+vice2vursa You are taking it out of context. He meant as in a complex lyricism. Was 2pac a god damn feel trip poet, HELL YEAH. But was he a complex lyricist, I don't think so. In most of his rap, 2pac goes straightforward. He calls a number 10 , a number 10. Complex Lyricist like Nas or Even Eminem, if you say, utter it in a more different way, like, What is (4+5-2+3+2-3+4+2)^2
tushar kaushik yeah I know, I said it for the ironic humor in it. a lot of people like to go around and claim tupac is the greatest rapper, most associate lyricism with tupac being givin that title even though dude was basic. in this video we here 2 chainz getting referred to as being lyrical in the same video where tupac is not considered a lyricist. it's just ironic and funny to me. But yeah most people who understands the art of hiphop know tupac was no lyrical genius. Nas and Eminem (my favorite rapper) are the ones that achieve that title.

Poulen Grimsley Right. Technically speaking, you can't compare, for example, Big L to Eminem, 'cause Em is either a 'Fuck you, satire'- type rapper or an inspirational type, and Big L was a say anything, 'cause it rhymes rapper. But they're both dope.
Brian Fortiz True. That's why I think true lyricism/lyricist change cultures and transforms people through music. A hot song is just a hot song. That music is just for the moment.

@@manicabawse2867 people always praise Eminem about the technical writing and rapping skills but back when I was a hip-hop oriented nightclub DJ the hip-hop crown didn't request Eminem songs and instead requested Jay Z, Biggie DMX. 50 Cent, I always took it as Eminem kinda making clowning around songs or just stuff that that the HipHop crowd didn't really relate to. Suburban white teens loved Eminem but that's not who was the Hip-hop nightclub crowd or the radio mixshow listeners. Eminem is kinda like the virtuoso guitarists that's shreds and shows off abilities when the people that are not musicians just want a relatable song instead.
The Works more like pig minds shit alike. He mentioned a lot of other rappers before coming to Em but you racists can't look past his skin. A white guy who likes Em is dickriding him as if Em got no skills. Em haters are twice as obnxious as his toxic stans. I'm not a Stan but i do know for a fact that Em would rap circles around your favourite rapper and your fav rapper would agree so you can fuck outta here.
I think it is about trying to 'test' them. Do they think Em's fluffed up and overhyped? Do they think he's great even though they can't feel what he sings about? Do they look past the lyrics? Etc. It's about starting conversations. Grandmaster Caz came up with a bunch of jews, Puerto Ricans, rastamen, Vikings, and bboys. He's not going to fall into the racist traps that some artists do *cough cough Lord Jamar cough cough* but he's not from Detroit, he's from a different generation, etc. There's shades of grey that can come out of the questions.
I'm from the UK and the lyricism here is rubbish. Stormzy and Dave are considered lyricists and intelligent, but compare that to a Nas or someone like that, they just don't match up. It's easy to put people on a pedestal who are considerably better than those around them when those around them are trash! And UK drill is terrible too. No musicality or thought process, just 'I'm harder than you'
Yea some of my favorite lyricists are from that area, for example Akala, Lowkey and Rhyme Asylum are fucking fantastic and are killing it when it comes to lyrics. Check em out if you haven’t heard of them
There's not a lot of people who make you feel the music like Pac did and he was a thinker. His beat selection is freaking crazy. Some of those beats were before their time. Pac is one of the greatest for his impact. Music ain't just bout lyrics. If you saying dope shit and yo beat flat the track is trash. Pac still in my Top 10
Lets break it down. Definition of lyricism 1) the quality or state of being lyric : songfulness 2) (a) : an intense personal quality expressive of feeling or emotion in an art (such as poetry or music) (b) : exuberance - the sort of author who inspires lyricism or invective, not judicious interpretation Allow me to simplify "AN INTENSE PERSONAL QUALITY EXPRESSIVE OF FEELING OR EMOTION IN AN ART (SUCH AS POETRY OR MUSIC)" Based on this definition, 2pac is the embodiment of lyricism Rap = Flow, Creativity, Voice, Content, Delivery/Energy, Credibility My personal preference in order of importance; 1. Content (Message) 2. Voice 3. Delivery/Energy/Passion 4. Credibility (Do they live the life they rap about?) 5 Flow 6. Creativity./Word play Top artists for each category; 1. Content = Immortal Tech, Dead Prez, 2pac 2. Voice = 2pac, DMX, Method Man, Nate Dogg, Snoop, Ice Cube, Ja Rule, Kasinova 3. Delivery/Energy/Passion = 2pac, DMX, Mystical 4. Credibility = 2pac, DMX, 50 Cent, Eazy E 5. Flow = Biggie, Nas, KRS, Rakim, Raekwon, Big Pun, Big L, Eminem, Big Daddy Kane, Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Kurupt, 2pac 6. Creativity/Word Play = Same as Above 2pac does not necessarily have the best Content, Voice, Delivery/Energy, Flow, Creativity but overall he has the most consistent qualities. His content may not be on Immortal Tech level but its good enough, plus he has a better voice, delivery/Energy, flow. 2pac in my opinion has the best voice followed by DMX 2pac does not necessarily have the passion & energy as Mystical or DMX but it is better than Eminem, Nas, Jay z, Rakim etc 2pac may not have been shot 9 times & made hundreds of thousand of dollars selling drugs like 50 cent but there are not many rappers who have been through what he has been through. He definitely lives the life he raps about. If I cant believe what the rapper is saying then I cant listen to them. 2pac does not consistently flow like Eminem, Biggie, Nas etc but he does have a handful of songs which are right up there. But he has better content/message, voice delivery/passion. 2pac is not necessarily creative, in fact he isnt. He gets straight to the point. He doesnt want people analyzing his words, he wants people to hear his message. With that said, Me & My Girlfriend is on another level. He tells not 1 but 2 stories (girlfriend & gun) and has great flow. Cant get any more creative than Me and My Girlfriend. Overall as a complete package = 2pac Your favorite rapper depends what qualities are important to you. Those that prefer flow & creativity prefer Biggie, Em, Nas, Jay z etc. For me I prefer content, voice & delivery & Credibility, therefore 2pac is the best overall rapper. And based off of the definition of "lyricism"...2pac is the king of lyricism.
To me Noveliss of Clear Soul Forces (and L.A.Z. E-Fav and Illajide as well actually), Underachievers, Denzel Curry, Kendrick Lamar, Mick Jenkins and Add-2 stand out as the best lyricists from this era that come to mind whilst typing. Much respect to Caz ofcourse, who is an essential legend to the culture
Every person who listens to rap in the east coast will always put Biggie above Tupac. I don't get it. Is it an east coast pride or something? Or you can't acknowledge Tupac as a lyrical beast?
If the shit Pac was doing was so easy & simple, everyone would've done it. If all those other guys were such great lyricist, why do some of them only have one to three albums? Pac had like six or seven album before he died. That man's body of work speaks for itself.
Hip-Hop fell off past 2000. Battle Rappers are the only ones coming with that pure Rap I once loved. Hip-Hop was seriously hot in late 80's to mid 90's.
I disagree with that , as you get older your taste in music will always be more towards your era. Doesn’t mean you don’t appreciate it but it’s not your era so if you make it another 20 to 30 years you’ll understand what he’s saying. You won’t be listening to your kids or grandkids music like you would your own...
I’m sure why he said so many New York artist is because he is from New York so you’re probably going to hear mostly East Coast artists and he also said he doesn’t really listen to a lot of music now but given that he is one of the originators of rap his views like your own as you get older will differ from the younger crowd and once you have kids & grandkids you won’t really be checking for there music either

Because all these new cats don't have the same level of talent as the guys who laid the foundations. They have more exposure and marketing and shit. They have a broader reach. So dumb fucks think just cause it reaches more people now, it's better. Fuck No. I feel exactly how Caz feels, except I would throw J. Cole, Joey Bad A$$, Lupe Fiasco and Drake on this list. Drake has some hot bars when he tries. I mean he doesn't really try a lot. He puts a lot a lot of sing song R&B type shit. But when he just spits bars, he got bars.
That be the NYC OG's that show no love or the youth just don't fuck with the OG's because they look at rap as a competition...everywhere else doesn't see it that way, it's more of a business so people help each other out more ........In the South, Bun B, 3-6 will do songs with the new artists...In the West, Snoop, E-40 and Too Short will do songs with the new guys...in the Midwest, Twista will do songs with new artists
Kay ouch!!
murakulus Nah, it's mainly the other way around. I've heard plenty of older rappers and producers give props to younger cats like Kendrick, J Cole, Joey Badass, etc. More times than not, it's the younger cats talking about "get that old sh!t outta here" or "don't nobody wanna hear these old outdated niggas". A lot of younger cats barely wanna listen to anything outside of the newer stuff.
2chainz is no where near a lyricist
Blank Name riiight!
Caz is and has always been a very sharp and analytical when it comes to interviews and panel discussions regarding hip-hop. He's one of the pioneers of this artform. He's seen it all! So whether you agree with him or not, he has every right to speak on this topic. Btw, Pretty much everything he mentioned I agree with. I have so much respect for my Bronx native! Peace!
Darryl Scott Caz came off like he's hating his less than fortunate life. He said "he can write what Tupac wrote, if he was thinking like Tupac was thinking, I highly doubt it, the pitiful part is that, I can't name at least 3 good song from Caz, that's some pitiful shit and on top of that, he's still alive and my nigga Makaveli been dead for nearly a quarter of a century and still more relevant this Caz. We all are entitled to our opinion, but not slander, or defamation and that's exactly what Caz subliminally tried to do. It's all good, his kids will learn more about Makaveli in colleges than they will about their own dad.
Big L,and Pun definetly should have been included in this conversation.Them 2 are arguably the most talented rappers ever!!!

Lets break it down.
Definition of lyricism
1) the quality or state of being lyric : songfulness
2) (a) : an intense personal quality expressive of feeling or emotion in an art (such as poetry or music)
(b) : exuberance - the sort of author who inspires lyricism or invective, not judicious interpretation
Allow me to simplify
"AN INTENSE PERSONAL QUALITY EXPRESSIVE OF FEELING OR EMOTION IN AN ART (SUCH AS POETRY OR MUSIC)"
Based on this definition, 2pac is the embodiment of lyricism
Rap = Flow, Creativity, Voice, Content, Delivery/Energy, Credibility
My personal preference in order of importance;
1. Content (Message)
2. Voice
3. Delivery/Energy/Passion
4. Credibility (Do they live the life they rap about?)
5 Flow
6. Creativity./Word play
Top artists for each category;
1. Content = Immortal Tech, Dead Prez, 2pac
2. Voice = 2pac, DMX, Method Man, Nate Dogg, Snoop, Ice Cube, Ja Rule, Kasinova
3. Delivery/Energy/Passion = 2pac, DMX, Mystical
4. Credibility = 2pac, DMX, 50 Cent, Eazy E
5. Flow = Biggie, Nas, KRS, Rakim, Raekwon, Big Pun, Big L, Eminem, Big Daddy Kane, Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Kurupt, 2pac
6. Creativity/Word Play = Same as Above
2pac does not necessarily have the best Content, Voice, Delivery/Energy, Flow, Creativity but overall he has the most consistent qualities. His content may not be on Immortal Tech level but its good enough, plus he has a better voice, delivery/Energy, flow.
2pac in my opinion has the best voice followed by DMX
2pac does not necessarily have the passion & energy as Mystical or DMX but it is better than Eminem, Nas, Jay z, Rakim etc
2pac may not have been shot 9 times & made hundreds of thousand of dollars selling drugs like 50 cent but there are not many rappers who have been through what he has been through.
Overall as a complete package = 2pac
Your favorite rapper depends what qualities are important to you. Those that prefer flow & creativity prefer Biggie, Em, Nas, Jay z etc. For me I prefer content, voice & delivery & Credibility, therefore 2pac is the best overall rapper. And based off of the definition of "lyricism"...2pac is the king of lyricism.
I completely agree.
