This is what RUclips is supposed to be. Thank you for sharing your knowledge Mike. God bless the old timers.
Thanks Bill, God bless, Mike
It still is this way. Your algorithm is your fault.
Thanks Mike, over the years I've been watching your vids. The knowledge I gained has helped me through the past several years. I do my own home improvement and repair. I've repaired a old foundation on a very old house 🏚, repaired a walkway up my yard and now going to try and resurface my back yard with Portland. Thanks You for all the information!
Thanks Paul, I appreciate hearing that, Mike
Thank you bro your very informative with concrete appreciated
Thanks flav,, Mike
good round up and nice wall
Thanks Savio, Mike
I've also watched Mike's Chevy truck ...info.. currently I have a 1995 Chevy truck and am rebuilding about 100% myself am a Retired Machinists and a family owned machine shop since 1975...am a online transmission student at 60 years of age......and going to carb and HEI DISTRIBUTOR AND ROLLER CAM AND VORTEC HEADS OF 1996 TO A 1995....AM AT MY SALVAGE YARD DAILY AT SUMMERTIME....I LOVE TECHNOLOGY....AND HAVE STUDIED for years....I guess Mike was happy with a two barrel carb....I love those older trucks ya bet
Indianapolis Indiana
Ya can .........put those vortec cam roller camshaft in those older Chevy trucks...and roller lifters...too.
I get my roller camshaft at my salvage yard because they roll and wear isn't that much at all so.
Run... Diesel 10w 40..oil in those older trucks.
Add STP OIL TREATMENT....a day before a oil change...
Because oil companies have removed zinc...from motor oil rummer I've heard of.....and Stp and Lucas has zinc in the treatment....but don't leave it in a motor....add before a oil change....but yes vortec heads and vortec roller camshaft will make a older Chevy truck run great.
Instructions are on utube..... difficulty isn't all that much.
Good to have a older trucks running great as gasoline won't be forever no
That's my Portland ...for...now
Vortec camshaft and engines heads begin in 1996..
And they can go on early 1980s 350s
I would remove anything above 1998 far as Vortec to older Chevy 350s
Indianapolis Indiana...God bless USA
And a HEI DISTRIBUTOR....also.... however most 1980s have the HEI DISTRIBUTOR.....
Great info! Thanks!
Thanks Nunya, Mike
I heard aboutMASON WORK on the Portland Cement Association website, long time ago 🖐👍✌,thanks for the video 🧱👍
Thanks Charles, Mike
Hello, Mike and happy new year to you and the family. This 24 minute video is the quintessential master class on masonry. Thank you for sharing all your years of craftsmanship. Looking forward to many more of your videos in 2023. Be well.
Thanks Philip, Happy New Year, Mike
Your videos are Awesome Mike , Thank you for all of the tips and knowledge Man.
Thanks Robert, Mike
I live in the Lehigh Valley. We have a lot of Cement plants around here. A big name is Heidelberg. My dad worked for Allentown Cement Company for many years before retiring. I have never learned as much about how to use cement than your videos. I love your RUclips channel. Thank you! Hope all is well for you in sunny Florida. Enjoy your retirement.
Thanks patrick,, Mike
Professor Haddock I've watch all your videos at least 3 times a piece. You are extremely knowledgeable with anything cement and everything Portland. I'm proud of y'all!
Thanks for the kind words, thanks Mike
The state of Oregon annually begs Mike to relocate there.
Thanks For the offer but I actually started living in Florida, lol, Mike
@@MikeHaduck Oregon will miss you Mike.
I remember the China and Scandy visit videos when they came out and the finding of how they all did their sidewalks and how astonishing it was. Mike is a great honest person. Word to the wise, granite blocks for where water touches is what the lesson was if I remember right. Love it!
Thanks Tofan, I appreciate the kind words, Mike
Happy New Year Mr. Haduck! This in-depth video on Portland Cement keeps it simple yet says so much. Thanks for taking the time to teach us. Cheers Charles
Thanks Charles, Happy New Year, Mike
In St Louis Mo we use type N for pointing. Most of our bricks are 100+ years old and have a hard face but softer core. It breaks my heart when I see someone who pointed with portland. It pops the brick face off during winter and leaves the soft core. On the old buildings they use O when pointing as the brick was fired some 200 years ago. We can also get lime since many of the hoses have lime plaster on the inside of the brick wall and the inner walls & celling on the oak lath. If you ever want to see some amazing beautiful brick work come to St Louis we have some of the best in the country.
Hi Scott, I got a video out called " Lime , mortar or portland " what should I use?, I think I say it best there, thanks Mike
Sir you are a gift to the world!
Thanks Emil, I appreciate the kind words, Mike
Thanks for the scripture Mike, we need more food for thought in this crazy world.
Thanks Kathleen, I appreciate hearing that, I consider it a seed for those who don't know the Bible, Mike
Thank you Mike. You've given me the courage to do some stonework. ♥ wish me luck!
Thanks ziemian,, I am sure you will do fine, Mike
In my America we take three weeks vacation after digging the hole. Happy new year!
Thanks Paul, lol, Happy new year, Mike
Mike thank you! It no doubt takes considerable effort to make these very fact filled videos for us. This guy right here for one, is highly appreciative! Be Blessed brother.
Thanks Jeff God bless, Mike
Awesome information you got me interested in mason work, I resurfaced my steps and Portland painted my sidewalk. The neighbors thought it was new concrete. Thanks for everything I do these projects with my two teenage sons, we are learning together.👍
Thanks Sisco, Mike
What is your choice for making a counter top? Like in a kitchen?
Hi kc, my choice would be real granite, thanks Mike
Best explanation yet Mike!
Thank you, and God bless you my brother in Christ!
Thanks Rick, God bless, Mike
hey mike! i'm 41 and lifelong contractor of all sorts. i have gotten into stone work on my personal property, and needed to figure out how to mortar this stuff. being that i am in Lebanon, right down the road from you apparently, i found my critical local advice.
i am working with mountain stone from my family's land on the first ridge mountain before blue mountain, little mountain. in addition to the endless supply of that stuff, i also purchased some beautiful white limestone from a barn building demolition in lancaster county. more than half of those blocks were facing pieces, really nice stuff. and i have also been picking stone from the quitipalihila creek- which i think was an old canal- back behind carmeuse lime in anville. its crazy, im picking blue limestone blocks right from the creek.. haha.
anyway, you got me going man, and i appreciate it. i would love to come meet you for a coffee sometime! cheers!
Hi Zach. Thanks for the offer, I moved to Florida, but I am sure you will do fine, thanks Mike
Why is Portland so Expensive lately?
Hi Michael, gov spending and policy which causes inflation, can't think of a better answer, lol, Mike
We open holes and take vacation in Europe/Scandinavia too. :) Wishing you a great new year!
Thanks Lars, I heard that, lol, Happy new year, thanks, Mike
An absolute wealth of knowledge
Thanks,, Mike
This was probably the best video I have seen in a very long time. Thanks for all the great information. You explained things in such a great way and easy to understand!
Thanks Michelle, Mike
I’ve been following your channel for several years, I just painted my concrete sidewalks with Portland and then I had to fix a cracked concrete pad with some Portland, cost me $17. You’ve taught me everything!
Thanks reaper, Mike
I really appreciate your videos. Sharing your knowledge of a lifetime (well, second gen as well!) of commercial masonry work is so valuable to the DIY homeowner who needs to use cement, mortar, etc. for projects and maintenance work! Knowing what the best approach to take and what mix/product to use is more than half the battle! Plus I love to hear the eastern PA accent!
Thanks spkay,, Mike
Hi Mike I watch your videos over and over never get tired of them , you do a great job and it's easy to tell you love your work.
Thanks Rocco, Happy New year, Mike
Thanks to you Mike I have had no problems with my older home projects from walls, to stair repairs, to foundation work.
Many many thanks from a rookie in Canada ~
Thanks C, I appreciate hearing that, Mike
..who wants to come back from vacation and dig a hole. No matter what material I'm working with, I've always got a bucket of Portland on the truck. Magic stuff. Happy New Year Mike! Auguri!

Hi, my dad watches and loves all of your videos and uses them to help him, we all appreciate you being here and sharing your ways 😄
Thanks, I appreciate it, Mike
I love it when you make these vids and explain the mystery around cement ... a HUGE learning experience. Happy New Year Mike! Thanks again for allll the vids during 2022.
Thanks Thor, Happy new year, Mike
But vortec heads at a salvage yard...1996 to 1999
It's very common to get cracked heads....so good luck if your hunting them... however inspection before purchasing ya can get lucky and find a good set
Thanks, Mike
So can you use just Portland cement to cover old tile. I used this special cement blend with a brush to adhere to existing old epoxy bath tub. Then I primed and painted it with wall paint. Then I faux painted it to look like marble. It's held up for 12 years. Now, could I just use plain portland cement the same way? The cement blend I used costs $160 for a 40 pound bag. Quite a bit higher than portland cement. Could the cement blend I am using be some sort of plaster? Does that use portland cement, too?
Hi, I only used the Portland paint as an old school depression Era fix to save money. It's only a covering, I would talk with the folks at the paint store, thanks Mike
Mike, until I found your channel, I would have never attempted any type of masonry. I always felt like it was just too far beyond my grasp of capabilities. Thank you for breaking things down and helping us understand what's going on beneath the surface, no pun intended.
Thanks 814, I appreciate it, Mike
Absolutely a superb video … incredibly informative… thanks again for all the vids
Thanks Thor, Mike
Hey mike hope all is well happy new year. I’m a 32 year old mason from chester county pa I’m starting to put up some videos. I’ve been watching you for a long time and love your work. Thanks for inspiring me to continue in the trade and to put out some videos. Thanks for all you do

Happy New Year Mike! May it be healthy, happy and prosperous! Looking forward to many new videos this year.
Thanks Clint, Happy New Year, Mike
I am working on a 500sqft patio. Quartzite 3/8” - 1/2” thick. I have similar weather in northern PA. Using 1 part portland and 2 sand. Per your recommendation. I also followed your suggestion about grouting as I lay the stone down, I am trying to keep it clean, and I wire brushed it the next day however, it looks like there are still some areas that have cement on the stones. Again, the stone is extremely hard. Should I use a diluted Mirotic acid 1:10? What do you suggest?
Love you videos!!!!
Hi, usually you will have a film and then after the whole patio is done I use a light acid wash but ,I would do a little sample area first, if the area was sponge well at first cleaning you should have no problem, thanks Mike
Straight portland cement is not easy to find at the big box. I have to go to my local hardware store.
Hi, I have noticed that in Florida, thanks Mike
Thanks Mike , you explain things well , a bricklayer once told me that mortar was not to stick the bricks together , but to keep them apart .....what ? ...a garden wall will support itself with gravity , but each brick has different dimensions so a course of mortar is needed to compensate the irregularities to stay with the string line itherwise the wall would be higgly piggly .
Hi Margaret, that's a way to look at it, thanks Mike
Happy New Year Mike!!
Happy New year, Mike
Happy new year Mike.. peace n love from Cumbria UK 🇬🇧 ❤️
Thanks Happy new year, Mike
Help. Whats the mix to use between limestone patio pavers. Pretty big gaps since it was pressure washed.
Hi, check out my videos ,"stone patio installation " I show all the repairs, usually, in ne pa I use 2 sand to 1 portland, but down south it's diffrent, thanks Mike
wait a minute..are you saying the USA is not efficient at public works repairs??? im shocked lol
Thanks, Mike
Question for you - planning a DIY pour for a few backyard steps and small pad, is standard quickrete ok or should I be using portland with a 1-2-3 mix?
Hi, I usually add a good trowel full of Quikrete is those instances, my opinion, but I have videos on that too, thanks, Mike
Mike, I have used your portland paint techique on porch, steps and walls. Thank you. Repairing about 14" of exposed concrete the width of my garage floor (about 16'), that is the strip from the driveway to just inside to where the garage door lands because of spalling. Rest of my floor is covered in plastic perforated floor tiles, so don't really care about the concrete under there (sealed it a couple of years ago). I ground it all down smooth, have a few minor cracks and pock marks. I want to seal it with a penetrating masonry sealer, but first, want the concrete to look uniform, so was thinking the portland paint approach, wait 30 days, then apply the sealer. Do you think the portland and water paint will hold up to to the tires when I park my car in the garage?
Hi, it's just a covering, I don't use it for inside garage floors, I might fill the holes and cracks but would usually paint it with a garage floor product, thanks Mike
I want to refinish a step with portland. Do you think I should wait 30 days to before putting some type of sealant on it. From Delaware
Hi squests, ,, I have a whole playlist on concrete step repair, I show what I do and why, I hope it helps, thanks Mike
HELP! Hi Mike, I’m Claudia from San Antonio, Texas and it’s been over 100 degrees F ☀️🔥 everyday for a while now and I’m melting 🫠 lol I love watching your videos but I need yr help. I’m attempting to fix the foundation on my house 😬 The outside layer is cracking and falling apart, I believe it’s called parging. I’m going to try to do the 1 part Portland and 2 parts sand unless you think I should do something different for my area? Also, what kind of sand do I purchase. I only see 2 options at Lowes and Home Depot which are play sand, all purpose sand. I don’t want to mix in the wrong thing, thanks!
Hi Claudia, I have a whole playlist called " foundation repair " Mike haduck, I show what I used in each circumstance, thanks Mike
HNY23 Mike thank you for an interesting video. Merry Christmas...
Thanks John, Merry Christmas, Mike
Mike you make everything so much easier to understand...love your videos! I have a specific question about what proportion of sand to Portland that you would suggest for the floor of a fireplace?
Hi user, most would use firebrick, some use fireclay ,some use portland and sand, I have used 2 sand to one Portland for the joints but fire will eventually eat everything up, it depends on what you are building it for, where, what and why, thanks Mike
Mike can you tell us why we do not build bridges and walls out of stone anymore? Here in Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania there are many examples of these types of structures made with sandstone that are in great shape after 100 years or more. Modern concrete seem to deteriorate after 50. I believe the Old School way was better!
Its called dirty capitalism and guaranteeing yourself a job.
Hi Charles, most stone quarries disappeared with the development of concrete, it is mostly over with but I am trying to keep it alive, thanks Mike
This video was great thanks. I'm filling a lathe bed casting to increase rigidity, so I was hoping for a overview of the different mixes maybe even some background glad I landed on this video very entertaining.
Thanks, Mike
Around here, 4500psi concrete is supposed to be frost proof, and 4800psi is both frost and salt proof. Probably need some real curing time to get that strength I fear.
Hi elb, I can't say I seen any concrete that was frost proof, weather will get to it eventually, but thanks, Mike
Hi Mike, I thought lime was added to make the mix sticky, and "mortar" was basically a sand mix of Portland cement. Do i have those both wrong?
What do you use as a primer coat and a top coat when fixing old horizontal concreate?
Hi Larry, I show what I use in each of my videos, but for a better understanding of cement products, I got a video out called" lime ,mortar or portland " what should I use?, thanks Mike
Mike I watched one of your videos on painting sidewalk with portland cement, sand & glue & you painted it with a brush. Can you please give me link or title of that video as want to show it to my guy who’s going to do my sidewalk? All the ones I’m finding now show you using quickrete & want the one with portland mixture hand brushed. Thank you cuz really need this done!
Hi Brenda, it was resurface concrete driveway, but remember it a quick patch and fix before replacing, or just a covering, sometimes it has to be redone every spring, depending on the weather, thanks Mike
We know how to make it easy in Scandinavia. And long lasting. At least it used to be like that.
You got it spot on Mike.
//Richard
Thanks , Richard, Mike
Mike, what do you think about using a “sealant” on driveways, sidewalks, or steps? Does it help and what type sealants would you use? Many thanks!!
Hi flyguy, it depends on who you talk to, in my area sealants are slippery especially in the winter, thanks Mike
Hello. I was told about from a customer I'm doing work for I'd like to talk with you about rebar and my experience with it
Hi Stephen, I only show in my videos what and where I use it. I do have a video, should I use rebar, yes or no? Mike haduck, that might help. Thanks Mike
I don't understand why you don't use concrete pavers to make sidewalks. Much easier to repair and they're more resistant to water.
Hi Pang, I have a video out called "sidewalks ( old school vrs. New school) Mike haduck, that might help, thanks Mike
Will swine blood really make it hydration proof? I saw that on the "History" channel years and years ago. Doesn't sound right to me, what is your opinion
Hi, I don't sound right to me but all those old masons had their own recipes, thanks Mike
Can you make a video on crystalline admixtures to make concrete more waterproof?
Hi Pang, I never heard of water proof concrete, Thanks Mike
Mike I have a low spot in my patio the collects water I want to add concrete to change pitch what concrete do you recommend, I live in Long Island
Hi Gary, I got a whole playlist on " concrete patches" Mike haduck I show what I use in each circumstance, thanks, Mike
Can Portland be used to resurface the face of old concrete steps? I'm in Ohio.
Hi, I have a whole playlist on "concrete patches" Mike haduck, I show what I use in each circumstance, thanks Mike
all our roads are bitumen the primemovers turn the roads into a bmx track at times. you guys have a hard time with concrete here in Australia concrete lasts decades being so hot and dry.
Thanks, I believe that, Mike
very glad to see your video brother ❤❤🌹
nd how r u ❤
how are going life over there. ❤❤❤❤bro.
All good, thanks Mike
Indianapolis and am getting better with Portland as a beginner yes...
In fact here in Indianapolis I can get a broken bag at Lowe's for $1.00 per damaged bag
Thanks Jerry, that's a good thing, Happy New Year, Mike
How do you use Portland for stucco finish (hiding sins)?
Hi Daniel, I show what cement I use in all my videos and playlist, " foundation repair" and " stucco installation " thanks Mike
Hi Mike, I have old concrete with cracks. I know that anything I do will just be a patch. But some patches are better than others. I hope you make a video about patching cracked concrete. For instance, do you use a diamond saw to widen the crack to get the sand and Portland in? By the way, I've had great success with 1 Portland 2 Sand in Oregon, even though it's warmer than Pennsylvania. Thanks for your great videos, and Happy New Year!
Thanks , every situation is different, I got that whole playlist on " concrete repair" all my techniques are there, Mike
@@MikeHaduck Thank you.. I always watch your videos when they came out, but I didn't know about your playlists.

Thanks for your response. The only video I can find is CONCRETE PATCHES (Part 8) Mike Haduck (Sidewalks)
It's located in CONCRETE SIDEWALKS playlist. Parts 1 through 7 are missing.
The video shows how to repair large voids, not narrow cracks. In Oregon, water runs into cracks and washes the soil out from beneath. Then a huge repair is required. Thanks anyway.
Hi ,I just went to RUclips and typed in " concrete patches" Mike haduck, and they were all there, thanks mike
HI Mike and Happy New Year. I notice that a lot of Mason's typically do not wear a dust mask when mixing dry ingredients or breaking stone/block. Can you talk about the "dust" and if there are any health impacts from it? I assume holding your breath, working up wind, using a wet saw is the way to go but do you ever find yourself grabbing a dust mask in a given situation? Great videos as always and thank you for all the valuable information.
Hi Lucas, I guess I do the best to avoid it, but try and where a dust mask when it's necessary, thanks, Mike
You are correct about the dust and especially if you handling pure lime.I have mixed thousands of batches of mortar with a mixer and never wore a mask but when I think about it I should wear one.Pure lime for sure though.
@@MikeHaduck Thank you for the reply!

When they made the Hoover Dam, they said it’ll take 100 years to solidify or something. Does that mean the Portland in the middle is still damp? What’s holding it up, the weight of it? I heard it’s supposed to last 10,000 years. I don’t know about that one..
Hi Joe, I heard that too, I guess time will tell, thanks Mike
Hey Mike! Thank you for sharing your accrued knowledge. Can Portland be used to make mortar or is that a no? Thank you!
Hi Backswell, I have a video called "lime , mortar or portland" what should I use? Mike Haduck, I explain it there, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck Thanks Mike ! God bless
Does rebar rot away in house foundation ?
It, will eventually but might take a couple lifetimes, thanks Mike
can you do a video on weep holes when building a brick house???????
Hi Klaus, weep holes are mostly commercial construction, , the new school brick house with were holes are used are not always necessary, brick work is a dying thing, everybody has gone to stucco or stick on stone ,but I will keep that in mind, thanks mike
@@MikeHaduck ok thanks i saw that and was just wondering about it.
Great advise❤
Thanks Tom, Mike
Mike, if you make a mix that would stand up to the cold and freezing of Pennsylvania and you let that mix set up in Florida and let it bake in the summer and swelter in the humidity and rain and hurricanes that Florida gets, would it last as long as whatsoever mix ratio they typically use in Florida? Would there be disadvantages with Pennsylvania mix in Florida weather?
Hi Joe, all I know is they use a lot weaker mixes down here, I would say it is mostly for expansion purposes, now on the concrete buildings I can't say, I haven't been here long enough to know what's up, thanks Mike
Can I dry pour Portland cement
Hi tren, I would not dry pour anything, thanks, Mike
Hi, Mike I moved to SW Florida and am resetting the sunken pavers around my community pool. The pool guy said I should be mixing the base with some Portland. I’m thinking maybe 5:1 paver base:Portland . What do you think?
Hi tracking, I have used that and it worked fine for me, but I would think a lot depends on the situation and what your doing, thanks Mike
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I’ve learned a lot from you over the years!

Even more complicated with NHL (naturally hydrated lime) which can make a mortar with sand, and 'hydrated lime' which can't. I've been caught out once with that.
Hi Jack, it's hard to even find lime in my area anymore, thanks Mike
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Mike may the lord continue to bless and keep you in good health.🙏
