  • Hardly anyone knew of a lonely small ranch found just north of Epping, New Hampshire. However, after multiple disappearances in the area, two of those cases would somehow find a connection with its owner. This would be the beginning of a long and terrible investigation for officers.

Shout out to one of the true heroes of this story: Sheila's first husband. He realised his daughter was being abused and ended the situation immediately unlike a lot of parents in these stories who stay with the abusive partner for whatever reason and allow their child to suffer because of empty promises (that the abusive partner will stop and actually change 🙄)

100% he dodged a major bullet there for himself and his daughter. My grandparents lived in Epping at the same time as LaBarre. She often sold produce from her farm at local markets and my grandparents bought from her a few times...Nowadays, she is at NH State Prison, and my husband works there. He said that he's worked with some of the worst people, convicted of some of the most terrible crimes. However, he said that NOBODY makes him quite as uncomfortable as Sheila. He said something about her is off, and it gives him the creeps. Pure evil.

My cousin had actually found himself in a similar situation. He married a woman who started abusing alcohol and abusing their daughter who was barely a toddler. He worked two jobs and once came home to see doors unlocked, the house freezing cold, his daughter in tears in her crib, her mother nowhere in sight. He divorced her immediately and raised his daughter on his own. He also built his own successful business. His daughter is in her 20s now and is an absolutely lovely young woman.
Sadly, same story happened to his brother, my cousin, but he chose his wife. They had two daughters. I couldn't help because I was still a teen when that was happening and now I've lost all contact with them. They didn't show up for my father's funeral and even his siblings have no idea where he is.

I was really good friends with a guy who was the chillest, toughest dude. He was totally normal and not at all a weirdo. He got into a serious car accident and was in a coma for a month. He awoke and was completely different and would stutter at times attempting to explain seemingly unimportant aspects of any basic thing almost in an obsessive compulsive way and be unable to let it go until he repeated in slightly different ways, the explanation of what say. "The plate hit the ground and shattered. No the plate dropped to the floor and broke, i mean the object sailed in an arc onto the floorboards and broke into pieces". Ok the next part had me messed up cause the 3 types of people i despise most are child molesters, rapists and those who hurt children in that order. This guy soon after compulsively sought out under age girls to have sex with (child mo). He was caught something like 3 times having had sex with like 15 yr old girls. Multiple attempted rapes on hiking trails and i mean hed hide and jump out from the bushes on unsuspecting females trying to rape them. I cant remember if he actually raped them or they were able to stop him but he definitely attempted with all his strength to rape them. He ended up going to jail i think but everyone, especially his brothers who used to hold him in such high regard (as did literally everyone of his many friends). I can say that i have 0 sympathy for him as he is now because his victims arent any better because of what he used to be. However the head trauma definitely caused him to become a complete sexual predator and everyone including myself can say for the 23 or so years prior, he never showed any signs whatsoever and was always popular with girls and hed always had beautiful smart girlfriends. I mean this guy was just a super popular, rugged laid back dude then he completely morphed after the head injury into a complete psycho.

I watched this in an episode of "Deadly Women." Kenny's mother was interviewed, and she was so heartbroken when she heard of what happened to her son... who only wanted to experience love from someone. She said her son was so sweet and kind and wouldn't hurt a fly so when she heard of the tapes where Kenny was forced to say he molested his siblings, she was beyond heartbroken. It's speculated he defended himself, and she snapped, killing him.

Yes - the moment you abuse someone, you’re no longer the victim, you’re the perpetrator, in my opinion. Adults are responsible for their actions, no matter what happened to them as a child. That being said, it’s so important that family cycles of abuse don’t continue, in part because it can lead to people developing into monsters like her.

Anything that anyone goes through in their past is NEVER an excuse for harming innocent people. I also had a very troubled childhood, I have suffered numerous head injuries (including one resulting in a large crack in the frontal lobe of my skull) and have been diagnosed with General Anxiety and Borderline Personality Disorder. I have many trust issues with people but I get up everyday, go to work, pay my taxes, take care of our child with my husband, and live a normal peaceful life. I also take medicine and see a therapist on a regular basis because that is the responsible thing to do when you are suffering from a mental illness. I would never ever think of harming anyone for any reason like these horrible people do and I am sick and tired of them as well as others making excuses for them because they had a rough upbringing. So many people have it rough growing up and they refuse to use it as an excuse for making poor or downright horrible decisions.
**EDIT** Thank you to anyone for your kind words. I greatly appreciate it. ♥️
I want to clarify that my comment is not intended for those who are genuinely suffering from a mental illness as a result of their past (or for any other reason) who are so far gone that they are not on the same level of reality anymore to control their actions or determine what is right and wrong anymore. Those are people who I believe are truly suffering and who the insanity plea was originally put into place for. People like the sad and tragic case of Austin Harrouff who I will always believe was truly mentally too far gone at the time of his actions to know what he was doing (even though they deemed him fit to stand trial). Then there are people who use their mental illness and troubled past as a scapegoat for their actions. Those are the people that I am referring to in my original comment.

while I agree that it doesnt excuse abuse and violence, Id also argue that its more nuanced then that. If the condition and downward spiral is bad enough there is a breaking point where its hard for some people to gain back control over their actions without outside help. As an example theres the pretty famous case of a girl that early on got abused in multiple ways and developed sociopathic and violent tendencies. She eventually got adopted by a family that wanted to care for her but she displayed violent behavior, animal cruelty and tried to kill her parents as well as kill and sexually assault her younger brother (while still being a kid). Luckily for her tho she got into a programm that specialized on cases like her and she was able to develop empathy as well as new sense of right and wrong and was able to live a fairly normal life into adulthood. But now imagine if a girl like her never got the chance of professional help - its easy to dismiss horrible actions as a easy choice but sometimes these people certainly arent in control anymore.

The BDSM community is usually very respectful of every participant's needs, they encourage enthusiastic consent and discussing every detail of the experience beforehand. The 50 Shades book is entirely inaccurate in this regard, and so is what Sheila did. It's not BDSM, it's abuse and exploitation. It's disgusting how she goes around saying she needs to rid the world of child offenders, and then abuses and kills a mentally ill person. My heart goes to the victims and their families.

    • @CoffeehouseCrime
      @CoffeehouseCrime  2 года назад +265

I hear you! My gut feeling is that Sheila originally used BDSM through her phonecalls and advertisements as a means to find a man who was willing and happy to let their guard down, it was evident she had some fantasies in domination, etc.. Through this kind of fantasy she slowly coaxed these men into abuse, in which at that point I agree it was no longer BDSM. I don't know much about BDSM (in honesty) but my intention was not to paint the community in a bad light. What I had hoped to highlight was that she had used BDSM as a way to trap, exploit and then abuse multiple men who unfortunately were not able to say no. Even in the supermarket Kenneth wasn't able to accept external help. I'll keep your comment in mind and try to bring more clarity around these subjects in future videos. 🙏

@@PoptartParasol That's not what I meant at ALL, although maybe the way I phrased it might have indicated otherwise. Maybe I should go into this topic more in depth:
You see, BDSM typically consists of four components: Bondage, Domination, Sadism, and Masochism. Though of course, a person can be into BDSM without participating in most of these things. Maybe they just like bondage, or are into the domination aspect without any of the typical sado-masochism components, which is perfectly fine. But THE most important aspect of BDSM is *consent.*
You see, when it come to the Sadism aspect of BDSM, it's usually accompanied by Masochism. Sometimes, a partner will be turned on by the pain inflicted onto them. This can be anything as light as spanking to more heavy "punishments" like whipping/flogging, basically whatever the receiver's pain threshold will allow.
Now, the _reason_ I mentioned the importance of aftercare is because even if a masochist (often a submissive as well, though not always) enjoys the act of receiving pain in the moment, their mind may still react to the treatment as abuse after the fact, which is why nurturing care is required.
I only mentioned that detail about aftercare in the first place because there a surprising amount of abusers who try to co-opt BDSM ideas without wanting ANY of the responsibility that comes with that, like taking care of your partner and respecting their consent/boundaries.

I had nearly forgotten about this, and it happened not far from home. This story become news around the same time as the Barbara Asher case where a NH man died at the hands of a dominatrix, which seemed like a weird coincidence. You might also be interested in the Julia Enright murder case. Despite the infrequent bizarre cases like this, it is a very safe state and a beautiful place to live.

Hi Adrian. I just want to say well done with the channel 👏 I'm a Criminology graduate. So I have a real interest in True Crime. If you're taking any recommendations, please could you do a video on Billie Jo-Jenkins. This is a very interesting case. I've been torn between the theories that people have put out about this murder. Id be interested to hear your own opinion. Anyway it's been 25 years since this happened, and the police recently announced they were going to review forensic evidence again. I'd really like to see you make a well balanced and articulate presentation on this case (like you have done with each video). Many thanks, and keep up the good work.

"...personally I'm not buying it..." Thanks for that straightforward statement, personally I wouldn't take it for free. Adrian, you have a great way of delivering terrible stories from this horror show of a world without being too over the top nor blasé about the terrible things that we humans can do to other living beings. This story was one I had never heard of from other true crime channels (Ballen, That Chapter, True Crime Recaps, etc) so thanks for the effort you put into this. Have to say it is so far out in left field that I'm going to have to view it again just to make sure I understand how this completely twisted woman did what she did. Thanks and cheers from Calgary AB, Canada.

This one is close to home for me, to be honest. Before I was born my aunt used to work with Shiela at Dr. LaBarre's office. To hear her tell it Shiela was constantly belittling everyone in the office and going berserk when she was told no. She ended up driving my aunt to quit so she didn't have to deal with it anymore.
My dad was a regular patient at Dr. LaBarres, and after I was born i was brought with him to the office and left me with her. She used to watch me while my dad had his back set. Really creepy looking back on it now.
