- Here's my accepted Calarts sketchbook from this year. This was my first time applying. I've watched loads of these over the years so I figured I'd contribute mine. It's kinda crusty and started as a normal sketchbook because I didn't originally plan on applying, but here we are :)
I messed up a bit on the editing for a second but I also don’t care enough to go back because it doesn’t dox me or anything

In case people are curious, I won't be attending Calarts this fall. Tuition costs were higher than I was willing to go. Same goes for any of the other schools that some of you may have seen me talking about elsewhere. I'm diverting from art/animation and will be studying aerospace engineering :) I'm planning on posting a portfolio for some of the schools that I got into somewhere accessible in the near future so I can help people who were in the same boat as I was when I was applying. Wishing class of 2025 and future applicants the best!!
ooh engineering sounds rlly interesting! its a shame animation wont work out for you but im sure youll have a great time with whatever you choose to pursue. best of luck!!

Thanks!! My tips are pretty much the same as everyone else’s. I don’t think that they place too much weight on the sketchbook compared to your actual portfolio, so I’d spend more time on that. Don’t compare what you have to other uploaded ones too heavily; mine wasn’t a masterpiece and I still managed to get in. If I really hated a page, I would paint over it or scribble around parts that I didn’t like. Several of the earlier pages were sketchbook assignments for school so there’s that too. I drew a lot of what was around me. My sister plays tennis so I came with her to a public court to draw a couple of times. I think it’s just a normal sketchbook that gives insight to you as an artist.

I have 17 sketchbooks that I've filled over the past 6 months but all they're filled with is doodles, equations and working out from my maths homework with the occasional good drawing here and some random paintings and collages. You looks muchmore neat by comparison.
You can't see it but most of the pages that I painted over with acrylic paint have differential equations on them. This is thicker paper than I usually use so I tried to be less liberal with my notes. The one I just started already has homework and lecture notes in it. There is normally a lot more visible math in my sketchbooks haha

I may in the future, but I’d need to find time to re-record it. This is just an upload of the video I had sent to calarts plus music. I recorded it a couple of hours before the submission deadline so my set up was a bit janky and I’d likely have to figure something out if I wanted to do voiceover. If enough people want it and I don’t forget I’ll definitely do it though :)

What materials are in 4:55?
The background is random acrylic paint that I mixed because I didn't want to waste it after finishing a painting. The lines for the shoes are Stabilo point 88 liners and the feet and hands are painted with some not so great gouache that kept coming out translucent and wouldn't layer (I don't remember the brand)
What sketchbook is this?
Strathmore mixed media 500 series 5.5”x8.5” !! Not sure if I’d buy it again

@@dominic-ir5zs I mean, you need to know how to run a business if you want to make money from your art.
@@timtam3730 you also need to practice your craft and attending a school like cal arts that has such a low acceptance each year and high amount of applicants is a great career move . Art school is more important for an artist than business school.
