Mike, I'm s ( young) 65 year old woman and I did this to my own Florida driveway. And it looks great. I'm a handy woman thanks to my uncle Lloyd. Thank you again for all your info.
My old house in Ontario either has cinder blocks or normal concrete blocks from about 1955 as the foundation, but some of the old walls in the basement are stone and lime mortar. It was rumored to be a very old house from the 1800's, and I see signs of that because the footings are all stones. Using the rapid set mortar mix has been a game changer in how to get underneath the blocks and rocks that sit on the old rock foundation and following your steps it has made a huge difference. Aside from doing some work on the outside, using that has dried up my basement, no smells aside from ripping the old oil tank out. New furnace and heat pump, basement with just that is very very different. I have used a 1 to 2 1/2 mix of type s cement (not mortar) to sand. I have used that as filler months ago following your steps, not having much time before winter. I purchased a big bag of pure portland cement which I keep dry in my kitchen. Next year, chimney, steps, sidewalks. The portland cement paint is a great idea that I will have to wait until spring to try.
I wish I had you as a teacher in school Mike I probably wouldn't have spent so much time looking out the window. I learned a lot from the videos not only about helping me "patch" my concrete but learning how to "not make a big deal" out of things.
5 years ago I resurfaced with rapid set cement all. It still looks brand new. Rapid set sells this little packet that makes it really runny and easy to spread. I used a squeegee.
Amazing video as usual! So good to see Honest Mike and you back at it again! You always bring videos that makes it informative and fun to watch! You and Honest Mike make a great duo!!

I've been talking about doing this to my mom and dad's 51 year old driveway in Minnesota to blank stares of disbelief .. YOU have made my case for the value of it as a short term cosmetic fix .. thank you Mike and Mike .. (Greg)
Honest Mike got into the power washing business! Good for him. paint and brick delivery won't pay the rent or the beer tab. I'm glad to see you have a helper. Mentor the young guys, teach them the trade and take a load off your back and knees.
Appreciate your old-school approach Mike. I calculated it and it $45 every of the year for the driveway for materials, if you did it every other year for 30 years, it would only cost $675 total. It's only $22.50 per year for materials oh, and of course you don't charge yourself for your own labor as a homeowner. I had my first call, and had a contractor come over this last Monday, he wanted $18,000 to rip out, and pour a new concrete slab for my thousand square foot concrete driveway. If you divide $18,000 by 30 years, that's $600 a year for materials. Cost prohibitive. The way you're doing it is the most economical and makes the most sense! And easy to do if you know how to hold a paintbrush and paint. I just saved $17,325. Plus there's no concrete going into landfills, and I can keep my original driveway intact, and it'll last indefinitely.
I do this same thing except that I also take my pump sprayer and apply some silane/siloxane sealer. Really adds some more longevity to the re-surfacing. Paint it with Portland!
Another fine video with tips for success. I liked the feathering of the mortar and the finale outcome. It’s a shame it’s an annual upkeep, but that’s what makes it look new. Thanks
I feel salt is really the thing to damage driveway if you live in a snow area. I instead to spread wood ash from fire place, just to per long my driveway’s life
Thank you so much Mr. No big deal. This is the video I been looking for. I have to resurface mine since the concrete companies in Midwest small town is just unreasonably to afford, and resurface such small job no one cares.

Could you show a closer shot of cracks you repaired then portland painted say after a couple of months if they showed up please? Couldn’t catch long enough shot in this video of how the portland covered cracks after dried. Thank you for all your knowledge!
Hi Brenda, most cracks in concrete are expansion cracks, it gets cold they open up and hot they expand, depends on the crack what you do to minimize that happening, sometimes caulking sometimes cement, a hair crack will almost always return, thanks Mike

Hey Mike. Quick question on how you feel of using "s mortar" with Portland added to it instead of just the Portland to paint on. I used the same technique with s mortar to restore cap stones on a retaining wall at my house that was deteriorating in spots badly. Sure beats ripping them out and having to dispose of them. Learned so much from your videos thank you!
Mike, thanks for all the great videos! Have learned a lot. Have repaired concrete driveway. Going to paint with Portland and glue to make it match now. The one question I didn't see answered in the videos was the drying time on the portland paint. How long from application to the time you can drive on it? Location Dallas/Ft Worth TX and temps 40s nite and 60s daytime. Thanks again
Hi Mike, I am really enjoying old school techniques in your videos. Learning a lot. The concrete paint is impressive!! along with many of your patch techniques. Do you have any examples of repairing hairline (less than 1/8") cracks in exposed aggregate driveway. I do not want to use the caulking as thye look like .... I was thinking of rubbing in some portland cement (or rapid set?) mixed with a bit of water and glue?? , rub it down with sponge before it sets up and then hit it with some mud wash. ..??
Mike I love your program and seen them all. However is there a program that you may have on installing and repairing foam moldings on homes. I’ve used what you have taught me on videos for many repairs down here in the tropics. Cement also blows out due to water and heat but very little. However, try to find someone to make repairs and they are scarce since many people don’t want to work due to Federal housing, food programs and other benefits. You have to do these small repairs yourself. Your program has been a blessing to me. If you can do a program on foam moldings, installation and repairs it would benefit many people. “Thanks for your program!”
Do you have any videos where you repair exposed aggregate slabs or driveways? My entire back patio and driveway on a hill is all pea gravel exposed aggregate and it’s not going well trying to fix it. I turn to you always, but maybe it’s not as popular in your neck of the woods. It’s at least 30 years old but an edge broke and I want to fix it for my dad
Very cool technique, and thank you for showing us the follow-up after 6 months! Have you considered or tested any techniques that may increase the durability of this technique? e.g., wet burlap for a couple days to allow more time to cure, or an acrylics cure & seal (same reason), or even a penetrating sealer to slow down water infiltration/ice formation in the cold weather?
I want to make an artsy catch basin for a downspout of my house. And - I want to re-point (? I think that's the correct term) some rock veneer to keep the wasps out. There's so many kinds of cement at the store. Portland, Mortar mix, Mason Mix, High Strength concrete, Sand/Topping mix. Argh. Help me pick? It's cheap, but the bags are very heavy!
Mike, I get a laugh out of the Honest Mike character in your program especially when he runs for city Mayer. “Vote for me I steal less!” Is this guy you in disguise or someone else since he looks like you? I like the character! Let me know.

Thank you so much for your answer to my first question. The bonding cement worked great on the interior wall repair. I have another question, please. What is the coldest temperature you can do this type of outdoor, drive patch and re-seal?
Mike! Do you have any more of these shirts? I see a shirt with a small logo on your store but I would love to get one with a big logo! My wife and I signed the lease to a studio space for our business (we print t-shirts and make art and other little trinkets for fun) and it's in the basement of an old brick schoolhouse. Solid deal but it's in rough shape. Been repairing some of the walls and windows and painting and all that but the floor has given us a run for the money. It's got water damage from years of it sitting damp and the corners of the room are a bit eroded and there's some really big uneven spots and trip hazards. I started by pouring a concrete repair compound around the edges of the room but I did a pretty bad job (added too much water and didn't smooth it out well) and I was worried that even though it bonded well that I would have to grind it all down. These videos have given me the confidence to make a patch and portland paint the top so it's smooth (enough) again. I know it won't last forever but it will be in a temperature and moisture regulated space with some lighter furniture over it so I'm not too worried about it. A lot better than the mess that was chipping away underneath it. Anyways just wanted to say thanks and maybe buy a shirt :-)
Thanks Alex, I am sure you will do fine with your repairs. I know I don't do much concerning the tee shirts but I just leave it up to the company and get a small commission, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck I really enjoy your videos. I’m also from NEPA a little north of Scranton in the Mid Valley. Thank you for the reply and keep up the good work.
may i consult you, what is the best way to repair scaled concrete floor of warehouse. it is already uneven and some chunks removed. like to get your old school ways
Good afternoon, Mike! Will concrete sealer will protect this painting job, so I don't do it every other year? And if yes, when time comes to repaint this driveway again, what should be used to remove that sealer? If it's necessary, of course. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience! Your big fan.
Hi Deborah, it's just a old school, depression Era makeover before replacement, some will give it a good power washing before they do it, that helps a lot, thanks Mike
As always, great informative video, Mike. Wanted to ask you if I can paint my chimney stack in the basement with s-mortar. Thanks for your time and wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and a healthy New Year. Be well, Mike.
They heat and dehydrate the portland to a point that as soon as it hits water it does react and solidifies. There are additives to speed up or slow down the reaction.
@@philindeblanc Been thinking about your post Phil and it makes total sense. If you try to add water to rapid set to stretch it out it seems to make the situation worse. That stuff will literally set under water. Also, here in the UK one bag will differ from the next. One mix will give you just enough time, the next bag will set to quick. Maybe shelf life comes into the equation ?. Anyway, thanks again.
Hi mike. I love your videos. Do you have any experience or knowledge about resurfacing specific products? Specifically Leggario concrete repair, quickcrete recap or polymer products? I feel like I can only trust your opinion because to me, Bob Ross is the Mike Haduck of painting, not the other way around.
Hi, I really only know and use what I trust , a lot of the new products I am not Sure of, but if I do use them after a few years I might do a review on them, thanks mike
Would you recommend doing this top coat method to concrete patio that is 10 old and has the entire surface wearing away slowly ? It's an extension of a patio that's 40 yr old and is in good condition. We poured the newer patio section ourselves in the summer at about 11 am on a sunny day and just left it to dry. Years later I started reading about concrete and watching your videos I think we should have kept the concrete wetted during the drying time to slowly cure. I think the fast drying is what caused the surface to slowly wear away and expose the tiny aggregate making it rough looking. Would that hold onto the existing concrete and slow down the erosion? Is that flim flam man Honest Mike still selling questionable tools at the flee market. "Honest Mike for President".
Hi, I had a concrete company give me bad concrete a few times where the whole top spalled off, my guess is that is what heppend, every once in a while you get a bad load, no matter what I did every two or three years I would have to go back and patch it up, nothing I seen lasted more than that, thanks Mike
I have similar old pavement that I want to resurface myself. Will RapidSet Cement-All be a good replacement as resurfacer? since Cement All can apply as thin as featheredge or 1/4". Should Cement-All last longer compare to the old school cement wash? Thanks!
I like your old school techniques. People these days would rip that slab out and pour fresh, love that you restore and fix instead of replace
Thanks Integra, Mike

A lot better than the mess that was chipping away underneath it.
Anyways just wanted to say thanks and maybe buy a shirt :-)
Thanks Alex, I am sure you will do fine with your repairs. I know I don't do much concerning the tee shirts but I just leave it up to the company and get a small commission, thanks Mike
how about a floor buffer?
Hi Michael, I don't see what good it would do, thanks mike
What if you live in the south ea st and we are wanting to do this now in December with temps atriums 60s durning the days
Hi Junnie, the cooler Temps are always better in my view, thanks Mike
I've been using Vinyl Crete for the cracks. It seems to work pretty good, but it's pricey. I'll try your technique. Thanks!

Thanks Tom, Mike
Mike can it be spread with a broom so no bending over. I bet it is much easier on the back.
Hi Arcee, I don't think so, it would have to be very soft?, Mike
Is there anything special in the concrete resurfacer or is it just basically portland?
Hi Rob , just Portland with a little glue. It's only a patch before replacement, thanks Mike
Hi ,check again on my playlist, " concrete repair" that might give you some good ideas, thanks Mike
HI kapa, sealers could be slippery, what I did here was just freshen it up, so if I redid it every year or so it's not a big deal, thanks Mike
Planning on doing this, is it possible to add color to this. As always enjoy your videos and look forward to new ones.
Hi Ed, colors are tough, it's usually. Only good for a year or two then you got to keep it up, Mike
@@MikeHaduck Thanks Mike, I thought that to. I also live in northern Illinois with weather similar to yours.
I can’t find that bag at home depot
Is there a new bag I need to look for??
Hi Ae, maybe lowes, Mike
I found it but it’s a different looking bag (Portland cement commercial grade quikrete type 1)??
How many pounds is the bag you get sir?
Wow!!!
Thanks Sammy, Mike
Is there a product that will make the resurface application last longer than 1 or 2 years? I was looking at NewCrete Concrete Resurfacer. Thanks.
Hi Alex, my system is a covering just like a asphalt sealer I am just preserving the life, I haven't found anything else that makes sense, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck Thank you, I’ve learned a lot and appreciate your videos. Thank you for making them.
can you use that paint over caulk?
Hi Halle, it's just a covering, if the caulking let's it, thanks Mike
Will this process work on a driveway with multiple deeply embedded oil stains? If not, what do you recommend?
Hi Deborah, it's just a old school, depression Era makeover before replacement, some will give it a good power washing before they do it, that helps a lot, thanks Mike
Honest Mike needs one of those surface cleaner attachments for his fancy red pressure washer. What do you think about concrete sealers Mike?
Hi Sunny, I know some of them could be slippery in winter, I guess it depends where you use it, thanks Mike
As always, great informative video, Mike. Wanted to ask you if I can paint my chimney stack in the basement with s-mortar. Thanks for your time and wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and a healthy New Year. Be well, Mike.
Hi Philip, I might just fill in the holes and use a masonry paint, but that's my opinion, Merry Christmas, Mike
What do they put in rapid set to make set so quickly ?. Is it a chemical reaction or something else ?. Anyway, nice job Mike.
Hi Darren, I can't say but it works great, Mike
They heat and dehydrate the portland to a point that as soon as it hits water it does react and solidifies. There are additives to speed up or slow down the reaction.
@@philindeblanc Thanks Phil.
Thanks, Mike
@@philindeblanc Been thinking about your post Phil and it makes total sense. If you try to add water to rapid set to stretch it out it seems to make the situation worse. That stuff will literally set under water. Also, here in the UK one bag will differ from the next. One mix will give you just enough time, the next bag will set to quick. Maybe shelf life comes into the equation ?. Anyway, thanks again.
Mike is this your neighbor the honest Mike on the video? Great character.
Hi JlR, yep, that's him, lol, Mike
Hey Mike the chick was cute ask her to give you a little shaky Pudding ! LOL!
Thanks Pete, Mike
IMO this will stop the spalding from getting worse
Hi, it's a deterant from getting worse ivwould say, thanks Mike
Thanks!
Hi Wayne, I only use the rapid set for filling in cracks, I won't use it as a resurface, it dosent hold up, mike
NICE JOB WELL DONE 👏 ✔ 👍 👌 😀 🙌 👏 ✔ 👍 👌 😀 🙌 👏 ✔ 👍 👌 😀 🙌 👏 ✔ 👏 ✔ 👍 👌 😀 🙌 👏 ✔ 👍

Why re surface?
Why not?
Prices have gone up about 50% so this fix is no longer about $45 more like $70
Thanks Pearl, I agree, Mike
When you gotta say that you’re “honest”? It means you probably are not…🤦♂️
Hi Cas,, "honest Mike" is our area is a used car salesman, thanks Mike
Mike the Prince 👑 of Portland
Thanks again, Mike
Looks great!! Your poor knees! I know mine won't take that anymore smh
