They still had the common cold in 2012 in the episode. Didn't Van Statten say that there was no need to release their findings because it was more profitable to sell medicinal products that could combat the cold, rather than just cure it altogether? 😂I thought that was a pretty clever line.
Emperor Reign yeh sometimes I feel like he overlooks really obvious stuff it's really odd
It's funny because it's true to who they are
@Oliver this
@Alvaro Jay no one gives a fuck
@@jackablamo Right? I like his reviews an all but his attention span is questionable
Remember when doctor who episodes could be set in america without everyone going "HOLY SHITZ IZ AMERICA GUYZ"
I think this story just shows how a single monster is so much scarier than a group. Reminds me of Alien.
Highlights why I felt Aliens was such a remarkably lacklustre film.
Alien: the perfect organism.
Aliens: the imperfect organisms.
Reminds me of you, Kim Fatty IIII.
TooTsaka nah Aliens was an awesome pulp 80s action film. Wickedly fun, endlessly quotable and full of great character moments. I like the first film more for its originality, but the sequel was a very admirable attempt to recapture the magic. Even Alien 3 has its moments but everything that comes after is kinda crap.
Aliens is better than alien. Fite me.
But then everything after that is 🐙
one of the best ever episodes of Dr Who
They should of called the Episode "Metaltron"
Then it would have been a bigger surprise when we see the dalek revealed.
Crash Titan Exactly!
Or alien museum
Alternative titles for "Dalek":
-"Metaltron"
-"The Lone Survivor"
-"Beneath Utah"
-"Survivors"
A Skeleton I think “Survivors” is the most thematically appropriate.
Anyone noticed the description of the Daleks becomes more and more kid friendly as the series progresses?
This episode: It's the Ultimate in racial cleansing and you let it lose!
Other episodes: It's a squid in a tank.
Paladin Boyd: It was also called 'the great space dustbin' in this episode. Don't be disingenuous.
Thomas McDonald, I'm not being disingenuous I'm just pointing out the nazi origins of the Daleks has been pushed aside in recent episodes.
They have been called dustbins since the first episode back in the 60's
"It was also called 'the great space dustbin' in this episode". Yeah, by a cocky dipshit who was immediately proven wrong. Don't be disingenuous.
I remember the episode where they go small and into one thinking, these things have lost all the bite they had.
Well it's hard to have as much bite when you have little teeth.
This is still one of my favorite episodes of all time. It came out when I was very young and kind of traumatized my impressionable mind. Seeing that dalek eye light up in the darkness still sends shivers down my spine. Really great episode and really great review as always Harry
+Sam Malkie Thanks man!
I feel like this episode is probably the only time in the (revived) series where the Daleks are actually threatening. a single Dalek takes out an entire facility, and is only stopped by its own self-termination. contrast that to every other Dalek special where the Daleks barely kill anyone and entire fleets are wiped out like its nothing.
also some of the best of Eccleston's acting is in this episode, especially at any point where he addresses the Dalek. best episode of Season 1 imo
They seem intimidating right up to when moffat got their hands on them and then of course he ruins them
TheHeroOfMasks what about the series 1 finale
TheHeroOfMasks the daleks get progressively less threatening with every apearence.
TheHeroOfMasks I think after the Reality Bomb they kinda suck. For example Doomsday has 4 Daleks just kill dozens of cybermen with no trouble. But then we get the progenitor and the big colour daleks and it kinda goes down the drain
In doomsday I think the Daleks are pretty threatening as there are thousands of them and y'know they could destroy the entire world. Thay also say they can wipe out the entire Cybermen army with only one Dalek. Now tell me that is not threatening.
I so very much wish The Daleks would return to this, no need for large numbers or reality bombs, just subjugation and strategy. It'd be fantastic if The Daleks could return to becoming a real threat in the series. In short, have them take a few seasons break, they can appear in slight cameo but not as a main villain role, and then return with a redesigned force of some sort that uses their old tactic of biological warfare due to not having large enough numbers for proper ground invasion. Make sure to in the process pile on the character development and lore as to not make it pandering.
I know your comment was two years ago but I just thought I'd tell you that when they got the contact to make NuWho they wrote in it that they had to have Daleks in every season.
I know this comment was 3 years ago but we had no dalek story for the whole of series 10 and 11 and then had a dalek story called resolution with just one dalek being awesome and killing tons of people so you got what you wanted!!
@@z9ey I know this comment was 2 years ago but, while I don’t know the exact details of the contract and maybe you do, I believe that the wording leaned more towards Daleks had to be included in some way. Series 10 had the only Dalek appearance in Episode 1 and the Christmas special of Series 11 was still technically in the same year/series.
@@Chimpywashere The BBC have confirmed that it's a myth anyway so it doesn't rly matter
6:30 "where was I? Oh yes, Chris Eccleston, topless and tortured... mmm!"
Anyone here from the future where the the writing has went to s***
Using a LCD monitor to recharge itself is along the same lines as series 11 but at least little else stretches credibility.
Nah I’m from the past sorry
Yep... I was re watching this episode reminding myself of when the show used to be good
"Chris Eccleston topless and tortured. Mmmmm" *Mr Benn music begins*
“You would make a good dalek”
Funny as Rusty calls him that later down the line...
He says he IS a good dalek. It was intended to be a callback to this.
And Davros...
In defence of the Doctor's line about the Dalek being able to calculate a thousand billion combinations in one second flat and then the Dalek taking longer to break out. It may be able to calculate all those possible combinations in one second, but it still has to go through the process of entering each one on the keypad until it finds the correct one. There's a big difference between working something out in your head and the time it takes to physically perform the operation.
But on the critical side, I'd point out that this is exactly why we have timer lockouts when a code or password is entered incorrectly too many times in a row. If this was a decent lock, it would have failed after the first three incorrect combinations and then refused to accept a new code for at least fifteen minutes. Of course, that wouldn't have been that interesting to watch, so I can let them off a little!
Absolutely love that Van Statten has a painting of himself that imitates an actual work, Tamara de Lempicka's art deco rendition of her husband Tadeusz.
I'd just like to mention that I really enjoy your reviews, and find them very enjoyable. They're very entertaining despite that I disagree with you a fair bit of the time (not here, though, Dalek was excellent)
+Azelma Thenardier Thank you! Please spread the word on social media or support me on Patreon, I'd love to get more fans like yourself.
9:54 After watching "Dark Water/Death In Heaven", I wanted to send Steven Moffat a letter saying exactly that...
"Oh yeah, christopher eccleston topless and touchered, mhhh"
best line ever XD
"touchered" ?
huh?
Another SMASHING review, Harry! Never thought I would see Brian in a Doctor Who review but was glad that he was there. I recommend that you review the episode "42" because Chris Chibnall wrote it and he is going to be the new showrunner in 2018! I look forward to all future reviews from you!
Comment what episode you'd like to see me review next!
+Walrus is in the Matrix I never said it wasn't. ;)
+Harry's Moving Castle but it's a dam sight better than the Moffat era ;)
+Harry's Moving Castle I'd say the next Season 1 episode to look at should probably be Empty Child, as it's the first time in the revived series when they try to be kinda scary (and did pretty well imo).
but if you'd rather not bother with it (especially since it's a two parter), I'd also like to see Boom Town
+Harry's Moving Castle My personal favorite doctor who story has always been the season 1 finale. That'd be a good one for reviewing.
+Harry's Moving Castle I'd say Father's Day and the rest of Series 1 from there (i.e. The Empty Child two-parter, the incredible finale, and perhaps Boom Town if you like.
I love that the exchange in the elevator between Rose and the Dalek isn’t limited to dialogue. The Dalek is twitching like a psychotic lunatic that has been forced to murder all whilst only opening up to a hostage under his control.
What happened to the mentioned FilmExplained channel? It seems to be down.
Probably got taken down due to copyright claims. Like so many good old analysis videos of the past
@Harry's Moving Castle Regarding the POV Shots from teh Dalek, Yes, they were used in teh classic series - But never so effectively as here... It was normally a POV showing the fear of characters as they were Exterminated.
Rarely, if ever, did you have a POV form a Dalek where there was just a conversation... :)
I really like this episode but I’ve always found Rose’s attitude at the end to be odd. Her touch caused the deaths of a base full of people. One Dalek could destroy basically everyone so the Doctor is not wrong at all. Had the Dalek not killed anyone and renounced extermination it would make sense.
Recently rewatched this. God it was good, it somehow made me feel genuinely sorry for a Dalek and got me close to hating the Doctor in a way that enhances his character rather than ruining it. The Dalek also felt threatening in a way they rarely do these days.
I love this series! Can you please do a Did It Suck for some of the Torchwood material?
I absolutely love your videos. They're well-written, well-produced, and well thought out. I've watched all of the Doctor who did it suck videos and I have to say every single time I hear that intro I jump. It's much louder than the rest of your audio it's very jarring and I don't think it matches well with the type of videos that you're putting out. Just a little input from a fellow artist. keep it up. I really enjoy and look forward to watching each video. someday, this pandemical end and I will be working again and I plan on becoming a patreon member to show my support. In the meantime keep them coming.
The channel shown at the end doesn't exists
Robert Shearman is one of my favorite writers for Doctor Who,
he cares for the series. I would have preferred him to Chris Chibnall as head writer.
The Holy Terror
The Maltese Penguin
The Chimes of Midnight
Jubilee
Scherzo
My Own Private Wolfgang
Deadline
As well as two Bernice Summerfield short storys and several Doctor Who magazine comics
The POV shots have been used in: the dalek invasion of earth, the power of the daleks, death to the daleks, and remembrance of the daleks.
One Dalek: The Most terrifying and evil being in all the universe.
An army of Daleks: a bunch of dustbins with lasers.
the clips in the background repeating really show the quality editing.
This is my all time favourite doctor who episode tbh, never fails to have me in tears
Why didn't you review Boom Town?? It is AMAZING. Just amazing. Nothing special either, just done well
@@meris8486 - nah, I just like an episode you apparently don't. Fascinating.
@@nightowl8477
Yeah guess so. I've seen a lot of people slate that episode over the years.
Wow, I absolutely loved this! Dalek is a masterpiece IMO. I always enjoy your reviews; keep up the great work!! :)
I love coming back to this after we got Jodie. Just goes to show how bad the series has become that mediocre episodes warrant an 8 whereas colossal ones warrant an 8.
About the common cold he said that hed keep it under wraps
7:25 haha. Yeah that wasn't lost on me either. Gonna give the Dalek a break, my maths wouldn't be too good either if I'd been tortured for a few years.
I wish the Mechanoids were brought back. They were the most cool monsters from William Hartnell's Era
If you like Rob Shearman then listen to Doctor Who: The Chimes of Midnight, it's only £2.99 on big finish, he does great stories
you forgot the daleks master plan
The Daleks will never be as intimidating as this one is in this episode.
I do enjoy how this sets the stakes of the power of a single Dalek, so that when they show up in a horde later you fully understand that a straight-up fight against these things isn't a fight you can even come close to winning. They get pretty old by season 6 and once they're fully re-established as a galactic presence (mostly off-screen) there's not much interest to be found in them. But here at the start it was great.
You are my new favorite channel. I love your wit and humor.
The dalek could probably heal itself with the touch of a time traveler because(I dunno if it’s true but it seems like something that would happen) if you’re in a time war you’re probably gonna make you’re armour able to absorb any energy so that it can fix itself, and since it’s a time war, the time energy thing was probably the most abundant and powerful
That scene with the doctor and the dalek talking about the time war was just amazing
I honestly really like the scenes with Adam and Rose and think it gives the audience some comic relief from the intensity of the story.
Wow, script writer correctly predicts a choice of two possibilities. Uncanny.
>1000 million calculations in a second
So it's working at 1Tz (Terahertz)
Talking about calculations would be more accurately a teraflop (floating-point operations).
It's weird hearing Simpsons hit and run music in the background but I like it.
Thanks for naming all of the classic Dalek stories XD
What If that cybermans head if Kroton from the 8th doctor comic series?
Hi +Harry's Moving Castle,
Sorry if you have mentioned this before but I haven't been with this channel long and am now watching these 'DID IT SUCK?' reviews alongside my yearly binge-watch of Dr Who Series 1-5 (I don't bother with the other series'). As I am now halfway through Series 1, I have looked ahead and notice that your most recent Who review was 'Love and Monsters'. Can I expect any Series 3 or 4 reviews in the future?
Thanks.
Tom Monty Not likely, Fear Her is the most likely to be a reality butbu I have no plans to do any others. I'm gonna review series 10 when it comes out this year, just to rip into how awful it's gonna be.
***** Well that's a shame. I am really enjoying these reviews because with these (earlier) series' there is more to actually analyse - more substance. However, that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy your Series 8 and 9 reviews where you take a more, lets say, critical approach to them. Which is why, nonetheless, I am looking forward to your Series 10 reviews (more than the actual episodes themeselves - Bill looks so obnoxious).
I'm just saying I would really appreciate more earlier series (pre-series 6) reviews. I appreciate the fact that the time and effort required to make one of the reviews is probably quite substantial.
Thanks anyway.
There's also the thing that the Dalek begins acting 'odd' as time goes after having been touched by Rose, because it literally intergrates DNA from Rose to celullarly regenerate. It literally contaminated itself with humanity and began in just small ways - to feel, to have a sense of self. And to a Dalek that is a sentence worse than death. It stopped being a Pure Dalek. That's why it's all erratic and looking like it's shaking with it's deathray gun shaking around like that. It's disturbed by what is happening to itself and it cannot understand until it's literally pointed out by the Doctor... and then it kills itself.
could you please provide a link to that channel that you recommended at the end?
I prefer this season over the current one. the direction of the recent series has really hit the pits.
Every now and then I come back to this episode. Every time it brings a tear to my eye. In this episode both The Dalek and The Doctor serve as both hero and villain. They are both monster and victim. They are tragic. There is a certain magic and sadness to the idea of The Doctor seeing a piece of his past only for it to leave him alone again.
At 6:30 did you use the Mr Ben music? That and doctor who were my favorite childhood tv shows
The issue is, revealing the enemy even half way (in this case) would be totaly pointless, since THE EPISODE IS CALLED DALEK
The 9th and, incidentally, the War Doctor perfectly outline the Doctor's Military history; one the one hand, he's a War Hero because he ended the war but on the other hand, he's a War Criminal because he butchered both sides.
Great vid man, totally agree, love this episode first one I ever watch ed
+Ace Creeper Thanks man, how's your channel going? This was one of the first episodes I ever watched too funnily enough
***** My channel is going great, just passed 1000 subs recently and released a song, I'm gonna do a shoutout video soon, for channels I think need more subs as they have alot of potential, I will be sure to mention you!
+Ace Creeper Thanks very much dude, is it just the frequency of your uploads?
***** is what the frequency of my uploads? i dont understand sorry?
You upload content more often than I do. Like, you upload more frequently, thus more subscribers I presume?
I just thought, some episodes are set in the near future to them, so how doesn't 10's huge Dalek invasion not get brought up in thise times at all!!
Joe Duffy fell through a crack in time
Can you link FilmExplained's youtube channel please? Searching for him on youtube but cant find him
+Rach H Thanks for helping me out with responding. :)
Yea I can't find it
My either
I think this is probably one of the best episodes of the modern series.
Gotta say, I'm slightly biased towards "Dalek". It's one of the first episodes I watched and it's what introduced me to the Daleks in the first place.
This episode scared me so much when I first watched it (I was 8 or 9) I refused to watch finale of this series when I saw the daleks in it for years
These doctor who one are amazing it’s getting me back into DW as Moffat shat on capaldi’s series. You are amazingly funny as well I hope you get more subs. There is nothing you could to improve.
Thx
It calculates the combinations in 1 second it takes 11 to type them
get goosepumps when the dalek said you would make a good dalek
Love how he has a painting of atlas
This was my favourite episode as a child and probably the best of the reboot
No lie this was my first doctor who episode I ever saw. It was what made me a fan of the show and a fan of the Dalek.
I believe the reason Rose's touch revived the Dalek is because Rose is a time-traveller. This form of technology is shown again when Mickey activates the Genesis Ark in the finale of series 2.
9:05 best thing ever
We could've gotten a very different episode, because the Estate Terry Nation was considering not allowing them on the show. Apparently, Russ T planned an episode called "Future Human" where a child-like murderer from the future was discovered by Van Statton, think, the Toclafane in a real human body.
I remember when I got this episode on my PSP, good times lol
Literally 5 minutes after the video ended my sinuses started acting up…wth 😂
So strange how stuff randomly crops up in your feed. This video was published in 2016 and I'm seeing it for the first time 4 years later.
It's also strange that it's a review about a Dr Who episode from 2005.
I remember seeing this when it aired as a kid, it was great.
This is probably one of the best episodes of the revival, if not all of Doctor Who.
Love the addition of Giorgio by moroder in the background of the review.
Hey Harry, do you know if there have been any New or Classic DH episodes set in Canada, or are the episodes on Earth usually just in the UK and US?
theenglishman can’t think of any episodes set in Canada. The 1996 TV Movie set in San Francisco was filmed in Vancouver though. The Doctor mainly lands in England, but the First Doctor stories weren’t so England focused e.g Marco Polo, The Aztecs, The Reign of Terror, The Romans, The Crusade, The Chase, The Mythmakers, The Daleks’ Masterplan, The Gunfighters, The Tenth Planet. The Second Doctor was more global too, in The Underwater Menace, The Abominible Snowmen, The Enemy of the World,
Still one of my favourite all time episodes if not my favourite
It is difficult to spot but one of the cases in Stanton's museum is a Xenomorph egg.
Hey I wanna see you doing something like the end of time or the day of the Doctor or more eleventh Doctor episodes
This reboot gave Dalek's a chance to have a swan song. If only this was the last Dalek.
4:17 The Doctor looks like he's in a 2000's rap video
Really wish you took some nyquill before some of these 😄 . Theyre all fantastic, just joshin
3:40 the time lords are more powerful than them.
I really disliked Rose hitting on that guy. Mickey really loved her, while she only uses him when she's in da nger
I would argue that it wasn't the "Power of the internet" That revives the darlek more than the electrical current flowing though the it after it plunged into the monitor, it scanned the internet (How thought he monitor IDK) for signs of other Darleks, which no idea what it was hoping to find, all previous encounters with darleks happened long before the Internet was invented and records likely on pen and paper not a computer system.. and if they were.. not on a system connected to a network accessable via the internet! So many holes in the episode sure.. but lets poke the right holes.
Edit: The elevation is not new, edit: I know I'm four years too late for pointing all this out but still.
This is my favourite dalek story. From both Classic and New Who, this is just so good. I'd give it a 9 or 9.5/10, the only negative for me personally is Adam.
adam sucks!
My biggest issue with this one is how everyone keeps standing still and shooting, could no one reposition?
The episode should've been called museum of aliens.
The POV of the daleks was used in the classic era
Hugh Janus was it? I don’t remember
Whenever you build something the most important part is the foundations ... if it's strong then you can keep adding and expanding on top and rise to the sky. 'DALEK' was the foundations for Nu Who ... it was the moment where we all sat back and said WOW, this new era can be something special. It proved the cheesy old enemies could be made to look deadly and epic, and it proved that bringing them back allowed the Doctor to have incredible 'moments' ... Up until this episode the series had been fun and nostalgic but felt a bit 'meh' .... After 'Dalek' everything changed.
I'd give it 9/10 personally ... one of the top 10 episodes of Doctor Who across the entire history of the show.
This is my favourite episode of all time
Hell yes. loving that Mr Benn music.
Why is Henry Van Statten eccentric?
Cuz he’s rich.
Why is he rich?
Cuz he’s powerful.
Why is he powerful?
Cuz he’s got charisma.
Why has he got charisma?
Cuz he’s eccentric.
But no really, the reason he became how he was is prolly explained away with “He’s rich.”
Hey, I wanna nitpick your nitpick at about 7:35 . The speed of opening a combination lock is generally not limited by how fast you can generate every possible input, but by the system which, by design, should require more time than technically necessary to verify an entry. This is why most systems can say it would take longer than the heat death of the universe to guess passwords, because the system itself is designed to be slow. The real nitpick here is that Van Staten's combo lock is shoddy, not that the Dalek isn't as fast as the doctor says it is.
This is one of my favorite episodes but if I could change the name of the episode it would be “The Last”. Something to a least leave people guessing what the title means. Like the last what ? Last journey? Last Doctor? Or something like that.
