Step-by-step tutorial! • How To Resurface Drive...
I fill driveway cracks with a custom mix of 2 parts sand to 1 part Portland cement. On public sidewalks, I use RapidSet Cement All so it hardens fast and I never need to close down a sidewalk. I always prime before painting, and I apply 2 to 3 coats of paint. The paint I used in this video is Valspar Solid Color Concrete Stain from Lowes. (Although I've recently switched to a better quality paint by BEHR, called 'Concrete and Garage Floor Paint 1-Part Epoxy Coating'
The material cost for this project was about $350, and it took 3 days to do.
Many, MANY people have tried doing this, and failed, but that's because they did it incorrectly. If you follow the directions on the can, it should turn out great and last a while, although touchups every 6 months, or recoats every 12 months are highly recommended. Driveways require more maintenance than anything else on residential properties, yet they receive none from the average homeowner. Tearing it out and pouring a new one can cost anywhere in the range from 8k all the way to 20k, so this method of resurfacing I demonstrate is becoming a trend.

Its a shame that people watched the video and hit like after to many vies too lil likes people need to be more soportive
A smooth painted surface like that is dangerous, when it gets wet if a car leaves some oil it will be a skid pan.
@@jjamespacbell I assure you, that is not an issue. The companies that have been producing these concrete paints for the last few decades have considered more than just the obvious. The surface, even after 4 coats, is still surprisingly rough. And whenever I paint smoother concrete, or concrete that is at a steep incline, I always add anti-skid powder to the paint which leaves the finished result feeling like sandpaper.
God bless you bro, when you said the "Most satisfying type of work you've ever done in your entire life..." I felt that! Best!
Happy you found something you find satisfying and able to make a living doing it. You do a great job. Thanks for sharing your talent.
I had an idea on how to do my driveway and side walkway, and then I found your video. Nicely done! Gave me confidence to do mine now. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Phenomenal!!!
Great job!

Bravo.
Please post longer videos showing more of the painting! It was soo satisfying to watch!
Good job.
That final shot shows how it makes the whole house pop.
Looks great. 👍
Great job sir! I wish your business keeps growing
I've never liked the idea of people being so wasteful and ripping out driveways, etc when repairs or updates can be done instead. Nice job!
Thank you! Yeah, it's sad. I grew up poor, so we never replaced anything unless it was truly beyond repair. :)
@@claybannermasonry Me too. I think everyone should experience some hardship when growing up. Most likely they'll end up resourceful & creative! 👍

Great job inspired me to try on my driveway. Some told me to have someone cut out the areas where the crack is an have them redo it. Sounded like over kill to me. I subscribed I look forward to your upcoming videos. Favor go before you and prosper on the way!
Oh the joy this brought me and inspiration to consider revamping my own!

Good luck and success with your business...I've been doing spalled or cracked concrete walks, driveways, stairs and walls for 3 decades, here in the philly area...A couple suggestions, which may increase your bottom line and give a better end result. For cracks, up to 1 inch wide. I ALWAYS used mesh tape, embedded in premixed latex patching compound. There are many great, chemically balanced, hi performance, patching compounds in redi mix. I'd suggest using one of those; you squeegee them on..Then an Elastomeric sanded coating applied over; the whole surface; water proofs it and gives grip for tires and they last for years... Good health to you and yours.
Thank you very much! I appreciate the tip! 🤗
If you can get a copy of the Concrete Repair Manual written by the US Bureau of Reclamation it would be a good document to have if you are doing concrete repairs. The Bureau of Reclamation is recognized world wide as the leading experts in concrete they wrote the original Concrete Manual.
Hello Sir
I saw your comment on driveways and respect your expert opinion .
Do you have any brands of Latex cement patch and mesh your prefer . Or Elastomeric sanded paint for driveways you prefer lately ?
Great tips

Wow good job. Nice side hustle that turned into a main job. I’d like to learn how to do this. Any idea how long the mortar and paint holds up.

nice work 😊
Great job, many blessing with your business and on perfecting your craft!
It is true in the comments when they say it's important to find what's causing the cracks once you find that, fix that issue, then fix the cracks! Even though you painted over it you can see all the stroke marks of you fixing those cracks were you try to feather it in with the paintbrush! I'm not sure what that stuff cost and how that would affect as a whole I don't know but I would think taking a very small layer and doing the same thing how your painting with this paint do that with the stuff you're filling the crack with just paint it on like you're painting and then paint a small layer on so you wouldn't see those lines
very nice job! instead of using paint you can use a mixes of Portland Cement and Lime depending what color you're going for.... Let cure for about 24 hrs and should never peel or fade, you just redo another coat in around 10-12 years. thumbs up
Thanks! Yeah, I've done that before, too. It's not a bad option.
Very useful video
Yes please make a detailed video explaining how you do it as that will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Absolutely! I will make one in a month or so :)
@@claybannermasonry Thanks!

Thanks for the video
Hey man nice little touch up. If a customer can pay this for 1000-2000 vs a new driveway for 20000$ then hey well worth it
Nice job. Does driveway paint come in different colors?
Great video I enjoyed watching it, is both paints UV stable?
Use an SBR, sand and cement slurry in the cracks before putting the mortar in as a bonding agent . If a big crack you can drill into the sides of the crack and resin anchor rebar into it before filling with fine aggregate concrete.
Awesome 👍🏻
Wow great job and video thanks
More videos on this please
Hi, what kind of prime did you use? I am using a grinder machine on my painted concrete drive way and I believe I need to prime as well before staining?
What type/brand of mortar do you use? I’m planning to repair some cracks in my driveway, too. Thanks.
Keep it feathered buddy. High and tight
Did u power wash before , it's amazing !
The question is the resurface or to replace. Your neighbors are fortunate to have someone with your skills living next to them. I can't see wasting all of concrete already in place but the driveway is old and that might be an issue. I will look for a resurfacing contractor and painter. Thank you for your video, it is exactly what I am looking for. FYI I am in Los Angeles.
Nice!
moore videos like this! =D
Hello by any chance does the mixture you use crack? Or is pretty solid. I’m curious so I can do this to my parents house.
No, I've never seen any severe cracking in my patch work... But all masonry eventually cracks, so, someday it will. The mortar I use is 2 parts sand, 1 part cement
Cool music, but I also watch a lot if car repair stuff cool video😂😂
Awesome work! How much do you charge/how do you charge customers ? You’ve inspired me to start a small side gig!
What patch material did you use to fill cracks?
AWESOME JOB!!! just curious how ya get away with doing a city sidewalk??
Thanks! It is a suburban sidewalk maintained at the homeowners' expense. What do you mean by "get away with"? 🤔
QUESTIONS: What was the product you painted inside the crack before putting in the (concrete/patch) in the crack? Also, was that regular concrete or patch that you put in the crack?
Great job! 👌
Do you have to let the mortar repairs fully dry before priming and painting?
Absolutely.
@@australiaprisonisland9156 Thank you 👍🏼
Thanks! Yes, I wait until it's fully cured before priming and painting
Can you tell me what materials you used?
I have a sunken driveway. Just upper right side or right quadrant has a negative grade with water running back to my house foundation. Can I overlay it on that side with a certain product that's stable and will hold up to cold canadian winter temperatures with the snow and ice that comes with it? I need to bring that corner up about 3 inches. Something that won't break up or crack or peel?
Absolutely! If you have a Home Depot near you, there are cold weather cements/concrete/mortars there. Since you're only going 3 inches or so, you could really use any ordinary mortar. Just be sure to clean the surface well and make a bunch of grooves in it with an angle grinder. Then brush a slurry of water+cement over it before spreading your mortar. After the mortar is applied, screeded, dried, you can brush another slurry of cement over it to really seal it in. I'll have to make a video on that someday. Hope it makes sense :D
Best of luck!
Damn Jones', always gotta keep up...
Nice.
As the years go by, consider update photos to impress us even more, if possible.
I started experimenting with this. I worked out I did it wrong which could be the right way too if done differently.
I used a tube of crack filler and then ground that down. You can see the grind marks where it's painted. Not good.
I might look at hiring a larger grinder and going over the whole thing...
Is the mixture you fill crack with quick creat
Hey this is really cool. I’d like to learn how to do this.
I would like to see this same driveway 2 -3-5 years later to see how it holds up, see how durable it is!
Tks for help me,i wiill do it !!
Muito bem, irmao! 😉💪
It looks awesome, but can i ask,is that paint what you use at the end,if so can you show next time what u use at the end, hope seen more. All the way from Puerto Rico 🎉🎉🎉
Sure thing! I will make more detailed How To video in the future 😁👍
I'm going to do mine. So you used Rapidset Cement All to resurface? Did you apply a concrete glue to the surface, first? Something like Sika?
I just dilute some epoxy and apply a thinned layer first, then 2-3 thick layers. Works like a charm! But concrete primers are excellent, too
I only used the RapidSet to fill cracks and spalled areas
How much do you charge per square footage? Where is this located?
For your cement+sand mixture, do you use a bonding agent at all?
It is recommended to use a bonding agent (simple cement slurry will work) and sometimes I do. Sometimes I don't. Never had issues, though. My ratios are 1pt cement to just 2pts sand, so it's tough stuff 😊
Very cool my friend
How do you keep it from cracking up into gravel and dust
Have you deal with mortor, and surfacing like yours over existing black cement tar
Nope. There are sealcoating companies that deal with resurfacing asphalt if that's what you mean 🙂
Should definitely run a RUclips video of the full process slowly detailed lol
Will do :)
How do you think the paint would hold up in freezing conditions (cured of course) and snow removal?
It says it’s concrete paint so it should be good
It lasts alright. I did my neighbors driveway in January. Held up just fine through the snow. But like all things, it needs maintenance. Good idea to recoat every late spring and mid fall.
@@claybannermasonry hahah yeah right nobody's gonna add their driveway to maintenance schedule twice a year.
@@Mike-om4tv My clients have.
What kind of paint does drive way required ,great job
Thank you!
The best option is BEHR 1-Part epoxy from Home Depot
What's the average cost for a job like that. It looks great
Well, I've just GOT to do this to my small driveway this summer!! A little more description of just what you are using would be great What degreaser did you use? At 1:00 what are you pouring from the bucket? And is that a crack that was filled with grout, or is that a thin grout mix in the bucket? Same at 1.26? Not sure what a screed board is (I'll look it up.) Did you use an etching compound before painting? Ever use a different color when painting a driveway? Great video. Thanks!!
Yes, I am planning to make more detailed tutorial videos about this in the future. :) I am pouring RapidSet Cement All over the spalled areas.
I use a primer sometimes, but it's not really necessary. Lately I've switched over to a one part epoxy by BEHR
Thanks for the comment! Cheers!
Does that Valspar driveway paint come in other colours?
It does, but I have to warn ya... color doesn't hold too well. Grey seems to be the best, and it hides efflorescence.
Nice work do you use quick Crete products?
Thank you! Yes, indeed! :)
Very good job bro! So you actually get it done with just a roller and not a trowel ??????
Thank you! Yes, indeed :)
I'm considering going this route for my driveway that was not finished well... it's new but ugly and unsightly. I want to grind it level and smooth and then refinish it. Is paint the only means to create a textured finish on it after it has been ground down?
Pretty much, yeah. A more expensive route would be RapidSet CementAll over the entire thing, but I'll tell ya, that is HARD. Even with my skills, I'd be scared to attempt it over a whole driveway. Paint and painting techniques are a safer route.
I’d be very interested to see how it holds up in 2 to 5 years.
Not well. Everywhere there is a crack from slab movement the grout will separate from one or both sides and begin to get crushed. Hard freezes will exacerbate the degradation of the grout. The paint will gradually chip and peel more and more, and make its way into the local water ways.
@@reidflemingworldstoughestm1394 I have not had issues with "grout" coming out. I'm using a very strong cement mortar that bonds incredibly well. Some hairline cracks form but those are easily filled with more paint. Speaking of the paint, yes, it will eventually start to chip/peel a little bit here and there, but once it's been repainted a couple more times, the layer is thick and strong enough to last decades. Driveways take more abrasive damage than anything else on a residential property, so it's surprising that a paint can protect them at all.
The local waterways contain large amounts of chemicals and oils that come from our cars.
@@claybannermasonry Concrete is also made with very strong cement. And rebar. Those hairline cracks become the giant gas that you just filled. The original driveway is just as thick and even stronger than your grout, and it doesn't last.
Oh, so there's already pollution in the local water, so it's just fine if you add more. Sure. NP. Keep telling yourself that.
@@reidflemingworldstoughestm1394 When oil and chemicals from cars no longer pollute the waterways, I will stop resurfacing driveways. When someone invents a type of concrete that never cracks, I will happily use it. Instead of complaining to a small business like me about environmental damage, go complain to the government and big corporations.
Have a nice day. 😘
@@claybannermasonry There ya go. As long as somebody else is doing it it's absolutely fine if you do it too.
Keep telling yourself that Clay. I'm not convinced, but then again I am encumbered with a conscience and the ability to reason.
Is that brick mortar or tile thin set? Is sand in the mixture
I use both. I use thicker-sand mortar for wider cracks and thin-sand mortar for finer cracks. I usually mix it myself. I'll buy sand from the material yard by the truck load, then buy portland cement and a bag of fine, kiln-dried sand and make different mixes depending on the cracks.
I would like to see this has held up after 2 years please.
What can I use to put in the joints like to caulk in there any advice my driveway has joints?
Yes, a concrete caulking is a good idea for the joints! :)
Concrete paint never seems to be a longer term solution as ice and snow easily remove it from the substrate. Of course, it looks great and I am happy that it’s been working for you. I also have a concern about how slippery the driveway gets when wet.
It's not slippery at all when wet. The finish is flat, and the rough texture of the old concrete is still very much there. And you're right, it's not a long term solution, really. You need to apply a new coat of concrete stain/paint every 6 months to a year. Driveways take more of a beating than any other part of a residential property. But I think a couple hundred bucks of driveway stain each year is a better deal than spending 20k or more on a new driveway. That's just me.
@@claybannermasonry ... Would you consider asphalt as a more longer-lasting solution? The only thing I don't like about asphalt is that it is darker, when not painted. Its flexibility is the key of its survival. Unsure how much money it would cost for me though, because my nearly 4-decade old slowly crumbling concrete driveway is long, like probably 5 times longer (but around the same width) than the one in your video.
Nice touch…!
On an average driveway how many gallons would you say you put in total for the Behr coating?
For two coats, most driveways need anywhere from 4 to 6 gallons. :)
How long does this last in snow and ice type climates?
As long as you use a plastic snow shovel over it, it lasts just as well as anywhere else. :)
Do you ever have that Cement all cracks in you? If yes What’s the cause? It’s so annoying
Do you recommend adding a clear coat of sealant on top ?
It's not necessary. It would be better to add one or two extra coats of epoxy than to add the clear sealer. Also, sealer may not adhere very well to the epoxy.
