No it’s probably because when you sign a contract, the studio/company usually requires you to do multiple projects for them. Like Tom Huddleston‘s Disney contract forced him to be in the awful Kong movie that’s nothing like roles he would normally choose. I think to get his standup special, Netflix required him to do other projects for them to & so this movie was just about fulfilling that contract

I will never get over how terrifying and gross the animation style is. I’m a sucker for animation and I accept pretty much any art style, remembering that people tried so hard to make it. But jeez, who approved this?? It’s so ugly looking, the lighting in particular

I saw this movie two times in a row when it first came out a bit ago. I babysit two boys, one is 5 and the other is 7, and they lost their fucking minds over this movie, especially the youngest. They laughed when the dog shit, they hated zeus with so much passion, and they cried when they thought Marmaduke was dead. The second the movie ended they had me restart it and we watched it again. It was torture. I've been trying to forget this movie ever since, and I thought I was going to make it to the grave without ever seeing this nightmare ever again, but no. Here I am. Thank you Danny

Even as a kid, I remember just hating movies where the whole joke was "horrible untrained dog causes endless misery." It's so irritating and they always play it like the dad or parents are the bad guys for getting fed up with being injured and having their property destroyed, instead of a single person training the dog.
Beating up a dog in a children's movie is an incredibly stupid idea. Just cue kids beating up their dogs to train them like the movie they just watched.

if you're not willing to put up with the "misery" of having to train a dog then don't get one. dogs aren't human and stressing them out and treating them like crap because you've failed to set them up with good behavior YOU want out of them IS your fault and does make you the bad guy. don't get one if you don't wanna have the responsibility.

I feel like this animation is not bad. Like at all. The animation is not the problem, the script, writers, directors and whatever they were smoking in the conference room together was. Given a good script, the animation would not have been looked at that much and the movie could have worked as a good movie with meh animation. But that's only what I think.
Also, someone could argue that if the animation was excellent, almost perfect in every ways, the film could have been interesting to watch if not to engage in...

Personally, I think that the trainer is speaking to Marmaduke through his own language, not the other way around. We are talking about a guy who is renown worldwide for his ability to train and discipline dogs. I think he’d have picked up a few tricks to understand and communicate with them along the way.

10:15 You're not half wrong. Marmaduke from symptoms I've seen was experiencing GDV (Gastric Dilatation Volvulus) which is condition that is life threatning for dogs if not treated in time. It usually happens to big or deep chested breeds like the great danes. I did a homework project on it and the fact that is potrayed as a joke hurts my feelings.
I know it as “bloat”. My newfoundland eats out of a slow feeder and cannot run or play for an hour after eating to avoid it

My teacher made us either watch this or help my math teacher (she was the best math teacher ever) glue a bunch of paper together for something she was making. More than half the class was helping out and our teacher let us sing to music until the movie was done because we finished early. That was one of my favorite school days ever.

I think the whole point is they know that these movies won’t succeed anyway, so they throw everything out the window and bank on the movie getting traction - especially on social media - for how bad it is. Also, the fact this came out after Netflix fired/cut funding from its animation departments DID NOT help this movie’s case.

One of the biggest issues has been the shift from actual voice actors to any famous person the production can get their hands on
I don't tend to really care if celebrities get chosen for voice roles if they at least do good jobs, jack black is always a treat in every animated appearance he's in and i think all the voice acting in the sing movies is geniunly really good.
I do have issues with celebrity voice acting like this though were it's clear they just chosem some one famous and not some one who fits the character.

every time I saw the animation of this video play I felt distress. The character designs deserve to be put into a horror movie and the way everyone and everything moved was just unsettling to watch
The dog is like "please can i go in, i won't hurt a fly" while literally making the family's life miserable.
As an artist who mostly focuses on character design, I commend the animators for their sheer commitment to making every single character look as grotesquely unpleasant as possible. I'm not even being sarcastic: genuinely impressed. Didn't think I'd find a less appealing animating style than the Adam's Family movie from a few years back, but damn...Marmaduke's mouth movements when he talks made me want to close out of this video entirely

I've seen my dogs trained by a few different trainers and they were all incredibly terrible people. They would sometimes take on multiple dogs at once and just throw them in a kennel in their garage. They would put chain collars on the dogs that woud choke them if they misbehaved. Both my dogs had vastly different personalities and their responses were as follows:
The regal spoiled brat would obey, but he would tear up and not look at myself or my parents.
The sweet heart who loved food cried loudly.
It absolutely broke my heart to watch some of the training and also knowing where they were being kept when we weren't there. They were utterly terrified the entire time. They would often piss themselves and get punished harshly for it. Even my parents had a difficult time convincing themselves that this was for the benefit of our dogs. Eventually however, they realized that the only thing they were doing for our dogs was traumatizing the shit out of them. When the decision was made to bring them home and never trust any trainer ever again, the damage was quite evident. They were prone to aggressive fights with each other, even growling violently at us, and had crying episodes as well as a ton of seperation anxiety. If any of us left the house at all, they would walk to the door and cry loudly.
Never trust trainers. Ever.

The thing that's going under everybody's radar is that this movie is an animated version of the 70 year old Marmaduke cartoon strip AND there was also a live action version in 2010, which is also terrible

I feel like they realized how much popularity Riverdale got for being terrible that they decided that that was the way to go instead of just... making enjoyable shows people want to see. Like they've just been putting out the worst garbage that you honestly need to see to believe so they've still got a subscriber base, but it's just such a shame that they've valuing clout for being terrible over making actual media art that people would want to see and enjoy.
Riverdale gets such a bad rap. The first season and a half are actually bad but the rest is actually good… idk what they were doing with moth man tho. That kinda… they gave up now…

at least riverdale is bad in a campy, semi self-aware way. they’ve embraced how bad it is and are just having fun with it at this point. not a single person involved in the creation of marmaduke at any point didn’t want to die.

I grew up in a really rural area and we didn't have high speed internet until I was about 13. What I always looked forward to other than watching cable TV was on Sunday, which was when the in color funny papers came. I remember reading Marmaduke and other comic strips and it's what inspired me to be an artist. Brad Anderson died in 2015 and I think even if he was alive and completely senile he would still hate this movie.

The writers there just ripped off the scene from Drive where Ryan Gosling says "It's driving time" and then drives all over the bad guys honestly.

Best part of this movie was by far when Walter White came in and said "Marmaduke we have to cook" and then they had the crystal meth arc. Lots of character growth for Marmaduke there and it really solidified this movie as an instant classic in my eyes.

Calling the wave that was made by Marmaduke falling into a pool a "mini tsunami" is a massive understatement.
Seeing Netflix closing down their animation department, and then seeing them put out stuff like Marmaduke, a Big Mouth spinoff, and a second Boss Baby TV show just comes to show how incompetent and apathetic they seem to be around animation nowadays. I understand they do have the occasional hidden gems here and there (The House, The Cuphead Show!, and The Sea Beast lead this year's animation catalogue), but aside from that, nothing doesn't seem right at all
At least Big Mouth and the first Boss Baby movie were pretty good. Netflix just milks a decent idea until it’s dead.

Being a voice actor has always sounded really cool to me, but they don’t usually start on animation till after the voice work is over so I would just be terrified that it might turn out as disturbing as this.
Thats how horrible shows or movies are made. Its so dumb to record a voice over and then work on an animation 😂 like you need to get the feelings down and the tone down right by looking at the animation and try to mirror the lip sync
@@jennaisela Yeah I don’t know why the voice is always done beforehand when I watch Disney behind the scenes stuff. Maybe cause they think it’s easier to get the timing right by going back and moving things in the animation to match the audio, rather than having to speak perfectly in real time down to every syllable.
@@jennaisela it’s easier to time the lip syncing when you already have the voices. They usually show the storyboard and have directors while the voices are being done. Also they’ll probably do multiple takes with some different vibes to them to make sure they get the proper mood and feeling to the scene. Have you seen anime dubs in the US? that’s animation before voices.
@@_____________a_a Any dub is voice after the animation, but the original production is almost always voice first. I don't know much of anything about the process, but I would assume it's because animation is such a long and tedious process that it's a lot easier to get voices done first, so that the animators can have voice cues to sync with. And, if the VAs had to sync to finished animation, it could be difficult to keep up with the pace. Like, with no human voices to guide them, the animators are likely to make costly mistakes and make the lip movements look stiff and nonsensical. Therefore, the voice actors could have to speak really fast or really slow which could look unnatural, or, speak at a good pace, but risk the mouth movements looking off. It could make it look uncanny and unnatural either way.
I'd say it makes both VAs and animators jobs easier to do it voice before animation/visuals.

i legitimately, unironically believe this may be the single least creative movie on netflix. with the plot of winning a dog show (alongside basically every plot beat being done to death already), guy's lame-ass 'insult', the fake moral of 'believe in yourself', marmaduke's god-awful talent, zeus being disqualified in the most predictable way imaginable, and the shoddy excuse of a last-minute disney death, i don't think even a single aspect of this movie can be described as original in any way, shape, or form, and idk why but that frustrates me way more than any movie has before or since
Netflix has people in their basement, they work for their freedom by making crappy movies, the promise of being set free is the only think which makes them even slightly motivated to make these horrible things.

I'm surprised that people aren't talking about how this was actually a live action movie before it was a cartoon. It wasn't the most popular, but it was around. It was like a less emotional comedy oriented version of marley and me. And yes, for some reason he talks there too. Kind of like a thing for the audience to keep up.

As someone who actually shows dogs it’s so funny to me how movies always make dog shows seem so wild and pretentious 💀 Like.. real dog shows are just a bunch of people who love their dogs trotting them around in a circle for a minute and then giving them cookies for doing a good job. Sometimes you get a ribbon for having a cool dog. Sometimes dogs make little mistakes and everyone laughs it off bc dogs are just like that. It’s a fun time, definitely recommend.

The goal of dog shows is to promote and celebrate healthy dogs that are well suited for whatever role they are meant to excel at, whether that be companionship, herding, protection, or any of the many other things that dogs have helped us with through the years. They are incredibly educational and help a lot of people figure out what kind of dog they would best be suited for, encouraging responsible and informed dog ownership. Educated, prepared dog owners are the key to making sure that less dogs are being thrown into shelters by people who didn’t know what they were getting into.
The fact that this is on Netflix feels SO disrespectful. As an animation fan, I hear about animated shows, GOOD animation shows, may I add, get cancelled all the time. What the fuck is that character design? That robotic ass animation? Even the underwhelming voice acting, HOW IS THAT ON NETFLIX??? Is the bar in hell as long as there's a single celebrity?

It has nothing to do with it having a celebrity in it - there's tons of horrible animation on Netflix, and all streaming services now. I also think there's a major difference between animation standards for tv shows and movies for some reason.

Short Answer: Yes, they are looking for a profit so they create these cheap movies intentionally.
They have been reinforcing the idea of quantity over quality because most will still watch these awful movies and see them as a variety of things to watch while browsing through their platform. Over the recent years, people have noticed and it looks like they're trying to bring in some award-winning shows and movies meanwhile as they try to stay ahead of their other streaming competitors.

I feel like the quality has gone way down recently. It started off not great, then hit a high point a few years ago... now it's utter garbage. We don't keep a Netflix subscription for more than a month at a time. I'll activate it and pay for a month only when there's something specific (rarely a netflix original) we want to watch. Then I'll cancel as soon as we're done. But we haven't even done that since sometime last year.
