  • The Stanley Parable is a story-based video game designed and written by developers Davey Wreden and William Pugh. The game carries themes such as choice in video games, the relationship between a game creator and player, and predestination/fate.
    In the game, the player guides a silent protagonist named Stanley alongside narration by British actor Kevan Brighting. As the story progresses, the player is confronted with diverging pathways. The player may contradict the narrator's directions, which if disobeyed will then be incorporated into the story. Depending on the choices made, the player will encounter different endings before the game restarts to the beginning.
    The Stanley Parable was originally released in 2011, as a free mod for Half-Life 2 by Wreden. Together with Pugh, Wreden later released a stand-alone remake using the Source engine under the Galactic Cafe studio name. The remake recreated many of the original mod's choices while adding new areas and story pathways, as well as overhauling the game's graphics entirely. A further expanded edition titled The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe was released in 2022.

I sure as hell had the wacky site name down, that's for sure. I probably should have known from the layout of the review that drove the narrator insane that it was in fact Steam. "And Stanley was happy." I've always thought that the original "Freedom" ending is, strangely, the most satisfying one. Maybe mostly because of the music, and of these final, simple, peaceful words : "And Stanley was happy."

    • @lukegavin124
      @lukegavin124 Год назад +52

      It makes you wonder if blindly following instructions is actually the best way to go through life.
      I mean obviously not but it's still kind of the message the game wants to portray. After all, the narrator does have a happy ending in mind for stanley, one that he directly negates and interferes with when he goes off script, often leading to unfortunate consequences

    • @ludovicdisson3668
      @ludovicdisson3668 Год назад +41

      @@lukegavin124 I don't think the message behind TSP is that deep, honestly. TSP is mostly meant as a satire against some stupid or weird things in video games, like the fact that a player character can miraculously guess the combination of a safe, or that if the player appears to be lost, the game will attempt to put them back on the right track (the adventure line, which I believe is a direct reference to Fable 2 and 3)
      I think the goal of the freedom ending, and the entire game, is to show the irony that, in some games, like some open-world RPGs where the player is supposed to have absolute freedom, (looking at you The Elder Scrolls) it's only possible to progress through the game and to reach the best ending by following a very specific and straightforward path, thus negating the whole freedom aspect of the game.
      Now, if you want to apply that morale to real life, I guess it all depends on your personal beliefs about God and free will.

    • @PolInKenexel
      @PolInKenexel Год назад +17

      @@ludovicdisson3668 you went even more deep for some reason lol
      But for me the main message is that there is no message, or better said, that the message can be reinterpreted by anyone that enjoys the product, making the product not longer about the author, but the player/consumer
      And the frustration that it implies to try to make the world to appreciate your art, but realizing that in real life, everything is subjective and nobody will *truly* accept something different from their perspective, even if it's objectively true (including myself, implying that if someone replies to this comment with a different meaning i won't change my perspective making me kinda... An hypocrite? Idk)

      Thing about it though? That's also the last line in the opening cutscene. The freedom ending is most brilliant to me because of the irony, like literally the narrator says "no longer would anyone tell him where to go, what to do, or how to feel"
      and then: "Stanley stepped through the open door" "Stanley felt the cool breeze upon his skin" deadass the game is almost making fun of you, neverMIND the fact that the freedom ending is achieved by just going along with what the narrator says anyway. One of the greatest scenes in fiction period.

    I have a theory, that the man that speaks on the tape recorder in the bucket version of the vent ending IS the bucket.
    The bucket vent ending has a guy speaking about the buckets power. I think the bucket was actually normal and he was crazy. And gambhorra’ta turned him into a monster and transferred his soul into the bucket, because he stole something from gambhorra’ta (as the bucket said in the bucket version of the out of map ending) and in the bucket out of map ending the bucket turns into a monster and gets killed by Stanley. And the voice the narrator voice for the bucket sound like the bucket is crazy just like the guy on the tape recorder. My theory is the man on the tape recorder is the bucket. - a computer
    - broom closet
    - the most serious table in history (very serious indeed)
    - mannequin waifu
    - Adventure Line™
    - fern.
    I imagine Narry gathering them all together in that cellar and having a tea party with them, like a little girl with her toys, venting to them about his barely concealed jealousy for Bucket and Stanley. "It should've been a one-time gag, I only allowed it because he said that it was just some friendly bucket he knows from college, and I trusted him! I put my trust in him because it never even _occured_ to me to doubt the strenght of our relationship, and now look where we are! Computer, have you been on the AO3 website recently? There are even _fanfics_ about them now, gosh, this is outrageous! That he would choose some blasted bucket over me, after I've given him the best years of my life - oh no-no-no-no, never. If he chose to replace me with an inanimate object, then so will I. Goodbye Stanley, it was horrible knowing you! Ha! Now Stanlurine is my new Stanley - ooohh, I can't wait to see the look of jealousy in his eyes...".

    the space ending makes me so sad tho :( hearing the narrator’s silly little laugh for the first time and then THROWING IT AWAY :(((

    Amazing how you do the nodding or head shaking, dancing and all this stuff, makes the video interesting and adds so much personality! And the dedication in the art ending, must have been so painful... great job!

    There's actually a little bit more dialogue in the Confusion Ending after the Line(TM) leads you back to the office, by simply returning to the no-doors room again.

    Holy shit 6 hours of ending. This game really is a lot bigger than i thought. Why do I feel that the confusion ending is one of the later ones tho. I mean it gives away so much of the narrator it's actually crazy. Way more than the other Endings early on

    i just bought the stanley parable (though i didn't buy the ultra deluxe version unfortunately) and the zending was one of the hardest endings for me purely due to the fact i was taking away the narrator's happiness :[ im probably going to play it again sometime in the future and that'll be the day i hop right back to the zending and just vibe
    im mostly just watching this video to see all the content i'm missing :]c (plus it's nice to not feel guilty about your own curiosity, isn't it?)
    i do want to mention that my games for the games ending were minecraft and portal, idk if it changes through each time the ending is received or if it changes between versions (i guess i'll have to look that up)
    (the narrator made a dirt house :]) (EDIT: 2:35:40 AWWW YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA)

    even in points in the game that aren't supposed to be scary or strange, if the narrator doesn't talk for a long time, it still gets uncomfortable because you're so used to hearing him😭
