Hey, thanks for the reply. I"m going to HD now. Still not sure if I want to go the Portland cement and glue route or try an actual resurface product. I'm in the Roc/Buffalo area of NY so I completely understand what you mean about this being an annual maintenance activity.
This brings back memories. I remember as a child my grandfather doing this every year to the concrete steps leading to our family plot at the cemetery. I remember him mixing a whitewash after the concrete wash and painting it white.
Yup, I have done this type of repair in Ontario many times, it truly is not permanent, but at the same time allows you to spruce up your porch top on the cheap, and very quickly. Same can be said for using a masonry coating in the same fashion for making your parging look like new. Price wise this makes sence more and more considering the costs of replacement. Good job Mike!
'...it truly is not permanent,..' what is permanent anyway? nothing built is permanent. at least not in this part of Penna. close to Mike's city. funny how people will use blacktop re-surfacer and asphalt sealer without calling it permanent but hesitate to resurface with cement because it's not permanent. i'd like to experiment on my own driveway. bond half with the commercial cement "glue" and half with Mike's suggested Portland paint. see which lasts the best and maybe why.
Hi Mike, I always get around to watching one or more of your videos. I have an old house down here in Southern New Jersey where our weather is not that much different then yours. My 60 year old concrete driveway has held up okay but needs a face lift. I was considering a chip and tar covering but I'm certain the price will be prohibitive. So, I began to think about just patching and whitewashing and this led me back to your wonderful videos. God bless you. I wish you many years of good health and travel.
Thank you Mike, after 2 weeks of researching various products to resfurce concrete I was so confused. Now, understanding, no matter what resurfacer I use- it's all just temporary. This video is the perfect solution. MHSOHK is the best. Stay well,Thanks again
Just came across this video as I am planning to resurface my concrete driveway and searching for information here. I love your concrete painting technique which I have never heard it. Guess I am not young anymore (60s) and so I like old school.. LOL! I really can't tell any difference between brush painting with Portland and using a sponge float with the Concrete Resurfacer. I am going to concrete paint my driveway now! I am in Florida and hope I don't need to do it every year.. . Thank you for sharing this old school technique:)!
Thanks again Mike I always try to make notes and save your videos I am in no way an expert I am a mechanic by trade my wife and I are buying a three level Townhouse I always have something to repair especially outside my concrete walkway leading up to the door is in need of repair I am learning everthing from your videos and thank John for is Service and you also for serving our country keep the videos coming your friend for life Mickey Griggs
Thanks Mike my foundation blocks were crumbling , but after watching your videos was able to repair them and i get alot of compliments , i to paint cars and do body work. thanks again
Great work mike definitely old school proper tradesman old way you can't go wrong Mike 👍 from London old stone mason that best way to do repairs on stone work or concrete we use
Hi Mike, @16:40 you mention sealing. I am considering this step, but worried about next portland paint jobs. I'm afraid the remaining sealer will impair the paint from sticking. Kinda like trying to paint over silicone Reason I am considering sealer is I have a lot of maple tree around my driveway, and last autumn, dead wet leaves left ugly and stubborn stains all over the unsealed portland paint.
Hi Mike: I just finished fixing the cracks in my cement driveway. I wet it down, painted it with portland then filled in the cracks with a 2 to 1 mix of sand to portland. I want to thank you for all your vids. I am a few years younger than you and was real tired after doing this. You must have great stamina to be doing all the work you do at your age. Good luck and thanks much!
Great demonstration and explanation. The inventor of the adhesive was Rohm & Haas before they were bought by Dow. It was called Rhoplex E-330 but there are many makers of it now. And you did it right... add it to the water first.
OMG, you just save me from my HOA. These people are up my case about a stupid driveway in middle of a pandemic. Thank you so much. I’ll definitely do that😘
My buddies and I have a drinking game, you have to consume every time you say Pennsylvania. I just can’t play anymore I get too drunk. LOL. Thanks for the videos. It’s a big help!
this helps a lot in answering my question about stamped concrete too thank you for all you do one last question could one do a 1/4 inch pour over a concrete porch and patio to help level out the hills and valleys of an old pour and to gain proper slope i just don't have the cash to do a new pour
Thanks Mike, I am going to try this on my old patio (poured in 1958) and was about 3 inches thick, color treated, but is now worn and in some places lifted by pine roots, so I thought I'd use the diamond cup to help smooth out the rough places. I am on fixed income, and cannot afford a new patio, so I will try and dress this up.
I watched the "how to" for stone over concrete for patio, and it seems ideal, but flagstone here is very costly and there are not that many outlets here in Central California. I also need to replace an aging asphalt driveway, but looking at pavers here locally, after a few years, they all badly fade. I would prefer real cobble. What is your view for granite cobble?
Great info thank you I'm wondering if the same resurfacing longevity applies for parging? Have to redo the purging around my foundation after 20 years but I'm wondering if I'll have to resurface it every year.
Hey Mike , Outstanding video sir, going to try it on my driveway. When I finish patching and painting the foundation. Love all the videos sooo helpful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Bob
Mike, as always, thank you for sharing my friend. There is no doubt Wilkes Barre/ Scranton area gets harsh winters. Thats great that it held up for two years. A lot of torrential rain this year probably washed a lot of it away. Talk to ya later.
Hi Mike, I live in Sub Tropical Brisbane, Australia. It ranges between 102° - 45° F. through the year. If I read you right its the freezing and ice that breaks the surface down over time. So if we don't get ice is a coating like this going to last a lot longer. I was thinking i would spray a clear sealer on it as well to prevent mould and algae which is the main problem we have in warm humid conditions
Hi Bruce, yep, up in these parts it is the ice and snow, I would do a little sample before you do anything and see how it works out for you, thanks mike
I ground down high spots on sidewalk like you did around 2;00, and it exposed lots of gravel which got ground a lot also. Now I worry that those spots are too slick for a patch to adhere. I'm talking about patching, fill and leveling, some spots maybe 3/8 deep but usually less, and feathering, not just a 'paint' mixture like you show in this video. Should I be concerned about the adhesion to smooth gravel ?
Thanks for doing these and the tips. No surface lasts forever. Asphalt you have to patch and seal every year. Concrete needs TLC, too. A patch and skim with Portland is a lot cheaper than replacing unless the Concrete has completely failed.
Wow, thanks for all the info. You remind me of my dad. I bought a 2 year old house. Has a new concrete drive that looks that looks like the previous owner used some rock salt on it. "Spalling" has left some areas with lots of little craters/pock marks. I'm gonna try the concrete resurfacer stuff to fill in the marks and make it all smooth again. Central Indiana so we get lots of snow too. It's not a big drive - about the same size as your example. Concrete company quoted $3800 to come put a top coat on it. Hmm, that sounds crazy high! I'll try that old school way first. Spend that $$ on other stuff!
Thanks for the advice! It's more of a cosmetic thing - just want the drive to look "better". I'm ok with doing the labor/sweat equity. The unsalted areas look fine.
you have a way with presentation Mike; they are very effective and enjoyable. i've reviewed this one a few times as there are a lot of concrete drives in this area and most of the owners use ice and snow melter's. so...there is accelerated wear. done a few and do add washed/coarse sand to the Portland cement. not a lot but enough to add traction in the Winter. we get slippery conditions and more grit seems to help pedestrian and auto movement. just a float or broom finish doesn't work as well when the surfaces wear down . but then, as you point out, it's time to recoat.
ok maybe epoxy or elastomeric with a little sand or just patch the chipped&cracked concrete on the garage floor with cement-all or vinyl patch? Thanks alot for your help Mike & great videos i learn alot of new & diff ways on doing things since im not a pro at it. I just mainly tuck point & do minor some brick replacement so watch ur videos all the time! tanks again!
Hi vicki, inside a carport I am more of a fan of real patio paint, after you fix the cracks and pits, I would ask the paint store, I hope it helps, thanks mike
Great video mike. I quess you could pigment that slurry if you wanted too. I use this technique after i parge my verticals only with a piece of foam and rub it in.
Great video Mike. What is the drawback of painting with Cement all. I used it and it stayed for 3 years. I put some glue when I mixed it and I wet the sidewalk and it worked and looked good. I used Cement all because I can't close my sidewalk for a long period of time. Should I use cement all again because it starting to fade. The video says that Cement all can be used from a feather edge. Thx Mike. .
Hi gittar, I would say it is just a covering till you need it again, so you can do a lot of different things but it all comes out the same, If that makes sense, thanks mike
Very cool Mike. I had no idea that this was even a thing! I'm tempted to try it on our busted up driveway. My only concern is a sunken block with a significant crack. I think I'll start with grinding the crack down to help with snow removal. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the great videos. I tried this on my driveway on two slabs, must have done something wrong. The next morning it was a nice color but to my dismay I can brush it off, it’s like dust and it rinses off with hose. Can you advise please
Thought I've seen all the vids and this pops up. Thanks again Mike. Also like the music channel. Really enjoy how much of a straight shooter you are and your dry humor with you and your friends is hilarious!
Hi Mike great video .I live in Salt Lake city, Utah.We don't have Portland cement in home Depot we have cement all is that the same and do I need put concrete glue in. Guys in store toll me that cement have everything in and it is ready for my project. I just want to do my driveway. Thanks for very good advice.
Hi Almir , I do not recommend cement all for driveways,, I know everybody sells Portland , they might be out, try other stores but remember that this resurface I show is last thing before replacement, thanks, Mike
Hi enginefast, I got a whole playlist, "concrete repair" and "concrete step repair" Mike haduck, it's mostly old school techniques but it worked for me, thanks Mike

Good video. That was a close one. Sounded like the help tried to unionize!
Hi Scot, it was my sister, I fired her fast. lol,. mike
Thank you Mike and John for your service and as always another great video! Sis needs to get you guys some coffee and give you a break. Lol
Thanks Bob I appreciate it, Mike
I ground down high spots on sidewalk like you did around 2;00, and it exposed lots of gravel which got ground a lot also. Now I worry that those spots are too slick for a patch to adhere. I'm talking about patching, fill and leveling, some spots maybe 3/8 deep but usually less, and feathering, not just a 'paint' mixture like you show in this video. Should I be concerned about the adhesion to smooth gravel ?
Hi Pj, I can't say unless I seen it but some times I just scar it up with a small diamond blade for it to stick better, thanks Mike
great video this idea of painting cement is great and quick good job
Thanks for all the great tips 👍👍
Thank you Psycho, I appreciate it. mike
Really appreciate all you do to help us. Surely can save a buck and it looks nice. Thanks
Thanks, mike
Thanks for doing these and the tips. No surface lasts forever. Asphalt you have to patch and seal every year. Concrete needs TLC, too. A patch and skim with Portland is a lot cheaper than replacing unless the Concrete has completely failed.
Thanks Jeff, it’s just a cheap fix before replacement, but better than nothing, thanks Mike
Hi Pappy, I would not be in a hurry I would do a couple samples first a wait and see, it is a last resort before replacement, thanks mike
Thanks pensive, I agree, anything that works, thanks ,mike
ok maybe epoxy or elastomeric with a little sand or just patch the chipped&cracked concrete on the garage floor with cement-all or vinyl patch? Thanks alot for your help Mike & great videos i learn alot of new & diff ways on doing things since im not a pro at it. I just mainly tuck point & do minor some brick replacement so watch ur videos all the time! tanks again!
Excellent information!
Thanks, Mike
Mike this works great, I just know I might have to do it every year
Man...your back must be in shambles at the end of the day. It looks good!
Thanks Denise. MIKE
Thanks for your very informative video. I'm planning on trying this in my carport. The concrete is pitted with plenty of small cracks.
Thank chucker , I appreciate it, mike
Thank you Mike. love your videos.
Thanks keith,, Mike
The best video ever , thank you mike
Thanks ,joe, mike
Great video Mike. What is the drawback of painting with Cement all. I used it and it stayed for 3 years. I put some glue when I mixed it and I wet the sidewalk and it worked and looked good. I used Cement all because I can't close my sidewalk for a long period of time. Should I use cement all again because it starting to fade. The video says that Cement all can be used from a feather edge. Thx Mike. .
Hi Dee, I dont know what to tell you, painting with cement all didnt last in my area, the winter killed it, but whatever works, thanks mike
two questions... Can the Portland be stained? also can/should a sealer be put over the resurface and does it help?..well...maybe two and a half..
Hi gittar, I would say it is just a covering till you need it again, so you can do a lot of different things but it all comes out the same, If that makes sense, thanks mike
If I use this same procedure on my basement floor will it last longer then a year? Thank you
Hi, It's just a covering, thanks, Mike
Would it be ok to make the paint a bit thicker to smooth out the concrete driveway over some heavy spalding? like adding sand say 1 to 1?
Hi sybo, I usually go over the Spalding spots first and then do the old school resurface, check my videos on concrete repair/patches, Mike haduck,
Very cool Mike. I had no idea that this was even a thing! I'm tempted to try it on our busted up driveway. My only concern is a sunken block with a significant crack. I think I'll start with grinding the crack down to help with snow removal. Thanks for the video!
If it's too deep, you might want to think about slab-jacking that sunken area before applying this Portland paint.
Hi Dan, GSM is right you might think of jack it up or out first, I hope it helps thanks mike
Thanks for the great videos. I tried this on my driveway on two slabs, must have done something wrong. The next morning it was a nice color but to my dismay I can brush it off, it’s like dust and it rinses off with hose. Can you advise please
Hi Tom, it take a few days to dry, I hope the surface was wet and you did it evening before sun went down for best results, thanks mike
How long does it last? Grate video thank you for sharing your experience.
Hi Daniel, it's a covering and a patch, our weather a year or two, thanks Mike
Thought I've seen all the vids and this pops up. Thanks again Mike. Also like the music channel. Really enjoy how much of a straight shooter you are and your dry humor with you and your friends is hilarious!
Thanks Thor, I appreciate it, mike
We used bond to bond lime and Portland cement. Doing it since the 70s
Thanks Larry, what area of the country do you live? And how does it hold up? Good to heR someone else does it, Mike
Thanks for the video. I always enjoy your tutorials.
Thanks T.A. I appreciate it. mike
can this work with top part of concrete that as over bleeding defect and got removed. we need to repair the top part only
Hi enginefast, I got a whole playlist, "concrete repair" and "concrete step repair" Mike haduck, it's mostly old school techniques but it worked for me, thanks Mike
Thank you again, Mike
Thanks Billy, Mike
I live in the north west of PA and it's more lake affect Snow and it can be very harsh
Hi Jen,, yep, it's just a covering before replacement, Mike
