Years ago Channel 4 had a week where they "mashed" two of their shows together as a one off bit of fun. 8 out of 10 cats mashed with the game show Countdown, the staple of afternoons on channel 4. It worked so well that it has become a tv series all of it's own. Rachel and Suzy come from countdown, and Jimmy and all the other contestants come from out of 10 cats.

"Dictionary Corner" is not a competing team, but basically Susie Dent saying whether the word counts, and making some observations about the meaning (she's a lexicographer). And Rachel Riley does the math (she's a graduate in mathematics, and is often good-heartedly mocked by Jimmy for wasting her talents on these shows).

The banter is in the much later episodes where you have 2 comedians on each side so 4 players and much more fun.
You can't add "96" and "34" as they were 4 different numbers 9,6,3 and 4. You can use UP TO the individual 6 numbers and can only use each number once either to multiply, divide, add or subtract. That "153" literally took 3 seconds but other mathematical targets can be very difficult or even impossible to do.

A bit of background: Contdown is one of the longest running shows on TV. There is humour but it's very dry, it's mostly about a simple, very succesful quiz format being taken seriously.
In 2012 Channel 4 celebrated it's anniversary by mashing up many of their TV shows. One the the results was this 'one off' show where the cast of 8 out of 10 Cats took over the Countdown set, format, and two of the regular cast (Susie and Rachel).
The result was so popular that instead of just one show, it is still running now, 12 years later.
Susie and Rachel are Geniuses in words and maths respectfully, so when contestants can't solve the numbers round, Rachel will show them how, and Susie usually finds the longest words, without the help of the dictionary - which is only there if the spelling or existance of a word is challenged.
I'd love to see you guys react to more of this show. It gets more and more ridiculous as the years go on.

Just as an added piece of interest, 8 out of 10 cats comes from a TV advert for Whiskas cat food, where the tag line was " 8 out of 10 owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred it." Originally, the line was "8 out of 10 cats preferred it", but when the rules regarding the claims of ads were tightened up they had to add the bit about owners who expressed a preference bit. I used to work for the Independent Television Companies Association, clearing the adverts, so that's how I know!

    Other notes:
Susie and Rachel are part of the original Countdown crew.
Susie is an accomplished lexicographer and plays along with the contestant to fish out the best possible words in the letters round.

The game basically works as such:
There are 2 types of rounds, numbers and letters to start.
In the numbers round you select 2 types of 6 numbers, smaller or bigger and then a randomizer generates a number based on those 6 numbers and you can use DMAS to get it or as close to it as possible.
In the letters round you select 9 vowels or consonant and get points if your team has the longer word. It isnt neccesariky 9 letters always as it is contestant selected and wouldnt usually workout to a nine letter word every time.
The final round is the Conundrum which Jimmy talks about at the start which is a show provided scramble of letters which is known to make up a 9 letter word with certainty. The team to guess it correctly first wins.

Countdown is a 40 year old show and is quite an earnest/serious show. There's a host and 2 contestants who try to get the longest word or get closest to the number generated. The letters and numbers are actually random, so nobody knows if the number is actually possible or what the longest possible word is that can be made. That's where the two ladies, Susie and Rachel, come in. They both studied at Oxford (languages / maths and quantum physics) and are so good that, for instance, Rachel can confidently say whether the numbers are possible within the first second or two. I remember a couple of contestants who were better at that maths than her but this basically never happens. At the end of the show there's the conundrum. This is a 9 letter word that's been scrambled (so there's always an answer using all the letters).
Channel 4 makes Countdown but also the comedy show, 8 out of 10 cats. They thought the contrast of such a serious show with such a silly show, could be funny, and it was. They swapped the 2 contestants with 4 comedians. Each team is Sean Lock with a comedian and Jon Richardson with a comedian. Joe (the fat, hairy guy) is a random addition to the original format who acts like a joker to bring disarray to proceedings in general. He's a bit of a mess on screen, but has his "hot younger brother", Fabio who always comes on in almost nothing, like a stripper. He never speaks but Joe always explains he's dumb as a box of rocks but looks amazing.
So the framework is Countdown but the show allows the host and comedians to generally introduce anarchy to proceedings. Rachel is famous for being hot, as well as crazy clever. Her looks are obviously never brought up in Countdown but Jimmy Carr "sexually harasses" her throughout this show. He also tries his best to embarrass Susie who is normally so serious. Occasionally the contestants will try to embarrass them too, such as Sean Lock's infamous "that's a difficult w*nk" line.
Since anarchy is encouraged, the format of the show evolves a bit over time.

The original host of Countdown was a great fella called Richard Whiteley and once somebody claimed he was known as Twice Nightly Whitely and he quickly responded more like once yearly nearly, and as people are stating this came from a mash-up of highly contrasting TV shows and this one just worked so well they kept it, ones worth taking a look at are Sean Locke's best bits, Katherine Ryan getting the maths wrong and Jimmys most unnecessary joke ever

Sorry Jodi, you can't just put the 9 and 6 together and get 96, there has to be a function between them(add, subtract, multiply or divide).

It's ok Jodi, we can help with the maths... Another way would be 6-4=2... 2/2=1... 1+50=51... 51*3=153.

Suzy in dictionary corner is a lexicographer so when it comes to words she knows her stuff. Suzy is there to verify that word the 'contestants com up with are correct. Suzy also looks for words and in general will give them to the person sitting next to her to say them.
One of the most hilarious clips of 8 out of 10 cats does countdown is 'Catherine Tate on 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown' very short but very funny.. Or if you want a longer clip look at 'Catherine Tate's Funniest Moments on 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown!'

Jody was using the maths one wrong, she got confused. There were no 34 or 93. You can only use the numbers as you see them.

Yeah, if the selection has a 1 and a 2 you can't just squish them together to make 12.

I'm kinda surprised no contestant on the 8o10c version has tried to go the "937?, well there's a 9, a 3 and a 7" route for comic effect, if my memory serves me right, or else the opportunity hasn't come up.
Truth be told, Jody was a bit thick to think it might be an option.

@@Zardagbum Your memory betrays you, a number of comedians has done that joke, Lee Mack is one of them.

The woman in the Dictionary Corner named Suzie Dent is a pro when it comes to the words and the woman who is placing the letters and writing the maths equations is a maths pro and can do equations in her head really fast and studied Maths in Oxford (In the UK we say Maths instead of Math and NO it is NOT plural it is just how we say it)

I would suggest finishing this episode and then in future, doing some episodes in later season, like 10 onwards. It wasn't really in its stride in the early ones.

Dictionary corner is just to tell them what they could have done. They are not competing. Just commentary and a bit if banter / comedy with whomever is the extra sitting with her in dictionary corner. She is an expert wordsmith and book writer all about words and language.

I think you needed to select a later episode when it got into its stride as a show. It is hilarious and this is not really going to show it at its glorious best. What you also need to know is that John is brilliant at the maths part, Rachel is an expert mathematician and Suzy is a linguist who has written many books on the topic of words.

I disagree. I think this provides the perfect introduction to the show's original format, without having to actually watch a 'vanilla' episode. It certainly mutates into something glorious further down the line but, as a jumping in point, it gives context.

You should probably edit around the add breaks which are every 10-12 minutes. You also get a conundrum to work out also.
