To answer your question about Lynda leaving her bag behind. The bag is actually what housemates in the first years of Big Brother would wear as it had their microphone battery in it, so once Lynda had left the house she didn't need to wear it anymore ;) I always thought it was really cool the attention to detail this episode put into making the game shows faithful to how they really were, made for great viewing on the day of transmission.

I must politely disagree on Jack. I think he's a wonderful character, his chemistry with Rose and Nine absolutely wonderful. His charmisma and attitude is so blatantly different from the Doctor's that it adds something refreshing to the mix. Plus, while he may have been largely eye candy in Series 1, he does get a great deal of growth and development just in his 5 episodes, and expands even more with his returns in Series 3 and 4.

I thought that Jack functioned as a great contrast to Nine. Jack is flashy, conventionally attractive, promiscuous, and he doesn’t care who knows it. The Doctor has just committed double genocide and is often dour, pragmatic, plainly-dressed (I remember an interview where RTD said Nine’s leather coat came from a charity shop), and chaste.
Their one commonality is a fondness for Rose and her compassion and zest for life. They begin to learn more about the universe through her eyes and see the world more as a massive one, full of opportunities and individuals to meet. I love when Jack meets Ten and suddenly the latter is a more conventionally attractive, well-groomed/styled, and younger man that is now pining after Rose. That episode serves to make Jack less of a character shell.
He has been changed by Rose in that he can’t die and he offers to sacrifice himself in that Utopia episode. I’m not so sure flashy Captain Jack would have done that back in the Blitz. The Doctor keeps on fighting and recovering from the Time War PTSD after Rose helped him do so as Nine.

What i also like about the respective games each of the characters are placed in is that they're each out of their comfort zones:
-The Doctor is in an environment where socialising is key, and that's 9's weakness.
-Rose's strength was never general knowledge, especially not from that time period.
-Jack is vain and must handle a game where his looks are brought into question.
This makes it funny/interesting to see how they over come it. If any of them switched games they'd do better and it wouldnt be as good - The Doctor would crush The Weakest Link for example.

  • @Al_Xe

Yeah, history is full of revivals and reinventions of old stories and ideas - it is not unreasonable to think that future generations might take some aspect of our world today and bring it back with a new twist in the future. One thing I always liked in this episode that I never really saw mentioned anywhere was when the Daleks talked to the Doctor, they coldly referred to Rose as his “associate”, which just felt like a huge contrast with the Dalek from episode 6 who, in a very similar setup, calls he “the woman you love”, or words to that effect. As a new viewer in 2005, with only a base knowledge of the Daleks, that distinction really stood out to me

You know, I always though the series conceived of basically the perfect non-lethal gun with those teleportation beams. They behave so similar to the standard death rays that everyone including the Doctor thought that's what they were, but they actually just zap the target someplace else.
Imagine the Doctor berating a character for blasting some evil alien with a laser only to have that character reveal that: "Actually, they're not dead, I just took them prisoner. Is that enough of a moral high ground for you? Now, if you'll excuse me, I have more bad guys to shoot." Why hasn't anyone thought of this? Like, why isn't this a thing in the setting?

I found it hard to believe that television programs centuries in the future would be remakes of early 21st century shows. That would be like 21st century programs being remakes of what was popular with the masses back in the 16th century. However, I am American and and did get the reference, as, at that time, The Weakest Link was also being made in the U.S. with Anne Robinson as host. To be honest the parts with the reality Tv stuff I never got when I was younger. I first watched these when I was 10 back in 2017. The jokes the names of the droids. I had never heard of the weakest link so I didn’t get the Anne-droid joke. Also the robots name in the fashion show (I cant remember the actual name can someone please tell me) are the same as the actual presenter of the actual show. So these episodes are definitely outdated

I think what bothered me most about this episode was how the great "reveal" of the Daleks in this episode was kind of wasted, since it gave away they were going to appear in the trailer the week before. It's the same with Army of Ghosts and Doomsday. It goes all out to keep the monster hidden, for the most part, until the episode's climax, but the effort is all for nought if the trailer from last week's episode gives it away. That and how the intro sort of gives away that it's on Satellite 5, making the reveal that it's Satellite 5 100 years on later in the episode another wasted effort.

Another great vid! Editing is very snappy. Kai was a bit pointless to the review tho! Its a shame you dont like Jack because i found him very charismatic and witty in this!

All my characters are ultimately pointless dude. ;) I don't mind Jack, his section is just quite irritating and he doesn't have anything negative about his character. He's great in the empty child story because he has faults but in the last 3 episodes of the series he's just too 'perfect' for me to be able to empathise with him

+Harry's Moving Castle true but they usually add something to it! Yeh, see youre point about Jack but i just find him charismatic like this, however the change feels like theres stuff missing between the empty child/doctor dances and boom town. He is better whens hes flawed though (Children of Earth is the biggest example).

Is it bad that the first half hour of this episode does the commentary on media and reality television as good as 3 entire hunger games books (and said commentary is the best part of those books)?
