This was of the first rock guitar songs that I learned on my own close to 35 years ago. Watching Barry play the outro solo (arranged for one guitar yet) still amazes me.
The guitar tone of Boston's Scholtz/Goudreau when first heard had the same effect as Eddie Van Halen's debut, absolutely iconic and unmatched or replicated. It lives on w/Barry,what a beautiful,powerful,melodic tone,no different from 1976,magical,rock on Barry,hope the magic stays in your fingers for a "Long Time".
So sad he and Tom Scholz couldn’t get past their differences enough to make more music together...there’s your second BOSTON guitarist right there! No question.
Imagine those two AND Pihl on the same stage together; Third Stage would've been amazing with a few harder rock solos, and having those three guitarists together live would've really done justice to the layerings on the first albums, and let Scholz still have another person who understood his tech.

But I also think the raw energy in the original Boston lineup was gone as soon as even a single member changed. The chemistry there was just perfect. Therefore, I wouldn’t mind if Boston had taken a different tack upon losing Hashian and Sheehan, and just gone with having three guitarists. When the original lineup changed and the chemistry changed, I think it would’ve been better for the band to grow immediately, because the ‘90s concerts (which had more guitarists, though not Goudreau) sounded better, at least to me, than the ‘80s ones, which were essentially five people.
We’ll, I guess you can call it a cover, but Barry was a big part of the original in Boston. One of the nicest guys around and playing on that original Boston album, wowww. What a legend.
Tom Scholz invented the preamps that make up 99% of the Boston guitar sound; known as the Rockman. Tom also wrote their debut album in his basement studio before there was even a band called Boston. Barry was just a hired gun to play it live. A good guitar player indeed but Boston would have been just fine with any other guitarist.

I saw Boston on the Third Stage tour. Then I saw RTZ in the early 90s who did a few classic Boston songs including Hitch A Ride. RTZ sounded more like classic Boston than Boston actually did at that time. While I still believe Tom is a genius, Barry deserves a lot more credit for Boston than he gets. No doubt he is an excellent guitar player. This from someone who believes that Boston’s debut is the best album ever recorded, bar none.
Barry is a great guy all around.. use to go to a small bar in Danvers "Tequillas" on the weekends and watch Barry and Brad jam with Brian and Muzz.. Barry would often have his beautiful woman with him..Brad would sit with me between sets and chat.. for me a very special time living in Boston. Brad was neutral and accepted Toms view of "Boston" being his creation and felt the rest of the band was simply "paid to play" his music.. Sad he felt that way but Tom is truly a musical genius but most genius types have very awkward ways about them. Brad invited me to meet him back stage and meet all the guys at the upcoming summer tour concert in Boston, l was really excited about it, a million concerts and never been back stage and met band members... Sadly Brad passed just prior to this tour they were practicing for, Boston is a top three all time fav, but meeting Brad and Barry....l was blessed with being an acquaintance of seriously humble greatness.
Well.. let's just say Barry did what he was instructed to do and did it very well. Tom Scholtz is The Mastermind behind the whole Boston Extravaganza. Including what and what not to do during all the guitar solos.

I think Tom may have played the original lead on the album, but if Barry didn't play it.. WOW, he sure does a DANG good job here! Plus Barry's a great guy, so that immediately elevates this lead far beyond Tom. :-)

Brad was a super nice guy.. would never say a bad word about anyone, but in a couple of conversations l had with him about Tom.. Brad had tons of respect for Toms brilliance but in not so many words let me know Tom is just a bit of a control freak. Tom is musically genius..its that simple, Barry is super talented and l regret not trying to spend more time talking with him, he was a very different personality than Brad, a lil stand-offish by comparrison.

On the record Barry only played on Foreplay/Long Time and Let Me Take You Home Tonight. On this song , Hitch a Ride, all the guitars AND bass AND organ was all Tom Scholz.

I love Barry as much as the rest of you guys but please keep in mind Tom single handedly wrote "all that music" himself before there ever was a Brad,Barry, Fran, or Sib to play any of it, and had never before touched a guitar 6 years before the release of that album, in the sad outcome of the original band and whatever happened between them without Tom Scholz chances are good there may never have been a Brad, Barry, Fran or Sib. I too am angry that whatever petty bullshit that went on ended one of the worlds greatest bands and actually caused the eventual demise of one of the greatest human beings/musicians on this planet, like him or hate him no one can take away the fact that the man is a genius, he went from being a tech at Polaroid and a "non musician" to writing one of the all time best selling albums in history 50+million copies at a time when disco dominated the music scene. He also was the inventor of the "Rockman /Power Soak" so for whatever kinda dick he may or may not be he's got a pretty impressive resume.
Aschule I have to agree with you overall but remember that Boston was a band afterwards. It wasn’t all Tom. Sholz couldn’t sing, Barry taught him guitar 🎸, Sib was an excellent drummer and Fran was a good bass player. And Brad Delp was an Incredible Singer! They all brought their talents to the table and made Boston successful. Tom wrote the music and songs true. Is he a Genius? yes! Unfortunately, he’s also a control freak. It wasn’t all Tom. Boston was a Band! At this point, I’d rather watch Barry play in a Club than Tom with his fake band. Just my preference. Barry sounds more like Boston to me at this point.
Haa.... the answer is NO... NEVER lol. I actually took pictures of his pedal board, and spoke to Barry after the show. Most of his sound is straight from the amp, and just a distortion pedal for a little boost... most of the distortion was turned down.
Thanks! Hypothetical: Barry uses a Rockman to get a better "Boston" sound on Boston tracks during his live shows. Tom sees videos on youtube and does one of two things. 1) Tom is flattered, calls Barry and congratulates him on his new band and his excellent cover of Boston songs and wishes him luck in all future endeavors. 2) Tom pitches a fit, calls his lawyer and demands Barry stop using retail Rockman equipment threatening a lawsuit if he doesn't comply... LOL!

Tom then hires a bunch of wanna be musicians and calls the band Boston, forging ahead to rip off the general public on repeated tours to pay his lawyer fees. At least Barry is a real man and names his band after himself. Oh wait, now Tom will sue me for these comments! Tom has more lawyers than fans that attend his shows.
My answer as well! I had the pleasure and honor to talk to Barry and Fran many years ago for some time, and neither had a bad word to say about Tom. Gentlemen to be sure. To be fair though, I did catch Boston this year and they were fabulous as is. I was at the Tribute Concert for Brad in Boston and when Barry and Fran joined Tom on stage as Boston and the place was nuts. I can't ever recall seeing a spectacle quite like that. I'm proud to say my wife, son, and I were there to see the first and last time Barry and Fran played on stage as Boston since 1979. Is Barry touring again anytime soon?
John-Del as you can see here, I just recently saw Barry in Derry, NH. Not sure what other shows he's doing but you could always google. His band now is called Barry Goudreau's engine room. They have a new CD out and it's typical classic Barry stuff, good old fashion rock. He was SO cool to hang out after the show and talk to every person that wanted to talk to him, take pictures, etc. he stayed in the lobby till everyone left the building. I spoke with him quite a bit and just a genuine great guy. Everyone in that band had the same reputation, well, then there's Tom...
You have to admit that Tom played the solo better, there are a few bits here and there. But Goudreau is an excellent guitarist, and Tom doesn't play a clean version of the solo anymore either.
Shea Tiller a lot you can do in a studio, including many takes LOL. Barry is just one of the nicest guys ever and because of that his solo elevates above Dbag Tom immediately 😁. How about the awesome feedback just before the lead? Nailed it!
@@VentBasics Yeah; don't get me wrong, Goudreau is definitely a much stronger live player these days. It's too bad we didn't get more albums with him and Scholz, because that combination of harmonized lead lines from Scholz and little bluesy bits which Goudreau played was really stunning.
Not really Shea. Saw Tom and of today when Tom played the solo on this. He was all over the frets to the point it changed the song. SUCKED! Barry did a MUCH better solo on Hitch a ride here...
@Epic Terry Barry taught Tom the guitar. Yes, it's true T.S. isn't a guitarist in the traditional sense, as he customized used 1968 Les Pauls that he found on the street to create the sound fx. Bear-in-mind that today, anyone can just use a computer and put sound fx and overlays without instruments.
Barry is truly an excellent guitarist. But he parted ways with Tom Scholz because he lined up on the wrong side of Tom’s legal dispute with the record company. Would have been nice to see it all work out, but it didn’t. Barry’s had like three or four shots at the big time since Boston and never cashed in. Boston has sold 75 million records and Barry has sold a tiny fraction of that on his own.

I love Barry as much as the rest of you guys but please keep in mind Tom single handedly wrote "all that music" himself before there ever was a Brad,Barry, Fran, or Sib to play any of it, and had never before touched a guitar 6 years before the release of that album, in the sad outcome of the original band and whatever happened between them without Tom Scholz chances are good there may never have been a Brad, Barry, Fran or Sib. I too am angry that whatever petty bullshit that went on ended one of the worlds greatest bands and actually caused the eventual demise of one of the greatest human beings/musicians on this planet, like him or hate him no one can take away the fact that the man is a genius, he went from being a tech at Polaroid and a "non musician" to writing one of the all time best selling albums in history 50+million copies at a time when disco dominated the music scene. He also was the inventor of the "Rockman /Power Soak" so for whatever kinda dick he may or may not be he's got a pretty impressive resume.
Aschule I have to agree with you overall but remember that Boston was a band afterwards. It wasn’t all Tom.
Sholz couldn’t sing, Barry taught him guitar 🎸, Sib was an excellent drummer and Fran was a good bass player. And Brad Delp was an Incredible Singer!
They all brought their talents to the table and made Boston successful. Tom wrote the music and songs true. Is he a Genius? yes! Unfortunately, he’s also a control freak. It wasn’t all Tom. Boston was a Band!
At this point, I’d rather watch Barry play in a Club than Tom with his fake band. Just my preference. Barry sounds more like Boston to me at this point.

Haa.... the answer is NO... NEVER lol. I actually took pictures of his pedal board, and spoke to Barry after the show. Most of his sound is straight from the amp, and just a distortion pedal for a little boost... most of the distortion was turned down.
Thanks! Hypothetical: Barry uses a Rockman to get a better "Boston" sound on Boston tracks during his live shows. Tom sees videos on youtube and does one of two things. 1) Tom is flattered, calls Barry and congratulates him on his new band and his excellent cover of Boston songs and wishes him luck in all future endeavors. 2) Tom pitches a fit, calls his lawyer and demands Barry stop using retail Rockman equipment threatening a lawsuit if he doesn't comply... LOL!
John-Del - oh the answer is definitely #2. Tom Sues, packs up his toys and goes home swearing to never share his toys again. Tom then hires a bunch of wanna be musicians and calls the band Boston, forging ahead to rip off the general public on repeated tours to pay his lawyer fees. At least Barry is a real man and names his band after himself. Oh wait, now Tom will sue me for these comments! Tom has more lawyers than fans that attend his shows.
My answer as well! I had the pleasure and honor to talk to Barry and Fran many years ago for some time, and neither had a bad word to say about Tom. Gentlemen to be sure. To be fair though, I did catch Boston this year and they were fabulous as is. I was at the Tribute Concert for Brad in Boston and when Barry and Fran joined Tom on stage as Boston and the place was nuts. I can't ever recall seeing a spectacle quite like that. I'm proud to say my wife, son, and I were there to see the first and last time Barry and Fran played on stage as Boston since 1979. Is Barry touring again anytime soon?
John-Del as you can see here, I just recently saw Barry in Derry, NH. Not sure what other shows he's doing but you could always google. His band now is called Barry Goudreau's engine room. They have a new CD out and it's typical classic Barry stuff, good old fashion rock. He was SO cool to hang out after the show and talk to every person that wanted to talk to him, take pictures, etc. he stayed in the lobby till everyone left the building. I spoke with him quite a bit and just a genuine great guy. Everyone in that band had the same reputation, well, then there's Tom...
You have to admit that Tom played the solo better, there are a few bits here and there. But Goudreau is an excellent guitarist, and Tom doesn't play a clean version of the solo anymore either.
Shea Tiller a lot you can do in a studio, including many takes LOL. Barry is just one of the nicest guys ever and because of that his solo elevates above Dbag Tom immediately 😁. How about the awesome feedback just before the lead? Nailed it!
@@VentBasics Yeah; don't get me wrong, Goudreau is definitely a much stronger live player these days. It's too bad we didn't get more albums with him and Scholz, because that combination of harmonized lead lines from Scholz and little bluesy bits which Goudreau played was really stunning.
Not really Shea. Saw Tom and of today when Tom played the solo on this. He was all over the frets to the point it changed the song. SUCKED! Barry did a MUCH better solo on Hitch a ride here...

@@Magnetron33 Yes, this is true. Tom didn't even pick up a guitar until he was at MIT. He was a keyboarder.
@Epic Terry Barry taught Tom the guitar. Yes, it's true T.S. isn't a guitarist in the traditional sense, as he customized used 1968 Les Pauls that he found on the street to create the sound fx. Bear-in-mind that today, anyone can just use a computer and put sound fx and overlays without instruments.
Barry is truly an excellent guitarist. But he parted ways with Tom Scholz because he lined up on the wrong side of Tom’s legal dispute with the record company. Would have been nice to see it all work out, but it didn’t. Barry’s had like three or four shots at the big time since Boston and never cashed in. Boston has sold 75 million records and Barry has sold a tiny fraction of that on his own.
