    They still had the common cold in 2012 in the episode. Didn't Van Statten say that there was no need to release their findings because it was more profitable to sell medicinal products that could combat the cold, rather than just cure it altogether? 😂I thought that was a pretty clever line.

      TooTsaka nah Aliens was an awesome pulp 80s action film. Wickedly fun, endlessly quotable and full of great character moments. I like the first film more for its originality, but the sequel was a very admirable attempt to recapture the magic. Even Alien 3 has its moments but everything that comes after is kinda crap.

    I feel like this episode is probably the only time in the (revived) series where the Daleks are actually threatening. a single Dalek takes out an entire facility, and is only stopped by its own self-termination. contrast that to every other Dalek special where the Daleks barely kill anyone and entire fleets are wiped out like its nothing.
    also some of the best of Eccleston's acting is in this episode, especially at any point where he addresses the Dalek. best episode of Season 1 imo

      @paultheelf9154 5 лет назад +7

      In doomsday I think the Daleks are pretty threatening as there are thousands of them and y'know they could destroy the entire world. Thay also say they can wipe out the entire Cybermen army with only one Dalek. Now tell me that is not threatening.

    I so very much wish The Daleks would return to this, no need for large numbers or reality bombs, just subjugation and strategy. It'd be fantastic if The Daleks could return to becoming a real threat in the series. In short, have them take a few seasons break, they can appear in slight cameo but not as a main villain role, and then return with a redesigned force of some sort that uses their old tactic of biological warfare due to not having large enough numbers for proper ground invasion. Make sure to in the process pile on the character development and lore as to not make it pandering.

    In defence of the Doctor's line about the Dalek being able to calculate a thousand billion combinations in one second flat and then the Dalek taking longer to break out. It may be able to calculate all those possible combinations in one second, but it still has to go through the process of entering each one on the keypad until it finds the correct one. There's a big difference between working something out in your head and the time it takes to physically perform the operation.
    But on the critical side, I'd point out that this is exactly why we have timer lockouts when a code or password is entered incorrectly too many times in a row. If this was a decent lock, it would have failed after the first three incorrect combinations and then refused to accept a new code for at least fifteen minutes. Of course, that wouldn't have been that interesting to watch, so I can let them off a little!

    I really like this episode but I’ve always found Rose’s attitude at the end to be odd. Her touch caused the deaths of a base full of people. One Dalek could destroy basically everyone so the Doctor is not wrong at all. Had the Dalek not killed anyone and renounced extermination it would make sense.

    I do enjoy how this sets the stakes of the power of a single Dalek, so that when they show up in a horde later you fully understand that a straight-up fight against these things isn't a fight you can even come close to winning. They get pretty old by season 6 and once they're fully re-established as a galactic presence (mostly off-screen) there's not much interest to be found in them. But here at the start it was great.

    There's also the thing that the Dalek begins acting 'odd' as time goes after having been touched by Rose, because it literally intergrates DNA from Rose to celullarly regenerate. It literally contaminated itself with humanity and began in just small ways - to feel, to have a sense of self. And to a Dalek that is a sentence worse than death. It stopped being a Pure Dalek. That's why it's all erratic and looking like it's shaking with it's deathray gun shaking around like that. It's disturbed by what is happening to itself and it cannot understand until it's literally pointed out by the Doctor... and then it kills itself.

    I believe the reason Rose's touch revived the Dalek is because Rose is a time-traveller. This form of technology is shown again when Mickey activates the Genesis Ark in the finale of series 2.

    We could've gotten a very different episode, because the Estate Terry Nation was considering not allowing them on the show. Apparently, Russ T planned an episode called "Future Human" where a child-like murderer from the future was discovered by Van Statton, think, the Toclafane in a real human body.

    So strange how stuff randomly crops up in your feed. This video was published in 2016 and I'm seeing it for the first time 4 years later.
    It's also strange that it's a review about a Dr Who episode from 2005.
    I remember seeing this when it aired as a kid, it was great.

    Hey Harry, do you know if there have been any New or Classic DH episodes set in Canada, or are the episodes on Earth usually just in the UK and US?

    • @AurumEtAes
      @AurumEtAes 4 года назад

      theenglishman can’t think of any episodes set in Canada. The 1996 TV Movie set in San Francisco was filmed in Vancouver though. The Doctor mainly lands in England, but the First Doctor stories weren’t so England focused e.g Marco Polo, The Aztecs, The Reign of Terror, The Romans, The Crusade, The Chase, The Mythmakers, The Daleks’ Masterplan, The Gunfighters, The Tenth Planet. The Second Doctor was more global too, in The Underwater Menace, The Abominible Snowmen, The Enemy of the World,

    I would argue that it wasn't the "Power of the internet" That revives the darlek more than the electrical current flowing though the it after it plunged into the monitor, it scanned the internet (How thought he monitor IDK) for signs of other Darleks, which no idea what it was hoping to find, all previous encounters with darleks happened long before the Internet was invented and records likely on pen and paper not a computer system.. and if they were.. not on a system connected to a network accessable via the internet! So many holes in the episode sure.. but lets poke the right holes.

    Whenever you build something the most important part is the foundations ... if it's strong then you can keep adding and expanding on top and rise to the sky. 'DALEK' was the foundations for Nu Who ... it was the moment where we all sat back and said WOW, this new era can be something special. It proved the cheesy old enemies could be made to look deadly and epic, and it proved that bringing them back allowed the Doctor to have incredible 'moments' ... Up until this episode the series had been fun and nostalgic but felt a bit 'meh' .... After 'Dalek' everything changed.
    I'd give it 9/10 personally ... one of the top 10 episodes of Doctor Who across the entire history of the show.

    Why is Henry Van Statten eccentric?
    Cuz he’s rich.
    Why is he rich?
    Cuz he’s powerful.
    Why is he powerful?
    Cuz he’s got charisma.
    Why has he got charisma?
    Cuz he’s eccentric.
    But no really, the reason he became how he was is prolly explained away with “He’s rich.”

  • @Orthr

    Hey, I wanna nitpick your nitpick at about 7:35 . The speed of opening a combination lock is generally not limited by how fast you can generate every possible input, but by the system which, by design, should require more time than technically necessary to verify an entry. This is why most systems can say it would take longer than the heat death of the universe to guess passwords, because the system itself is designed to be slow. The real nitpick here is that Van Staten's combo lock is shoddy, not that the Dalek isn't as fast as the doctor says it is.

    This is one of my favorite episodes but if I could change the name of the episode it would be “The Last”. Something to a least leave people guessing what the title means. Like the last what ? Last journey? Last Doctor? Or something like that.
