Ahoy pirates! Some have been asking if I'm going to play the games, and I've actually been livestreaming Kingdom Hearts 1 Monday and Wednesday nights @ 6PM EST! If not do ask him, he problably will recommend 1,2, birth by sleep/358/2 days, and branch from there, these 4 games are the core history of KH, there are other games that Will show you extra info to understand the complete scenerios, but these 4 Will give you most of the base you may need, also about difficulty settings, o do not know If they changed, but i remember If you choose the hardest ones, you get some extra content and explanations(played only the originals, so I do not know or remember If It was the case or not), which Will not only add to the gameplay, they also used to give us a hype of what Will come

Believe it or not, the song from what the video calls the KH Recap is an instrumental version of the song from the opening. In all three of the numbered games (Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts II, and Kingdom Hearts III), the 'recap' plays if you linger on the title screen, whereas the Opening plays when you start a new game.

For clarification, whenever someone talks about “hearts”, they aren’t really referring to the bodily organ that pumps blood.
A “heart” in Kingdom Hearts is very much like a soul. It’s a person’s identity, individuality, personality, and even contains their memories and emotions. The heart is what makes a person a person. Without it, while still alive, a person won’t be whole or complete.

@smeartyke It's actually a Misnomer. The Heartless are in fact a heart corrupted by darkness. Where Nobodies are vessels without a heart.
A Heartless and Nobody are beings that have no "Hearts" aka incomplete beings and yearn to have one to be complete once again. Darkness can prey on those "hearts" and become Heartless.
@@SyLuX636 No Heartless are literally the Hearts themselves turned to Darkness. And the husk left behind if it was a strong heart becomes a Nobody. It's why I said the name "Heartless" is a misnomer. Hell even Ansem the Wise admits this in one of his reports
@@SyLuX636 You're half correct. Heartless don't yearn for completeness/wholeness in the same sense that the Nobodies do. This is because Heartless (contrary to their name) actually do retain a Heart. Albeit a heart that's consumed by Darkness, but a Heart nonetheless. If you've seen gameplay or played the games yourself, you may recall that if a Heartless is destroyed by a Keyblade, that will free the Heart trapped inside and then deliver it onto Kingdom Hearts.
A Heart contains both Light and Darkness, and ideally it contains these two forces in equal amounts. If a Heart is consumed by the forces of Darkness that person will become a Heartless, a creature which acts violently and destructively based upon primal instinct and occasionally takes orders from someone who has mastery over dark magic.
However if that same person had a particularly strong Will, their body will remain behind after a Heartless is formed. The empty body is henceforth called a Nobody. Nobodies are for the most part incapable of feeling emotion, however they do keep memories from their previous life. Unlike the Heartless, Nobodies can actually be intelligent, meaning they can plan and organise and some can even retain a human appearance.
Hopefully this explanation clears up some confusion. Which I can't blame you for, because lets be real, the lore of this whole series can be really f**king confusing, even for veterans like myself.

Btw, I highly recommend playing KH2 before playing KH358/2 Days. The plot twists are better if you play 2 first

KH -> CoM -> 2 -> Days -> BBS -> DDD -> 3
Agreed, release order is always best to avoid spoilers, you aren't meant to know the events of 358/2 Days when playing KH2.

It's fine that you don't understand each opening. Each game is a couple dozen hour RPG. A lot happens in each game. Take your time. Enjoy the ride that is the playable Disney Battle Shonen anime, complete with spiky hairstyles and the power of friendship.
Utada Hikaru is the vocalist on each song. Her voice is amazing, Ive practicaly grown up with her music thanks to KH. Being confused is expected XD The openings are primarily symbolism of a characters mindset and things that actually happen in-game its kept vague on purpose. The stained glass murals represent a person's heart, so you'll be seeing them a lot. XD Also Face My Fears from KH3 has to be my favorite opening song since Skrillex, who is actually a big fan of KH, Produced the song.

I will always love how Kingdom Hearts 1's opening directly leads into the game even being fully canon as just the trippy dream sora has at the start of the game
KH2 did the same thing as well.
Fun detail about the Dream Drop Distance opening: before being ported to home consoles (PS4, Xbox, etc.), this game was exclusive to the 3DS. So the opening used the dual screens by putting all the sorcerer Mickey stuff on the bottom screen. IIRC, the opening was also in 3D.
Also, fun detail about the Kingdom Hearts 3 opening: Utada Hikaru (who sings every single Kingdom Hearts opening song) is fruends with Skrillex (which in and of itself is kinda shocking). She was originally gonna collab with him to remix the Kingdom Hearts 3 credits song (which had already been recorded), but, when they met up to do the collab, they ended up actually recording an entirely new song instead, which is the song you heard in the Kingdom Hearts 3 opening.

I've always interpreted this as everyone's destiny is connected to Sora.
358/2 Days in the collection was made into just a cutscene movie but honestly it doesn’t do the game’s story justice as it cuts a lot of the emotional moments from the game out. I recommend playing the actual game if you can (it’s on the DS). That way you can really get more invested into the characters.
I agree. As someone who's played the ds version, the cutscene movie for the console versions is so disappointing. I thought it was gonna be properly adapted like BBS was.
@ I know but no it was made into a badly made cutscene movie. So many good moments cut out just because they were text box cutscenes and not speaking ones.

Also the bit covered by the mobile games is shown on a channel series called Kingdom Hearts Timeline. Does a really good job covering all of those scenes.
So those glass floors are representations of a person's heart. It's their "Station of Awakening". The one represented on it are whose heart it is. Smaller images displayed on the Station of Awakening represent close connections that that particular heart has with other hearts. So at the end of the KH2 opening, you see the boy essentially standing in Sora's heart, and it had pictures or Goofy, Donald, and Sora's two islander friends Kairi and Riku.
There are a lot of metaphors in these, so when you see something like for example sora floating or in the water don't take it too literally it means something but you have to play the game to understand
Also, the "guy with only one move" is the half of Sora that represents pure darkness of the heart in the KH lore description wise.

Resisting the urge to go on a rant about Kingdom Hearts, but I love these games so much and I am so happy to see more people look into them. Also the guy that voices Sora in English in the KH games is Haley Joel Osment and he has been voicing Sora for over 20 years, he was 15 when the first game was made. Now if you will excuse me I will be replaying the entire series again x.x

Trying to figure out the kingdom hearts series from the introductions is a crazy thing to try and attempt. But I'm sold on following your journey to see how much you were able to predict. You're in for a crazy, but very fun ride.

I’m really happy to hear someone else like Face Your Fears (the KH3 song)! A lot of people dislike it, but it’s such a vibe!
Honestly I grew to really like Face My Fears. But it is my least favorite of vocal songs by Utada Hikaru in Kingdom Hearts.
I actually love "Council of Cloaks" and I am totally going to use that in the future.

The opening of the first game leads right into gameplay. The opening ends with Sora standing on that stained glass panel of Snow White, and gameplay begins with said stained glass as the platform you run around on for the first minute or so. The opening segment of the game is a dream Sora is having, and there are three stained glass panels depicting Disney Princesses that he is on at different points in said segment. The antagonist of the first game is a League of Disney Villains, and their plan involves kidnapping the Seven Princesses. The three depicted in the stained glass in Sora's dream are already kidnapped before the game begins. Well actually, two of them are and a third (and fourth) is kidnapped before Sora's first encounter with any of the Disney Villains.
Just in case you didn't know, the 'Cloaked Council' as you called them are all original characters specifically for the Kingdom Hearts verse, much like himself. They pick up the role of series-wide antagonists after one of their number hijacks the plot of the first one as the 'true' antagonist toward the end.
Then there's the fact that it is a dream that is more than just that... it is a dream that signifies the choices we make and the paths those choices place us on.
Knowing what happens in the games, these openings really have some crazy things going on when you have context for it. Without the context it all looks pretty inconspicuous, but with it is a completely different story.

The water is a metaphor for depression, anxiety, and other negative emotions that could cause one to feel like they're suffocating or losing one's sense of self.

I guess internally they're titled recap because they use footage from the game you're about to start but uhh yeah I've always called it a sizzle or demo reel because that's what we would call the same video that plays if no one starts the game for a minute at an arcade cabinet.
I actually think it's really cool that despite coming out in the ps4 era where it's less common that KH3 still has a sizzle reel because games don't do that as often anymore.
KH is one of the best series ever, it truly has an amazing story that touches the heart no pun intended, and the combat is super fun and well put together. There is a reason it has survived over 20 years. It will always be my favorite series.
This frame 36:00 its really a shame you can't experience it when these were still trailers and you had to wait years for the next game to come out. But when this frame got shown the whole fanbase freaked out due to story related reasons regarding Aqua (blue haired woman)

God, i played these games when i turned 19 in 2019, so i didn't have nostalgia glasses for them. Even without nostalgia glasses, these games very quickly rose up to my top ten favorite video games series, and it still holds it's spot strong. I highly recommend you play these games. You will not be disappointed in the slightest.

The Kingdom hearts story is only complicated because it is a LOT to remember. For instance this guy named Barry had his friend explain all of the kingdom hearts lore as best he could on stream before kh3 released and it took 7 hours

Like, You speak of heartless, then You have to explain the hearts and nobody, and the nobody link to the organization, and xemnas to xehanort and ansem and it's a mess

2:58 so to explain briefly, he has dreams about this, as he is here, but way later in the games, nearing the end point of the series where it currently is at, it gets explained what actually happens here.
Kingdom Hearts is such a moving series as a whole, just realizing it is about a kingdom that is comprised of worlds created by the hearts of childrens' imagination. That alone gives it a sense of both bittersweet nostalgia, as we have all been children. Then theres the concept of the Heartless being the souls of children who are corrupted by the mentality of adults, that are unable to enjoy being kids because of them understanding the world of adulthood.
Then there is the fact that the games are a full disney tie-in in the form of a multiverse a la MCU style timeline/dimensional pseudoscience. They do such an amazing job of it.

No I played a lot of the Sega Aladdin and Lion King game, and super mario, but that was pretty much it.

This may sound super dramatic however If your inner child is still alive there is a sense of awe and childlike joy your first time through as of YOU are the main character not sore (the main character). The "one Sora, one destiny" is a direct reference to a buddhist mantra i am pretty sure. Sora is the japanese word for "sky" so it translates weirdly to english. The Sora character is named in the original japanese with the kanji for sky hence the reference.
Just came across the video wanted to see if this was a blind first time getting in to KH. Have to say shame on her chat they just dumped her into this. KH has been running for 22 years with 13 games not one of them are in order of time line or time & space lol. And the Xehanort lore dear lord thats a mind melt. Its always nice to see new people dive into the madness of KH.
She said no plotline spoilers and I'm like don't worry you won't remember them all anyway. I wish I had been able to stay with the app game before 3 finished. I had phone problems.
Sanctuary is not only my favorite KH opening, and is the theme of the entire series imo if you listen to the lyrics, but its up there in my top 10 favorite songs of all time. The metal version by Elan Vital is absolutely AWESOME.

Kingdom Hearts has some of the most wild VA casting. For most of the characters, they managed to bring in the original cast, though there are some characters who, while they couldn’t get the original VA, they have the VA who took over for shows/toy products fill in, notably Tom Hanks was only the voice of Woody in the Toy Story feature films, but his brother Jim Hanks voiced Woody in the non-feature films, all the toys, shows, and KH3. I didn’t know until recently that the Genie’s VA in Aladdin 2 and everything else but the original was Dan Castellaneta, who is the VA for Homer Simpson. Oh, and Sora is voiced by the Sixth Sense (I see dead people) actor. How Kingdom Hearts had a budget left for a game after all the S tier voice actors they’ve gotten is crazy to me.
There's a lot of repeated imagery but that's because those moments are such landmarks in the overall plot of the series. Each time you start a new game and see them again they hold just a little more weight than the last time.
Roxas, Xion and Axel still are the best trio till this day for me. I love them so much.
Nobody understands the Kingdom Hearts 1 opening, not even us fans.
Everything ties into the story, a game mechanic exist its somehow part of the story.

I guess it can get repetitive but for me Simple and Clean could be an opening to EVERY Kingdom Hearts game, I love it to bits
And while most of the ending songs are just reprises/less bop versions of the openings, KH3 had its own separate ending song, Don't Think Twice, which might be my 2nd favorite vocal song, it's so good.
(Also there are two versions for each song, one in English and one in Japanese, with JP versions actually having a connection to each other. Hikari (JP Simple and Clean) being about a start of an relationship, Passion (JP Sanctuary) about being in it for some time, with Face my Fears not having much significance, but Oath (JP Don't Think Twice) is about marriage.

All the recaps are cuz of the combo of long periods of creation gaps for main stories and the confusing jigsaw of all the games and how they connect

One of Kingdom Heart's greatest weaknesses is also kind of its strength; its convoluted plot and the absolute spider web of a narrative. It uses a lot of abstract concepts and layers of meaning that can be hard to follow if you're not paying absolute attention, and a lot of it straight up just doesn't make sense. Buuuut... As long you just wanna smack evil around with your favorite Disney/Final Fantasy characters at your side, you'll have a great time.

Ok so a lot to try to explain without spoilers or revealing anything too serious just things that really aren't explained much but still proceed with a little caution i have organized it in a way you can skip over something if need.
the glass florrings: represents a persons heart.
The chess pieces: each represent someone important to the story.
The water is important as its connected to a important world revealed in 3.
Everyone is connected to sora he is the key to everyone else that is all I can say.
Roxas and ventus are 2 different people you will figure out who they are eventually.
Nominee is the blonde girl with the white dress.
The hand boy: is named Riku you will figure that out at the start of game 1
2 eye colors are important the blue of soras and the goldish brown of another person's you will figure that out eventually.
You cant play recoded or 358/2 anymore unless you have access to a ps emulator otherwise its just the cutscenes from final mix
The mobile games are cannon and are needed for the story find youtube videos to explain it all because they got shut down
Time travel is involved and it does become confusing if you dont pay attention.
There are trios the birth by sleep trio the twilight town trio, the regular trio(idk the nickname of them off the top of my head), and the Disney trio.
Anything else you have questions on I will try to explain if you ask i will do my best to avoid spoilers and will tell you if it would reveal too much.
I hope you have a good time with this game series it was one of my favorites cant wait for the next one to be released.

I actually super adore Face my Fears, it isn’t my favorite KH song but a lot of love was put into it! Skrillex produced it alongside Utada and others so it was in no way done without approval from all parties involved since the OG game.
I also got to see him perform this live as a surprise guest at EDC Las Vegas a few years ago which was so baller cause by coincidence there happened to be a lot of KH fans myself included in that crowd.

So the games that were made between the release of Kingdom Hearts 2 and 3 were primarily games which the series creator, Nomura, wanted to make as a way to tell the story he wanted. Which is why there's over a decade of waiting for many long time fans that's been around since 2 came out back in 2005.
Of course, the Final MIx games were made to be like remasters which has better textures and the Critical Difficulty. In fact, fans were so used to the Critical Difficulty that they were unhappy that it wasn't in KH3 despite how it was the games's first release and not a Final Mix Version.
Also, there's moments where certain things aren't properly explained. Especually due to how they weren't given much of thought when they're told to us. And I'm sure that a lot of people reading this comment would know what I'm talking about. Especially since it's a moment in DDD involving Sora bein told something by one of the other characters.
Kingdom Hearts is a very convoluted story, but you enjoy it anyways because it's good vibes.
Here's my required order for playing Kingdom Hearts.
Never played Kingdom Hearts: play in RELEASE order.
Have played Kingdom Hearts: play in CHRONOLOGICAL order.
all its interesting, story about the 3 master keyblade, Sora Ventus and Roxas, all mixing and all separated at the same time, its amazing how was Sora to all the adventure and now are more master keyblade and all swords they can manage

Hoping you'll see this message, I'm sorry if this suggestion ends up being redundant, but I don't know if you already have someone giving you advice in this regard: when you get to play these games, it's really, really important that you play 358/2 days AFTER Kingdom Hearts 2.
358/2 was put before 2 in the collection because, when the collection was first released as 2 different discs you had to buy, they needed to have 2 games and one movie on each disc (KH1, Chain of Memories and 358/2 for the 1.5 collection and KH2, Birth By Sleep and Re:Codes for the 2.5).
However, 358/2 was made AFTER KH2 way back when and it is meant to be played/seen 4th, as it spoils some of the most important plot beats of KH2, plus its emotional moments need previous knowledge of KH2 to hit that much harder.
The story of KH makes sense if you take it very slowly. Vveeerrrry slowly

Oh god, I forgot how much the opening of Chain of Memories spoils major moments of the first game. Then again, some of those same moments are also in the KH2 opening...
Also weird that the Days opening was put in before KH2, since the rest of these were in release order.
As for the Re: and the Final Mix parts of the games, the Re: is actually short for "remake", since Chain of Memories was originally a 2D sprite based game on the GBA but got a full 3D remake for the PS2 soon after KH2 came out. Likewise, Coded was a spinoff that was originally for older phones and later got a remake for the DS. It's also the only game in the series you can skip, since it's just a small simulation one of the side characters is running and doesn't actually tie into anything. As for the Final Mix parts, when the first game was released outside of Japan they added a few extra things to it. A year or so later they released a new version in Japan only called Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix that not only had all the stuff added in the western release, but they also added a bunch of other things to it and rebalanced a few things, and this was Japanese only. Additionally, Kingdom Hearts II didn't have any differences between the Japanese and western releases, other than a few bits of censorship, but they still did a Final Mix version for Japan only as well. It was actually part of a bundle that also included the PS2 remake of Chain of Memories and was called Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix+. The west DID get the CoM remake, though. Additionally, the Final Mix versions of the games were Japan exclusive for over a decade, until finally they were the versions used for the HD remaster collections, allowing us in the west to FINALLY be able to play them in English.
