw back the battery case my R button fell out. No biggie I'll pop it back on like you did. However the little grip that goes under the R button came out, and I cannot for the life of me get it to stay on. I even showed my wife, who is nimble with very fine motor skills doing small nuanced jobs, what needed to be done and we just can't get it to stay. Is this some sort of defect? My R button has been spotty for quite some time. It almost looks like this piece should be welded on? Any ideas?
@@Alwaysbmoving yeah I got in there and saw it wasn't even on the circuit and had to be soldered. Chalked it up to a loss (though managed to play SS with it by mapping SR on the right joy con to R)
Ah a reupload to fix the audio. Still fine tho. Although in my opinion, you should use glove or avoid touching the double adhesive in the battery holder to prevent any fingerprints.
I detached the battery by pulling at the cables and the wires came loose. Was it intended to be this way? If yes there is a danger of shorting the battery. Edit: this is terrible advice, I destroyed the battery plug.
Sorry for the repost everyone but this time the audio levels are fixed!
It's ok
Yes the audio is much better this time thanks!

I’ve already used the switch test feature and confirmed it’s not working. It doesn’t feel stuck, and doesn’t look dirty so I don’t think it’s just a cleaning issue.
Can you do a video on what I should look for when I open it up?
I’m having the same issue, just with the L button.
A thousand thanks dude! Fixed both my joycons drifting thanks to your technique!
Just did this. Huge results for me. Thank you.
Does this work with the Switch Lite too?
Nobody have tested yet and I don't have a switch lite =(
@@VKsChannel ohh okok thank you :)
Can this be done on a pro controller?
Wait... pro controller can drift ?
@@FullmetalMax no
@@wilsonliborio2846 yeah it can
Are your scredrivers good quality? Because i dont know which should i buy.
Yes theyre good
This dude is already a legend. I’d say tightwad ass Nintendo owes you big.
Can you also do a fix for the Pro Controller?
Amazing video! Question about the card. How it should be? Something special or just any piece of cardboard will be fine ?
you can use a piece of a cereal box
i would have also extended the contacts the small metal tabs that make contact with what you cleaned first.
Literally watching a RUclips star in the making!
Pro controller use a completely different type of analog stick like the ones on PlayStation and Xbox
I want to take apart my joycons with drift and put all the components into my Hori split pad pros to make them wireless and better….you think it would work?
No, they have different components
I think the audio before was fine and you could’ve kept the video
if you listened with headphones you could see that the audio was a little distracting
you can watch it here
ruclips.net/video/LMwgA7_nW1o/видео.html
it worked! i love you? i mean i now have 4 working joycons. now i only need someone to play with...
What paper exactly did you use for the joycon drift?
use a thermal pad if you can, otherwise a piece of cardboard is just fine.
PD: no more than 1mm thick
I have threaded the screw so badly. Its never been more over than this
Ok. I have both joycons with drift. I did this fix with my left joycon and after one fricking hour of pieces flying around, I did the work. HOWEVER!!! I think this may fail (maybe not), and It's gonna be my fault. I used an 1,25 mm piece of paper and bended a lot one of the sides on the
aluminum plate on the stick. So, if it works for a full month, I think it's a win, I think.
Did it work ?
How do I fix the small cable if it detaches?
I did test this out on my joy cons and it made a major improvement but when I go down it doesn’t go to all the way and I have to press harder to make it do that. keep in mind I was using paper so it could’ve been that. is there anyway to fix it
Paper is about 0.1mm thick, but you can use a bigger sheet and fold it. You can use some tape as well to hold it together.
@@WorldLoveGaming so 10 pieces of paper on top of eachother would work?
@@winuphe5289 i d go with about 7/8 pieces of paper. you can always experiment to see what is best
Worked flawlessly on the side rail of the switch, thanks!
Yo, i need some Help
I know you puted the Set in the description but
1. For some reason the Website is on spanish
2. I Just need the screwdriver and nothing else, is there anything for that? Or could you Name the excact Name of them?
It was in portuguese actually, but I updated the links already
@@VKsChannel thank You ^^
Just attempted it on my two drifting joycons. It would help me a lot if i had a better idea of what i'd need to look for
How do I fix nintendo switch pro controller drift ?
trying to remove the black strips I accidentally disatach the yellow/orange strap. Anything I can do about that?
I fixed mi left joy con with the cardboard, thanks man
Omg this worked, I did the piece of cardboard drift fix and I have no more drift. I was nervous that I would accidentally break something but I managed to do it. I was NOT ready to accidentally break a joy con because I do not have the money to buy a new one, I spent to rest of my money on pre ordering Splatoon 3, same reason why I didn't send it in for free "repairs" (replacement) because I didn't know how long it would take to come in
My joycon has a super slight bulge now but I don't think that'll be a problem, it's like a millimeter or less thicker.
The battery cable push back with a wooden thing that you use when you eat something
I dont know the name
You will be able to record a tutorial for a nintendo switch lite? I mean, that would be a good idea for NS lite people, including myself :D
Because these things are way too expensive to break
if its drifting and you cant get it repaired for free you might as well attempt this.
@@FreDEV_OFFICIAL i can get it repaired but i dont feel like having to go weeks without the joy cons for drift that is annoying but not yet game breaking
You got a fix for game card dock?
It broke couple months ago and can't play breath of the wild because i got a hard copy of it
I just did this and they seem to be working fine so far. Thank you so much!
Did I fuck up by removing the lower ribbon connecting the back half to the front?
if you broke the ribbon cable yes, if its not broken you can reattatch it
both of the left joycons i own have drift and i was planning on fixing both so i started doing one and the bottom right screw on the back became stripped despite the other three coming off perfectly fine, so i gave up and tried the other joycon and the exact same thing happened, all the other screws besides the bottom right one came off. Is the bottom right one just harder than usual? idk what to do at this point
here's the solution

Any ideas?
I believe the R button is suppose to be soldered
@@Alwaysbmoving yeah I got in there and saw it wasn't even on the circuit and had to be soldered. Chalked it up to a loss (though managed to play SS with it by mapping SR on the right joy con to R)
not all heroes wear capes, thanks allot!
Ah a reupload to fix the audio. Still fine tho.
Although in my opinion, you should use glove or avoid touching the double adhesive in the battery holder to prevent any fingerprints.
I can't bend those damn metal tabs! Any tips?
Use a very thin screwdriver, its the best option
I detached the battery by pulling at the cables and the wires came loose. Was it intended to be this way? If yes there is a danger of shorting the battery.
Edit: this is terrible advice, I destroyed the battery plug.
I'd really like to know what type of Phillip's screwdriver you need
Check the description
hopefully you can do a video for the Switch Lite owners
I can't seem to find the philips normal screwdriver. Does anyone a link to one? I can't seem to find the same size as used in the video
there is a link in the description for the toolkit
