John Beaudin has been in major market radio (Edmonton, Vancouver & Calgary) for 38 years and a music journalist since 1989. He graduated from Broadcasting school as a newsman so he would have the skills to write about the artists that inspired him since he bought his first Elton John album as a teen. In the '80s Beaudin was the host of the syndicated radio show ‚”The Cross Canada Report‚” which had two versions (Rock and A/C). Beaudin was also asked to be a judge at the Juno Awards (Canada's answer to the Grammys) Twice. He has anchored every position in radio including morning and afternoon drive and was a Program and Music Director for The Breeze and California 103 in Calgary. He currently hosts the evening show at Move 103.5 (formerly QM-FM) in Vancouver and on iHeartRadio.

Wow, what an interview! Thank you. Barry's contributions to Boston with all those harmony guitar solos and vocal high harmonies to Brad, are my favs of the Boston sound. He's a legend. FYI, that dual guitar solo with Barry and Tom on Hitch a Ride, is my all time fav guitar solo.
That dual guitar solo with Barry and Tom on Hitch a Ride? just so you know that was all Tom, Barry has even went on the record to say he did not play at all on that song.
Tom was the guy who liked and played the harmony solos. He's the brain behind the style and sound of Boston. If you listen to Barry's solo album, Orion The Hunter or RTZ you won't find too much of those harmony solos and clever arrangements. Barry even dropped the iconic Boston guitar sound after his first solo album because that was Tom's sound and not his. Barry started out as the lead guitarist for Boston but soon turned out to be nothing more than a hired gun. Tom was learning fast and his guitar playing became the most important ingredient of the Boston sound.
It's all true. He may be a tyrant, but if you're a Boston fan, ya gotta Scholze his due; 'cause he was mostly the architect of their sound. It is worth noting, however, that early on (pre Boston) Scholz learned a lot about playing lead guitar from Barry. Tom did absorb and copy elements of Barry's style, but then used it in a much grander, more expansive way.
what Barry should be doing is sending tom a thank you note every day for the rest of his life or i guess he could just cry about the guy who made him anything
It is touching to see the videos with footage of Barry going over to the other band members and playing next to them and smiling, enjoying the experience together. There is something about that band that reeked of happiness. It was contagious in their songs and performances.
The solo at the start of Longtime is IMO the greatest solo ever. BG rocks!
I agree about the Long Time Solo - we got to meet Barry G here when he played here with American Vinyl - Super nice guy - I told him about the girl that I took to the Boston Concert in San Diego Ca - in the late 70's WOW

I love Boston, Tom is unbeliveable and I think his Les Paul should be in the R&R Hall of fame. but I think Barry's SG should be right niext to it. IT IS don't look back

Great interview. Saw the '78 tour. Madison Square Garden, Philly Spectrum, and Jadwin Gym on the Princeton University campus. Sammy Hagar opened up all three. Thanks for the memories✌️❤️🎶🎵
I really liked those first two Boston albums growing up. I still love them today and I have multiple LPs, different pressings or different remasters, of those albums today.
Brad Delp was an amazing singer. It was really sad to hear that he had passed from suicide 16 years ago.
Barry seems like a really nice guy. I would have loved to have been at one of those Led Zeppelin Boston Tea Party shows like he mentioned. I've got recordings of two or three of those nights they played. Heck, I even have a poster from the concert, or at least one of the nights, hanging in my music room
I really would like to ask Barry some questions about the 1979 Giants Stadium show they played where a professionally shot video exists from it. Throughout the video it switches between black and white and color. I always wondered why it was done that way and I wonder if he had any knowledge of the video or why it was filmed like that? I wish they would have officially release that one in the best quality possible 👍

Yes I agree its a wow interview and to hear a lot of information directly from the person instead of here say and stories told and retold by third person and such, because these days nothing is what it seems and one cannot believe everything one sees, computer age and technology. Brad is my inspiration and to hear from someone very close to him is like hearing from Brad going back to those time. Barry Goudreau thank you so much and you look so young after all these years and I dont see any lines at all and must be all the love and music and family.. Brad lives on and so are you with your music and humble personality just like the person I adore forever. Peace be with you and your family.

RTZ is phenomenal. I love Scholz just as much as anybody else, RTZ has some fantastic songs.

The only Boston I will only ever know and recognize are Brad, Barry, Fran, Tom, and Sib. The first three albums are magic and masterful perfection and the only Boston music I will acknowledge when defining the group Boston.

You mean Jim Masdea not Sib, right. Cause he wrote all the drum parts for a majority of those songs on the first 3 albums.
@@shuttrbug Jim's there at the first album but record co. did not like him he could not be in the band but at that point there was no band and if you look at the back of the first album it does say Sib is not the drummer on rock and roll band but in the end it turns out that it was Tom and Brad with some of it Jim drums some of it Sibs as Tom mixed in his basement the rest of the band hired guns to play live and fyi none of them knew any of this even Brad did not know for over 10 years
all you have to is hear anything Tom does and it sounds like Boston first time song Walk on come on radio wow Boston has a new hit
Brad Delp was the face of Boston! I saw them on their first tour and they blew everyone away! Once Brad was out of the band I was out on Boston! Bought Corporate America album and ended up trading it in at a used record shop! Not good !
Thank you John for a great interview!! Barry is an amazing talent. As young fans back in the day, I’m sure many of us assumed that Scholz played all the leads and Barry did the rhythms. Not the case at all. And verified when Barry mentions he did the leads on Foreplay/Longtime. Gosh- what a thrill it would be to see him playing with “Skunk” Baxter !
Yes Barry "played" the parts for live shows but Scholz was the guy that wrote and played those solo's on Foreplay/ Long time on the record!
It is his melodies he wrote. Barry used what was on Scholz's original studio tape and learned it note for note to play live.
Tom insisted Barry play what he wrote. This is a Fact!
Boston had a magical sound!
The combat zone brings back a lot of memories. It disappeared in the mid 80's but some wild times there. Tremont street I believe it was.

I just subscribed to watch the interviews I Really Liked this 1 with Barry Goudreau He is So Cool in 92 I drove 2,5 hours to go see RTZ I Loved the first cd the show was So Good and Barry's Guitar was Great and Brad Delp RIP I had gone by myself Hard Rock Club in Dallas. Tx aft go er the show met a couple of Girls and set at my table the Bass Play Barry mentions on here Really Nice Guy sat at our table and ask if we wanted to g o on tour bus meet the Band first met Barry So Nice we went ro den area and were drinking beer and Brad Delp came an ser accross from me He was So Nice and Humble listen to me just talking away didnt have camara but that was a Bucket list item Garry to have been done the way he had by Tom and He just had no bitterness I watched the Lou Gram interview and no doght he was one of the Greatess Rock Singers he just has Such Bitterness and I know he feels cheated but he could no way be as Good as he once was and Kelly current Singer is doing a Great job and Lou had to slamm him be Like Sreve Perry he handed off to Arnell

Boston is one of my all-time favorite bands. It was the first concert I ever saw. Sammy Hagar opened up for them, and he was great too. It is a shame that Tom is such a stubborn and selfish ass. My family is from the same town where Brad grew up in MA. Brad was such a humble and kind soul. The fact that politics has kept them out of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a disgrace. It wouldn't be Boston without Barry, of course. He is also a very awesome and humble musician in his own right.

Scholz was a real jerk to him...Scholz told people to work on projects after he was fighting with Epic records after "Dont Look Back". So Goodreau got Delp and they cut an album w the Rockman amp (the Boston guitar sound..). Scholz felt it was too Boston sounding so he fired Goodreau...a control freak jerk.
Barry’s new label put up a giant billboard claiming that Barry was “The Sound of Boston”. That’s what got him fired, as Barry admitted, to his credit. Tom had to literally invent electronics to get the Boston sound. I would be pissed too.

I did not know that Brad was Barry's brother-in-law. Brad's passing must have been so difficult for the family as a whole.

That album showed the world that Barry was the guitar sound of Boston, not all gimmicks of Tom Sholz
I would be interested in knowing if Barry has Atlantic Canadian roots as there was a lot of Acadians from Atlantic Canada that had moved to the greater Boston area to work in the building trades. So maybe his parents or family moved there and he was a offspring.
Barry Mentions that when they were in LA they recorded 3 songs. Let Me take you Home made the album. Anyone have any idea what the other two tracks were?

Pretty much complete nonsense
Both these guys politely skip over the reason for Delp's suicide----he put a camera in his finacee's sister's bathroom and got found out. The sister told him they'd give him the chance to tell the fiance, and he decided to kill himself rather than face her.
Yeah I head about that as well.

There's another side
Boston is Tom Scholz there was no band there hired guns still bitter almost fifty years later!
You never know my sister and then her 24 year old committed suicide
His wife comes out of the closet during this interview!

There is not enough I could say about Sholz! He was a special genius! He was a superior player and engineer, and even created effects boxes to recreate his sound!
Well yes, however, without Brad Delp there wouldn’t really be a boston to talk about, he is the voice of Boston, he also co wrote smokin and was the sole writer for Let me take you home tonight.
Tom Sholz thinks that he is so much better and smarter than everyone else. He is delusional. You swap out Fran, Sib, Brad and Barry and you will NOT have BOSTON. You may get lucky and have a decent sound but it will NEVER be Boston
You know that Tom started Boston....Right?? He IS smarter & has the final word with the band....
Thank you so much for this interview, I was waiting for you to ask him about Mother's Milk. Barry is such a great guy to listen to and so talented. Always felt he got a raw deal but him and Brad were the best.
