Tom Schulz may have been the mastermind, but he had to have a band to take this music on the road, and what a band! Boudreaux, Delp, Sheehan and Hashain made it a reality. Best debut album in rock history!
Certainly right up there with the best. The 60s and 70s was an especially great time for rock music as the bands and creativity exploded everywhere, largely inspired by none other than those 4 lads from Liverpool.
Good Point! They had a band chemistry! It wasn’t just one guy although he did write most of the songs. But Brad Delp’s vocals were amazing and the rest of the band was good too!

I was at this show. This is where I discovered these guys. I am forever a loyal fan since they always play in northern new england. I see them whenever i can. Amazing group of people. Wicked kind bunch.
Barry is the one who "showed/taught" Tom Scholz how to play. How do I know that? I was a bass player in the Boston/New England scene with band members who were friends with Barry and Fran Sheehan. In fact, when they came off their first major tour, Barry and Fran dropped by to catch a few of our sets at an eastern MA club. Our manager, who was also a Boston area radio station DJ, had access to the first promotional Boston album and our group got to hear it at one of our meetings with him before it was released publicly...cool days, great memories.
@@mojodojo5533 Not that I know of. If they did, it was on a very limited basis. The band was basically put together in Tom's basement and local rehearsal halls. The drummer in our group that we formed at that same time had auditioned for Scholz shortly before joining our group but Scholz wasn't satisfied with his meter (great chops but he tended to speed up in certain parts of songs) so he didn't get the gig...can you imagine? Enter Sib Hashian (R.I.P.). Scholz was a control freak (understandbly) and even insisted that he control the recording and production of that first album, refusing to let the label producers control it. I think most would agree that it was the best Boston album of all.

@@kevinmamie7543 I think this is part of "genius problems." They tend to be rigid and also experience a lot of responsibility for others which actually makes them seem irritable and "jerky." Underneath, I think it is caring which sometimes comes off poorly. Tom's certainly given away a lot of money and started a company (SR&D) that employed people with livable wages mostly as an interest hobby/giving back to the community until it was no longer viable.
First time I've seen Barry play an SG that wasn't a custom with 3 pickups, he always a great voice also, too bad internal problems with Tom and the rest of the band minus Brad kept the original lineup from remaining a band, to me as with any great band all the original members were equally important, it wasn't just Brad and Barry as a commenter below said, like him or not, Tom Scholz is a genius and was fairly new to playing guitar before this album was written played and recorded by him alone before the actual band was formed and recorded on the album. Tom has made major accomplishments in his lifetime including writing an album that came to sell 50+million copies and became one of the best selling rock albums in rock history so as much as some fans may like other members of the band had it not been written by Tom they would not have become a band at all 🤔 RIP Sib and Brad Delp

Barry nailed one of the most iconic solos in rock history. From the greatest debut album ever. Tom might be the Mastermind but Brad Barry Sib and Fran will always be BOSTON.
Aside from the great performance, and the musicality of these guys, there is something to be said of "The Look" of a rock band. We have here Barry Goudreau up in his years (upper 6O's?) His band I guess, and he looks good and trim like every member of the Stones or Aerosmith. Hair is there and worn rockish. But...The lead singer (Brian Maes) should try and work something out with that keyboard because he cannot be very engaging with it like it is. Turn it sideways or someone else play. I like this lineup. Just like seeing a lead singer that is out front 60% of the show. It completes the look. Everything else looks good even though these are small stages.
I know how the Boston Purists (1st 2 albums only guys) say that nobody can measure-up to Brad, but that guy on vocals does a great job! So does Tommy DeCarlo.

Brian was a friend of Brad's.He does a kick-ass job, and he considers it a tribute to his friend's memory. Decarlo is a wannabe, and he sucks. Brad was a good friend of mine, and you won't catch me at a "Boston" show, but I can't wait to see this show in Sept. Barry is awesome!
I think Barry is probably the better player of the 2. If you listened to the 3rd album, you will notice the solos are good, but not quite as good as they were on the first 2 albums. Well Goudreau isn't on the 3rd allbum. Self explanitory.
Its so nice that finally barry is in the spotlight.. He has put that touch and technical acrobatics on display.. Sure tom is a genius but for the guy who played it show after show is the trial by fire.. You aced the audition...

Agreed Big B... Barry goes from that high E to the low E string in the second monster solo. For my ear I've never really seen or heard Tom do those licks. I mean you watch and listen to Barry's live solo of the same song in the Giants Stadium concert. He just seems to own this song. I don't see how Tom could teach him those licks. He just seems to know them like the back of his hand.

How on earth did Barry and these guys get the right's to play that Boston tune live. Also Barry's play on this live is spot on (studio quality). But it also makes me appreciate even more how Tom Scholz was able to composed and play these guitar licks himself on the first album, as well all the other parts (minus vocals and drums). I still find it hard to fathom.

How on earth did Barry and these guys get the right's to play that Boston tune live. Also Barry's play on this live is spot on (studio quality). But it also makes me appreciate even more how Tom Scholz was able to composed and play these guitar licks himself on the first album, as well all the other parts (minus vocals and drums). I still find it hard to fathom.
Barry played all electric rhythm guitars on Foreplay and Long Time, and Barry also plays the lead guitar solo on Long Time on the debut Boston record.

Barry joined me to play the awesome lead guitar on "Long Time," and Fran to play the bass track for "Foreplay." In L.A., Brad's "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" was recorded in its entirety, and its the only song to embody performances of all five musicians that eventually ended up on stage for the first ever "Boston" concert in 1976.
