I lived next door to the house where Barry lives now and has lived since the early days of Boston. I lived next door to Marianne (she's real), from the More Than a Feeling lyric, in another town - this was on the same street where Brad Delp grew up. I have pics in my house of Barry and I and Brad and I from a meet and greet at a special event from 2003 in Lebanon, NH (a rare joint appearance which included Sib and Fran, no Tom - remember Barry?). I got an autograph from Tom when he and Brad did a record signing for Corp America. So, on my Boston CD, I have signings from all 5 - feel very lucky. Have met Brad many times when fronting Beetlejuice in clubs, always approachable, friendly and chatty. Very nice people. Also, Boston who supported BOC Oct 16, 1976 was my first concert ever as a 15 year old. Lots of history with Boston.

I just discovered Orion The Hunter yesterday. Didn't know they existed because they never got airplay in the midwest evidently and I never saw the video on MTV. I've jammed 'So You Ran' I don't know how many times already. And what comes up on the youtube feed? Your interview with Barry Goudreau! There's a force in the universe and some of us are connected to it. Excellent interview as always BTW.

For any Barry Goudreau fan - or anyone interested in more from Barry, there are other records not discussed here: RTZ had only the one well-known studio record, but a 2nd record was released called "Lost" and later released as "Lost in America". A 3rd record was released called "Lost & Found". All have Brad Delp on them, so for fans of Brad these are kind of a must! Also, Barry did two albums with Lisa Guyer who has a great voice: "Gypsy Girl" and "Leap of Faith" are both good albums. A gem of a record was done with Brad Delp called "Delp & Goudreau". This one is a treat for fans. And there is another band called Ernie and the Automatics, with Sib Hashian - and Brian Meas & Tim Archibald from RTZ, and they released an album called "Low Expectations" which is a fun album. I believe Barry not only played most of the guitars on every one of these albums, but he wrote or co-wrote most of the songs too.

    Hey Pete,
Great interview. This reminds me of a potential topic for the Hudson Valley Squares or you and Martin or what have you - members of bands that were secret weapons or played a larger part of a band's success or sound than were given credit, perhaps either by the band leaders or fans. A member quits or is fired and the band's sound changes much more dramatically than anyone would have thought.
I'm not saying that because of Barry - I realize that Boston was Tom Scholtz's brainchild and that Tom did play most of the guitars on the records. Interestingly, I went to Barry's website and he met Tom by hiring him as a keyboardist for his college band. It's pretty clear than Tom probably learned some guitar tricks from Barry.

What Barry never mentions is how he tried to replicate the Boston sound using Tom Scholz's invented gear, get Brad Delp to sing, have Sib Hashian on drums and have someone named Fran as bassist. It was meant to LOOK and SOUND like Boston as the record company hated how long it took for Tom to bring product to market. There is no end of people trying to take credit for Boston. But it was Tom who labored by himself for thousands of hours writing songs, inventing gear, recording bass, guitar, and keyboards himself, and engineering the tracks.

It is generally known that musicians are very ignorant of anything but music because they are only interested in music, but I am surprised that at least someone did not question the whole narrative that this is the biggest scam of the century when this fake pandemic is in question where the flu has disappeared and how is it possible that the mortality rate is 0.1 percent and still is presented as something fucking deadlly so much, it doesn't matter if someone is educated or not. Otherwise I have great respect for the man.
