- Top 10 most common washing machine problems. Washer not working and the top 10 washing machine problems. I go over 50 different washer issues. Whether your washer is not turning on, not spinning, not draining, not agitating, not rinsing, wont fill, or not working at all… This video is bound to cover the problem that your washer is having. The stats for this list were all taken from my own call logs, out of 373 washer house calls. I mention quite a bit of parts in the video so I will also include a list of parts that can be used as reference to see what the parts are called and what they look like. But if you will be ordering a part, make sure to confirm that the part will fit the model of washer that you have.

I have one for you , old kenmore elite, years ago had problem with the lid , a guy from RUclips had a video , he didn't live far from me and fixed the lid switch by bending the metal hand slightly, it worked again , my new problem it wouldn't fill with water ? The only thing I could do was to manually fill it myself, it worked, Now it actually fills by its self ??? But it won't wash anymore just makes a humming sound ? I'm lost and DESPERATE!!!! Any advice you could offer me ???? Would greatly appreciate a reply . Thank you .

I agree; this guy is a genius. @@lukemccann - I have changed the coupler , capacitor and switch but the machine still does not start on its own, If I turn on, go underneath and manipulate the coupler anti-clockwise or clockwise , it agitates or spin but if I lift the lid or it comes to the end of the cycle , it stops and does not start back- Help !

I am an Assistant Manager at an appliance store, that also does repairs, and this walkthrough and explanation of issues is very accurate. Despite commission being part of my pay, I always recommend the older, analog models to my customers, as opposed to the newer front-load/stackable options, which are much more pricey. This is because issues often arise due to the manufacturing process put the control board right up front above the door, which ends up getting damaged fairly quickly because of the design. You pretty much covered everything in this video. I wish all my customers would watch this before coming to the store. Hah! It would save me from giving the same spiel time after time! Well done.

Do you have to have both hot and cold water hoses connected even if you don't use the hot Water, for the washer to run?

This is the most informative video that i have ever seen from a technician, lots of information thanks alot man.
One time my 20+ year old front loader was draining slowly, and barely completed the spin cycle. Removed the front panel and disassembled the hoses from the tub to the drain pump. Quickly located a nickel directly in the pump inlet. Removed it and rejoiced. 😀
I'm a maintenance technician and I've used almost everything posted for HVAC, Hot water tanks and Appliances on here to self teach and do my job more efficiently since Covid has prevented me from doing courses that usually help with all this. So grateful you post these videos and I will never stop using them.
6 minutes into your video and i can testify that the first few mentions are SPOT ON!!!! I went through 3!!!!; whirlpool, maytag washers in ONLY ONE Year!!!!! They were high priced garbage. I switched to speed queen so far so good.

You helped me fixed my washer tonight when I was about to call a repairman tomorrow since I have given up. It's the freaking door sensor that's causing the issue since when I used my finger to push the lever, it works but closing the lid won't. Thank you sir!

Good morning Jay. I’m a Handyman subscriber who has been watching your channel for about a year and half. Originally I was a secondary math teacher for 28 years who has always been repairing everything at home. Now being retired for last four years I’ve turned handyman. I have a love for learning. Your HVAC and appliance videos are top notch! Your very logical approach in explaining makes abstract concepts crystal clear. I’ve learned a great deal from your videos. By the way, I have a few experiences with water softeners. In this video where you refer to a problem that a customer had this “caviar” or small fish eggs looking stuff clogging the inlet supply filter in a washer, well that’s actually a case where the customer has a water softener that has failed. The resin tank has a type of “filter” that keeps those tiny light tan, translucent beads from leaving the tank when the water softener is in regeneration mode. Once that happens, those tiny beads get into the plumbing system and reek havoc. They can clog all the aerators in the faucets, clog the washing machine inlet valves, clog the toilet tank fill valves and even get inside the water heater. I thought you would like to know that. Keep up the excellent job your doing and I will keep watching. Thanks!
Good morning Richard! Sounds like you had quite the career path! Glad to hear you are enjoying the handyman work and that my videos are helping with furthering your knowledge! I definitely appreciate you explaining how the water softener can cause that! I actually called a senior tech about that one and he told me the same thing. The only problem is that there was no water softener installed in that house... So in the end I never did end up finding out where those small black beads came from.
Most softeners have a mesh screen but if not put a sediment filter on output because that can be a serious problem. I recently installed a carbon tank pre softener this greatly extends life of resin you mentioned, the chlorine kills resin. It also, removes most all chlorine so you don't breath it in while showering. Look at the AO Smith carbon whole house filter, looks like a softener resin tank at Lowes and carbon can be replaced after 600k gals.

I really enjoyed this, I busted out laughing every time he said “the laundry break is over“ 🤣🤣🤣 My laundry break has been three months long! I won’t get into the long story, but I’m getting an older washer, I cannot stand the newer ones. In the meanwhile I’m going to have to go to the laundromat ☹️ my old Maytag last 35 years with no service calls!

Just a few notes /comments: I work for a commercial laundry service company. I do on average 1500 calls per year, mostly apt complexes, universities and hotels. #1 when replacing a pump we use hose crimping plyers and just a towel. Saves alot of time. My biggest problem with pumps are g-strings and bobby pins. #2 Bad rear springs will cause water filling the tub to miss the tub and run onto floor. #3 we have alot of clogged stand pipes, do you see this?
#3 Maytag's have a safety mechanism to protect machine from severe out of balance situations. We have to reach between tub and cabinet to reset the arm. #4 I would have mentioned clogged fill hose screens for no or slow fill. We get alot of these. #5 I have never seen the pliers you showed for installing the boot spring. SQ training demonstrates using small screw driver. Where can I find these Pliers? #6 Also a twisted contorted door boot is a sure sign there is a bad shock. Most door boot holes (not rips) occur at the 12 o'clock position and the 2 o'clock position. We repair these using flex seal tape. It works really well. #7 I would have mentioned front load washer over soaping causing failure to drain or spin out water. I get alot of these calls. To clear out the excess soap we flush washer with fabric softener from dollar tree and the soap magically disappears. Last #8 front load washer smells bad and has gunk and mold in it. We use cheap toilet bowl cleaner in a wash cycle and the smell and junk is gone. I liked the video and I understand you could have went on for another hour easily just on these ten problems. I thought it was a professional presentation and informative. THANKS, I SUBSCRIBED

Given it's age, I figured I'd have to buy a new machine, because a service call just wouldn't be worth it. Enjoyed this method. It helped me to resolve a simple yet hard to find cause ofbreakdown.
I sort of volunteered to deal with issues that popped up with my employer's many washers and dryers we use across the campus. The previous approach had always been to buy an new unit when the old one quit working for whatever reason. Some times the unit was only a few months old. Due to security issues at repair tech was never called in to troubleshoot. This meant new a dryer purchased for broken door switches or a thermal fuses or a drive belts or drum rollers and new washing machines any time one would wear through a rubber motor coupling or 9 dollar pump. I thought it was great fun and a challenge to figure out what simple part was keeping the machine from working. I came upon many of the breakdowns on your list. My background was aircraft engineering and the toughest repair was figuring out the Kenmore Top Load Washer Transmission replacement like you said. This was back about 2002 before the RUclips videos of today and I just had to figure it out as I went along. I remember the transmission part was about 155 bucks from Sears Parts but still less than half the cost of a new unit. That same washing machine lasted another 12 years running 5-8 loads a day M-F.
Oh wow, that's too bad about those machines.. That got scrapped because of a bad lid switch or tripped thermal fuse. I worked with a guy named Rick who was also an aircraft engineer in the past. He was a smart guy too! (must run in the aircraft engineer blood) About the pricing though, when a company gets called out to replace a transmission, the cost of replacing it would be much higher than just the $155 part cost. The part gets marked-up, there's the trip fee, labor cost, and cost of shipping the part (many times I need to order it, not sure what it's like at other companies). Add all of that together and the price is easily over half the price of a new machine.

Excellent, very informative video! From what I saw points to bad MCU on my front loader. Also, shocks may be old as it bounces 3 or 4 times. Unplugged after 06 error code plugged back in and was acting weird then plug let out a bit of smoke like it was pulling too much power while the motor just spun slightly. It is an older Kenmore He3t so I'm sure either the MCU or ECU or both. May need a new plug as well, hmm... Thank you for the great video!

I find it so depressing to see that across industry, devices don't last nearly as long as those manufactured in prior generations. Great tip on tipping the machine back! I was soaked one day a few years ago.
I agree.. The average life of a new washing machine is 6-10 years. Whereas the old washers can easily get to 30 years or more. Haha yeah, I know what that's like. I used to hate replacing drain pumps or cleaning the filter. But now with tipping the unit back, I rarely get soaked anymore.

Great video, thanks for taking the time to make this! Those black fish eggs that you mentioned were in the screens and toilets and other fixtures are the filter media or resin from the water softener, when they flushed the hydrant they probably turned the water back on too fast and the pressure sent the resin all through the system from the mineral tank in the basement. I’m a plumber by trade and see this once in a while, if you have a water softener or acid neutralizer or any other treatment system that uses loose granular media, you should always turn water back on very slowly until system fills back up. Thanks for all your knowledge. I was working on my son Amana washer that would stop at the final spin, but when he pressed the start button it would complete. I did something online that said it could be the lid switch or the shift actuator. He had a service come in and it stumped the service tech from the codes he got on his diagnostics. I not sure how he did that diagnostic since there is no display on this model. He did confirm it was the shift actuator. I wish I could have confirmed that for sure to same him money. Live and learn.
And thank you for watching and sharing your washer experience! It's constant learning with washers. I already got used to coming across problems I can't figure out on about a bi-weekly basis. The machines that have self-diagnostics do help though. Nowadays there is a lot of info on RUclips, including how to put the machine into a diagnostic test mode so it's getting easier to find solutions. I am sure you will get it fixed next time!

I had to give up on my 13 year-old top loading Whirlpool. Not one failure of any kind since new but last week rust spots appeared on wife’s new white blouse. Looked carefully in holes at bottom of basket-rust peaking through so I ordered a new 4955 top loader Whirlpool. Always had long trouble-free life from Whirlpool although they have dropped in CR ratings and you said so as well.
I stripped old washer apart in back yard and found hub of basket rusting badly. No fixing that. Had it been stainless it might go another 13 years.

Came here becos I have a Whirlpool ( 20 yrs old ) where the tub is banging on the side during the spin cycle ( got unbalanced with coat/jackets ) . However it does not have 4 suspension springs. Some other mechanism on bottom. Have to keep looking at what is off. 3 horizontal springs on bottom look fine. So something else is the prob....

You hit my problem on the head exactly, thank you.
One that was not covered, and you should check before you call the repair person is this... Some model washers come with an accessibly long drain hose to make it easy to put into the wall drain receptacle which eliminates the use of clamps to prevent the hose from coming out of the wall from the water pressure when draining. The problem is if the hose inside the wall receptacle is lower or even with the water in the tub then it starts to set off the emergency shut off system. Solution, simply pull out the long hose out of the wall receptacle and cut off 50% of the long hose and put it back in and BINGO! Problem Solved! If by cutting off the long hose and the hose wants to jump out of the wall drain receptacle, then just get a clamp to hold the hose down in the wall receptacle.
I sounds like you are on the correct path. We live out in the sticks, and can't get a repairman come out in less than 3 weeks. We have a flex washer, that upper washer works fine. Bottom washer will not respond at all. It will not go into calibration, or diagnostic mode. It pumps out water and then stops there. I got a new PCB board and installed it. I still does the same thing. No codes on lower washer. Thank you Stuck

Great job. I wish I had tracked all of the repairs done over the years like you have done in this video. We had three appliance stores at one time and saw the transition from well made heavy duty home appliances to the throw away designs of today. Fortunately having old school electronics knowledge I am able to overcome most repair issues. understanding digital base 2 algebra is needed to interpret the error codes on Whirlpool built top load machines.
We saw the transition from Unique designs from three main manufacturers to the consolidation into two and then the invasion of the foreign made products.

The pricing of parts has made all but the simplest repairs economically prohibitive. A small plastic door shim for an original Maytag dryer has went from $2.50 to $16.00. Electronic oven controls are as much as $380.00 and the electronic timer or ECB for the cheapest top load that you referenced several times is $280.00. I just had a Maytag top load with a bad actuator that I replaced only to discover the transmission bearing were bad. I advised the customer to buy a Speed Queen. They have two good models and one still has the heavy motor, belt and transmission like a commercial laundry machine.
Almost all manufacturers have given in to the big box store format of selling. Independents must join buying groups to be competitive on shrinking margins.
Well, enough of my old guy soapbox for now. Its good to see a young man in the business.

Well done explaining everything. I'm a retired law man, you would made an excellent law man explaining to violators why that are being arrested or ticketed. Occasionally I've met governors and a president after being on the president's guard. You would have also made a good lawyer or even the President!
