Totally agree with you, Chuck! Why buy leads if you can build your own right? It might take some manual work, but the important is that you're building quality over quantity. Google is a great platform to find prospects. You can search for companies and then look for the decision-makers and offer them services. In case Google doesn't provide their info, there are third-party search tools to find their contact information.

Jonathan, my brother has been getting all of our leads from thumbtack. The issue with that is the amount of money he spends a month on these leads that more often then not go nowhere. Now we do great work and have nothing but 5 star reviews on thumbtack. Its been an entire year now that we have been in business and looking back on our year all of our best jobs that we made the best money on were definitely not the direct thumbtack people. This is because my little brother being new to the world of conducting business felt the need to have to be the lowest bid in order to get it. Now the crazy thing is. We have a website but have not generated a single customer from it... Why? The answer is SEO. Stands for search engine optimisation. Unless someone. So do yourself a favor and watch a few videos on what exactly that is. Im guessing by now you probably already have. And so next thing to do is either dedicate a shit load of time to learning how to perfect those skills which to be honest could be very time consuming. So you pay someone else to do it right? I spent a couple weeks trying to find the right company to give my money too and after sitting through a bunch of sales calls i finally went with a company by the name of town square. They will help you to build the website as well as walk you through how and why they do it the way they do for the best SEO. To be honest with you they do a great job at helping you to understand but so do a lot of companies. But the main reason i went with them was simply because their monthly rate was the most affordable. 300 a month. And they have 30 thousand return customers that pay that. Some even pay more because they have some extra services like facebook management and stuff. Or you can really start spending some dough and start running adds. But it all takes time 3 to 6 months before googles algarythms start recognizing your business and start getting your business listed on that first page when people type in" blank blank( service) near me". If.you decide to try them out. Definitely hit me up and i will set you up with the person that helped me. She will give you a discount and then also give me one if i give you the referral. 300 bucks a month for the rest of time is a lot of money but the ROI is totally worth it man. 30 thousand other businesses wouldnt be coming back every month if it wasnt right? 👍
One year later did you get any good advice? I’m trying to do the same for me and my dad. Work has been super slow and all we do is word of mouth or business cards. I know making a website and getting leads online is the way to do it but I don’t know where to start.
Wow I learned so much in this video I’m 17 I started my own business this past summer but before that I was working at a supermarket not saying bad I miss working part time but I started off by door knocking in community and I got clients and some referred me friends and family I turn 18 on Feb 14 and I wanna get into concrete business I have done it multiple time with my father and did couple projects on our land and it something I enjoy concrete pavers stucco and landscaping putting everything in gods hands and hope everything goes great
I’d love to be in your position as well, this is why I want to make websites for contractors, it’s a much better source for them since everyone just asks Google first
thanks So much!! Great info!! been in Bus over 30yrs and finding out when trying to be online it's all 100% true what your saying and appreciate your re affirmation of what we are being stricken right now.. also we experienced Yelp using AI robots and giving us wrong leads and all with the same job type across the country instead of in our area only..All fake but charged us a lot of money for each lead.
Hey Colin. Check out the Foundational Marketing System videos I did. As of now they are free to the public on my RUclips channel. There's one about websites. If you buy a website, make sure you're hiring someone that knows what they're doing not just with web design but with marketing for your particular kind of business. You can buy a crappy website just like you can build a crappy website. Do your due diligence!
Hire a professional marketing company to build your website. As a contractor focusing on your skillset (construction ) and not trying to do everything yourself will get you far. You make more money in your business, then you can delegate things out such as website building. Since you didn't spend the time on a website, you had more time making money with what you are best at.
@@lifemulder key here is “marketing company” marketers are supposed to get leads that convert into sales. That function should be measured closely no matter who is doing the job. There are many web designers who are not marketers. Hiring them to produce a website when you really need customers can be a frustrating experience for everyone involved.
Chuck's advice is spot on. While it's tempting to aim for the most visually stunning website, it's essential to prioritize marketing principles in its design. Studies show that most visitors first glance at the top left corner of a site (where the logo usually is) and then scan towards the top right. If there's no clear call to action there, such as a "call" or "request a quote" button, you could be losing potential customers. I noticed your comment is from 6 months ago. How did your website development go?
I use Google My Business as on line advertising. I get lot out of area calls. Arizona to Florida up to new York. Las Vegas, Illinois and wherever? I have had 2 job offers one around Boston @ 100,000 year, the second Florida offered 200,000 a year plus all moving expenses. I ignored both. Get calls from Angie, Home Advisor. What all do you do for the contractor (mentoring, tips, on line courses?) Lastly what is your fees. I do get word of mouth referrals, my truck is wrapped drive around better parts of town and park in high visibility locations. Wear company apparel just not busy enough.
@@chuckthecontractor after getting bids from moving companies to move approximately 180 miles was an eye opener low bid at least 3,500 to 5,000 up to 20,000. I have been giving to the DAV for all they do . Talked to the 2 city hall's. The second is my new home this year. No one likes it's here, very unfriendly, rude and snobs, add not too bright. That is what I hear from my friends or new to the community, everyone soon moves.
You're a life saver brother! Been on my own 2 years installing patios and i currently advertise with a mailing company but its 4k per season...keeps me busy 70 percent of the year but i would like to generate my own leads thanks so much brother
I’m a contractor and I’ve owned a remodeling business for the last eight years and the past three or four years we’ve done really really well and I’ve noticed it’s all word-of-mouth. I have a page on Google and I have a Facebook page, but I don’t have a website( I am currently building.) somehow we’ve stayed busy these last four years and it’s basically been all through word-of-mouth and just this month. It’s slow down right I don’t have anything lined up so I’ve been looking into advertisement not as easy as I have dozens of 5 star reviews on google and there are companies out there with like two reviews who are the top searches. How do you get higher up on the Google searches?
@HelmerEra-pp8zi I was a regular worker for many many years. It took a lot of clawing to raise myself up. With internet and technology, it's never been easier. Still takes a lot of work and commitment.
Hey Chuck, You are absouletly right, lead generation is just a huge rip-off, hiring one is more like giving aways the little profits. I own a steel detailing company here in the USA and have team in India too, with winter coming in what are the ways you suggest we can use to get new clients, We have worked on some decent size projects. Few of them are the Hanger for the B21, Bde Maka Ska Refrectory (MN), Extension for the MN airport and quite a few more. Thank you
How do home advisor works? How do they charge You? Let's say you call one of the leads they give you. Customer don't answer. Do You still pay for that lead or you only pay when you get the job?
It's pay per lead for Angi Leads. Angi Ads charges you monthly and gives you some leads. Either way, you are paying per lead. They do not care if you get the job or not.
They also clone real contractor's websites and append fake pages to them to bypass the contractor and get the customer's information. It's a good idea to google your own website and check the first 100 results to make sure your website has not been cloned.
why would a random website make such a difference? A craigslist ad doesn't show up on google like a website does? What company do you use for your website? I paused my google ads because I wasted hundreds of dollars and Google did not get me one paying customer.
Google shows the best search results. If you want Google to show you, you have to be the best search result. If you are in an area with weak competition, this is easy. If you're in a tough area like LA or Houston, it's very difficult because there are a lot of companies who have invested a lot of money in their websites and marketing. It's easy to spend money with Google and get nothing. If it was that easy, everyone would do it and it wouldn't work anymore. It's a competition my man.

Very insightful. ❤ Do you think construction companies are a good niche ? When it comes to running ads, organic marketing and implementing automations(like clients onboarding, automated financials etc etc) in their construction business .
Hey im 23 and wanna steam out and do egress windows and doors, off google maps I chose the one with the most reviews they quoted me $3700 for website and seo I make my own website as well but didn't turn out, this is my last whim and cutting into my house im trying to buy in a year am I making the right decision? They called Barrie web and I live in CAD Barrie Ontario and this is my last ditch effort, any thoughts ??
You can contact me through my website and I'm happy to talk to you. I can't give you specific advice through a comment. Look at video descriptions to find my info.
I recall reading somewhere that one (or both) of these companies hijack search engine results so that all searches are redirected through them rather than directly to your website.
New new contractor here ! How do I get leads if I have very limited budged but I do have all the basics. I have my insurance, my Subs, etc but I need clients. How do I get clients if I can't afford Google maps or my own page. Can I just use social media to promote, door to door and cold calls ?
Door to door, cold calls, networking, etc. Do all the things that don't cost money. If you can make any of these work for you, it will be very empowering for you as you will know that you can go out and hunt down work.
So i have a lady i hired to do my website and get me on google and do all that but now 8 months later i have yet to receive 1 call or get a job from it, so is she not doing a good job? She just keeps telling me it takes a while
Without a closer look i can't tell you why that's happening. I can say that I see this all the time because "marketers" really don't know what they're doing.
Great content Chuck! It's nice to see someone shedding light on how all this works. Do Lead gen companies like Home Advisor or Angi Leads give you any level of guarantee that you'll get some leads that will turn into customers? Or is it the case that they are guaranteed payment from you yet you might get nothing from it?
They don't make any guarantee that you will make sales. How could they? What if you are terrible at sales and can't sell a cup of water to a person dying of thirst? They wouldn't take that risk. That's why they charge per lead and not per sale. This also opens the door to sell you leads that could never turn into a sale even if you're the best salesperson on the planet.... It's a double-edged sword!
Working for cheap at expense of your body isn't very considerate. People either study to invest with time, or work hard and invest time AND health. The alternative is for you to buy the tools, get on the Internet and try your best to do it right the first time. For example, Ive been working with a strained ligament, takes time to heal when you have to continue to work
Ahh man that's rough. I hope you recover quickly. Taking care of your body goes a long ways with food, exerfcise, stretching, and sleep. Avoiding alchohol and drugs too... Even if you do all those things right, work can take its toll. Use your brain... Get smarter... Over time you can hire the young guys to do what you used to do and slowly teach them so the cycle can continue.
I will give you data of commercials buildings of your city like offices, clinic's, firm's. You can contact them for cleaning. It's a great way to get new clients.
Most of my leads are organic so I don’t pay per lead. I invested in my website and marketing many years ago and it still produces results. Had I paid for this service I would venture to guess my price per lead now is probably less than $10.
Look at how your website is performing. Is it fulfilling its purpose? If getting leads and customers is the goal, what are the numbers? How are you stacking up against your competition on Google?
Thanks for the advice. My issue is I'm just starting out, I don't have many photos and no high quality ones.(I do but they were all when I was sub-contracting and I think the company I worked for would sue me if i used them) do you have any advice for me?
You can ask them if you can use some of the pictures. You can use them and give them credit by saying you did this work while contracting with them. It shouldn't very a problem for long. Make sure you keep taking pictures.
you will get your clients bro. when i started and i still do this, i will drive around and put flyers up. some people and neighborhoods have spots for the newspaper dont put a flyer in a mailbox you will get in trouble. it cost less the 200 bucks for 500 flyers and i usually get 3 to 6 calls depending on time of year 3 in the winter 6 or more in the summer. hope this helps brother.
Thank you for the info! I’m currently going threw it right now.. phone hasn’t been ringing with jobs hardly at all for months.. trying to find ways to get more jobs
I manage a small lead generation agency focused on generating home improvement leads. Home Advisor and other aggregators share the leads they buy from companies like us, up to 4x lowering the quality and contact rate massively. The best converting leads are those generated through branded campaigns. Maximizing your ROI for the lowest cost possible is our objective.
You mean branded Google Ad campaigns? Makes sense since if someone is searching Google for the name of a company, they're primed to click an ad for that company. Hopefully these ads aren't needed because the company shows up organically for their own name!
That's a great one for Google since people with that kind of problem look for a fast solution. Our typical approach with a Website+Google Maps would be a good long-term profitable strategy and you can also do advertising on Google. If I knew more about your business, I might have some other ideas. Thanks for the question.

Wow I learned so much in this video I’m 17 I started my own business this past summer but before that I was working at a supermarket not saying bad I miss working part time but I started off by door knocking in community and I got clients and some referred me friends and family I turn 18 on Feb 14 and I wanna get into concrete business I have done it multiple time with my father and did couple projects on our land and it something I enjoy concrete pavers stucco and landscaping putting everything in gods hands and hope everything goes great
I’d love to be in your position as well, this is why I want to make websites for contractors, it’s a much better source for them since everyone just asks Google first
Hi I've been told this buy another contractor as well. I'm ready to take the plunge.

Thanks Matt!
thanks So much!!

Thanks Oliver!
Thanks for the info man GREAT CONTENT!!!
Buy a website or make one yourself? Pros and cons? I would love a comment and maybe even a video on website building. You do great work! 😊
What all do you do for the contractor (mentoring, tips, on line courses?)
Lastly what is your fees.
I do get word of mouth referrals, my truck is wrapped drive around better parts of town and park in high visibility locations.
Wear company apparel just not busy enough.
Good to hear from you Jeff. How did the move go?

You can do it! Diversify. Get on Google My Business... Website.. Etc.
Any idea what it costs you going this route per lead and eventual CAC?

Thank you from Texas! Very relatable, good info
You're welcome. I appreciate the comment!
Great content. Very informative. Thanks for posting!
Glad you enjoyed it!
when you buy these leads the lead company that is giving you these leads is dealing with about 50 plus other contractors
I have family who do drywall and roofing , I want to help them find contracts
I hated that I'm so good in what I do. But can't get no work 😡

I feel for this guy and understand his pain, I'm in the same boat. Business takes way more than knowing your trade and I'm learning that now.
@@chuckthecontractor yes but imagine being a complete worker
You can also do the business and have no idea of the work itself hands on
@HelmerEra-pp8zi I was a regular worker for many many years. It took a lot of clawing to raise myself up. With internet and technology, it's never been easier. Still takes a lot of work and commitment.
Hey Chuck,
You are absouletly right, lead generation is just a huge rip-off, hiring one is more like giving aways the little profits.
Thank you
Can you make a video on how to show first on Google from your perspective?
Search my channel I have tons of videos on this
Hey! I want to create a website for my dad so he can get more costumers but I don't know how to ?
Do what I did and teach yourself. I might have a course coming out soon on how to do a beginner setup to get things off the ground.
I can help you build it professionally and cheaply!
How do home advisor works? How do they charge You? Let's say you call one of the leads they give you. Customer don't answer. Do You still pay for that lead or you only pay when you get the job?
You pay when you get the lead. You're charged whether or not you land the job or even talk to a customer.
It's pay per lead for Angi Leads. Angi Ads charges you monthly and gives you some leads. Either way, you are paying per lead. They do not care if you get the job or not.
This is helpful info. Thanks a lot.
Glad it was helpful! What part resonated with you?
What kind of website host would you recommend using? I’m looking to try and build a website
Use A.i
I like godaddy for ease of use.
They also clone real contractor's websites and append fake pages to them to bypass the contractor and get the customer's information. It's a good idea to google your own website and check the first 100 results to make sure your website has not been cloned.
For real? Do you have any evidence?
Great video! Thank you for sharing
My husband and I have been in business for 10 years. Most of our jobs were word of mouth.
That's very common and good. That means if you used marketing to add more customers, you will get more referrals.
My friend I’m struggling with my plumbing business
why would a random website make such a difference?

What type of leads do you guys used
So i have a lady i hired to do my website and get me on google and do all that but now 8 months later i have yet to receive 1 call or get a job from it, so is she not doing a good job? She just keeps telling me it takes a while
Without a closer look i can't tell you why that's happening. I can say that I see this all the time because "marketers" really don't know what they're doing.
How you doing to create a system for sale ❓
We have had a system for sale for 2 years now. Look in the video descriptions for more info.
Great information, keep it up!
Thanks, will do!
Did he actually say how he gets his own leads or did he just say I get my own leads
Watch it again my friend. I spell it out for you.
Hey there. Do you have any advice on how to promote a cleaning business? Also what do you say about Thumbtack?
I will give you data of commercials buildings of your city like offices, clinic's, firm's. You can contact them for cleaning. It's a great way to get new clients.
If you don’t mind me asking, how much do you pay for each lead?
Most of my leads are organic so I don’t pay per lead. I invested in my website and marketing many years ago and it still produces results. Had I paid for this service I would venture to guess my price per lead now is probably less than $10.

If getting leads and customers is the goal, what are the numbers?
How are you stacking up against your competition on Google?
Totally Agree

I’m a lead generator now and I get all mine from knocking doors
I manage a small lead generation agency focused on generating home improvement leads. Home Advisor and other aggregators share the leads they buy from companies like us, up to 4x lowering the quality and contact rate massively. The best converting leads are those generated through branded campaigns. Maximizing your ROI for the lowest cost possible is our objective.
You mean branded Google Ad campaigns? Makes sense since if someone is searching Google for the name of a company, they're primed to click an ad for that company. Hopefully these ads aren't needed because the company shows up organically for their own name!
How would you recommend a nuisance trapping business to get leads?
That's a great one for Google since people with that kind of problem look for a fast solution. Our typical approach with a Website+Google Maps would be a good long-term profitable strategy and you can also do advertising on Google. If I knew more about your business, I might have some other ideas. Thanks for the question.
