Thank you! For the purpose of application, Calarts is more interested in seeing good draftsmanship and value design so I didn't want to spend too much extra time on color. Just enough to prove that I can do it. Personally, I love adding colors to everything :)

Hello! I just wanted to say that I love your work so much! i have a question though. I saw at your description that it took you 4 years to get in. It must have been a bit daunting. May I ask what did you do in those 4 years? did you take college or personal classes? I am in a similar situation and am worried about "wasted years" if I do not get in into art school. Thanks in advance!!

Wowowowow!! earned yourself a subscriber, not only for an amazing sketchbook but how open you are about your process and learning. I hope you don't mind if I ask a few questions? I'm trying to learn perspective, but it's painfully difficult. Did you learn perspective mainly from drawing life, or did you study how to draw boxes first drawing horizon lines and vanishing points? I don't really do enough of either, but I'm intimidated to draw from life(although I know how good it is for me), simply because I don't have any grasp on perspective. Do you think I should just get into life drawing without much understanding of perspective? Also, you mentioned life drawing is very slow, so you are really observing the object. But, do you first take a sweep of the scene, and imagine large shapes and silhouettes before drawing, or do you mainly contour draw, so it's less worrying about positions of objects? I'm just so new to perspective and life drawing, that I'm embarrassed by my inexperience even though we probs are the same age. Sorry for asking so much, but much appreciated if you do answer.

chocolate icecream Thank you for your kind words and support!
Those are great questions! While I don’t think it’s possible to fully understand perspective without drawing from life, it’s also NOT necessary to fully understand perspective before you START drawing from life. Rather, I suggest thinking of what you have read about perspective as a starting point, something to keep in mind as you draw from life. At the end of the day, I believe everyone has a slightly different way of thinking about perspective. So in time, you may also develop a method that makes the most sense to you. In short, draw from life as much as you can and you WILL get it eventually!
Ah...when I mentioned life drawing was slow I meant that I’d draw directly with pen and make my strokes as slow as possible. Once I had built up my drawing muscles that way, the time lost from slowing down my stokes is trivial compared to the time gained from never having to erase and redraw any of my lines. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with drawing with pencil and erasing your lines, but personally I found that drawing directly with pen helped me draw faster and loosen up. Because of that, even my pencil drawings improved tremendously. But back to your question, I’d also love to share with you on how I approach perspective!
So here it goes: I usually start by looking for perspective cues around the environment and imagining perspective guides for all 3 dimensions. (I’d never actually draw them) Objects with long straight lines are especially helpful! Then, I’d start thinking about the positions of individual objects in relation to me, how far below or above my eye level, how far to the right or left of me, and most importantly, how far away they are. Note that all of this is done intuitively so there’s no maths involved! When I actually start drawing, I start with what’s closest to me and gradually move back in space until I’ve drawn the furthest thing I want to draw. I try to make sure that the first thing I draw is as accurate as possible because it will act as a perspective guide for the rest of the drawing. There are 2 questions I ask myself when I’m checking whether I’m getting the perspective right. 1) Does the position of the object in the drawing, as suggested by its perspective cues, match that of its real world counterpart? 2) Are the proportions and angles of my lines accurate? Notice how the 1st question treats the drawing as a 3D space while the 2nd question treats it as a flat image? Both are equally important and useful in checking the perspective. In a way, perspective is just like proportions, except in a 3d space instead of a flat image.
I hope that wasn’t too technical or overwhelming! Please let me know if you have any questions! And once again, this is just MY approach. Every artist develops a different approach, and even I don’t follow my own rules sometimes lol Perspective should just be a tool to help you draw. Right now, if it’s actually stopping you from drawing, then I’d say screw perspective and just start drawing from life! I didn’t think about any of this at first. But after doing it so much, it just came naturally!

@@jethrotai1721 Thank you so much. Really, your words made total sense and are very insightful to me, since I have no starting point. I guess I overthink perspective too much, so yeah screw it. I believe the most convincing art with perspective, is those that have freedom about it, instead of making it look so mathematical. Again, thank you for taking the time to respond. I genuinely think you'll be one hell of an artist one day, cus you have the drive for it and the excitement to improve. I'll def hope you continue to upload more things about your art on youtube! (no pressure tho cus I know calarts is very intense and draining).

chocolate icecream chocolate icecream You’re welcome! Just start drawing from life and you’ll naturally begin to understand perspective, how to apply it in practice, and develop your own approach! I agree! I also think perspective that “feels” right rather being mathematically correct are much more appealing! Thank you so much!! 😆😆I’ll definitely try! In the meantime I’ll regularly upload new art on my Instagram if you’re also interested!

0:57 is that a requirement for Cal arts sketchbooks or is it just something everyone seems to do because it's cool? I've seen well over 10 of these cal arts acceptance videos and every single sketchbook has this pull out section inspired by that one artist whose name im forgetting

    • @jethrotai1721

It's definitely not a requirement! For me it was because I wanted to do some of the drawings with white marker on toned paper, which helps break up the monotony of page after page of black ink on white paper.

I believe CalArts made an exception for Fall 2021 applicants and only required a video, but in the past, applicants would always have to physically mail their sketchbooks. I suggest emailing Character Animation's Review Coordinator to make sure what their requirements are for Fall 2022!
