The Yamaha TW 200 Crisis of 2018

- Jesse and I got our TW 200s stuck at the bottom of a steep sandy hillside, where their batteries died and multiple parts broke. After abandoning them and walking 3 miles to civilization, we had to return for four days with parts and renewed spirits to ride them out. Shoutout to our supporters who roasted us for getting stuck in the first place.
I got 20 miles out in the middle of nowhere on my Tdub and broke a chain. I put it back together with some fence wire but didn't get far. About the time I started walking, with no water at all, the Secretary of Agriculture was driving along, the only vehicle I had seen in hours, it was a friggin miracle, and picked me up, bike and all and took me all the way home. Now that's a public servant.
My public servant lift story ain't so nice. Conversation excerpt: "DID you vote twice?"
Solid
As an avid offroader, I've long learned that unknown downhills can become a straight descent to hell when you need to turn around. Glad you made it out all right!
Not sure why but this might be my favorite video ever. This is what RUclips is for.
Great comment and I agree.
You put street tires on a TW200? No, no, NO!!!! Knobbies! And air them down!
I broke my collarbone falling off my Triumph Tiger 800 XcX and had to leave a $15,000 bike in the desert while I rode the ambulance. That was not a good feeling. Fortunately the firefighters were all battling over who would get to go get it the next day and ride it out. The winner delivered it to my house.
Great adventure! Though where I live that river would be considered a creek.
My recommendation is less tire pressure for more grip
What an ordeal! Crazy!
You young kids having fun/ adventure together. Wise enough to get the right bikes to begin motorcycle life.
One person on each side of the bike. Person on the right keeps the throttle cracked just a little. Person on the left works the clutch and you walk the bike up.
Ya, I was surprised they couldn't just put-put walk them up one at a time in 1st gear.
Through thick and thin together, awesome! Stick together like this and you will be able to overcome the many challenges that life will throw your way......
Not sure if anyone has suggested this (not going to read all of the comments) but if you let most of the air out of your rear tire it will climb those hills much better. I find about 2-3 psi best. I carry a small pump to aid air back later.
this is the problem with an off road bike with no kicker. and one of the main reasons i haven't gotten a tw200. i've been looking for an older one that still had a kicker. yamaha, what were you thinking?
problem not the kicker - it can be push started right ?- loss of light on first day was - did right thing coming back to the collect in the daylight - well done - could have switched out lever to get up the hill then put the leverless bike in 1st/2nd raise back wheel with rocks under skid or have stronger rider lift the back while the other starts it - once running give it a couple of revs drop the back wheel and just cruise out of there slow and steady on one gear that is provided that there is no safety on the starter motor of course - just ideas you got out all right eventually so thats good.
@@simoncossettini9680 that's why i always carry a spare lever, and a pair of vice grips. i've lost track of how many i've broken over the years. and it's never when your close to home.
A kicker might not do much good on fuel injected bike. Got to run that fuel pump to get gas and that won't happen if your battery is dead. You can only hope you have enough residual fuel left in the throttle body but many times that is not the case... I should know it happened on my R1 and I was screwed till I got the battery charged up. That being said, errbody hate the carburetor till they are out in the middle of nowhere with a dead battery.
@@Kevin24Seven that is a valid point. i haven't had a lot of experience with fuel injected bikes. all of my bikes thus far have had carbs. i guess my thinking is for off road, simple is better. if you can't fix it on the trail in the middle of nowhere, you kinda boned yourself. i always carry a couple of spare levers, SS hose clamps, and both copper, and steel wire on my bike, along with a few multi duty tools. saved my bacon more than once.
@@Kevin24Seven those aren't fuel injected
That looked frustrating but very fun and well worth the story in the end. Way to push the envelope to go where few people have gone. My wife and I use RAM phone mounts for our dirt bikes, trucks, boat, and atv and it has never once let go of our phones. They are like 70 bucks but I believe it is worth it. Have fun out there.
Props for the John Denver tune. One of his very best.
This is what makes great memories!
!!ADVENTURE!!
There's so many things I wanna say but don't really need to. You two are awesome and you've definitely learned what needed to be learned. 4 days of moto boot camp/survival! Ride on!
(One side note: the Tdub doesn't have enough power to justify street tires, the stock tires are all you'll need).
I love my Tdub, its a point and go into the wild type of bike 💖
So you guys definitely learned about tires from this... What I don't see in the comments is anybody telling you how to dig out faster. When your back tire buries itself like that, kick the bike over on its side, then pick it back up. Quickest and easiest way to get your back tire above ground. (And if you add a kickstart to your bikes, the dead batteries won't matter so much.)
And that's why they call it adventure riding. A story you can share with each other and other rider for the rest of your riding years.
You should give props to the cell phone case company!
You guys are adorable doofuses, don’t ever change.
Wow you both had really good attitudes for the situation given
Not 100% sure but I saw somewhere that u can actually put the kick start back on these bikes...gotta buy a few parts I guess but would be really helpful...Also u can always jump start by going back down the hill...anyway pretty intertaining vid...
And then watch some random dude on a Rokon cruise up and down that path like it’s a Tuesday nite👍🏻
Fantastic story and video!
You tell good stories well, my guys. Sorry to hear about your bike, but I’m glad I found you through it
This is a very informative video, on what not to do! Glad you two got out of that mess.
This was quite entertaining. Glad you both got out of there ok eventually. Life is an adventure.
Looks like you could have taken a 4wd truck down there, loaded up and drove out?
Good job getting out and heads up! 👍
How do you make it anywhere in the dirt with those god awful tires?
Hey what kind of tires did you have that were more for the street?
Must have been torture hiking all that way in sight of that lake. Please tell the general area you folks were riding.
In southern California near Temecula
@@magicalcerealbox I used to ride in the hills between Homeland and Lakeview and got the bike stuck badly in an erosion cut in the road.
Not sure why your batteries keep going dead.
Airing down on the tires and walking it along the brush line with help. Still a great video!
Best Girlfriend Ever!!!
Shyt you ain't lying
That his sister
That was fun! Impressive for street tires. Airing down may have helped a bit.
This was very entertaining! lol - you guys did great - really. That is a tough trail! Better to push your limits than sit on the couch! And think of all the stuff you learned from one short ride!
Could you send me a link so I could check them out?
So many things I would've done differently but at least it looked like you two had fun.
Love this now I’m at the Yamaha dealer
The exact same thing happened to me but I was in a full-size pickup truck. Saw the road less than a mile away. Unfortunately the trail went to a single track on the ridge of the mountain on the way down. Stuck. Had to get 3 trucks to pull me back up the hill
Looks like an Adventure... Mission accomplished!!!
This was an awesome adventure that these young people have experienced. They will learn from this. Excellent life lesson.
Guys, that’s what adventures are about, was fun to watch... funny, and well done.
What size sprocket do you have on there
been there done that;that's what makes dirt bikes fun
A good attitude makes your adventure fun.
Looks like the tracks were probably Coyote tracks. When you see the nails / claw marks in the tracks it’s a K9, and none it’s a feline. Looked like a big one though.
Just remember one rule; if you keep screaming "weeeee", you will be allright
I had a tw200 years ago. It wasn't the best hill climber, but still fun.
Haha those were dog tracks not mountain lion.... but yeah good video
i saw that
Nice video, it reminds me of the early days when RUclips was cool.
Great video! I have two words for you, though...Topo maps. (you'd still have an adventure!)
Loved this video. Thanks guys!
Those where K9 tracks , not mountain lion.
Really well done video guys!
Looks like Veil lake out in Temecula Ca where I live.
Wow great story thanks for sharing. I’ve been a rider many years. I’m usually alone so I appreciate the reminder of where I should go. And when. Wow 4 days. Also I’ll be careful following google 😆
I thought the TW had a backup kick starter
There's a kit you can buy. Only the older ones had it by default.
Please get a gps with terrain map, and you might never do,this again :)
Looked like the bikes were riding you guys up the hill.
Where is than southern California?
"A" for effort! "F" for achievement. Might I suggest riding with a dual sport Club. You'll learn so much in a short time, rather than floundering on your own. If one or two things had gone wrong, on top of what had happened, you may have died, at worst, broken bones, got assulted and lost your bikes when they were taken from you, at least.
I have a lot of experience now, but was even a worse rider, with less knowledge. Thankfully, I made it! I think "She" is a good rider, and can get better with some training and practice. You are both the future of the sport. Keep up the good work. But. it's ok to ask for help!
SMH... Of what NOT to do..lmao... But great fun memories... Dude you need to put a rock on that finger.. If she's NOT you're sister..
Honestly the best video on RUclips
Great job on the video!!!
Why didn't you use the kick-start
Yamaha removed the kick starter off of these bikes in like 2003 maybe...bad idea if you ask me but I guess they saved $10 on every bike they sold...
@@AlzWorld57 did they change the engine case? Could you install one ?
@@hammerhead1872 HammerHead187 Not sure but but I read it could be added back to later bikes...do a google search or youtube search...my tw200 is older and still has the kick starter...
@@hammerhead1872 There is a plug where the kick starter can be, and a kit available to put one back on, but sadly for much more than $10.
Learning can be so much fun when your young.
So sad. If you can walk across a stream you can take your bike across it. Learn how to 'bulldog' your bike down a hill like the hill climbers do. But what the hell they are out there doing it! Good for them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You go to union?
No, I toured it in high school. Kept the free shirt!
If your phone was still working, you could have used the "Fix your TW" app to fix the clutch.
always remember you have to get home!
I bet you guys were tired after that journey.
Next time switch the front brake lever with the clutch lever in a pinch...
A Wall That’s smart! Hadn’t thought of that, thank you!
I’ve always opted to preemptively cut both levers to half length if I don’t get bark-busters. I never grab the outer 1/2 anyway and aside from it being harder to catch and break, when full length levers break, they usually brake way to short to grab, like here.
Wrap electrical tape (carry a roll in your side saddles) around the end of the broken lever until you have a ball Gives you grip enough to still use the lever..
Have some vice grips in a tool bag and clamp them on to the stub and you can use it as a makeshift clutch.
They do start with a push.
Somewhere the Mars Rover is watching you two try to get up a hill on your TW200's and shaking it's head. Because even the Mars Rover knows that a TW200 will run without a battery... all you have to do is put it in 3rd gear, roll it down a hill with the key on, and pop the clutch, and it will start and run until you shut it off.
A Mars rover is a motor vehicle designed to travel on the surface of Mars. Rovers have several advantages over stationary landers: they examine more territory, they can be directed to interesting features, they can place themselves in sunny positions to weather winter months, and they can advance the knowledge of how to perform very remote robotic vehicle control. They serve a different purpose than orbital spacecraft like Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. A more recent development is the Mars helicopter. As of May 2021, there have been six successful robotically operated Mars rovers; the first five, managed by the American NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, were (by date of Mars landing): Sojourner (1997), Spirit (2004-2010), Opportunity (2004-2018), Curiosity (2012-present), and Perseverance (2021-present). The sixth, managed by the China National Space Administration, is Zhurong (2021-2022).
@@magicalcerealboxBoom. Roasted.
This is wow, I don't even know.... TDubbs, they are little mountain goats, this should not have been that epic. Jeeez!
I know, but they are just beginners. They need to build up speed and pull the clutch i tiny but in and it will chug
@@soproparmvfx6269 they shouldn't be out there.....
y'all are adorable.
Pretty sure those are creeks streams , not rivers. My tw would eat that stuff up lol
Y'all M'Fers Crazy.
Great video! One thing that might help in the future is next time your battery is low, Just roll start the bike. That would have save you all some time. I'm actually looking at buying a tw200 right now. Keep up the adventures!
Please tell me you left that janky-a$$ shovel up there....
Noted, if i get stuck in the woods im bringing my largest strongest friend to help lol hes 6'5" and weighs 240lbs+ should make my current tw200 look small.
I was gonna make a comment about how you aren't able to make it up these kills on a very capable bike until I realized you're rocking mostly street tires. Lol Hope you learned you lesson about street tires off road. Lol
amazing video
i would have made it down...or if i went back up like u...i would have ran next to it and gassed the throttle with it next to me...pushint it and gassing it...ive done that with a 500 lb enduro with slicks on a steep off road hill..
Kinda douchie messing with a stream that you could have walked through.
Great content
You guys are troopers! Great video!
Why not just use the kick start???
Early TW200s had kick starters as well as electric. Later models, not.
I don't know when Yamaha dropped the kick-start, early 1990's maybe.
T-Dubs have been in Yamaha's line-up since 1986.
@@surlyogre1476 I added a kick starter on my later model TW200. It is a worthwhile aftermarket addition.
Put those things on the pipe!
Stock TW batteries are trash...
Sweet I forgot I had 20 bucks in my phone case also
New favorite video
That made not want to get a Tw200
Bud just full send it up that hill, I k is the TW is a slower off-road bike but... she can pull some miracles outa 3rd from what I hear.
I thought it was 1st lol. It's a tractor with unlimited torque
@@ayyblyat9450 exactly, you can about out walk it as it put-puts in first gear.
Look like canine tracks, you can see the nails.
man that must have been a baby deer ! 40 pounds!
U2 AR the exact reason why they close roads to motorcycles, I suppose for your next thing you'll lite your toilet paper burn everything, you both should stay in town.
