    Congrats on your acceptance!
    Watching your other videos, you can see all the improvements between the first and the final sketchbook; from the increased confidence in using colour to your line work becoming so much more expressive and bringing more energy to the drawing. Also you can see your personal style becoming more prominent in the observational drawings in the last sketchbook. My favourite pages were the monkey observational drawings and The Shape of Water screen caps!
    It'd be so interesting and motivating if you made a video discussing the application process as well as your mindset throughout from the viewpoint of making repeat submissions.

      Lisa Fang Thank you so much for your kind words! It means a lot to me. As for the sharing about my application process, I was not about to made it so far because I’m not sure how many viewers to watch it. English is my second language, and I didn’t have much experience of facing camera. I want to use the time of this summer to gather my thoughts and made some plans of my creation so I can get well prepared for my first semester in Calarts and my first year film. Maybe I’ll made a video about my application process in a appropriated time if I have good equipment to support this work.

    I’m also looking into applying to CalArts and just wondering: how old are you currently? I’m going to be a high school senior this year, but I know I have a lot to improve on as an artist before creating a CalArts sketchbook. Do you think around 20-22 years old is too late for applying?
    Oh, and of course, congrats on your acceptance!! Again, love your work!

      Hi! Thank you so much for your kind words to me. I think it is never too late to make the right choice and let youself get on the right track to your goal. I have to tell you the truth. I'm 28 years old now. When I started my first application in 2014, I was 22 already. At that time, I'm already a graduated student of an art academy in China. Before I was officially accepted this year. I've rejected for three time. In this process, to make a living, I also worked in an animation company located in Beijing for 2 years. English is my second language. In order to make my TOEFL score meet the standard, I took the toefl for 11 times in the two applications in 2014 and 2015. In both cases, I was rejected because of bad language grades. In 2018, I started my third time of application. At last I was accepted by 5 schools, and I choosed to go to Ringling. However, I still not gave up and started my forth time of application. Finally this time, I made it. When I look back my journey, I really think this is worthwile. We only have one time of life. There is nothing better than make a dream become real in your own lifetime. Calarts is a school worthy of your best efforts.

      @@yorickcao0621 Wow, your story is very inspiring to me, since all the people I've seen who applied to top art schools are usually high school graduates or in their early 20s. Your work ethic is seriously admirable, especially since you're applying from a different country! My father is also an immigrant from China, so I can only imagine how difficult your journey getting here must have been. Thank you for the response and the inspiration. Hope you have a great CalArts experience! :)

    Absolutely breathtaking. For these works, did you go straight into pen or do you sketch things out in pencil first? (Like at 0:40 and at 1:40 for example?)

    • @yorickcao0621
      @yorickcao0621  2 года назад +2

      It depends. For most situations, I just go straight into the pen. (As you saw at 1:40, the line people on the left is overlapped with the line of the building, that's because I just draw it and didn't consider the composition very well.) , because that's the practice of observational drawings for, but sometimes I would consider starting with a very loose sketch if the composition or the perspective is a little bit complicated.

    • @yorickcao0621
      @yorickcao0621  4 года назад

      Hi Star! Yes I did. For observational drawing, if the drawing might took me a Iong time to finish, I would take some photos in the preparation stage, which could be used for the reference of rendering and coloring. For Character design, I also used to find some reference photos to make me have more clear idea about the possible direction of my drawing. Rational use of reference can help us to create better results. For beginners, it is better not to rely on their own imagination to make up content out of nothing, it is better to base it on real life.
